ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Re: Marceline | Adventure Time | Reserved

[personal profile] savedtheworld 2012-05-01 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Marceline's one of the coolest people one is likely to meet, a "radical game who likes to play games". She is a very casual, fun-loving and adventurous person. She is a fan of adventures that are both spontaneous and dangerous, but she is also content to sit around her house lazily on some days. Marceline has become very worldly from her travels and is familiar with most of the land of Ooo. She is also chill enough to hold conversations with anyone, but she is usually frank rather than polite. She also loves to troll and/or scare others, especially those heroic types who are particularly naive or frightened easily (namely Finn and Jake). Over the thousand years that she has been a vampire, she has shed virtually all attached angst (except for some that she keeps bottled up) and instead embraces the cool side of being an undead creature. Being a vampire also apparently gives her a unique and disturbing view of the world which does give her some internal angst. She does not put too much work into her personal hygiene and gladly indulges in gross acts such as picking her nose. She also has a fairly immature sense of humor and a love of creepy behaviors, such as hiding in and above people's houses, and doing whatever she can to scare them. She also loves getting into fights, often in a playful manner. Marceline is also fine with pain to an extent, because of the way it reminds her of her mother taking care of her. Marceline is also known for her inconsistent fashion. She switches her hair style seemingly every other week (but most consistently keeps it long and never dyes it), and she has a wide variety of outfits that she switches between.

Most of her traits present themselves in an innocent and friendly manner, but Marceline has also shown hints of edginess and has a looser moral code including a belief that some criminals should be executed instead of imprisoned. As she was a child during the Great Mushroom Wars, she seemed to have lost her mother somewhere along the way as well as most likely other loved ones over the years. She tries not to dwell on her past and does not seem to remember some parts, either due to trauma or a side effect of her long lifespan. Her most important keepsake was her stuffed animal, Hambo, as it was most likely the only remainder from her childhood, at least until it was sold by her (ex) boyfriend Ash. Marceline still does have another prized possession, an axe-bass that she converted from the family axe. She has a strong love for music and often vents her emotions (or in some cases random observations) into her music. This is the main way in which Marceline expresses her feelings, and her songs take on a variety of styles. Her friendliness towards others usually varies as to how genuine it is, and Marceline has been known to hide herself behind her snarkiness and trickster behavior as a type of defense mechanism. She is reluctant to form emotional bonds with others due to the times she has been betrayed and abandoned in her past, as well as the simple fact that no one can really relate to a thousand-year old vampire lady. The first person to neglect her was her father during her youth, and she summarizes their relationship through a time when he ate her french fries. One other person who got close to her, a boyfriend named Ash, wound up being emotionally abusive to her and sold Hambo.

Marceline came to rely only on impersonal friendships with a gang of ghosts who similarly hid behind a veil of sarcasm and snark, the type of friendship where genuine emotions are shunned in favor of hating everyone else around them and occasionally bullying them. She has mostly been able to channel her emotions mostly through her songs, and she usually writes music in a variety of styles. However, Marceline's armor has been slowly broken through by her friendship with Finn and Jake, who helped her to make progress in some of the great emotional crises of her life. They helped her to confront her father, and she found out that he really did love her. With Ash, they settled for beating the living Glob out of him after he tried to manipulate her memories. Marceline has rarely been more emotional than when her buttons were pushed by these two. She could be embarrassed, saddened or angered by her father's actions, and Ash's behavior towards her was enough to push her into a fury. The one other person to produce a strong emotional reaction from Marceline was Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum.

The Vampire Queen and the princess had their own history and falling-out, which involved Marceline criticizing Princess Bubblegum's lenient politics and Bubblegum critiquing Marceline's character. Marceline did not seem to have trouble keeping her distance or sometimes teasing Bonnibel, but she was actually hurt by Princess Bubblegum's ignoring her more than she liked to admit. It wasn't until one adventure with Finn and Jake that Marceline was able to voice her feelings in a song, including her reluctant desire to reconcile with Bubblegum. Marceline soon found that the princess kept a t-shirt she gave her and treasured it. They all grew closer through the experience, even though Marceline tried to deny that she considered them all to be her friends when Finn teased her about it. Although Marceline has also gotten closer to her father to the point of visiting him at the Nightosphere (pretty much Ooo's Hell), she wound up recently becoming mad at him again after he tricked her into wearing an amulet that made her the new chaotic lord of the Nightosphere. She was eventually restored to normal without any apparent trauma, but she was hurt by the way he had tricked her.

Character

Name: Mina Tepes
Fandom: Dance in the Vampire Bund [manga canon]
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown, she is at least 200 years old as she was shown to be active in the 1800s. Physically she resembles someone in their early teen.
Time Period: After Senin's death.
Wing Color: Red
History:
Several hundred years before the beginning of the series, Mina's mother was killed during a war between the various warring vampire clans. As a result of this conflict, Mina was forced to become queen of the vampires and take on the responsibility of continuing the vampire race by someday conceiving an heir. To make sure of this fact, the heads of the three clans that emerged victorious in the prior war, Ivanovic, Rozenmen, and Lei, required Mina be exposed to a so-called "purity test" to make sure she remained a virgin and her ability to bear a child sometime in the future, as pure blooded vampires such as Mina can only give birth once in their lifetime.

Years of being alone as queen eventually takes it's toll on Mina, who slowly becomes increasingly depressed and begins to think she has nothing to live for. This changes when she meets the son of her servant Beowulf's son, and her future knight, Akira just after the child's birth. Seeing the innocent child grow-up gives Mina some hope for the future. The pair reunite on the day of Mina's purity test some years later, when after the test Akira finds the vampire princess crying in a field of flowers. Thinking that she had been hurt in someway, Akira promises to protect Mina from then on.

We next see princess Mina in the present day, as she works to open her Vampire Bund, a place for vampires to live in peace without fear of persecution. At the same time, Akira's 17th birthday finally arrives, as this was the day his father promised that the young boy would become Mina's servant. With Akira in tow, Mina attempts to expose her bund, and the existence of vampires in general to the outside world. In doing so she exposes herself to a mountain of naysayers, which prompts Mina to hold a press conference to answer such claims. At this event a reporter, who had been turned into a vampire upon coming to the bund, attempts to detonate a bomb hidden within her chest to kill the princess. Akira Mina's adviser Vera manage to find this out in time and destroy the offending vampire while Akira disposes of the bomb in a shaft that leads deep within the bund's core. For his actions Akira is given the title of knight officelly.

With the truth about vampires out in the open, Mina attempts to craft a normal life of-sorts for herself and enrolls at the same high school as Akira.
This leads to problems, as the student council president hates the vampires presence within the school. However, as it stands, Mina had founded the school years before to eventually serve as a place that young vampires and humans could mingle. This leads a rouge group of vampires to kidnap the president without consulting Mina first. Though Mina seems to think the problem has solved itself, she goes about about with other concerns, such as getting the bill passed that would make the Bund an independent state. As the current prime minister was against the bill and refused to change his stance, Mina resorts to dirty tactics and kidnaps the prime minister's grandson and has one of her maids bite him. Using the child as a part of a trade, Mina gets the prime minister to pull his block of the bill in question in exchange for the safe return of his son.

This issues splits Akira and Mina's relationship in two as the young man begins to question if he can trust his princess. This leads Akira to rally his fellow students against the vampires that had invaded the school by walling themselves up in the campus' chapel until the next day when they would call an outdoors assembly to determine who was a vampire or not. During the night, a group of vampires ,led by the recently turned student council president, attack the chapel while Akira was away looking for weapons.

Mina catches wind of this plan and goes personally to end things. After arguing with the vampire in charge, the son of one of her advisers, Mina sparks a fight with him and in the end kills the rouge vampire. After the fight, Mina laments the fact that no one understands her, as seen by those claiming their scheming in her name, and attacks Akira, who had recently returned with weapons in hand. The pair fight in their true forms, Akira being a werewolf and Mina taking her adult form. Eventually, the conflict breaks apart a large portion of the chapel's roof, which would have crushed Mina if Akira had not defended her small frame with his own body. Seeing that Akira truly loved and care for her, Mina embraces him and realizes the truth of their relationship.

After a few weeks of peace, and Mina bonding with Akira's friend Yuki, her life is once more thrown into conflict as a vampire named Hysterica attacks one night. Being the one in charge of the group that had previously attacked the chapel and turned the president into a vampire, Hysterica claims to be working for a much larger group bent on bringing down everything Mina had worked so hard for. Her plan goes as follows: by using a group of vampires as bomb-carriers, she would blow up a series of buildings in order to break any trust Mina had curried with the public of Japan. After much planning, Mina attempts to stop this plot by luring Hysterica into a place where she could not signal her bombs to explode. After a prolonged fight, Mina manages to beat back her enemy until she brings the president into a perilous situation, which stalls Mina greatly. Mina answers this challenge by changing into her winged form and saving the girl which allows her foe a moment to regain her balance. Hysterica, knowing that Mina's adult form was of great interest to her masters, attempts to call those in charge to spread the news. This moment of distraction allows Mina to signal the president, whom she had regained control of by overwriting her master via a injection of her own DNA, to impale Hysterica with a sharp object. After the fight, Mina allows the president to work in her residence as a maid, as the young girl has no where else to go.

Awhile later, Mina is given the news that the heads of the three major vampire clans would soon be at her door for another purity test. However, this simple visit soon turns into much more, as the three clan heads had struck a wager in which each of them would sic an assassin on Akira and the man whose champion was alive at the end of the conflict would finally take Mina as his bride. Akira first finds this out when a shapeshifting vampire, who was acting on behalf of Ivanovic, takes Mina's form and try to pry information regarding the princess' true form. The pair fight back and forth for awhile before an exhausted Akira kills the vampire for imitating Mina's form. The fight then goes back and forth between Akira, a pair of twin vampires, an a man dressed in a sentai-styled set of power armor. During the conflict Akira is aided by a police officer named Seji Hama and the Fangless of the lower Bund, who direct him to the lowest level of the Bund in order to give him more ground to fight on and regain his strength.

Back in her throne room, Mina sees that Akira has a chance of winning the contest and throws her own bet into the mix. In short, she states that if Akira wins the contest, the three clan heads must leave her alone until such time she decides to marry. Meanwhile, back in the recesses of the Bund, Akira finds himself in an strange place painted to look like Mina's home in Romania. A man calling himself AB, who is seemingly the writer Ambrose Bierce, tells Akira that this place was built to be the princess' personal sanctuary. In a bit, the twin assassins catch up with Akira and force him into a fight once more. Realizing how their attacks work, each twin can swap places with the other instantly, Akira finally defeats the pair. The power armor wearing combatant them reveals himself to be Seji Hama, who had helped Akira earlier. However, rather the fight Akira, who was on the verge of death due to an arm injury, Seji surrenders on the basis that Akira had already won as he was fighting for the girl he loved.

When news of this reaches Mina and the others, the three clan heads attempt to attack Mina, who fights back by invoking a weapon that would flood the room with sunlight and kill everyone within. Rather then risking their own death, the clan heads back down and leave for the time being. Afterwords, Mina reunites with her beloved Akira and renew their promise from years ago to always be together.

Following the contest's end, and Mina regaining control over whom she will choose to marry in the future, the integration of the vampires into human society continues as several of the young fangless join Mina and friends in school. With the world in relative safety, Mina returns to matters of running the bund and bonding with Akira, Yuki, and her other friends.

One night, while holding a slumber party at Yuki's apartment, Akira's old partner, Angel, makes an appearance as the newest member of Mina's personal guard, which at first sparks a rather intense fit of jealously in the princess when she learns that Angel and Akira had slept together during a training mission. This fit is quickly quelled when Mina learns that Angel is in fact male and that it is simply Beowulf, the group both Akira and Angel are part of, tradition to partner with another member of the earth clan as part of the ritual bonding rites every werewolf must take part in.

On her way home from the part, Mina begins to feel odd and eventually falls under the sway of something known as the “Sleep of Death”, a coma-like state in which a vampire falls unconscious for a period of time to recover energy. However, this is not a normal state of sleep as it is revealed that a small nanomachine had infected Mina's mind and was recording her thoughts while shutting down the rest of her body. Much fretting is made over the incident, as Mina nearly died, and it is revealed that the machines were made my Mina's own servants earlier and that someone stole and modified them to act in the manner that caused Mina's collapse. When Mina awakens, following images of her beloved Akira back to the world of the living, Yuki had been arrested for having been charged of infecting Mina in the first place. Mina, knowing her friend would never do such a thing, clears Yuki of all charges made against her.

Following the “sleep of death” incident, Mina orders a Bund-wide blood test in order to find if any of her citizens had been infected by the so called “Pied Piper”, as the nano-machines had come to be known. During one of these tests Akira and Angel are attacked by an incredibly strong man wearing a ragged cloak and little else. Following the fight, Mina requests Akira tell her everything he knows of the killer's identity, a subject the young werewolf had been quiet about thus far. As Akira refuses to give out such information, the conversation breaks down, with Mina finally yelling “What do I mean to you?!” at her beloved. Akira responds that she is his queen, which leads Mina to request he give up the information on these grounds. Akira nearly speaks up on the subject, but not before Mina's emotions get the best of her and she storms out of the room in a fit of anger and depression.

Meanwhile, Angel had set out to lure the would-be killer into the open and confirm his identity for himself. Angel is badly hurt in the attack but is able to confirm the stalker's identity and allow Mina to bring him in for questioning. As it turns out, the rouge werewolf was in fact a boy named Sanin that had been on the same training mission as Angel and Akira were two years ago. Angel then gives Mina the whole story of what happened on that mission, Sanin had gotten into a fight with the other boy on the mission, whose name was Graham, which forced Akira to kill Graham and left Sanin missing since. The Bund's doctor then confirms that Sanin's aggression was caused by mixture of one of Graham's fangs being driven directly into his brain in the fight and the fact that someone had injected him with a type of medication that forced the user into a powerful rage.

Shortly afterwords, a “Pied Piper” infected vampire disables the Bund's security system, allowing for Sanin to escape. Unable to do anything else for his poor friend, Akira is forced into a fight with Sanin that ends when Akira forces his old friend into his human form and then kills him out of mercy. Afterwords, Akira and Mina visit Sanin's grave where Mina asks Akira that if she was ever to become in a condition like Sanin's that she'd like her beloved to kill her. Akira, says he would never do such a thing, as he would hate to loose another person close to him. He then goes on to explain that the reason that he never told Mina about the incident with Graham was that he was sure that she would think he was a monster and not the innocent boy she knew from years ago. In the end, both Mina and Akira break down crying and apologize to each other for the things they said.

Re: Mina Tepes | Dance in the vampire bund| Reserved

[personal profile] hungry_like_the_wolf 2012-05-02 03:36 am (UTC)(link)

Personality: Being the Queen of all Vampires, Mina is quite regal in most public regards. As queen she seems to other to be a supremely confident young girl who is always on top of things and will do anything to keep her subjects under control. These facts have made Mina appear as a somewhat a dark figure to those who do not know her personally. This is largely because the public rarely sees Mina's true self and know her only as immensely confident girl who can make speeches and leads press conferences in front of large groups of people without so much much as breaking a sweat. Outwardly, this facet of Mina's being can also make the young princess come across as a bit cold and calculating to an almost sinister degree.

This is best exemplified by Mina's tendency to do what is best for her kingdom and public with little regard to the morals behind any given action. The best example of this can be seen in an incident in which she directed one of her servants to kidnap the grandson of the Prime Minister of Japan and use him as a bargaining tool in getting the Japanese Diet to pass the bill that would allow her kingdom autonomy from the Japanese government. Though she eventually cured the boy before he became a vampire and returned him home safe and sound. Mina carried out such an act without a second thought, revealing the lengths she will go through in order to attain her goals.

As a queen, Mina possess an array of servants and guardians. From her various advisers to the Earth Clan, an elite group of knights consisting entirely of werewolves, Mina's retinue is rather large. However, she treats each group of servants differently, and tends to be rather cold and political with most of them. However, those closest to her, including her lover Akira and adviser Vera, who had served Mina's mother in the past, Mina considers to be her friends and treats them with warmth and kindness. Keeping such a large group of underlings has a dark side as well as some noble vampires that live under Mina’s rule often use their status as justification to do things in the name of the queen. An example of this can be seen when a rouge group of Vampires attack a human school and do so in Mina's name. Mina's reaction to this incident was to find the leader of the attack and kill him, which serves an another example of the more extreme actions Mina is willing to put into play in the name of maintaining control of her kingdom and people.

In private, Mina’s personality is markedly different than that of her public persona. While still a confident and strong girl, Mina relies heavily on those around her to keep afloat. In particular her primary servant and lover interest Akira is probably the most important person in Mina’s life and she would do anything to be with and protect him if the need arose. This is due to the fact that Akira was the first person who connected with Mina as a person rather then as a queen. Mina is fiercely protective to those she holds dear, such as Akira, and will often become jealous if someone she loves greatly shows attention to another person. An example of this jealously can be seen early in the series when Mina snapped at Yuki, Akira's friend and former crush, for showing interest in Akira. This may be due to the fact that, besides her servants and the various aristocratic hangers-on that come with being a queen, Mina has few friends and once remarked that no one around her really understood her true self. These feelings were powerful enough that Mina doubted even Akira's trust and her and only ended after Akira fought Mina over the matter and used his own body as a shield to protect her.

Mina’s fierce devotion to her friends can also be seen in an instance where she went through extraordinary measures to rescue her school’s student body president whom had been turned into a vampire as a result of a group of vampire’s working in her name but without her consent. In trying to right the wrong Mina frees the girl from her cruel master and eventually offers her a position working under herself as a maid as the president had no where else to go. Mina also was eventually able to get over her jealously of Yuki and make friends with her on the basis of their mutual affection for Akira.

It is also worth noting that Mina has something of a complex when it comes to the gap between her physical age, which appears to be around 12-13, and her actual age, which is well over 700. This conflict often leaves her half way between worlds, despite having the obligations of a queen and head of state, she is unable to have a real, adult, relationship with Akira due to her size and body structure. We see this both upon her first meeting with Akira on his 17th birthday, in which she comments that it is unlikely he finds a girl of her appearance attractive, and later when she bemoans the fact that it is unlikely that she will ever be able to have any kind of sexual relations with her love.

Mina’s view of the noble vampires that serve her is actually quite low, she seems to believe most of them are constantly scheming against her, a fact she is correct in assuming, even while they have sworn to protect her. She places most of her trust in regards to her personal protection in a group known as the Earth Clan, which is a ancient blood line of Werewolves who have protected the Tepes family for centuries. While disfavoring the corrupt Vampire nobility, Mina’s main concern lies with the common vampire who is merely trying to make their way in the world. This was her entire reason for building her Kingdom, or Bund, outside of Tokyo. To give them a chance to live without fear of persecution or violence from the outside or even, in the case of the Fangless, a minority group which rejects drinking blood and have their fangs removed, from within the vampire community. She also hopes that one day humans and vampires will be able to set aside their differences and live in peace.

Strengths: Mina is often shown to be a popular ruler who cares deeply for her people and would do anything for their sake. The fact that she created the Vampire Bund in order to pave the way for safe relations between humans and vampires alone shows the breadth of what she will go through in the name of bettering vampire-kind. She also provides free housing, food, and other supplies to anyone living within the bund. That being said, she will also do rather devious things to remove threats that get in the way of her plans. This is best seen in the fact that she kidnapped the grandson of a politician who opposed the Bund's construction and used him as a bargaining tool to get what she wanted.
She also does her best to curb the more negative emotions involved in being a vampire, including drinking synthetic blood and avoiding the excess many vampires indulge in, in the name of providing a good example for her fellow vampires to emulate. She also cares deeply for those who are powerless and down trodden, as seen in her treatment of the fangless, a group of vampires who remove their fangs to live a more human life, for whom she built an entire section of the bund devoted to living space for them.
Power-wise Mina is much the same as any vampire in her world in that she is much stronger and faster then a normal human being and is capable of limited flight. As the Queen of All Vampires, all vampires in her world have an in-borne trait that causes them to carry out direct orders from the Tepes family without question. Because of her own ideals Mina only invokes this power in moments of extreme peril, such as when she ordered Yuzuru, a young vampire in her care, to kill his girlfriend, who was under mind control at the moment, in order to prevent her from causing the Bund's powersupply from going out of control.
Mina is also capable of transforming into an adult version of herself that possess greater physical prowess then her normal, child-like, form. This form is something of a secret to all but her most trusted friends and advisers.

Weaknesses: Mina has had over the course of the manga various issues trusting others. This came about because, for most of her centuries long life, she had been alone save for her various advisers and bodyguards. As a result she began to think that no one around her truly understood her plight as a ruler and woman, a thought that depressed her for quite sometime. Her lack of trust in others began to get slightly better as she met Akira, whom she loves and trusts more then anyone in the world, and began to make other friends. Though even she had issues with Akira as well, as their relationship was sometime fragile early in canon as they both sought to define just what they meant to one another.
When it comes to matters of national importance, Mina is something of a pragmatist. She has no issues sacrificing small numbers of people for the greater good. The above mentioned example concerning Yuzuru illustrates this point well, as does the fact that ordered vast numbers of her own followers who had been infected with a virus that caused them to go mad to be shot and the corpses burned in order to prevent the infection from spreading to the rest of the bund.
Mina also possess many of the weaknesses that go along with being a vampire. For example, she will burst into flames if exposed to direct natural sunlight and any direct damage, such as by a stake or other pointed object, to her heart will causes her to turn to ash as well.
(For the strengths and weaknesses section, feel free to include powers or special abilities if they apply.)

Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)

First Person:
Before my entrance here causes a panic I would like to clarify a few things about my existence. First, and foremost, I am a vampire, the blood sucking creatures of the night some of you may know from mythology. For those not familiar with my kind, we are immortal creatures who drink the blood of human beings in order to survive. However, that does not mean I will be any kind of threat to the human population of this place. Rather, I have actually sworn off consuming the blood of humans directly. Such a base act has long been an obstacle between friendly relations between vampires and humans and to partake in it myself would be nothing more then a grand hypocrisy. I will instead partake in blood in any alternate ways that may present themselves, whether they be consuming the blood of animals or procuring an artificial source of sustenance. Now that this is all out of the way, I hope we all may get along in the near future.

Third Person:
Mina sighed gently as she the sun finally crossed the horizon and marked the end of yet another day in this strange place. Indeed, she had tested whether or not the sun here would turn her pale flesh to ash and, much to her plight, within minutes her body began to smolder, giving the tiny vampire cause to dash back inside before her life met a premature end in fire and flames. It seemed even in another world she could not escape the weaknesses that had held in her kind in check for so very long.
But more then that, it meant that she was bound to move about only in the darkest hours of night when most slept comfortably in their beds. It was a curse to be bound to the night as her kind was, but she would overcome as she always had and held resolute that she could not be the only person bound to the night in one way or another. If they existed, she would find them. She had learned when constructing her bund that those of similar interest eventually found one another or, failing that, eventually became sick of their own isolation and proclaimed to the world at large their desire to seek the company of those who shared their plight. One problem was solved , or at least a plan made to solve it, one last thing still lay heavy on her mind.
As the moon rose through the heavens, Mina's mind settled promptly oh the bitter juice that kept all of her kind alive. Even here she would need blood to survive and not finding it would mean certain death. She would never resort to drinking the blood of those around her, her morals would simply never allow it. Without the artificial blood supply that kept the Bund running, she may have to resort to preying upon animals until another alternative could be found. Such action was rather messy and primal, but it was far superior to breaking the bond with mankind she hard worked so hard to build and maintain for all these years. But that was enough idle thought for one night, Mina silently swore to herself as she dressed to leave her home. Her body ached for the taste of blood, and there was much to be done to sate that urge.

Name: Kotarou Inugami
Fandom: Negima! Magister Negi Magi
Gender: Male
Age: 10
Time Period: Chapter 313, having confronted Quintum.
Wing Color: Black with white tips
History: Wild wiki link appeared.
Personality:

Most of Kotarou's life revolves around fighting and getting stronger for both his own benefit and so he can better protect his friends. There was a time when he wouldn't hesitate to bring his fists in to solve any and all of his problems, though through training and self-realisation he's learnt sometimes it's better to just wait things out than charge in foolishly. He's not fond of receiving training from other people as he insists he is self-trained, though he has trained under the senator of Megalo-Mesembria (there was little choice given the circumstances), Kaede (after losing to Negi and being determined to not fall further behind him) as well as taking part in Evangeline's survival training.

Superhuman feats of strength like performing press-ups with a huge boulder weighing down on his back and deflecting powerful spells and attacks with his fist are nothing to Kotarou. It takes a lot of punishment for Kotarou to finally kick the bucket, having been partially petrified in the past, being crushed into the ground and having a sword impale him right through his body and pin him. He's able to hold his own against Rakan, one of the strongest fighters in all of Mundus Magicus and a member of Ala Rubra, for forty three seconds before only fainting after having multiple swords pierce his body. Most recently, Kotarou has survived having his stomach pierced during a fight with Tertium, after which he goes on to hold off Quintum whilst the rest of his party escapes. From having been in so many battles Kotarou is good at indentifying what his opponents are planning and when he's calm he can strategise and think on his feet pretty well when he needs to. He's experienced enough in battle that he can nonchalantly dodge the most devastating of attacks and even have time to comment on the battle.

It takes very little to anger Kotarou and there are times where he has started arguments over the smallest of things, even over agreeing about something. Thugs and other hot-heads like himself can easily rile him up, even to the point where after travelling back in time during the Mahora Festival he ends up fighting with his past self. It's not uncommon for Kotarou to rise up to even the smallest taunt or challenge aimed at him. If he ever finds himself losing an argument Kotarou will either storm off or respond childishly as a last resort.

When first meeting someone if they are a girl Kotarou will refer to them as neechan and will later fix that to the end of their name, e.g. Natsumi-neechan. Depending on how familiar he is with someone this can give way to a nickname of sorts, such as 'Chizu-né' for Chizuru. The same can go for people his isn't as friendly with, adopting names like 'squirt' and 'Yuetchi' for Yue. Guys either don't receive honorifics or are mockingly referred to as 'chan', such as 'Kage-chan'.

When it comes to women Kotarou can act in a whole number of different ways depending on the situation. As he sees 'being a man' involves standing up for and protecting women he will go out of his way to ensure he doesn't hit a girl, such as when he defeated Sakura Mei during the Mahora Fest using the air pressure from his punch to knock her out of the ring. The one time he has hit a girl was only due to the dire circumstances and because another girl and his friend, Asuna, was in danger. Compared to best friend Negi, Kotarou feels more responsibility when it comes to relationships with girls. He asks Natsumi for a pactio not because it's necessary he gets the added strength but because he wants to make the pactio to better protect her. Despite this Kotarou has his reservations about relationships with other girls and at one point associated loving someone with weakness, though he has gotten over this to some extent seeing as he has formed his own pactio. There are times when Kotarou can be cheeky and a tad perverted in his humour when it comes to girls, such as commenting on the colour of Nodoka's panties and flipping Brigitte's skirt when he shows up to rescue Haruna, Nodoka and Chisame. Finally, because of his age if nothing else, Kotarou has no problem saying out loud that women are unberable, even saying he hates women after finding out everyone in his party dreamt about 'romance stuff' when trapped in Cosmo Entelecheia and letting slip that Natsumi is 'high maintenance'.

Whilst being more respectful towards women for the most part Kotarou has his own thoughts and ideas on how men should act. He constantly asks Negi if he's a real man during training and even comments on what he thinks a man should and should not do. When Natsumi refers to Kagetaro, a man who previously attacked and badly injured Negi, a bad guy, Kotarou comments that only a sap would bring up good and evil in a fight between men. 'The only thing between fighting men is different points of view'.

Sympathising with others isn't something Kotarou does often or very well. He doesn't like seeing his friends pull themselves down and acting all depressed. When first arriving on Mundus Magicus Negi beats himself up over not being strong enough, leading to Kotarou punching Negi in the face and purposely trying to piss him off to show him how he isn't weak and he's capable enough to make things right (as well as helping him deal with the excess magic which is giving Negi a fever). During their plans to rescue Asuna in the Gravekeeper's Palace he bluntly asks Natsumi what good she would be when she offers to stay behind with him and hold off Quintum, despite how upset she is. This also coincides with what he thinks a man should do as well as what someone who made a pactio with her should do, namely to protect her no matter what. Though Kotarou is rough in what he says and does his intentions are truly good.

There was a time where Kotarou thought of himself as a lone wolf who didn't need to rely on anyone to get by, seeing as he originally lived as a mercenary before moving in with Natsumi, Chizuru and Ayaka. Though he likes to think he can care for himself he loves family life and the feeling of knowing that even he has people out there who care for him like a family would, it's one of the things that makes him feel truly happy. If the people he regards as family or close friends are in danger he would gladly put his life on the line to ensure they are kept safe. After hearing Rakan's words about keeping people safe before the ball at the Governor's General, Kotarou considered becoming a magister magi in order to better protect Natsumi and his friends. Eventually he asks Natsumi for a pactio so he can 'better protect his friends and save the world'.

Though he understands what it means to have friends and experience family life, love is a completely foreign concept to Kotarou, at one point even asking if love is something you can eat. Love is not something he thinks about and it takes an awful lot of effort to make him realise love is even being talked about unless it's outright stated. Basically he takes being oblivious up to eleven, rating girls he likes in terms of how strong they are rather than how much he feels about them. Even when Natsumi tells Kotarou she likes him before running off he has difficulty connecting the dots and comes to the conclusion that she said 'I lemon you' rather than 'like'.

Despite his past life as a mercenary, progressing on to being Negi's rival and then becoming a gladiator to earn money to free his enslaved friends in Mundus Magicus, Kotarou is still just a ten year old. He enjoys playing arcade games and taking the time to relax and goof off now and then to visit festivals, hot springs and other locations with his friends. He enjoys his food and seems especially fond of home cooked meals and sandwiches, as well as treats like cotton candy. Though he's knowledgeable when it comes to battles and thinking up strategies Kotarou is not very book-smart and at times needs more complex, real world things explained to him.

Strengths:

A lot of Kotarou's strength comes from him being half human and half dog hanyo. He's able to recover at a much faster rate than most humans and has a heightened sense of smell and hearing as well. He's capable of transforming parts of his body or his whole being into a beastman or a wolf depending on how serious he wants to be and the scales to which he has been pushed. As well as martial arts and brute strength Kotarou is also blindingly fast and agile with his ninja skills being second only to Kaede. He's able to create multiple copies of himself which are unidentifiable from the original, being similar in aura and density. Furthermore he's experienced in using shundo to move around, 'instant movement'. He relies on chi, the 'physical' form of magical energy, for many of his techniques. Kotarou is also experienced in the use of charms (which he keeps in his hair) in combat, being able to use paper charms to cancel out Negi's attacks when they first fought. On top of this Kotarou is also able to walk on water and air by channelling chi and focusing his dog spirits into spinning discs by his ankles.

Kotarou knows a great deal about eastern magic and even has his own forms of heating and cooling spells which he uses to warm up bath water for Asuna when she is going through Evangeline's training. Additionally he knows other basic magic spells like an eavesdropping spells to ensure no one can hear him, Negi and the other Ala Alba members talking. He also knows enough about battle and survival techniques that he offers to teach Negi and Asuna how to use Shundo and Kankaho respectively.

Emotionally, Kotarou's desire to keep everyone safe is what pushes him on. He's not one to cry and get upset if he can help it and he's emotionally driven by his desire to keep his friends safe, save the world and to keep pushing himself harder and further to try and keep up with his best friend and rival Negi Springfield.

Weaknesses:

There is little physically weak about Kotarou. He can become ill and be injured like anyone else though he will recover at a faster rate than a normal human. As mentioned it takes a hell of a lot of damage to bring him down and keep him down.

Kotarou isn't one to over think situations and tends to react on first thoughts rather than giving any proper thought to the situation. Only when the gravity of the situation is hard enough, such as a life and death choice, does he put proper thought and foresight into his actions. He's not very smart when it comes to academics or information he would have to read about to find. At one point Yue 'intellectually browbeat' Kotarou after they started arguing about love and how it makes you stronger with Kotarou becoming increasingly frustrated that he just couldn't smack Yue and win the argument that way because she's a girl. It's easy to tick Kotarou off and his anger can sometimes get the better of his judgement as at one point he rises up to Brigitte's taunts and insults and Chisame needs to point out to him that Brigitte is purposely trying to intimidate him.

Kotarou has always worried about being left behind and not being able to catch up with Negi. In the past he even cried after being unable to meet Negi in the finals of the Mahora Festival tournament. Before his party flees and he starts fighting Quintum, Kotarou wishes he could have trained himself harder in order to be on the same level. He strives to keep up with Negi in his own way, toughening himself up with arena battles to become stronger rather than relying on training to teach him new techniques. His friends are also another weak point, for as much as he cares about and is loyal to them Kotarou tends to throw everything else out the window when it comes to keeping them safe, even his own safety. As mentioned before he ended up hitting Tsukuyomi, a girl, in order to protect Asuna, despite his stance on being against hitting girls. If it means keeping someone he cares about safe he will gladly throw a plan aside and think up a new one if it means making sure everyone gets away with as few injuries as possible.

First Person:

[The journal turns on to show Kotarou grinning and giving a thumbs up to anyone who might be watching.]

Hey, what's up? How many of you out there know about shundo? It's really easy to learn and even the dumbest guy can get it eventually. That idiot Negi got it down so all of you probably could too!

[Kotarou backs up a little from the journal to reveal he's standing in his apartment with enough floor space cleared out for a quick demonstration.]

Shundo lets you move instantly to another location, up to seven metres if you practice! It's all about focusing your chi, or magical energy, or whatever the hell you want to use, into your feet and gripping the ground like this.

[He strides forwards and bounces from one foot to the other for a moment.]

See? And then, focusing your energy, you just--

[And in a flash Kotarou has vanished out of the sight of the journal. He's now standing off screen somewhere, specifically the place he ended up moving the coffee table in the centre of his apartment to. The poor table didn't stand a chance as Kotarou brutally kicks the thing past the journal and out the window on the other side of the apartment.]

Crap! That wasn't meant to happen... Didja see how freakin' cool that looked though?! Man it smashed the glass so hard it left an outline and everythin'! These things can record, right? If Negi ever shows up this is gonna be the first thing I show him!

[...]

Come to think of it, a table flyin' through a window is nothing compared to the stuff we've been through. Plus Natsumi-neechan would probably get mad about this. Hell they'd all get mad at me... What if Chizu-ne shows up?! Uhh, anyone know how to fix a window?

Third Person:

The Battle Dome was pretty cool at first. Being able to program in all sorts of opponents to fight with in whatever environment you wanted? Awesome! Having to go around the safety function to make the whole simulation more realistic? Not so much. Kotarou had been shown enough times by now how to disable those sorts of things in the dome but it still took a hell of a lot of effort and brain power he just didn't have. Nothing could beat a good old fashioned spar between two people, not even some huge dome designed for fighting and practicing!

It's after a short training session fighting some opponent that could do little more than throw him around and barely rough him up that Kotarou takes a seat in the viewing area with some random juice box only Yue would have picked up and flicks open his journal.

"Oi, is there anyone here who wants to throw a few punches at me and get a training session goin'? Don't care where, it can be in the dome if you want, I just want to fight something real. You can't expect a guy who's used to slugging his friend to just sit around and screw up some simulation, yeah?"

There's a pause as his eyes wander around the viewing area and he takes a long sip of his drink through a straw.

"I'd rather spar with a guy y'know... But I don't mind any girls coming over either I guess."

Neechans to the left please, he'd rather not going sparring with a girl so soon after coming here. He could have just left it at 'guys only' but then that might be disrespectful because it's not like women can't fight, he's met plenty who can, but what if someone took offense? Or what a girl has already been offended because of how he phrased things?! See, this is why girls are confusing, there's way too much thinking involved. Whereas guys? Yeah, he'll gladly beat the shit out of any of them. Wear your battle scars with pride and all that.

"I'm just not the sort of guy who wants to hit a girl. Whatever, if anyone's interested I'm here all day."

And when he says all day he really means all day. Spending weeks crammed into Evangeline's resort was better training than this place could ever offer, but there was no Evangeline here, or Negi, or anyone else he was familiar with. Maybe by staying here he'll end up running into some strong opponent who he can fight with, spar with, surpass even. Here he has all the time he needs to get stronger and level up.

When he ends up going back home and all that training goes to waste though? He doesn't care, he'll clear that hurdle when it comes.

Re: Greed | Fullmetal Alchemist

[personal profile] moremoremore 2012-05-02 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Greed is one of the seven homunculi created from the soul of Father. As his name suggests, he is the personification of Father's greed, and all of his desires stem from Father's own. But as Greed says in his own words, this does not necessarily make him good or evil, as everyone wants something. Ever since he was born, Green has had an emptiness inside him that he has struggled to fill with everything he could desire. His primary wants are classified as "money, sex, power, fame and eternal life", and he later topped that with his desire for total world domination. Many of his goals were unrealistic, but Greed liked to maintain that there was no such thing as "no such thing". At the same time, Greed has been in denial of the one desire which actually fulfills him: true friendship. Greed rationalizes his emotional side to preserve his self-image, as always refers to his friends/subordinates as his "possessions", a term that seems to imply emotional detachment but also implies the opposite considering that possessions are the most important thing to someone who wants everything. Greed has technically lived two lives, and in both he wound up rebelling against Father to go his own way. His collection of friends are also part of his rebellion against father, as they are the only parts of him that he gets to choose for himself. This gives him a sense of agency that he lacks while acting as an extension of Father.

There is a marked difference between Greed's behavior as seen in his two lives. In his first life, he lived to be around 200. He had grown weary of listening to Father's orders, and his natural desire led him to want more out of life than being Father's lackey. After running away, he kept a low profile at Dublith, basing himself in the Devil's Nest bar. When he was seen, he was an unusually relaxed figure, especially when compared to the other homicidal homunculi. His contentment in this time could be attributed to the "possessions" he acquired there - a group of chimeras who acted as his gang. He still did keep listening to rumors spreading through the underworld in hopes of finding chances at gaining more power and eternal life. He liked to act smarmy, but he was also self-conscious of his own nature. He could be rude and often frankly described himself and others. Greed still tried to be fair and somewhat understanding towards others even when his plans involved kidnappings. He also kept to his own moral code, in which he never lied and refused to fight women. Greed only became intense and deranged in two types of situations: when he got into describing the things he desires, and when his current "possessions" were endangered.

The one who pushed Greed past his limit and brought him to be killed by Father was King Bradley, better known as Wrath, Greed's youngest brother whom he had not even known about. Greed's Philospher's Stone was later infused into the body of a mortal, Ling Yao, as part of Father's new method of forming homunculi. This Greed was reborn with a blank slate. He retained some traits from the original Greed, such as his desires, and he still was pretty frank with others. However, he was loyal to Father again and had no memories of his past life. This Greed was also more ruthless. While the original Greed was more willing to talk things out with others and did not seem to particularly want to kill others unless they had gone too far, the new Greed had no hesitations when it came to killing even harmless-looking intruders. It seems likely that the original Greed was similar early in his own life. Things changed after Greed killed one intruder, who was actually the last survivor from the original Greed's gang. This started to awaken Greed's old memories, and it was at this point that Ling started to influence Greed's behavior for the better. With this, Greed's second rebellion was sparked, and this time it was rooted in both confusion and a desire for revenge against Bradley, as he remembered the way Bradley had killed the chimeras. He regained the rest of his memories in the process, so the two different Greeds became one.

Despite his initial impulsive attack, Greed had enough sense to retreat and bide his time until he could find a way to get what he wanted. Aside from revenge, he also wanted the power that he now knew Father was trying to obtain, as it could truly make him the ruler of the world. As time went on, Greed and Ling started to become more of a symbiotic duo. Initially, the two had struggled for control of the body, with Ling sometimes taking control during moments of great emotional distress. Greed eventually began letting Ling have the body more, mostly when chances arose to utilize Ling's advantages. Greed still had a strong sense of pride when it came to friendships; he could only accept them when his friends were subservient, so it was like he owned them. He only partnered with Edward Elric after Ed "volunteered" to join his Koopa Troop gang, but Greed's relationship with Ling wound up being the closest to an equal friendship that he had. It escalated beyond simply their sharing of common enemies, to the point were both were stricken by the death of Ling's bodyguard, the old man Fu. And in the final hour, Ling was the able to get Greed to admit that he did want friendship more than anything.

Greed's journey led him to a place that went against his nature, where he accepted some responsibilities and performed more selfless actions. In his last battle with Wrath, he was still motivated by revenge, but he also cited a genuine desire to side with "the underdog", the type of person he would want as a friend. He also honored Buccanneer's last wish by protecting the gate of Central with his Ultimate Shield and cooperating with Ling to do so. And in the end, Father was able to strike him only after Greed had let his guard down to save a soldier, and Greed refused to let Ling die with him. In his last moments, Greed was able to find peace in the friendships he had formed with Ed and Ling.

[personal profile] nikori 2012-05-02 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hakuouki begins in January of 1864, as the protagonist, Chizuru Yukimura, ventures to Kyoto in search for her missing father, Koudo. Her arrival brings her to the wrong place at the wrong time, however, as she gets chased by ronin, whom end up getting attacked by some Shinsengumi members. Or, more specifically, the Shinsengumi’s furies, which are the result of human experiments conducted by the group under command of the shogunate. Soldiers of the Shinsengumi are given a “treatment” or “medicine” known as the Water of Life, turning them into these vampire-like furies. Hijikata, Souji, and Saitou happen to be on their rounds during this event and end up finding Chizuru and the furies. Realizing that she had witnessed their secret, they take her in as prisoner and debate on whether or not they should kill her so that word of the human experiments doesn’t spread. Heisuke makes her situation a little worse as he accidentally lets out a little more information than she should know, but in the end, the Shinsengumi end up keeping her alive anyway due to the fact that they had also been in search of Koudo. Having Chizuru there could prove to be a bit of an asset in finding him, after all.

Months later, Hijikata finally grants Chizuru permission to leave the compound with Souji as he goes out on rounds. While out, he and the Shinsengumi capture a Choshu activist and learn of the group’s plans to meet that night and plot on setting Kyoto into flames. So the Shinsengumi plan on infiltrating the Ikeda Inn that night, where the Choshu would be meeting. There, Heisuke runs into a man named Kyuju Amagiri, and believing him to be a part of the Choshu, he attacks him. The man—who is actually a demon, and as such is much more powerful than Heisuke—easily defeated him, and with his fists, no less, rather than a sword. He split Heisuke’s head-guard in half, creating a severe cut on his forehead that refused to stop bleeding and would eventually scar. Because of this encounter, Heisuke ends up having to stay in the compound and recuperate for some time.

As the next year progresses, Heisuke helps recruit new soldiers in Edo for the Shinsengumi. Among these people is a Kashitaro Itou, Heisuke’s senior, who ultimately becomes the new deputy commander of the Shinsengumi. Aside from Heisuke, who had invited Itou to join in the first place, and Kondou, who had taken a great liking to the man, none of the captains are happy about his joining. Naturally, this causes some tensions. Needing more room to house him and all the new soldiers (especially after Sanan becomes a fury and needs to be hidden), the Shinsengumi move from the Mibu area and to the Nishi Hongwanji temple.

On one particular day in June of 1865 and when Heisuke returns from Edo, he takes Chizuru out on patrol. While out, he expresses some concern over changes occurring in Kyoto, only to be interrupted by Souji meeting up with them and finding a woman being harassed by some ronin, whom they then scare off. Souji points out that the woman—whose name is revealed to be Kaoru Nagumo—looks exactly like Chizuru, just more femine. Little do any of them (but Kaoru) know, she is actually a he, and is Chizuru’s brother. Heisuke doesn’t see the resemblance at all though. Later, when they return to the headquarters, they learn about their job to guard the Shogun. Heisuke, not wanting to do this at all, stays behind with the sick Souji.

A year later (October 1866), the Shinsengumi receives an official request to guard the notice board at Sanjo Ohashi Bridge. Harada’s division sets out to protect the board, and of course, they are attacked while doing so. They capture some of the men, but some get away due to a girl interfering with Harada—a girl bearing a striking resemblance to Chizuru: Kaoru, the same girl who Heisuke, Souji, and Chizuru had encountered on rounds a while back. Though at this point, there are only suspicions that it had been her (or rather, him).

A fury goes into Chizuru’s room one night in April of 1867 and attacks her. Heisuke and the other captains run in the save her, including Sanan, who ends up having a case of bloodlust after they kill the fury. Unfortunately, Itou comes into the scene and finds the corpse on the ground, and then witnesses Sanan’s bloodlust and the captains preparing to attack him. After demanding an explanation, Itou and his soldiers leave the temple and take Saitou and Heisuke along with him to form a group separate from the Shinsengumi: The Guardians of the Imperial Tomb. Or simply the Guard, for short. While Saitou leaves simply to spy on the Guard for the Shinsengumi, Heisuke leaves due to him feeling obligated to follow Itou, and because of his own national imperialist beliefs. The Shinsengumi allow for them all to leave in exchange for Itou keeping quiet about the furies and the Water of Life.

A number of months later, Ryoma Sakamoto, a ronin from the Tosa Domain who had allied himself with the Satsuma and Choshu Domains and orchestrated the Restoration of Imperial Rule, is assassinated, and Harada is framed for the killing. As the Shinsengumi discuss these events, Saitou returns and informs the group of Itou’s plot to assassinate Kondou and expose the Fury Corps of the Shinsengumi to discredit them. In retaliation, the Shinsengumi plans on assassinating Itou, and then using his corpse to lure out the rest of the Guard and kill them as well. Still being a part of the Guard, Heisuke is included, unless he returns to the Shinsengumi as Kondou, Harada, Shinpachi, and the others want.

In the end, they get Heisuke back, but at a great cost. He gets mortally wounded by Amagiri during the battles that took place after the assassination, and is ultimately faced with the choice of either taking the Water of Life or dying. Heisuke then becomes a fury and is declared as dead to the world…

History: Like most Harvest Moon/Rune Factory characters, Ondorus does not have a fully developed life history, as the game focuses on his personality and relationships with other characters and only gives anecdotes from his life that are relevant to his personality during the course of the game. We do know that he is one of the last members of an ancient race of horned, humanoid monsters called the Univir. They have longer lifespans than humans and many other monsters, and have natural magical abilities - trope-wise, sort of a variant on the typical fantasy elf (which also inhabit the Rune Factory world.)

Long before Ondorus or any of the characters in the game were born, univir lived peacefully with humans, elves, and dwarves in the town of Sharance and the surrounding region. At some point, there was an altercation of some sort, and the Univir either left or were banished from Sharance. They withdrew from human society, living in secluded areas with other monsters and whatever members of non-human races wished to join them. What exactly happened to cause the split between humans and univir is unknown, as there are no complete records of the incident and the lingering hatred between the two races has colored whatever stories remain.

Ondorus was born in the Sol Terrano Desert, where a settlement had been established by the univir. By that time, the univir had all but died off, surviving in a few scattered individuals - by the time period in which the game takes place, he and Kuruna are the last univir inhabitants of the desert settlement. Kuruna, who is about 20 years older than him, has been his friend for his entire life. Neither has ever left the desert, though during their childhood they would often sneak out of the settlement to play in the canyons and crevices of Sol Terrano. Ondorus has spent his life helping Kuruna to maintain the settlement and - primarily - reading whatever material he can obtain by trading with non-humans, studying magic, history, mythology, crafting techniques, and anything else that comes into his hands.

His first appearance in the timeline of the game is when the protagonist arrives at the univir settlement. Ondorus welcomes Micah to their home and the two have a brief conversation on humans and how they're not all that bad ("don't tell Kuruna").

Some time after Micah's visit, the settlement is set upon by a vicious skeletal monster. Ondorus lends his magic to the seal that protects the settlement against attack, and it is thanks to Micah that the Skelefang is driven off and little damage was done. Ondorus develops trust and respect for what he believes is a brave young golden wooly, and later requests a favor of him - to take a certain medicine to the largest cactus in the desert and regrow the flower whose removal agitated the Skelefang in the first place.

Personality: Ondorus' first love is for knowledge, and there is nothing he loves more than to learn something new, regardless of the subject. He will read anything, from long books to short musings. He reads guides for crafts he never has and never will work. His love for the written word doesn't stop at informational texts. Ondorus reads fantasy and mythology, and has knowledge of every legendary weapon and long-lived rumor that occurs in fable. If there is no text on a subject, he will research it himself, collecting anecdotes and information from the people he encounters.

He presents the image of a wise, dignified intellectual - moderating his emotions, speaking carefully with a steady expression, showing amusement with only a small smile. He treats strangers with polite - and honest - friendliness, and is obliging and open-minded. He's more expressive and shows enthusiasm most readily around those he knows well.

Lurking beneath the refined, intelligent exterior is...well, still a refined and intelligent person, but also an absolute dork and sentimental sweetheart. Ondorus' face will light up if he is offered a glass of grape juice. He appreciates handcrafted objects not out of a refined sense of aesthetics, but an attachment to the personal meaning of it, enjoying the value of something by the work and love put into it....and how cool it looks. If questioned about his odd fondness for capes, he'll indignantly defend them as "the formal attire of univir". Those in his good graces know that they really aren't that common among univir at all, and that Ondorus wears them to mimic the heroes of his favorite books from childhood.

Ondorus' greatest concern in his life has always been his duty as a univir. Ondorus and Kuruna were raised knowing that their generation of univir would be the last, and they grew up shaped by that knowledge. Contrary to the usual stories, there was no heavy responsibility of ensuring their race's future - the univir had no future, and would inevitably disappear from the world as they had disappeared from Sharance so long ago. With no way of defying that future, Kuruna and Ondorus turned their energies to assisting other species of monsters who lived seperately from humans. While Kuruna became bitter towards the humans she had never met, the less aggressive and more sentimental Ondorus turned to the secret hope that univir could reconcile with humans before they vanished entirely.

His concern and care for his friends is quiet but strong, and he will not outright challenge someone he respects, but he does not hesitate to ensure their safety and well-being from behind the scenes or to run damage control if they are being unreasonable. More than once during RF3 he asks the player character for a favor on Kuruna or Zaid's behalf without their knowledge. His plans are only ever made with careful perception and planning, and for the purpose of helping his friends. He values his close friendships deeply, considering them as strong as family bonds, and if there is one thing Ondorus can be counted on it for is to always be there for the people who need him.

Personality: Presea is a very emotionally muted girl. Some of this has to do with the fact that for 16 years she was emotionally dead as an exsphere was attached without a control metal. This left her completely emotionally dead and locked into a routine where she didn't even notice her father's death or hear about her sister's death (note: her mother died when she was rather young), and she was little more than a robot. After a key crest was built for her exsphere she remained muted partially due to the fact she was so far removed from social norms as woodcutter, but mostly because she had been frozen in time for 16 years and the world had left her behind. She had no family, no friends and in her own village was considered a monster and a freak because of this. She didn't hold any malice against the people of the town, but given how alone she felt, she never really came to fully understand how emotions cause one to interact with society.

The first emotion Presea got back was anger, she asked "Is this irritating feeling in the bottom of my stomach anger?" to the party to explain this. She can be very passionate about anger, when she confronted the man who put the exsphere on her and later did the same to her sister she goes from deadpan to axe crazy in less than 6 seconds. This tends to go on until someone is a bloody mess or dead and she doesn't seem to show remorse for this most of the time. That being said it generally takes something horrible to put her into that level of rage. This really is her main outlet for dealing with her own betrayal and loss as that is the biggest trigger of that level of rage. Also pressing her about her family, specifically her father or sister will first invoke discomfort but will later bring on quite a bit of anger.

Presea also tends to be very logical and good with numbers given as she has been alive without her emotions longer than she was alive with them. She is constantly making odds and is usually very accurate with them. The problem is she doesn't know when NOT to make them and can do this in very rude and cold ways, telling Zelos that his odds of getting every pretty girl are less than a million to one, or bluntly stating the party has a one to one hundred chance of avoiding a monster. This also causes things like belief to come hard to her, she can believe things that someone she trusts believes, but if left to her own she can sometimes succumb to the simple overwhelming issues of the odds at hand.

Presea also has a bit of an obsession with paw pads in animals. First discovering Corinne’s and later Noishes’ and annoying both of them with her like of them, was one of the first whimsical things that came to her.

Rudy Roughnight | Wild ARMs Alter Code: F | Reserved

[personal profile] omgwat 2012-05-04 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[history cont.]

The world of Filgaia, once thriving and filled with green, is one that is slowly dying as time goes by. A long time ago, a great war started up when Filgaia was suddenly invaded by demons from a distant planet. Humans, Elw, and the Guardians all banded together to fight against the demons, and eventually came out as victors as the war came to an end. There was no longer the threat of invasion; however, the war left great deal of damage to the planet in the aftermath.

Over the course of a thousand years, the Guardians' power waned and Filgaia gradually became a wasteland. Many relics from the war, such as ARMs (Ancient Relic Machines) and the Golems, are left scattered as a grim reminder of its past. In particular, during the war, one type of weapon displayed such frightening power that all models were destroyed immediately afterward, with the prototype being sealed away in an underwater facility to be forgotten by history.

Until one day Zepet Roughnight -- a wanderer as well as researcher -- happened across the facility, and discovered an artificial life-form within. The tiny life, with the physical appearance of a small child, displayed an unusual knack for handling ARMs, as well as incredible strength -- both much beyond a normal person's capabilities. But what baffled the researcher most of all was that it could feel physical as well as emotional pain. This realization stunned Zepet, which made him wonder: why would someone create a weapon with the capabilities of feeling emotion? Furthermore, if this weapon could feel pain... then couldn't it also learn compassion?

Zepet decided to take the child under his wing and teach it about the world outside. From then on it was no longer considered a weapon, but as Zepet's adopted grandson, Rudy Roughnight. Zepet taught Rudy many things: handling ARMs and how it relates to the heart; strength as well as what it means to have it; most important of all, kindness as well as the will to help others over oneself.

But as Rudy grew up, he began to realize he wasn't like the other children. As a child, he often had difficulty fitting in with children his age. He was considered an outcast -- his orphaned background as well as unusual strength frightened many and they avoided him as a result. It... well, needless to say it didn't do a whole lot good for him emotionally, as he grew reluctant to truly open up to others out of fear of rejection. Even though Rudy realized he was different, he never understood why, as he grew up unaware of the circumstances behind his origin. As a result Rudy would often look to Zepet during those times, finding comfort in the old man's kindly words. Essentially, it is through those experiences as well as Zepet's lessons that Rudy learned the meaning of hardship. And it is these traits that shaped him from a mere weapon into a human being with a heart, albeit artificial in creation.

The two kept drifting from place to place, until one day tragedy struck. Zepet had suffered wounds during their journey and later passed away. The sudden loss of Zepet deeply shook Rudy, as his grandfather was the only one he could truly open up to. It was then he was once again alone in the world.

Afterwards, Rudy buried Zepet and then continued wandering by himself. During that time, he would often take on odd jobs to make his living, and he soon ended up in Surf Village working as a ranch hand. While it is unknown exactly how long Rudy stayed in Surf, it's apparent most of the villagers took a liking to the young wanderer, despite the fact he was an outsider.

But one day, a child wanders into the abandoned Berry Cave in search of medicinal herbs for his ailing father. As there is a village ban on going into the cave, this concerns the mayor; however, in the end he decides to wait until the matter is discussed this with the village. The mayor, wanting this to be kept secret until then, warns Rudy not to rush in and "play hero"; Rudy ignores the warning and heads off on his own rescue the child, the reasoning being that he's not from the village and isn't bound by their law. That, and he isn't the type to sit by when he knows something is wrong.

After he saves the child and collects the herbs, a huge earthquake shakes through the area -- the effects felt from miles away. They soon reunite with the villagers, but are then suddenly attacked by a powerful monster lurking within the abandoned cave. Rudy defeats it with the help of his ARM... but his wielding of one scares the villagers even more than the monster itself. Originally ARMs were a power that belonged to the demons, and it is this reasoning that leads the villagers to blame Rudy for the entire disaster. For his efforts in saving the child and the village, Rudy is immediately banished from Surf Village. Which... also didn't do a whole lot good for his self-esteem.

Rudy makes his way to the kingdom of Adlehyde and soon ends up working for Emma Hetfield, during which he meets Jack Van Burace and Cecilia Adlehyde. After completing it, all three of them part ways. However, it's only a brief parting, as not too long after the trio are unexpectedly reunited when Adlehyde is suddenly attacked by demons.

With the death of their King and the royal heirloom -- the Teardrop -- surrendered; Adlehyde is left in ruins. Cecilia resolves to set out and recover the Teardrop. Naturally, Rudy and Jack agree to help and the three of them set out on a quest to... well, save Filgaia. And all that good stuff. During this journey, they meet all sorts of different characters of the good, bad, and the highly dubious variety.

Eventually the mother of all demons, aptly named Mother, is revived and is later defeated thanks to the main team's efforts (as well as those of Mother's very own backstabbing subordinates). Despite the loss of their leader, this does not put a stop to Zeikfried and the rest of the Quarter Knights' plans. And so, the trio's journey is not yet over and they continue to search for ways to put a stop to the demons' plans.

Way later on, the trio confront Zeikfried inside the Gate Generator, after which Zeikfried tries to take them down with him by causing a black hole right then and there. Rudy charges in and tries to chuck him into the black hole, but Zeik isn't too amused with Rudy's idea. So in a last ditch effort, he ensnares Rudy's arm with a cable and tries to drag Rudy in with him. As the cable is impossible to cut or shoot off, Rudy is left with little choice but to shoot his own arm off instead.

Rudy losing his arm was a big shock to everyone involved, but even more startling was finding something no one expected: Rudy is not human. It's revealed to the party that Rudy is a Holmcross: an artificial creation that is human in appearance, except is made of living metal not unlike the demons themselves. The Holmcross was meant to be a weapon, one that could perfectly synchronize with ARMs. However, instead of being the perfect weapon, the Holmcross turned out to be a vicious killing machine. It's because of that, the Elw are hesitant to help Jack and Cecilia when they visit the Elw Dimension to search for a way to help Rudy.

After some serious convincing from his sister, the Elw, Vassim, agrees to reconstruct a new arm for Rudy. After gathering the necessary materials, the surgery is a success. However, a week passed and Rudy refused to wake up, unable to truly come to terms with his origin. This sudden realization about himself caused him to retreat inwardly into his memories of Zepet, and along the way ended up attracting a Dream Demon leeching of said memories. Needless to say, that didn't help matters. It took Cecilia and a fight vs. said demon in the center of his unconsciousness to pull him out of it, but it's what allows him to finally accept that part of himself. Too bad he didn't remember exactly what Cecilia did for him, though.

So! All's well, everyone's happy, and there's a world to save. So Rudy heads back to Filgaia with Jack and Cecilia, and soon after finds that Emma wants build them a plane. Awesome, right? Except it needs a couple Gemini Circuits first before it's actually useful and doesn't crash and kill everything dead. Too bad Rudy wakes up in Luceti before that happens...

Cygnus Hyoga | Saint Seiya

[personal profile] lacies 2012-05-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: As an ice saint it is necessary for Hyoga to keep a calm and cool demeanour. He strives for that calmness and emotional distance, to be as cold and unmoveable as the thousand year glaciers. …except under all that Hyoga is an emotional wreck. He has a tender, sentimental heart and honestly ends up more reckless than he should be but in the end that is also his greatest strength even if he tries to stifle it. It’s his love for his friends and his faith in them that drives him to the greatest heights.

Hyoga is someone who lives in the past, the past that is made up of all the loved ones that built him up to who he is now, all the loved ones that died so that he could grow. It’s their memory that encourages him when things seem hopeless (and sometimes Camus’ voice cutting through the barrier of death). That’s not to say that he doesn’t hold his living friends dear, he does and if not for them he probably wouldn’t do much in terms of living. But the guilt of being the one who survives (and the one who kills) often pushes him away from his comrades. At the start of the Hades arc Hyoga is shown in Siberia, lying against the ice, his love for the ones that have passed on as well as the guilt of having been the one that killed them leads him to isolate himself. It’s a kind of self-inflicted punishment (much like how he insists on keeping his right eye bandaged), because Hyoga is honestly someone who loves and needs to be around people.

In between fights when he’s shown with the other bronze saints it’s obvious that he thrives off of their presence. He laughs, he teases, he goes to the zoo, and generally acts like a normal teenager. Only his bronze saint comrades are capable of bringing that out in him because they know and understand that deep down they can never be normal teenagers. With other people Hyoga will most likely start off like he did early on in the series, cold, distant, a caricature of what his Master always taught him to be. In a sense he wouldn’t know how to be with normal people who weren’t involved in the Holy War and saints and gods. When Saori dismissed the five bronze saints Hyoga’s reaction is to head off back to Siberia, in fact all the saints end up isolating themselves in some way because they aren’t made for normal society. Hyoga just makes it more depressing and tries to not-quite-freeze himself to death.

This isn’t to say that Hyoga is a weak character because he isn’t, he’s the kind of person that gets up time and time again from the brink of death and keeps fighting even after being pitted against those dearest to him, keeps going even after being forced by circumstances to kill two of the most important people to him (three if you count Crystal Saint who was kind of retconned into non-existence in the Hades Arc). It’s just that Hyoga hasn’t frozen his heart and feelings, it’s not something that he’s capable of and through all the fighting and world saving he’s never had a chance to come to terms with their deaths. So he lives desperately in their memory and places them on pedestals flanking the shining image of his mother.

Did I mention he has a huge Oedipus complex? Well he does. He’s the only one out of all the saints in the series that is shown to have a concrete memory of either of his biological parents. Given that his mother stayed on a sinking ship while Hyoga was dragged away on one of the lifeboats he will never get over her loss. She is the starting point of his obsession with guilt and the past; the death of Camus and Isaac only build upon it. He wants to be someone that they can be proud of, someone worthy of their sacrifices. At the same time he knows that this clinging to the past is precisely what keeps him from really being all that he can be for them. He has the strength of body and of spirit but the fact that he never lets go of these emotions is no doubt the biggest disappointment. He knows that and even hates himself a little for this weakness but in some aspects he’s still growing and learning even if he’s already broken all the other boundaries placed upon him.

Strengths:
Physical: As a Saint of Athena Hyoga is adept in harnessing the power of his Cosmo, it’s explained as the power of the big bang that sleeps within all matter. The ability to burn and explode at an atomic level, also to grow and expand. Most saints channel their Cosmo to break apart matter at an atomic level but Hyoga is an ice saint which means his specialization is not destruction but slowing and halting molecular motion, freezing matter. At the top of his game this means he can lower temperatures to the theoretic absolute zero.

Cosmo also gives him the ability to generally break the laws of physics. Strength, speed, and endurance are all rendered superhuman. In cases of extreme circumstances Saints are able to fight even if their five senses have been destroyed. Cosmo at its greatest limits grants access to the 7th and 8th sense which basically allows the individual to transcend death. Not that Hyoga is immortal, he is very capable of dying, it just takes a lot to kill him.

As a Saint Hyoga is also granted a Cloth (holy armor worn by Athena’s Saint) and the power/protection of the corresponding constellation. The cloth itself is somewhat sentient and is capable of repairing itself as long as it’s not damaged to the point of “death,” it has also evolved through a combination of the wearer’s will and by being enhanced by the power of other people’s blood (gold saints and then Athena). The Cygnus Cloth in its current state is capable of transforming into a God Cloth (basically going from sacred to outright divine) when Hyoga pushes his Cosmo to its limits. This is unlikely to happen without the world being in danger and a cheering squad of Camus/Isaac/his mother/Seiya/Saori/etc. breaking through time/space/death/etc. to urge him on.

* the cosmo thing kind of straddles physical and mental but I will include additional mental strengths *

Mental:
Hyoga has a good solid mask of indifference and aloofness, this is a good thing because the nature of his abilities require an amount detachment to be effectively used.  He is naturally calm (except when certain triggers are poked), early on in the series he tends to be the one to keep a cool head when Seiya panics with his hotblooded tendencies. He's someone that's capable of rationalising what needs to be done, whether he agrees with the actions emotionally or not.  And even when he experiences violent shocks (such as when Ikki uses an illusion of his mother to attack his mind) he is able to pull himself together and hold it until it's safe to fall apart.

Another possible source of mental strength is that Hyoga is very aware of his own weaknesses.  These don't sound like very good strengths...

Emotional: It's a bit difficult to define Hyoga's strength emotionally, they are as much his strenghts as they are his weaknesses.  He's loyal and dedicated once someone wins him over and that dedication is capable of driving him to great heights.  His greatest strength is that he can overcome his weaknesses while still remaining true to himself, something he proved to his mentor in the fight of the twelve temples.  He's someone that's capable of compassion and kindness though he doesn't let that control all his actions.

Weaknesses:
Physical:
Honestly he doesn't have too many.  Hyoga isn't invulnerable to pain or death he can just withstand a great deal more than the average human.  At the end of the day he is truly still mortal and the amount of abuse his body has taken can't speak well for how he'll age.  Saints have a tendency to die young though so he may never have to find out.

Mental:
His indifference is a mask in the end and once someone gets past that he's quite fragile.  He can be inflexible in spite of his logic and he has trouble discarding that same mask that gives him strength even when it might be better for him.  His great respect for the teachings of his mentor leads him to be very fixed in his idea of what he should be like even after he proved himself to be equally strong in his own way.  At times he can be extremely dependant on others (or the memory of them) for strength and remains unable to simply live as his own person.  His mental strength only serve to hide his weaknesses, he is unable to see his own potential because of his reliance on what he was taught.  He can't (stubbornly refuses to) see himself clearly and views himself instead through what he assumes would be his mentor's judgemental gaze.

Emotional:
Has not gone through emotional puberty.

His very obvious and excessive attachment to his mother (and to a lesser degree Camus and Isaac) is something that can be easily exploited by those with bad intentions.  He has a lot of emotional trauma starting from when he was forced to watch his mother remain on a sinking boat while he was rescued and everytime he has been forced to kill those dearest to him his feelings of guilt and impotence are magnified.  A part of Hyoga doesn't really believe he deserves to be the one alive.  He gets stuck in a state of self-hatred and ends up punishing himself by depriving himself of things he thrives off of.  People, his comrades, laughter, friendship, these are things he treasures dearly but pulls himself away from more and more as the series goes on.

Because of his emotional issues Hyoga has the poential to be very easily manipulated in spite of all his logic and superficial calm.  Press the right buttons and it would be extremely easy to make him dance into his own death.

Jane Foster | Reserved | 2/2

[personal profile] ohmythor 2012-05-05 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Jane Foster is a girl in love ... with her work.

An astrophysicist by trade and extraordinarily ambitious, Jane is probably, first and foremost, an incredible intellectual workhorse. She is married to her study, relentlessly driven by it to discover quite literally one of the greatest secrets of the universe. She is motivated, studious, focused to the point of obsession, and unbelievably, stubbornly determined to see through the projects she starts on. This drive defines her whole life, since her work is her whole life. Having hit a man with a car, she insists her two friends take him to the hospital while she stays behind to study a strange phenomenon. That's dedication.

Not to say that Jane is incapable of thinking of other things. Jane is actually quite a nice person, though she can be very fierce and a little sharp when she needs to be, issuing startled orders and insisting on a certain way things need to be. Still, she tends to be at her fiercest when dealing with her work, to the point of arguing with a shadowy federal agency that is "appropriating" her things, even trying to physically take her things back from them. Not everyone has the balls of steel required to yell in the face of a bunch of shades-wearing men with guns and vans and jackboots. Outside of that, though, the claws are generally sheathed. She can even be outright awkward, stumbling over her words, speaking rapidly, and smiling nervously, especially in situations where she's out of her league or unfamiliar.

Jane is earnest and forthright, honest about what she wants and what she's trying to do with her life. She's not a terrific liar, often too awkward or nervous to pull it off convincingly. That earnestness can translate into outright nerdiness when she's excited about certain astrophysical topics, and sometimes a little rambling. She seems to talk when she's excited, when she's nervous -- talking is the way Jane fills the silences she otherwise doesn't quite know how to deal with.

None of this is to say she's actually a socially nervous person. At least, not all the time. She's perfectly capable of handling herself like an adult. But there is this sense that she is always a little preoccupied by something. Really, truly, Jane's life revolves around her work. It shapes the person she is, the person she'll become, the person she wants to be -- her iron-clad determination to discover one of the greatest secrets of the universe is the reason Jane Foster gets out of bed every day.

As she is a scientist by trade, you'd expect Jane to be the skeptical sort. But while she is practical, she seems actually quite willing to believe the unbelievable. Perhaps it's the nature of her work, treading on the razor-thin edge between science fact and science fiction. But she accepts Thor's explanation of the universe, of the rainbow bridge and the bifrost, before actually seeing the proof for herself. Her logical mind slots what he says of magic into what she knows of science. She's creative, innovative in a way that might well explain why she's the one coming up with the workable theories of time-space bridges instead of people too deeply mired in quantum mechanical proofs. She's actually kind of a dreamer, spending long nights watching stars when she can't sleep. Jane may be fiercely independent, but she's also an idealist - believing quite literally that magic is just science we don't understand yet.

She's also, finally, pretty modest. She lives in a trailer, and though she calls it "temporary" and is a little embarrassed when Thor walks in, she obviously doesn't mind it too much. It's a sacrifice she's making for her work, and as with all things related to her work, she's okay with it if it gets the job she wants done. So she's not a very frivolous person, with no real need for luxuries or finery. This is somewhat evidenced in the way she dresses, which involves an unfortunate amount of flannel and goofy t-shirts.

Strengths: Jane has no real physical strengths to speak of. Not only is she a squishy human, she's a squishy nerdy human. Her strength is in her brains, not her brawn. In a fight she would be totally devastated, so mostly she'd try to stay out of them.

Emotionally, though -- emotionally, Jane's pretty solid. More than solid. You try falling in love with an actual god of thunder, only to lose him completely and be left to wonder what happened to him, or if he even survived. Not only does she not submit to moping or fretfulness, she goes in the complete other direction towards making it better with her own hands, trusting in her own capabilities to reach him and bring him back. There's no hesitance - only action. Jane seems really pretty resilient when it comes to blows that might really upset other people.

Mentally, of course, she's a brilliant astrophysicist, maybe one of the foremost in the world. Though canon doesn't indicate the exact nature of it, there is mention of "the Foster theory," which seems to hint that Jane has put together an actual working theory on the nature of Einstein-Rosen bridges that might perhaps even be testable - a pretty incredible feat. She's whip-smart, and her sharpness is never to be underestimated.

Weaknesses: Squishy, squishy, squishy human. This part has basically been covered.

Emotionally, there are things that can get to Jane. She may not be fazed by Thor's disappearance, but she takes it very, very hard when her research is stolen. Even when her notebook is returned to her, she nearly breaks down in tears at what she seems to perceive as the complete futility of trying to continue, and it's only Thor's reassurance that helps her move on. Again and again, it seems her life is so completely tied to her work that losing it is a huge blow to her, a problem that will come up in Luceti, so cut off from the world and life she's known.

Mentally, while she is smart, well … her smarts are mostly book smarts. Though she's not socially awkward to the point of inability to function, she has her moments of weirdness or oddly specific intensity in the worst moments. ("Hospital. You go, I'll stay.") Her common sense smarts don't seem to be all that high - after all, she drives Thor out to S.H.I.E.L.D's facility despite Erik's explicit warnings not to, and sticks around in the pouring rain with the risk of maybe getting spotted above the all-out panic that ensues below. Jane can be reckless when she pursues something she really wants, making impulsive decisions that aren't the wisest, and can lead her into serious trouble.

First Person: [ There is the sound of a deep, deep breath. ]

Okay. Right. This is okay. It's fine. This is going to be totally fine, I can just--

Alright. [ Obviously to whoever's listening, this time. ] I know I'm probably one of hundreds of people to have said this, but I'm really not supposed to be here. I mean, a journal that's half magic, half iPad? And -- and wings? No, this is just -- this isn't right. I need to be home. I need access to my equipment, my research -- in fact, a stabilized Einstein-Rosen bridge could probably get everyone here home!

[ She's lost track of who she was talking so. And she sighs, heavily, angry and defeated. ]

Instead I end up here. It's so -- quaint. Aside from the weird high rise buildings, those are a little out of place. But the rest of it? It's like I stepped into some old English countryside or something. Bizarre. Does anyone here even have a computer? Or know anything about astrophysics?

I'm going to have to start all over. For real, this time.

Third Person: It was crushing. It physically hurt, a knot of anger and hurt and anxiety lodged behind her ribcage. Losing her life's work once had been enough -- but this is an entirely different ballgame, and she knows it.

Waking up had been enough of a shock -- stripped down to a summer dress, waking up on a bench in what looked like a town square right out of some quaint European village. She'd thought she was dreaming. Then she'd thought she was hallucinating. Then her mind had raced to the realms Thor had explained to her. But no, none of this fit with her understanding of Norse mythology. Even reaching outside that -- other worlds, other planets, of course it was possible, no one knew that better than her, but how, without her conscious knowledge, without--?

Then she'd noticed the wings. And that had produced a shriek of surprise.

After dealing with the handful of concerned locals that had come over to assist her, embarrassed enough that she felt like her ears were probably red, too, Jane had made her way to the clothes shop (no currency - weird) and found something more practical to wear. Then she'd sat back down on the bench on which she'd awoken and read from her strange technomagical little journal for hours. She discovered quite a bit in that time, and the sun was beginning to set by the time she closed it and stretched, massaging the crick in her neck and looking out over the fountain.

… she was stuck here. Truly, irrevocably stuck in this place. It reminded her, hauntingly, of what had happened to Thor -- how he'd vanished and never returned. What would SHIELD think had happened to her? And what -- of course she'd been watching the news, she'd heard all about what had happened in New York, and -- she'd wanted so badly to contact him, realizing too late why she'd been transferred, had hoped against hope she might somehow--

But now she was here. Far out of his reach, potentially.

And really, that wasn't what depressed her the most. Missing Thor was an ache she'd come to live with. Something she'd converted into fuel for her ever-burning fire of research, of learning, of doing. But now she was cut off from that, too. Her life's work. Her everything. Gone. No research. No Earth. No Thor. No Darcy. No Erik. Not even SHIELD, as prickly as she'd found many of their agents. No nothing. She had been stripped of everything.

Dusk was beginning to fall by the time Jane finally rose from her seat. Her steps, as they took her away from the square, were slow, aimless, and she followed the dying light. It was happenstance that a wandering, kind stranger noticed her blank state and asked her where she was headed, and eventually helped her locate an empty apartment to stay in. But Jane wasn't all there the entire time.

It hurt. It truly hurt. To have to begin again...

But she couldn't give up. No matter how bad it hurt, no matter how futile it seemed. Thor had shown her that. And as she found herself abruptly standing in a new apartment, alone, she clutched her journal in a white-knuckled grip and decided that, come morning, she would ask for a computer.

Character

Name: Cecilia Adlehyde
Fandom: Wild Arms 1/Wild Arms Alter Code: F
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Time Period: Before Pandemonium.
Wing Color: Light blue.
History: You know the wikia for Wild Arms sucks when actual wikipedia has a better summary of the game! Cecilia's small entry in the character section of wiki gives some insight to her beginning to the story.

To fill in some blanks though:

In Cecilia's intro, she's seen in the Curan Abbey, where she's called by Schturdark, the Water Guardian, to tell her of the impending crisis to Filgaia. It's not until Adlehyde is attacked by the Demons not long after meeting her near-future traveling partners that she really knows what he means.

Cecilia lost her father to the demon attack on Adlehyde to look for the Teardrop, which is what spurred her on to go on the journey with Jack and Rudy. She went to not be "Cecilia the Princess" as her blurb on wiki said. She even cut her hair to show Jack she was serious to be herself and not just "the princess." The kingdom of Adlehyde is run by her Uncle in her absense.

Cecilia has a fake wedding at sea after they travel to Milama in order to help out Captain Bartholomew, the ship captain responsible for taking them across the Inner Sea. Before they can though, Captain Bart puts his foot in his mouth and says to a rival that Cecilia was marrying him. To put the rumor to rest, they stage a fake wedding, but the ship is attacked by the Metal Demons looking to destroy the humans who are chasing after the Teardrop.

Before they go to the Photosphere and totally destroy Mother, they take a visit to the Giant's Cradle, where the golum Asgard sleeps. Here, Cecilia wakes the golum by telling him her deepest secrets and fears about the world at large, and that she hopes he doesn't wake up. She doesn't want him to have to wake up and fight, but to wake to a peaceful world. It's this that wakes Asgard, and she alone has the power to control him, so to speak. He breaks the barrier that surrounds the Photosphere to allow the trio access.

After finding out that the Metal Demons are still alive and kicking after they defeat Mother and drop the Photosphere beneath the ocean, they open up passage to the Outer Sea, talking with Lucadia about how Zeikfried, now merged with Mother, is planning to attack the Ley Lines of Filgaia, the very essence of the planet itself. The Demons are using a duplicate of the Teardrop, called the Darkness Tear.

A visit to the Fallen Sanctuary gets the group the statues that signify Love, Hope, and Courage, and a boss battle with Boomerang (who is a total badass, btw.) Boomerang tells the group about Alhazad's Demon Lab west of where the Photosphere was originally. It's here that they find the Darkness Tear, who Lady Harken really is, and how much of a creeper Alhazad really is. After leaving the Demon Lab, Zeikfried comes out and shows the party just how awesome the power of the Darkness Tear is by shooting lasers at them. They all wake to find themselves in an interdimensional space, where they fight doppelgangers of themselves. Rudy loses an arm by being totally badass and removing it himself so that Zeikfried can't bring him with him into the abyss of wherever.

After consulting with Emma about what they should do, they travel to talk to Mariel, the Elw girl that they had helped on the course of their journey before traveling to the Photosphere. Mariel brings them to the Elw Dimension where her brother had been outcast. It is her brother Vassim that helps Rudy in recovering and building him a new arm. Before her canon point, Cecilia aided Rudy in fighting his inner demons and a dream eater in a catfight and shattering the Love Statue that they had gotten prior to this. He wakes from his coma, and they leave back for Filgaia in the present, as opposed to the Filgaia of a thousand years ago.

Where Cecilia apparently wakes up in what seems like Past Filgaia I thought we just left here but not.

And that's it for this episode of "Wild Arms Abridged!" If you're so inclined, there's also a Let's Play for Alter Code: F.

Character

Name: Canti
Fandom: FLCL (anime-verse)
Gender: ???? (thought of as male)
Age: unspecified
Time Period: After episode 2
Wing Color: Black, like the wings Haruko gave him
History: Please refer to the Wikipedia article and the wiki page.
Personality: Canti has a human-ish personality, despite his robotic nature. Blue-mode Canti is a quiet guy (especially considering he can't actually talk). In this form, Canti is incapable of battle, and avoids violence. He's easygoing in that he does not respond to being shouted at or hit. Hitting him is a lesson in futility, as he won't really react and you'll probably hurt your hand. He is obedient and seems to enjoy household chores(and isn't very good at much else). At least, he doesn't complain. He tries to help people out, whether he is playing baseball or working as a crossing guard. He'll obediently try do what people ask him to, even if he doesn't fully understand the request. He spends his spare time (what little he has) trying to repair his head, which Haruko broke with her bass guitar when she first met him. His broken head embarrasses him, so he hides it with a cardboard box. He is polite to others, even helping those who have attacked him. He seems to enjoy reading porn, which he gets at the local convenience store, often for Naota's grandfather. He's an all-around decent, shy, quiet guy.

Canti can be foolish, but he's a really good person(robot?). He is always willing to drop everything for someone else. He's very self-sacrificing that way. He runs errands, joins sports teams, and even fights giant space robots and aliens, all for the sake of others. He is actually more willing to serve others than to do anything for himself, and only works on his head repairs when no one else has anything to do. He is his last priority.

Canti also has a red mode, which is primarily used for battle throughout the series. Though he first appeared in red mode, after Haruko smashed his head it can only be achieved through the use of a catalyst(Naota). When red, Canti becomes a manifestation of Atomsk, the ultimate space pirate and master of N.O. power, capable of stealing the galaxies themselves!... who is also a giant bird and the target of Haruko (it's complicated). Red mode Canti is less obedient and more serious, but still very self-sacrificing and easily embarrassed. He becomes stronger and faster, and can transform into a gun(which fires Naota in big boomerang arcs).

Canti never talks. He only ever communicates through body language or printing images or text on his screen/face. He does eat some curry in episode 3, though, so he has some form of mouth in his grille, though this is never explained and he is never shown to need food or have any preference for one kind or another.

Character

Name: Seeley Booth
Fandom: Bones
Gender: Male
Age: 38
Time Period: After 6x14 “The Bikini in the Soup”
Wing Color: Black with red tips
History: Here
Personality:

On the surface, Seeley Booth is that guy. Attractive, athletic and admired in his field, he seems like someone who has always had things the easy way. His cocky, overconfident demeanor does little to dissuade the illusion. His view of the world is one that is very carefully defined. When someone steps outside the roles and lines he expects, he can be derisive to the point of mocking, calling them freaks, insulting their choices, or simply refusing to try and comprehend the reasoning behind it.

Growing up, Booth was popular and skilled. He was an athlete, and used to being liked by his peers. Natural ability and a perfectionist temperament combine to make him a very competitive person. He’s quick to rise to a challenge, and he doesn’t like to be seen as incompetent. His high expectations don’t end with himself, though. When it comes to things he values, such as relationships, parenthood, or serving his country, he can be remarkably close minded towards anyone who disagrees with his views, and harsh in the way he deals with them. As a result, he can seem prudish in relationships, highly traditional, and rather ethnocentric. When it comes to areas where he’s less than confident, such as financial security and intelligence, he is overly dismissive, downplaying the strengths and privileges of others. This is especially visible when he investigates cases with wealthy suspects, or when investigating murders at private or privileged academic institutions.

Because of his abrasive reaction to things outside his comfort zone, it’s easy to assume that he’s really as judgmental as he seems. But Agent Booth can be surprisingly understanding and sensitive when given the opportunity. As resistant as he is to differences, Booth truly cares about people. While this is most pronounced with his family and friends, it does extend to the lives of the people he interacts with on cases as well. When a case has them investigating a transgender pastor, Brennan and the squints expect him to disapprove of the pastor’s choice to restart her life as a woman. Angela also expects a negative reaction when it’s revealed that she used to have a female lover in college. In both cases, Booth is instead very accepting and actually manages to handle interactions with minimal awkwardness and a great deal of compassion.

Part of the reason for Booth’s harsh judgments comes from tightly controlled anger resulting from his childhood. The son of an alcoholic, Booth found himself taking on the role of protector when it came to his younger brother, putting himself between his father and Jared both figuratively and literally. It left him with a fierce need to protect and to help others who couldn’t help themselves. However, it also left him with a deep reservoir of fury that scares him. After what he experienced as a child, he never wants his own son to go through the same. As a result, he keeps tight reigns on his emotions and does his best to be in a position of control at all times. When working as a sniper for the US Government, or as an agent of the FBI, the control is inevitably in the hands of his superiors. Because of this, psychologist Gordon Wyatt notes that he shows his defiance in small ways, like wearing ridiculously patterned socks and ties (rather than the FBI standard uniform), and insisting on his “Cocky” belt buckle.

While his past may have been far from ideal, Booth found ways to cope, including being a very devout member of the Catholic church. His faith is an integral and precious part of himself, and he’s very quick to defend it. Faith in God gives him strength during difficult times, and hope in an afterlife offers him comfort while working in a field where brutal and tragic death is a daily reality. He prays before meals, participates in communion, goes to church most Sundays (though not every Sunday), and goes to confession.

Like his faith in God, Booth is also a devout believer in the American government. He loves his country. More than ignorant pride, he truly values the tenants of the constitution and, as Hodgins mentions in episode 5x12, he would willingly lay down his life to defend the rights promised there.

With both the Catholic Church and America, Booth is well aware that they aren’t perfect, but he holds them to a higher standard. More than just believing they should, he needs them to live up to the expectations he has for them. Dr. Camille Saroyan explains this to Dr. Sweets and Brennan when they are asked to investigate remains that potentially belong to President John Kennedy. When it seems that the government might have lied to cover up how the assassination actually occurred, Booth is devastated. Cam points out that, as a sniper, he has killed more than fifty people under orders from the government. He relies on those calls to have been made for a very good reason. The idea that the government can’t be trusted undermines the work he has done for them. Even believing his actions were justified, he doesn’t take the loss of life lightly, and he keeps a list in his head of all the deaths he believes he is responsible for.

Despite how devastating evidence of misconduct could be, both with the church and with the government, Booth doesn’t shy away from it. Though he protests and fiercely defends both, when Brennan finds evidence in cases that implicates the organizations he holds dear, he still works to give her all the support necessary to find the truth. He’s a dedicated believer, but his faith isn’t blind and it isn’t shaky enough to be destroyed whenever there are doubts. Instead, he helps Brennan with their cases and waits to see what results occur.

It’s his relationships that define him. Booth is, and always will be, a protector. Fiercely loyal, he does everything in his power to make sure that the people he cares about are happy and safe. Above all else, his family comes first. For most of his life, Booth has put his brother Jared’s well-being over his own. He even gives up credit for a career changing case in order to get Jared out of legal trouble. His grandfather, too, is someone to be protected. Hank Booth rescued Seeley and his brother from their father once he realized what was happening so, when Hank begins having trouble taking care of himself, Booth lets him move into his apartment, where he can help. Even when the demands of looking after his grandfather become overwhelming, Booth doesn’t even consider asking him to move out. He feels that this is his chance to repay him for his childhood. It is Hank who decides that it would be better to move back to the nursing home. And, more than anything, Booth cherishes his son, Parker. Parker lives with his mother, Rebecca, which means that Booth doesn’t get to see him anywhere near as much as he would like, but he takes every opportunity he can to be with his boy. He frets over him when small things seem to be troubling him, he does extensive background checks of the partners his ex-girlfriend brings home, and logic and protocol are thrown out the window if they get in the way of keeping his son safe. There is no one Booth loves more in the world, and he would do anything to make sure Parker is happy and safe and loved.

His protective streak doesn’t end with his family, however. Most notable is how fiercely he defends Brennan. He verbally spars or cuts down people who insult her, even if he understand where they’re coming from, reassures her when she worries about other people not seeing who she really is, and supports her when she’s upset. He helps her deal with the difficulties surrounding her family, while also keeping them in check and doing his best to make sure they treat her right. Booth also defends her physically. While he knows that Brennan is perfectly capable of taking care of herself, he does his best to shield her from harm and to rescue her when he can’t keep her out of something entirely. When investigations into gang matters end with a hit being put out on Brennan, Booth skips a funeral in order to hunt the leader down and make it very clear that Brennan will be left alone. When her life is threatened by a mysterious sniper, he insists on staying at her apartment as a body guard or, later, insists on her staying with him so that he can be close and keep her safe.

He treats her assistants (or “squints”) with nearly the same level of care. They are her people and, therefore, his. Despite arguing with them and spending an extraordinarily large amount of his time rolling their eyes at their reports, he genuinely likes and respects the people who work in Brennan’s lab and will go out of his way to help them.

One area that Booth is not good in, however, is relationships. On the surface, he seems like the kind of guy who should have no troubles at all, romantically. Handsome, talented, and considerate, he’s also a hopeless romantic who desperately wants to have a serious, committed relationship with someone he loves. Unfortunately for him, he’s drawn to highly independent, intelligent, competent women....who aren’t looking for that kind of relationship at all. When Rebecca finds out that she’s pregnant with Parker, Booth proposes, genuinely in love with her and hoping to make a family with her. Not ready to be married, she turns him down. After a brush with death makes him realize the true depths of his feelings for his partner, he asks Brennan to be in a real relationship with him, but she panics, turning him down with the explanation that she can’t change enough to give him the kind of commitment he wants. And then, when he goes back to Afghanistan to train US Soldiers, he meets the beautiful and headstrong Hannah Burley, an investigative journalist. It’s only when he proposes, hoping to make their relationship permanent, that it becomes clear that she wants nothing to do with marriage and, actually, has told him so. Like Rebecca and Brennan, she was always clear about her desires, but Booth clung desperately to the hope that she would change her mind. As a result, he’s left broken-hearted and angry, hurting as yet another close relationship falls apart around him. While he hasn’t given up on relationships, at the moment he’s too angry to consider it a current possibility.

Finally, as much as Booth struggles to keep his personal life and his professional life apart, they often bleed through into each other. Concerns for his son, his devout faith, and his loyalties can have drastic impact on the decisions he makes, and when personal and professional interests collide, the personal almost always win out, regardless of the risk to his career.

Strengths:

  • Physical: He is an expert knife thrower (as seen when he and Brennan go undercover as circus performers). He is skilled at hand-to-hand combat, enough that he can single-handedly take out an active unit of government soldiers when they take control of the Jeffersonian lab. He is also an expert marksman. As a former sniper for the US Government, he once held the record for the longest shot (“well over a kilometer”) made in a combat situation. His skill also translates to at least some historical weaponry. When the Jeffersonian staff is reenacting the assassination of JFK, Booth uses the FBI replica of the WWII military rifle to imitate the shots.

  • Mental: While not as intelligent as the scientists at the Jeffersonian, Booth is very good at conjecture and has an excellent understanding of human motivations. While he relies on Dr. Sweets and the scientists to provide the technical knowledge, he’s proven his mental acuity many times, both in the field and during interrogations, being able to connect the dots and find the truth behind witnesses’ stories. Sweets later tells Brennan that he plays down his intelligence in order to let her be the expert in that field, because he knows it’s important to her.

  • Emotional: Booth is a very caring person and, at times, can be surprisingly sensitive and insightful. He’s able to be Brennan’s support while dealing with her father, encouraging her to give him a chance and offering respect for Max, even though it’s his job to arrest him. He gives small gifts to Brennan’s squints. He’s also able to maintain a high level of emotional control. He masks a lot of his worry so that Parker won’t be upset, and he’s able to push aside his own emotions both for cases and for the well-being of his family. Despite how much he likes to show off at times, he can be surprisingly humble, letting sacrifices slide by without drawing attention to them.

Weaknesses:

  • Physical: Booth has a bad back, a problem that flares up several times throughout the series and which can put him out of commision for several days at a time. He also suffered brain damage due to a tumor. While there are almost no lingering signs, after recovering from the surgery, there were lasting effects immediately after, including memory loss and lowering his shooting ability

  • Mental: A disrespect for highly intelligent people (especially in specialized communities, like schools), and a tendency to jump to conclusions. While he can be dissuaded, he is prone to making snap judgments. While he can be quite intelligent (though maybe not in comparison with Brennan), he’s more likely to rely on his authority as an agent or his physical strength than his intellect.

  • Emotional: His temper. Booth has a terrible temper that erupts several times throughout the show, including once when he shot the clown speaker on an ice cream truck (the act of which got his gun suspended and resulted in him having to see Gordon Wyatt), and shooting a Black Metal band’s amplifier after the guitarist spat on his badge. He’s also terrified of clowns.

First Person:

[the voice that comes over the journal is clipped and almost wry, anger visible...but tightly controlled]

Okay. Whatever genius thought that kidnapping a federal agent and playing dressup was a good idea, I’m telling you right now. I’m not laughing. I’ve heard a lot of crazy things coming out of this book...thing...and I’ve had just about enough. No more fairy tales. No more crazy, hallucination-induced, crazy-bin stories. I want the truth. Now. And one more thing:

I want my badge. I want my gun. And, if you tell me how to get these wings off, I might not even shoot you with it.

Third Person:

Booth leaned in the doorway of Brennan’s apartment, his brow knit together with obvious displeasure. His eyes trailed the jagged edge of the demolished wall before lowering to consider the objects stopping its miraculous reconstruction, taking in the tables and neatly arranged lab equipment.

“I don’t like it,” he said finally.

Brennan glanced up from the bottle of scotch she’d been pouring, confused. “What don’t you like?”

“That,” he said, waving a hand at the rest of the room. “This whole lab and living all together. It’s not healthy, Bones.” Not that he could entirely say why it made him so uneasy. Bones had always had bits of her work in her apartment...but back home those had been artifacts. Historical objects. Not lab tables that may, one day, hold dead bodies.

“I have been in perfect health since my arrival, Booth. And even if the space was needed to research hazardous materials, I am more than capable of establishing safety protocols. Sherlock has proved to be a very satisfying lab partner.”

Booth didn’t seem assured. If anything, his scowl deepened. “That’s another thing, Bones,” he said, finally pushing away from the door to pace slightly. It was an agitated prowl. “If you ask me, the guy’s not right in the head. No way is that Sherlock Holmes.” Actually, considering where they’d ended up, it was as likely as anything else he’d encountered. But if there was one thing Sherlock was good at, it was pushing buttons, and it hadn’t taken him long to hit all of Booth’s. Five minutes together had been all it took to kill any wonder the agent might have had about meeting the famous detective, replacing it with defensive irritation, instead.

“I don’t know what that means, but I have been very grateful for his company. I find his rational demeanor to be... quite refreshing, actually. I see no reason why he would pretend to be someone he’s not.”

“Because it’s Sherlock Holmes,” Booth said, his look turning incredulous when Brennan simply gave him a blank look in response. “Best detective of all time? He’s had just about a million versions of mystery novels written about him. This is your genre, Bones. How do you not know who Sherlock Holmes is?!” Throwing his hands up in frustration, he didn’t give her a chance to answer. “You know what? Never mind. I don’t want to know.”

Character

Name: Ennis del Mar
Fandom: Brokeback Mountain
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Time Period: 1963, just after completing his first job on Brokeback Mountain
Wing Color: White with tan/gold accents
History: Wiki article.
Personality: To describe Ennis in one word would be difficult, but I would probably have to go with "lonely". Fitting, seeing as how even his name can be translated as "island of the sea" (inis being Irish for "island" and del mar being Spanish for "of the sea"). This profound loneliness defines a large part of his character and stems from his isolated childhood, though it isn't a subject he's willing to frequently broach. Shortly after meeting Jack Twist Ennis describes to him how his parents were killed in a car accident.

Jack: Are you from ranch people?

Ennis: Yeah, I was.

Jack: Your folks run you off?

Ennis: No, they run themselves off. There was one curve in the road in forty-three miles, and they missed it. The bank took the ranch, and my brother and sister raised me, mostly.

While he becomes romantically involved with three people throughout the course of the film (Jack, his wife Alma, and his girlfriend Cassie), Jack is the only one with whom he is shown to really relax on a consistent basis and the only one with whom he manages to maintain a longterm relationship. He is also more willing to share details about himself with Jack and after a relatively short amount of time. Even so, when it comes to his past or emotions, he's quick to change the subject when able. He prefers to maintain a gruff and quiet exterior that is juxtaposed with Jack's chatty and much more open nature.

Jack: Your brother and sister do right by you?

Ennis: They did the best they could after my folks was gone, considerin' they didn't leave us nothin' but twenty-four dollars in a coffee can. I got me a year of high school before the transmission went on the pickup. My sis left. She married a roughneck, moved to Casper. Me and my brother, we got ourselves some work on a ranch up near Worland until I was nineteen, and then he got married. No more room for me. That's how come I end up here. … What?

Jack: Friend, that's more words than you've spoke in the past two weeks.

Ennis: Hell, that's the most I've spoke in a year.

Later in the movie we are given more insight into Ennis's thought process and possible reasons for his defensiveness. After Jack suggests that they start a ranch and live together Ennis recounts an event from his childhood, before his parents passed away. He tells Jack of two men that used to live together in his hometown, how they were "tough old birds" but how they were laughingstocks in the town and how one was eventually murdered. He describes how his father took him and his brother out to view the corpse, possibly as a lesson.

Jack: You seen this?

Ennis: Yeah, I was… what, nine years old? My daddy, he made sure me and my brother seen it. Hell, for all I know, he done the job. Two guys livin' together? No way.

Unfortunately, most likely as a result of his constantly pent-up emotions and frustrations, Ennis possesses an extremely violent temper. This is most often sparked by others making comments that relate to Jack or witnessing how the relationship affects him, no doubt due to how defensive he is over the affair as a whole. His reactions range from yelling and throwing accusations to actual physical violence, even to the point of grabbing and threatening his wife after she makes a disparaging remark about Jack.

Ennis is not shown to have many hobbies thanks to an erratic and demanding work schedule, preferring to live simply and practically. That said he does seem to enjoy the outdoors and horseback riding.

He is also a heavy drinker and smoker as seen from the beginning of the film to the end; it's unclear when or why he develops these habits. He and Jack often drink together when spending time on the mountain and Ennis is also shown to drink and smoke excessively whenever he is feeling stressed or impatient about something (for instance, when anticipating Jack's arrival for a visit he drinks several bottles of beer and fills an ashtray).

When it comes to dislikes, Ennis complains repeatedly about Jack's harmonica-playing but it is almost always with a smile and joke. In much the same way he likes to comment on Jack's boisterous antics while also finding them amusing.

Ennis: [My dad] thought rodeo cowboys was all fuck-ups.

Jack: The hell they are! Yeehaw!

Ennis: There you go.

Jack: I'm spurrin' his guts out, wavin' to the girls in the stands! He's kicking' to high heaven but he don't dashboard me, no way.

Ennis: (He begins laughing.) I think my dad was right.

Jack Twist ❝Brokeback Mountain❞

[personal profile] hatsoff 2012-05-06 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Jack is, for the most past, a pretty good fellow, nice guy, and LOVES to complain about a lot of different things. Throughout the movie its obvious that Jack is a dreamer and a schemer, always trying to shoot bigger than he can make it. It seems that he shoots beyond the stars, so to speak, because Jack is a thrill seeker. He cares a lot about Ennis and the things he loves, and has a few problems with his dad.

From the beginning of the movie (and pretty well implied throughout it) Jack is a cowboy sort. He has the old southern accent that goes with being Texan, generally using double negatives, cutting of g's. He tends to talk a little faster than most, but that's probably attribute to how excitable he can be at times. He likes to enter rodeos, something he's never been good at, but stubborn, he continues to try. At the start of the movie, it's his second time working as a sheep herder for Aguirre; Jack isn't particularly fond of Aguirre, either.

Jack is friendly and affable. He's the first to make introductions when talking to Ennis for the first time, and even takes the time to make a little joke when Ennis doesn't give his last name right away:
     JACK: Jack Twist.
     ENNIS: Ennis.
JACK: Your folks just stop at Ennis?
     ENNIS: Del Mar.
His friendly and open nature is apparent later on as well. After a failed rodeo, Jack offers to buy a drink for the rodeo-clown that 'saved his ass' in a respect (though, I mean, it was pretty obvious that jack was flirting with the guy.) He takes the time to pick up the hat that falls on the ground by fellow rodeo rider--who later becomes his wife. Woah straight cowboys in my Brokeback Mountain?! --Er....

Jack is really excitable, too--like really really excitable, particularly in his youth. After talking to and getting to know Ennis, Ennis finally caves and tells an impressively long story about his youth. Jack listens, smiles, and remarks that Ennis had just spoken more words than he had since they'd started the job. Moments later Jack jumps up, howling for joy, likely in victory of attaining Ennis's friendship, but also in jest. A little later on, after Ennis successfully shoots an elk for them to eat, Jack bounces for joy at the excellent shot.

His excitability goes the other way too, sometimes bringing about his waves of complaints--Jack's a complainer through and through. when wrangling the sheep back together after they'd gotten mixed up with another flock, Jack is swearing and cursing about them, and dragging the sheep along. He also complains a lot about Aguirre, yammering about how silly it was for the guy to make them out with the sheep at night. Jack even complains straight through Ennis's attempts to comfort him. Once Jack gets going, he's like the energizer bunny.

Being a dreamer and a schemer, Jack always has a plan up his sleeve, and it's always more than he can handle, or more impossible than he thinks. At his canon point, it's obvious that Jack aspires to be a rodeo champ of sorts, and definitely likes to show off his already obtained victories. Later in canon, Jacks dreams seem to shift toward Ennis, constantly trying to coax him into a "life together." Much later in canon, we learn that Jack had talked to his parents, too, about moving up to live with them, take up the ranch, and bring Ennis with him. It had been his dream for years and years and he stuck to it practically until the very end.

One could also determine that Jack is very stubborn as well, which likely is attributed to his continued attempts in the rodeo and on Ennis. Even when the BARTENDER says he out to switch events, Jack sticks to his bronco-riding. Even when Ennis turns down the offer to live together, Jack never gives up the dream, and even holds onto it for at LEAST ten years after concocting it. Heck! At one point in canon, Jack is SERIOUSLY determined to have the TV off during dinner, even though his father-in-law keeps turning it on. Jack doesn't stop at failure, he keeps pressing through, and fights for the things he wants and loves.

Jack is a swearer throughout the entire movie: shit is PROBABLY his favourite word. He swears when he's happy, he swears when he's mad, he swears when he's sad. Jack is also a terrible shooter; twice in canon Jack misses shooting some thing or another, swearing about it. Ennis even takes the time to jab at him about it after successfully shooting that elk I mentioned before.

Jack also sucks at playing the harmonica, but remember that determined personality trait of his? He plays it anyway. Interesting thing about the harmonica is this. Early in canon, Jack claims that a mare couldn't throw him easily--he's just that good of a rider. Later, he explains why his harmonica was so bad: he'd fallen off a mare in the rodeo once before. Ennis quickly calls him out for it, and blames it on luck. Does Jack tell tall tales? Quite likely. After showing of his belt to Ennis at least once, there's no doubt that Jack has a proud streak running through him.

And, of course, important to the entire movie plot, Jack very much loves and cares about Ennis. Many of his future aspirations revolve around Ennis. Jack lives in Texas and travels all the way up to Wyoming to visit Ennis regularly--and he generally speeds to go up there. He's not exactly the most faithful mind, but it's only out of vexation--Jack had been turned down quite a number of times, after all. While Ennis seems to have an aggression streak, lashing out when he's vexed or upset, Jack is fine with taking the heat and comforting Ennis as best he can.

Strengths: Jack might not be a very good buckaroo, but he's got a number of skills that go with being a cowboy. He can toss a lasso around Ennis with ease, he can ride a horse well enough to calm an unruly mare, and he's a semi-decent sheep herder. His generally affable nature makes him a very easy person to get along with.. unless you get on his bad side, as we see with Aguirre. He's extremely open as seen with the Rodeo-clown, his wife to be, and Ennis, all of whom he talks to upon meeting with a pleasant disposition; he's always friendly upon first meeting a person, even when first addressing Ennis's wife, Alma. His determined nature keeps him set on his goals, and almost never lets go of his dreams. Jack is also a bit of a jokester.

Weaknesses: OKAY it's pretty obvious he's not a GREAT cowboy, but right now? He still thinks he's the shit. His own dreaming tends to cloud his mind, so when he sets his mind on a goal, sometimes it gets in the way of actually perceiving reality. While Jack is open, it's relatively easy to displease him about things, even only temporarily: hence the complaining. After getting sick of beans, he asks for soup: when the soup doesn't show up, Jack gets all riled up at Ennis for it. For the most part, though, he bounces back from these. Though later in canon Jack is a father, it's relatively obvious that he isn't dedicated to his family life--he's often running off to meet up with Ennis in Wyoming, and comments once how pale his relationship with Lureen is. There's one scene that Jack is playing with his son, but for the most part, his family life is undermentioned and when it is, things aren't going so swell.

Personality: Anyone looking at Misato would see a cheerful, easygoing woman who has no problem with knocking back a couple of beers for breakfast or chatting someone’s ear off. She is friendly, unafraid of flirting, and presents herself as someone who can be easily approached. Prone to indulging in irresponsibility and possessing a wide childish streak, she is not above shameless teasing and playfulness. She also tends to be extremely messy – her apartment is strewn with empty beer cans and instant noodle packaging, plus car magazines and boxes that still need to be unpacked.

At her job as the Director of Operations with NERV, she leaves her childish attitudes behind. ...Most of the time. Her position demands a level head in tight situations, because a thousand different things can go completely wrong in a mission involving teenager-piloted giant robots fighting against massive super-beings. Who knew. But Misato follows through, keeping her cool and making swift decisions when mere seconds could spell the difference between failure and success. She is more than willing to take a chance when wedged between a rock and a hard place – even if the odds of success are appallingly low, she will try anything it takes to make a mission work. Trying something, no matter how far-fetched, is better than sitting back and hoping for the best. Determined efforts are better than waiting for a miracle, in her own words, and so she takes action when it is necessary. Otherwise, she says she would regret it for the rest of her life, wondering what might have happened if she had given up.

Her determination and perseverance stem largely from her strong sense of duty to her job, which has grounding in her familial bonds. Misato joined NERV, the organization that fights against the Angels, out of a desire for revenge. Her father was killed in Second Impact, after using his last breaths to place Misato in a protective pod to ensure her safety, so she wants to defeat the Angels who initiated the catastrophic explosion. It’s a bit more complicated than a daughter acting out of love for her deceased father...because Misato despised her father for her entire childhood. She hated him for favoring engagement with work over engagement with other humans, always ignoring her and her mother. However, after he sacrifices his life for hers she becomes confused about what she should feel, because she sees his sacrifice as a turning point in their relationship. She feels cheated out of an opportunity to finally grow close to him.

Despite the practical and logical nature of her job, Misato has a difficult time severing herself from her emotions and morals while on duty. The design of the Evangelions necessitates that they be piloted by children who were born in the year after Second Impact and are now 14 years old (because science is really dumb like that), and Misato is very, very aware that she is sending kids -- not soldiers –out in battle. She may be in charge of tactics, but she cannot think of the Eva pilots as her pawns. There is a constant struggle between her sense of duty and her emotional ties because she cannot separate the pilots from their humanity. She feels a strong sense of guilt for using Shinji, Asuka, and Rei (and later Toji and Kaworu) as weapons, which manifests itself in concerted attempts to be kind and friendly to them as a means of apology for involving them in something so demanding and painful.

She is very perceptive, such as when she notices little things here and there that are very ‘off’ throughout the series. She is aware that NERV is hiding important secrets and she wants to get to the bottom of it, by any means necessary. Her determination drives her to extremes, including sleeping with Kaji in exchange for information. Her perceptiveness extends into the territory of emotions as well. She is particularly perceptive of Shinji’s emotions, in part because she can see a lot of herself in him...which leads to a tendency to project herself and her own feelings onto him regardless of accuracy. When she was his age, she had just been through Second Impact and became emotionally despondent and mute for two years in response to the traumatic incident. She was lonely, and continues to feel a pervasive sense of loneliness into the present, despite all outward appearances of a happy woman. Her light, flighty attitude serves as an emotional defense mechanism – it allows for superficial relationships to form, so as to stave off her loneliness, but it curbs any growth of substantial relationships that could hurt her.

Misato’s emotional state can be related to philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer’s allegory of the hedgehog’s dilemma: hedgehogs require closeness with one another for warmth, but at the same time that closeness opens up the possibility of being pricked by the other hedgehogs’ quills. Humans function in the same way, toiling to find the right balance in order to maximize emotional warmth while eliminating emotional pain, and Misato’s unresolved emotional issues center around this endless struggle. She is afraid of loneliness, but terrified of genuine interpersonal interaction. Commitment, responsibility, and the possibility of failing (and thus getting hurt) repel her from trying to form connections with others on anything that goes beyond the surface. Her craving for human contact cannot be stamped out by her fears, however, so she is heavily dependent on others for emotional support and validation, especially Kaji and Shinji. When she and Kaji date in college, she is attached to him by a very short rope; at one point, she stops going to classes for weeks because she is holed up with him in their apartment. She breaks up with him after she realizes that he was just like her father in the sense that he lets his work absorb in – essentially, she fears her emotions and so she runs away.

The end of the series reveals a darker, more self-hating layer of Misato’s personality, hidden far beneath the surface. These are the parts of herself that she hates the most. As a result of her family problems, she strived as a young girl to be the quintessential “good girl” in an attempt to earn her father’s love and draw him away from his work. As she became older, she began to reject that ideation – it warped into a secret desire to do everything possible to destroy the “good girl” image, which is likely a reaction to wanting to leave the past behind. She says herself that there’s nothing wrong with trying to escape the things that you don’t like – even though she has reprimanded Shinji for doing the same thing. She just wants to convince herself that she’s happy, to ignore everything that’s wrong. At the same time, she seems to run away from happiness as well. She admits that she was happy when she was with Kaji, but hated it because she thought that in finding happiness she was just ignoring the harsh reality that she would just be left behind eventually. Basically, the human psyche can be a terribly messy place.

Character

Name: Syre Atries (first name sounds like “sire”; last name is pronounced pretty much like “A tree is”)
Gender: Female
Age: 35 on Selles; roughly 63 in Earth years
Wing Color: Jade green (#00A86B)
Physical Appearance: Syre is a member of a race called the Ecliptians, who are, for the most part, largely indistinguishable from humans, in terms of general appearances. They all share two traits, however: their hair is very rarely any other color than brown (though the shade of brown will differ between people), while their eyes are almost exclusively jade green (though deeper greens are a common variation).

A majority of them are rather short (ranging from 4'1” [at their absolute shortest] to 5'5” [at their tallest]); Syre, herself, comes in at 5'4”.

Syre sports chestnut-colored, mid-back length hair, which she often keeps in a high ponytail. She has two asymmetrical bangs; one covers most of her left eye, and the other frames the right side of her face.

History, Part 1

[personal profile] worldbuilder 2012-05-06 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
History: [ Since we've all moved here to DW, here's some information on the world I've created, Selles:

A Sellesian year is 440 days, split into 8 months of 55 days apiece. Each month is split into 5 and a half weeks, each of which is 10 days (with the exception of the last/first week of a month, depending). A Sellesian day is 36 Earth hours long.

To sum it up: a Sellesian year is a little less than two Earth years long, so things like birthdays/anniversaries/holidays are more spaced out in Sellesian time.

The planet is home to twelve different nations, each having its own distinct cultures. Syre's home nation, Ecliptia, is very conservative in terms of their beliefs, and the ruling powers prefer to keep immigration and outside trading to a minimum. As such, many Ecliptians are wary of, and sometimes hostile towards, anything that comes from outside the country.

Syre, unfortunately, is one of the hostile ones, though it isn't entirely her fault... ]

Syre was born on the 15th day of the 7th month in the year 1210 AU, in the small border village of Aleisan, to a family of dedicated alchemists, consisting of her mother, Alena, her father, Segmand, and her two brothers, Derrin and Matthas.

As a child, she would watch her parents work, and listen as they discussed ways to apply their research for the greater good; as soon as she learned how to write, she would bring charcoal and parchment along, scribbling down things as they caught her attention. When they were out of the house, she would bring her “notes” to her brothers, who would then explain to her (as best they could) what it was their parents did: as alchemists, they would perform various experiments, and report their findings to the local branch of the Alchemist's Guild, which then sent the gathered information to the Imperial Alchemical Academy, located in the capital city of Kyrae.

Though she didn't quite get the point, Syre was quick to run back to her mother and state that she wanted to 'help with the important stuff'. Alena and Segmand slowly introduced the young Syre to their work, often simplifying things so that she could chime in – as well as a little girl could, in any case. Though she would often miss the point of her parents' more lengthy explanations, it was clear to them that Syre was clearly interested in alchemy; as a result, Alena brought Syre to Kyrae on one of her trips, and enrolled her into the Academy as a present for her 13th birthday.

Being away from home was something strange; Syre was unsure of how to act at first, and she felt horribly alone. In order to keep her mind off of her homesickness, she poured all of her attention into her studies, and quickly made herself known among her peers; students that were sessions ahead of her would ask for tutoring, and she would take it upon herself to ensure that the younger students were properly learning their material.

That didn't mean that she ignored her family, of course; she would send them all letters throughout the year, detailing all of the work she had done and keeping them posted on her grades. Occasionally, they would visit her at the Academy, bringing her favorite books for her to read, or a few sweets to enjoy -- little tastes of home that managed to ease her heartache.

In her second and third years of her academic career, she began to teach the first-year classes alongside her professors, supplementing the material with information she reviewed in her free time. With a somewhat more lenient schedule (due to her “independent work”), she would return home in the breaks between sessions.

Character

Name: Dawn
Fandom: Pokemon
Gender: Female
Age: Unstated, I go with 16.
Time Period: After conquering the Battle Frontier.
Wing Color: Pink, fading to blue at the tips.
History: Bulbapedia is a godsend.
Personality: Despite her behavior as Professor Rowan's assistant if Lucas is the player character, Dawn as the PC is a different character, shaped by different experiences and with different motivations guiding her along.

Dawn is, in many ways, the classic heroine figure; She's clever, determined, kind, friendly and courageous. When she meets someone she's earnest, treating them as a friend whether they think of her as one yet or not. When faced with even the most stubborn Pokemon Dawn is doggedly determined to prove herself to them and to any human that sees her; It's this sincerity that gradually wins her Pokemon over and makes them into a tight-knit team that would tackle anything put before them. There is little in the world she cherishes more than her friends and can put up with a lot from them (just look at what she deals with from Barry, constant fining and runnings into!), and would do almost anything to help them in any way she can. Like one would expect from someone that's so friendly, she's also very compassionate. Cruelty in any form is something Dawn can never abide by, and she treats both people and Pokemon with respect and kindness.

While many people would likely call her naive, that's not strictly true. Over the course of her adventure she's seen a lot of things that aren't exactly butterflies and sunshine, and found out things that wouldn't fail to make anyone a little sad. Rather than be skeptical because of these things, however, Dawn chooses to remain
true to her nature and be optimistic. It's because of this mix of forgiving and bright-siding that she feels people deserve a chance to prove they've changed for the better, no matter what they've done in the past; She was content to let the remnants of Team Galactic pick up the pieces and move on because Saturn said he wanted to remake the team into something better. Still, there's a very childish side of her she's never quite grown out of. She's enthusiastic about anything she decides to do, often to the point where she doesn't think of, or care about, the reasons she shouldn't do it or why she could fail, and only becomes all the more determined to accomplish her goals as time passes; Very little can deter her from a course of action once she's on it or heading for it. Knowing the dangers or obstacles she'll face along the way just makes Dawn more determined to overcome and surpass them all. This isn't always a healthy trait to have, of course; Very few people would ever consider charging into the Distortion World after a shadowy monster through a world-warping rift a safe or sane course of action, but she did anyway. She might not admit it, but she enjoys the adrenaline rush of doing crazy, dangerous things.

It's important to note that Dawn wants to do the right thing in her own eyes, whether it means getting involved in rescuing a Pokemon or a little girl's father or backtracking to the nearest town to heal her Pokemon. It doesn't sit well with her to stand idly by while there's something she can do to help anyone or anything in need of help (whether they ask for help or not), and her own safety means little in these situations. Threats to her person? Haha! Recognition and reward means little in the face of knowing she did right, and being praised for it is admittedly a little embarrassing! She only did what anyone would have done, right? Several characters (such as Cyrus and Cynthia) have commented on her kind heart, and it's not a hard thing to notice. Helping out means as much to her as her own personal aims, and this heroine finds it just as rewarding in a different sort of way. It's also worthy of notice that Dawn isn't afraid to break the law to follow her moral code. Investigating Team Galactic, and thwarting them, required a few instances of breaking and entering, and she'd happily do it again if she felt it was necessary.

People that fight her probably aren't expecting what they get, either. Conquering the Pokemon League is a prestigious feat only accomplished by the best of the best, and there's a good reason Dawn was able to earn the title of Pokemon Champion; For all her sweet and kind disposition, Dawn is pretty dang good at strategics and can
be a powerful opponent. She's never had a formal education (the only school in Sinnoh is in Jubilife, and she goes there for the first time when she starts her training journey), but she's learned what she can and has a surprising knowledge on some subjects and is always interested in learning more about virtually everything (it also helps that she's a quick learner). Dawn makes up for her lack of book learning with the ability to think fast on her feet, and taking care of herself on her journey has helped her mature and learn responsibility.

For all her natural good-person-ness, Dawn isn't infallible. If she doesn't realize something is wrong, she won't try and right it, and she won't always recognize a Bad Thing when she sees it; It took her a few meetings to finally see that something about Cyrus was off, and even then she didn't expect to see he was the leader of Team Galactic! While she isn't impatient to the same level as Barry, delays and waiting around make her eager to get going and she can get caught up in the excitement of very bad ideas to the point of going through with them. There's a decidedly vain side present in her; Her hairstyle certainly takes effort to get right and anyone who wears a miniskirt to go traveling the region probably isn't doing so for the most practical reasons. Not even experiencing the difficulties have gotten her to change her attire because she can be bullheadedly stubborn to a fault and won't always admit she's wrong or had a bad idea. Insulting or mocking her friends is a fast way to getting her angry, and she's not terribly good at hiding when she's mad.

All in all, Dawn is a teenage girl with a heroic streak that's miles wide. She loves adventure and getting to know people and Pokemon, and while her life hasn't been the simplest, safest, or even the most stable, she wouldn't have it any other way.

Character

Name: Dimitri Allen
Fandom: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Gender: Male
Age: Forty
Time Period: After the events of the game.
Wing Color: Slate grey
History: Layton wiki page.
Personality: First and foremost Dimitri is a scientist. He puts a lot of hard work into his research, formulating theories and testing them again and again until he manages to succeed. His main project, of course, is the creation of a time machine. Ten years prior to the events of the game this leads to disaster (the woman he loves, Claire, is seemingly killed in an explosion when pressured to test the prototype of said time machine) and it is after this that his character begins to undergo massive transformations. While he is still a very factual and determined man, he strays from pure science in favor of doing all that he can in order to bring back Claire. Instead of continuing his experiments and research on his own, Dimitri begins to adopt other personas in order to facilitate this goal. Most notably he begins to impersonate Professor Hershel Layton, taking on this guise and rising to power as a criminal overlord. In this way he's able to attain money for resources and also kidnaps many other scientists and engineers to force them to work on a new time machine that will allow him to go back and prevent the accident. Everything he does is for Claire. To this end he abandons both his morality and his career.

It is made clear that he does not personally work on this new machine when it is revealed that Clive, his partner in crime, has instead been having the scientists build a massive mechanized fortress. Dimitri is appalled to learn of this, realizing he has been tricked and abandoning his previous grudges against the real Layton. When he realizes furthermore that his original time machine ten years ago had been successful, and Claire had just been sent forward to what was now the present, he is able to speak with her and attain some closure before the instability of her existence in that time causes her to vanish. Only then is he wiling to let his goal rest, realizing it was never something that Claire wanted.

On the whole Dimitri is a well-educated, suave gentleman, remaining calm and cool whether he's acting villainous or not. He makes plans long in advance is only seen to be challenged intellectually by the likes of Professor Layton and Clive. He is also very patient, playing the part of the false Layton for years all for the sake of one plan. Adding to this patience is how unflappable he is. Even when -- after seemingly trapping Layton -- Layton manages to escape and outsmart him, he remains calm, going so far as appearing to admire the other's methods and cunning.

The way he thinks is very logical: he identifies something that he wants to do or sees as necessary and then develops a plan to see it through. When Layton tries to convince him that what he is doing is wrong he shoots down the other's ideas, refusing to listen and sticking to what he believes.

His way of speaking often lends itself to a flourish of the dramatic and his vocabulary is as impressive as would be expected of a man of his stature and education.

Name: Serah Farron
Fandom: Final Fantasy XIII-2
Gender: Female
Age: 21
Time Period: Serah’s canon point will be the beginning of Episode Four, when they are about to arrive in Academia 400AF. At this point in time, she doesn’t know that her visions are shortening her life or what Caius’ plan really is, and is mainly intent on finding Lightning and preventing Cocoon from falling.

[personal profile] faceplants 2012-05-07 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

Before the whole l’Cie business started, way back in XIII, Serah was just a normal teenage girl, attending school and living in the beach city of Bodhum. Three years later, she’s instead living in the Pulse colony of New Bodhum, can use magic, teaches children and misses her fiancé and older sister fiercely.

As a teenager, because Lightning was a soldier in the Guardian Corp and consequently away from home a lot, Serah learned to be independent. Their parents died when they were both still young, so it had always only been the two of them. During this time, Serah was very studious and excelled in school, more than smart enough to attend university in Eden. She had a special interest in history, which is basically the reason behind her becoming a l’Cie.

In XIII, Serah is the type of person who is quite mature and brave for her age, and she’s occasionally known to express wisdom beyond her years, like when she’s talking to Vanille. She’s not the type to be overwhelmingly selfish, since she knows Lightning supports the both of them with her job. And Serah, above everything else, cares about her sister a lot: she’s the only family Serah has left.

Unlike Lightning, though, Serah is very sociable and friendly; she makes friends easily. So it was pretty inevitable that she would meet Snow, the leader of NORA, and fall for him. She was lonely, maybe, and she’d found someone who understood and adored her. At her core, Serah’s a bit of a romantic, and that’s a part of her that’s not as mature as the rest: it’s the part of her that refuses to accept Lightning’s disapproval of Snow. Even though a lot of that disapproval has to do with Serah choosing Snow over attending university.

She’s also naïve in the respect that she doesn’t fully understand the world around her; she’s not completely world-wise in XIII. While Serah is independent and has been for a while, she has a certain naïve curiosity that ends up being to her detriment. The prime example of this is her choosing to explore the Pulse Vestige, despite knowing the dangers. The consequence? Becoming a l’Cie. Serah was terrified of becoming a monster, of becoming an enemy to the people she loved. So her choice was to push them away instead and try to deal with it alone.

It wasn’t about trust or love—it was about fear at what she’d become and fear that she might hurt Snow or Lightning. What she ended up underestimating were Snow’s feelings for her, but Serah tried to be brave enough to face it alone. This bravery allowed her to defy her Focus (well, along with some divine intervention) and turn to crystal regardless.

In XIII-2, three years have passed since Serah awoke from her crystal sleep, and the world is greatly changed. Instead of reuniting with her sister at the end of XIII, Lightning ended up in Valhalla, and Serah was the only one who remembered that she wasn’t in the crystal pillar with Fang and Vanille.

Living in New Bodhum with NORA, Serah was able to go on with a semblance of normal life. But, especially after Snow left, she felt lonely and abandoned, and put on a brave face to deal with this. She first appears in XIII-2 crying and freaking out over the meteorite crash, screaming out for Lightning to help her. But this impression doesn’t last long: Serah shows that she’s more than capable of being tough and defending herself, and her decision to travel with Noel is part of this.

She’s a very kind and caring person, as demonstrated by showing concern for Noel despite knowing nothing about him in the beginning. But throughout the journey, she offers him advice and encouragement, being the morale booster of the group. Serah’s very resilient in that respect; she’s not completely in Stepford Smiler territory like Vanille, but she can shrug off her own negative feelings to keep moving forward.

Serah can also be intimidating when angered, especially to the children of New Bodhum. This earns her the nickname of “Meanie Miss Farron”. She’s said to resemble Lightning when she’s looking angry or serious—so, even though she’s the friendlier of the two, she definitely has inherited some of the Farron traits. But, most of all, her bravery has carried over into XIII-2. Despite not knowing what lies ahead, Serah keeps going forward to find her sister; even after she finds out Snow is a l’Cie again and he disappears right in front of her. She still wants to save Cocoon and change the future, no matter what.

Vanille sums up Serah in a good way. “Even if there was nothing waiting for her, Serah was brave enough to face it.”

Strengths: Serah is pretty intelligent (despite certain Live Trigger options) as she was confirmed to be a straight-A student in school, and has become a teacher in the three short years since Cocoon’s fall. She’s also brave, as noted above, in defying her Focus and leaving the security of New Bodhum to find Lightning and, later, change the future.

Serah can use magic too, since Cocoon’s fall, and is decent with both a sword and bow, so she can definitely hold her own in battle. She’s a tough person in general, in a different way to her sister; while outwardly she can be sensitive and cry and seem scared, when the going gets tough, she stands her ground and pushes forward. Like at the beginning of the game when New Bodhum is attacked, and when Snow disappears in the Sunleth Waterscape.

Weaknesses: Despite her battle prowess, Serah is still a twig and her physical strength can’t match the likes of Noel or Lightning. And despite her bravery, Serah can sometimes be overwhelmed by the situation, such as when she calls out for Lightning’s aid in the beginning. She sometimes needs a push into the action; instead of trying to find Lightning herself, she allowed Snow to go, and waited around for them to come back.

She’s also sometimes not forthright enough with her feelings; in a lot of situations she can stand up for herself, but there are occasions where she doesn’t. In XIII when she’s trying to tell Lightning she’s a l’Cie, in XIII-2 when Snow is leaving, again when she is reunited with him and he says “the wedding is on hold”, without realising that comment has upset her. At the end of the day, Serah is still a young girl, and sometimes these feelings get the better of her—even in XIII-2, when she has become a warrior in her own right.

And also, of course, wandering into a Pulse Vestige out of curiosity wasn't ever the greatest idea in the world.

Personality: When you first meet Noel the first thing you might notice about him is his confident demeanor. He holds himself well and he knows that he's good at what he does. Once he starts something he never gives up. The easiest way to explain this characteristic of his personality is by his adventures with Serah. He took up his journey in order to return Serah to her sister and to change his unfortunate future. Noel never stops to doubt himself and he always carries himself forward. Confidence is one of his key features. That doesn't mean he is arrogant by any means. Noel worked hard to be strong and he knows that he is rather strong for his age. Lightning entrusted him with the task of returning Serah to her and he agreed to uphold it with all his might. Noel isn't just talk. He acts based on his words and he'll do everything in his power to make it a reality.

Noel has some trouble conveying his feelings in words. That doesn't necessarily mean that words are his only means of expressing emotion. Even if Noel doesn't know how to explain his emotions, he doesn't always have to say it. When Noel met Snow for the first time he was visibly angry at Snow. Serah could notice that fact on her own. It isn't an exaggeration to say that Noel wears his heart on his sleeve. It's easy to tell if he's troubled by something. He's very expressive and honest to his own feelings. Honesty is one of Noel's stronger qualities. He's always honest to himself and he doesn't go out of his way to lie about things. Whenever he was questioned by NORA or Serah he would honestly speak the truth. He thinks that lying puts you in a worse position and you'll only get in trouble that way.

The fact that Noel realizes that there are consequences to your actions makes him mature. Another instance of Noel being mature was when he saw the Giant Flan in the Sunleth Waterscape. He could tell it was too strong for him to fight head on, so he used strategics and ran away. Unlike Snow, Noel doesn't charge ahead into battle and he is very cautious about that sort of thing. It also helps that Noel is an experienced hunter and he isn't reckless. He’s perceptive about his surroundings and he can tell when things are out of place. In New Bodhum, Noel could spot abnormalities in Serah’s mirror which lead to the discovery of an artefact relics.

Seeing so many people makes Noel happy because he knew it was possible for him to make his dream into a reality. He demonstrates general interest in culture and city landscapes. Noel appreciates the hard work of others and mankind as a whole. When he reached Academia he was excited to see so many things built and people living there. He thinks that it’s okay to dream as long as someone else helps you hold up the ideal. As long as people want something to happen with all their heart he believes it’ll come true. Noel constantly reassures Serah with this during their travels.

Towards children, Noel is a bit more gentle than usual. He tries to be kind to Serah’s students. A child from her class stole something from her, but he didn’t immediately yell at him. Noel tries to be reasonable with others. He normally has good intentions in mind for everyone. If your name isn’t Snow Villiers he’ll try his best to be well mannered. The reason why Noel hates Snow so much is because Snow thinks he can protect everyone when in reality he’s only hurting himself and others around him. Noel dislikes that type of "hot headed" attitude because he thinks Snow is just fantasizing about heroism and he leaves people behind in the process of it. Noel hates Snow, but he also understands his motives and morals.

A person that's worth mentioning is Noel's grandmother. She was born on Gran Pulse and died at the age of 50. When he was growing up his grandmother spoiled him and he quickly grew attached to her. Whenever the subject of his grandmother is brought up he sounds grateful to have had her in his life. In all he regretted his actions and thought he could learn more from other people if he had paid more attention to them.

It isn't very easy for Noel to talk about his past. A certain points he's even reluctant to tell Serah about his experiences. For him his past is filled with pain and regret, but he doesn't think poorly of it. He doesn't consider his experiences a waste and he always looks forward to learning new things. Noel's a person who'll think about the positive and negative sides to things. He isn't narrow minded and doesn't see things in black and white. Serah explained her life style to Noel and he didn't think her experiences were all bad. There was time for her to grow as a family with NORA and she's had students to accompany her during her time there. He cherishes the people he meets and it shows when he sees the NORA gang and Serah hanging around together in New Bodhum. In short Noel's the kind of person who tries to make every moment count.

In all, Noel's speech pattern is very informal. He never uses anything complicated and he isn't stiff when he talks to people. He is a deep thinker and his thoughts take more precedence over his words. Up front, Noel presents himself as a straightforward person. He usually says what he means and he can be a little too blunt. Despite that aspect of him, he does realize that it could be hurtful to other people. Being too direct can be a bad thing. At times he can be easily misunderstood.

His relationships with Caius Ballad and Paddra Nsu-Yeul are vital for Noel's overall development as a character. Yeul was the seeress and Noel only wished for her happiness. In their village: Caius, Noel, and Yeul were the only ones left alive and because of this Yeul often got lonely. This is the reason why Noel wanted to see a world with more people in it. Noel's desire to see more people was so strong that a gate opened for him and allowed him to travel through the void beyond. He worries over people often and he does a lot for their sake. Serah notices this fact about him when she collapses from exhaustion in the Augusta Tower.

An interesting fact about Noel is that he has a disregard for rules and authority. When someone wants to succeed as the next Guardian they have to kill the previous one to prove their strength. He wanted to fight Caius, but not kill him. Noel even tells Caius that he wouldn't follow stiff rules if it would make people unhappy. He cares about the happiness of those around him. On Yeul's birthday he wanted to please her by giving her a large feast. Despite his age, he's very experienced and mature.

Strengths:

Physical:
When Noel was growing up he trained to be a guardian. That goes without saying Noel is pretty strong. He can handle a fight on his own and he actively enjoys battle. Fighting is something he does a lot of. He can take on various monsters such as dragons and unusual beasts of many sizes. His fighting style consists of him utilizing two swords. (One of them is long and the other one is shorter for so it could have a different purpose, such as stabbing.) Noel originally picked up the sword so he could fight Caius. Caius himself uses one heavy sword in battle. In order to defeat that Noel took it upon himself to use two. His fighting style is rather simplistic, but effective. He prefers to fight people head on and there are no tricks to his style. Noel has the strongest attack status of the whole party. Noel's sufficient in casting powerful magic. His role as ravager allows him to use basic elements such as fire, water, thunder and ice in battle. Unlike the others who had to become L'cie for that power, casting magic comes more naturally for him.

Mental: After coming through the Historia Crux, time travel became one of his areas of expertise. Worlds being pulled together and overlapping aren’t unusual for him to say the least. Noel’s interested in things that don’t belong in certain places because to him those are considered paradoxes. For the most part Noel is curious about the world around him. He often questions why things are placed in certain areas and he pays attention to little details trying to theorize around them. Sometimes he’ll assume that another force is at work or things just happen because they do. His theories have strong basis to them and he doesn’t say them without reason. Noel often theorized with Hope and Alyssa about abnormalities and discrepancies in surrounding areas. When he went to visit the Bresha Ruins he thought about a lot of "what if" scenarios.

Emotional: He does have a few leadership qualities. In New Bodhum a meteorite attacked the village and Noel was quick to sense danger. He could prioritize the situation accordingly and advised Serah to talk to him later. On top of that he took Lebreau into a safe and secure location without anyone prompting him to do so. In a scenario of crisis, Noel can hold himself calmly and he doesn't lose his sense of judgement. His experience as a hunter affected that part of his personality.

Weaknesses:

Physical: Noel is a human. He can die if he's wounded badly and there are other people in his canon that are stronger than him. While comparing him to Lightning, Noel is clearly the weaker one. By Final Fantasy XIII-2 Lightning is capable of fighting off armies and that isn't something Noel is capable of doing on his own. He doesn't have an infinite supply of stamina and he can get tired during battle.

Mental: When Noel entered the time gate to reach Valhalla, he lost some of his memories. One of the things he can't remember is how Yeul died. His displaced memories confuse him and sometimes it'll stop him from accomplishing what's important. It's also important to note that he's very ignorant of how technology works. In the Augusta Tower he couldn't operate the console and had Serah do it for him. Then he outright tells her that machinery is was too fancy for his tastes and he has no idea what's going on inside of them. This will make it difficult for him to deal with those kinds of situations. Noel is a more practical and simple person. In his world there wasn’t much time for fun recreational activities, so he isn't knowledgeable in that subject. Serah compares Mog to something you’d find in an amusement park. Noel responds by saying he doesn’t know what an amusement park is because of his living circumstances. In that regard he’s much like Fang and Vanille because the three of them were born on Gran Pulse without much time for self-enjoyment.

Emotional: Something you should know about Noel is that he came from place where hunting was a norm and people were scarce in numbers. Noel was the last person born. When he was growing up he watched everyone around him die due to various causes. It isn't very surprising to say that Noel's still emotionally wounded from all of his losses. By the time he reaches the Sunleth Waterscape with Serah he tells her that he couldn't love someone and be apart from them for so long. It's evident that he has a hard time dealing with the fact people can leave from your life at any moment. Coming from a world lack of people makes it harder for him to talk to people as well. People normally don't trust Noel at first. For most people, it's unbelievable to think that in another world humans died off one by one. He understands that much and he isn't oblivious to it. In fact Noel will try to make the situation better by explaining things slowly and carefully. An example of this was when Gadot thought Noel was in New Bodhum to cause trouble for NORA and Serah.

Samples
First Person:Q & A please!

Third Person
: In the distance Noel could see a large forest. Trees of many sizes stood before him. A vast forest expanded further than he could see. He tapped his fingers together for a moment and then shifted into a position where he could fold his arms together. Where exactly did he end up? Noel gave himself some time to think. He wasn't in any rush. He had all the time he needed. That was something he was sure of. With access to the Historia Crux, he didn't need to worry about time. He had a means of going back and forth through the timeline. Or so he thought.

"Is this the Archylte Steppe from another time? Hm....I think someone is trying to mess around here."

The grassy areas remind him of it, but he didn't remember there being so many trees. How much time has passed by? He couldn't remember exactly what happen and his face slipped into an expression that said he was irritated. One thing Noel was positive about was that he sure he had used the artefact to get to Academia 400 AF. Maybe he miscalculated somewhere. Oh well. There isn't any need for him to rush. Just because he couldn't get to Valhalla right away didn't mean that this journey wouldn't be interesting. Noel can learn something here. There was also a possibility that Lightning may be watching from Valhalla. After all she was the one who told him that she could see everything from there. It was only a matter of time before he could reach his goal.

A world with people in it.

Noel was hopeful for the future and he thought he could change things here and now. There were many things that were unclear to him from his subjectivity, but that didn't stop him from going forward. It was worrisome how Serah wasn't anywhere near him at the moment. Due to a long series of events she eventually became his travel companion. The two of them both wanted to change the future into something better.

"Standing around won't solve anything."

Character

Name: Christ Lightfellow
Fandom: Suikoden (III)
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Time Period: Post game.
Wing Color: Smoke Gray
History: I have not lived long enough to become a myth.
She bears the true fire rune. Since the article basically stops after the third chapter, I’ll expand on it.

After Chris agrees to take The True Fire Rune, Chris, Hugo, and Geddoe take on The True Fire Reincarnation as a test. After receiving the true fire rune, the group is attacked by the destroyers. The spirit of the last Flame Champion appears and stops Luc from taking the rune.

After the incident, Chris wakes up in Chisha Village, where the Harmonia army had begun its invasion. Chris and Salome attempt but fail to gain the trust of the Grassland armies. The divided armies face defeat at the hands of Harmonia, and the pattern repeats at Duck Village. The army is forced to retreat to Brass Castle, where Caesar Silverberg is named official strategist, and Chris decides it is time to accept on the role of Flame Champion. She gives a speech, which rallies the spirits of all the troops, and the Grasslands chiefs agree to unite with the knights under the banner of the new Flame Champion. The Fire Bringer army claims their first victory in the next battle. Soon thereafter, the headquarters moves to Budehuc castle.

It is not long after that Chris sees Jimba entering the ancient highway, and she follows him. She spots the destroyers at the entrance of the Sindar ruins in there; they’ve finally managed to open the door. Eventually, she takes on Sarah. After, The True Water Rune goes out of control, and when she finds the rune, she discovers a dying Jimba. Jimba asks Chris to go into the rune, where Chris meets the spirit of the rune, and she learns Jimba is really Wyatt Lightfellow, her father. Upon exiting Chris says her good-bye, and the rune is given to Hugo.

Chris is called back to Brass Castle to take care of some paper work for the council, and there Sarah, under the guise of Yumi, tricks Chris to following her. Sarah takes Chris’s true rune. The real Alma Kinan finds Chris in the forest, and will join the Fire Bringer army. They return to Brass Castle, and soon thereafter a battle with Yuber commences. During the battle, Sasarai announces that Harmonia is joining the cause, after Luc’s betrayal to Harmonia.

As the Fire Bringer army sits around debating where they could be holding the ritual, Nash comes with the information. Once Caesar confirms from whom, the army leaves for the site. Caesar accompanies Chris and her group to obtain the true fire rune. When they make it the pedestal, surprisingly it is free from monsters. Albert Silverberg comes forwards and tells Chris and Caesar of his schemes, and leaves them to finish the rest.

It is soon after the rest of the true rune bearers return, and they move on towards Luc. When they find him, he attempts to persuade Chris to join his cause. Even showing her the future that he is trying to prevent, but she does not budge in her position. Even if it is a possibility, it is not worth the sacrifice. The wind reincarnation appears, and the group defeats it, thus ending the war. Following the war, Chris and the knights return to Brass Castle.

[Fannon note: Chris is taken from the game, but I am borrowing very lightly from the manga for her experience at the Zexen Recruit Academy. Where she faced challenges because of her gender, but rose above it, and went to graduate at the top of her class, in three years. In turn, she becomes Galahad’s squire.]

Character

Name: Asbel Lhant
Fandom: Tales of Graces
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Time Period: post-game F arc, after he, Cheria, and Sophie walk off together.
Wing Color: White
History: I will spare your eyes because I know you won't read it anyway.

Personality: As a child, Asbel was... Well, he was a little boy, basically. With his behavior, you'd never think him to be the son of a noble. He was impatient and impulsive, always rushing on ahead to try and do something new and exciting, regardless of whether others were willing to do the same. He was stubborn; once he set his mind on something, it was incredibly difficult to dissuade him. His manner of speech was unbefitting of that of the son of Lord Lhant, speaking rudely and informally to anyone he talks to, including (and especially, really) his own parents. He was also mischievous and fun-loving, looking to have a good time and live life to the fullest, trying to get his friends involved in his plans. He liked to cause trouble, always teasing his little brother Hubert. But he was also energetic, enthusiastic, and optimistic about things. When there was something going on, you can bet he wanted to check it out because it was probably hella cool. This would often get him into a big mess, but he didn't care, because things would surely get better! He was a cheerful and honest boy, almost to a fault, especially when it came to telling others how it is; he was very blunt at times, in other words. He cared about his friends, and would do anything to protect them, especially if it was his own fault they were in danger. He was quite open about his feelings regarding almost anything, but was very oblivious to almost anyone else's. He was really dense, honestly. Like I said, basically, he was a boy. This behavior continued on until a tragedy occurred in a cavern beneath the city of Barona. While waiting for their friend Richard to show up, Asbel and his friends come across this cavern when looking for him. In the depths, they discover an unconscious Richard and go to wake him. Unfortunately for them, a powerful monster appears and knocks Asbel, Cheria, and Hubert out cold, and it is up to Sophie to stop it.

When Asbel comes to, he finds himself in his house, where his father informs that Sophie died in the incident, and that Hubert has been moved to Strahta, taken in by the Oswell family to be raised by them. This information has a tremendous impact on him and shapes his future actions. Distraught by this news, Asbel turns his back on the one person still left there for him--Cheria--and decides to travel back to Windor to train in the Knights Training Academy there, resolving himself to become stronger to protect those he holds dear. He cuts off most ties with his family, embittering their strained relationship more than it was by this turn of events, and even selling off his father's treasured sword just to afford enrolling. This is all at the age of 11.

Fastforward seven years: A lot has changed for Asbel, and yet a lot hasn't. Gone is his mischievous, childish behavior, having grown into a polite and diligent swordsman. Seven years of knighthood training have led him to develop a little thing called manners, causing him to show extreme respect to those who deserve it, such as his mentor, Malik. He's confident in his abilities with a sword, but not so much when it comes to being able to use said sword abilities to protect others. True to his nature as a knight, as well as his own inherently stubborn nature, Asbel is duty-driven and bound, always sticking to his word to accomplish what he needs to do, whether that's to reclaim Lhant or to protect his friends. Speaking of which, he is fiercely protective of his friends. He's not too concerned about his own fate, but he will put himself in harm's way time and time again for their sake.
He's still not the sharpest tool in the shed, however. He's not stupid, by any means. After all, being the son of a noble, and having gone to knight school, you'd have to assume he actually has a formal education. He's just... incredibly dense, and if something's not readily apparent, it can fly right over his head. ...Especially when it comes to a certain old childhood friend's feelings towards him. He's leveled out a little with age, but he still maintains that carefree attitude of his from childhood, especially evident when having won a battle with his comrades. Possessing a strong will to the point of stubbornness, once Asbel sets his mind to accomplish something, it's rare that he'll back down, taking his promises very seriously. And it'll utterly destroy him inside if he's unable to fulfill that promise in the end (perhaps quite literally in the case of the promise he makes at the end of the game). That stubbornness is a dual-edged blade, however. Due to what happened seven years ago, he's incredibly attached to Sophie; he frequently unknowingly compares the Sophie of present day to the Sophie that died seven years ago, even though the former has no recollection of that time.

Strengths:
Physical: Asbel is really good with a sword. He's capable of using two different fighting styles, using his sword in both a sheathed state to hit the enemy with a combination of quick strikes and kicks, and a drawn state in which he delivers powerful slash attacks. He can quickly switch from the sheathed style to the drawn style and use them in tandem to deliver devastating attack combos. He can wield a variety of elements in his attacks, and strike with power, speed, and precision. It can also be assumed that he is in peak physical condition, judging by his ability to use said fighting style so effectively. He's very tenacious as well; despite getting knocked around time and time again, he'll stand right back up and fight to the last breath if it means protecting the people he cares about.

Furthermore, now he can wield Lambda's power as well, able to summon dark flames that both protect him and harm foes.
Mental: Asbel's got a very strong sense of commitment and duty, especially to his friends and his family. His purpose for joining the knights was all so he could gain the strength to protect his loved ones. Later, after receiving word that his father passed away, he willingly resigns from the knights, even though it was his dream to join in the first place, because he knows it's his duty to take his father's place. When Hubert takes that right away from him, he does everything in his power to prove he's the rightful heir to the title of Lord Lhant. In addition to that, when helping Richard reclaim his kingdom, he swears to become "Richard's sword" and fights alongside him, later fighting against him all just to save him. He's not the smartest guy around, but he's got a pretty decent intelligence and cunning. He knew how to handle bartering for items at the age of 11, and he's able to come up with pretty cunning attack strategies on his own at times. These traits will lead him to be an effective leader for his territory. ...Someday.
Emotional: Call it bullheadedness, stubbornness, what have you, but Asbel's got a very strong will. Once he starts on something, he will not back down, no matter how dangerous it may seem, all because his friends are that important to him. And hey, it says something about a guy when he willingly lets himself get possessed by the demon that was controlling his best friend, and subdues it in a mental battle. When he's not flipping his shit over something terrible that happens, he's also actually a pretty carefree guy, with more and more of that innate carefree nature of his showing itself as the game progresses.
He also acknowledges the mistakes of his past, and has a strong desire to fix them. During the first half of the game, he tries to rectify the strained relationships he has with Cheria and Hubert. In addition, in an optional sidequest, Asbel goes on a mission to retrieve his father's prized sword, which he had previously sold just so he could attend the Academy. Along the way, he learns about the sword's history and about his father, and in turn, has it repaired, revealing it to be the famed Eleth Sword, Excalibur.

Weaknesses:
Physical: Although good with the sword, Asbel's definitely no master, always possessing the capability to grow better. Some of his attacks, especially his more powerful attacks also have a slow startup time, often leaving him wide open to attacks. In addition, although he can seamlessly switch from sheathed to drawn style, the opposite doesn't hold true, often leaving himself open when trying to do so. Only with certain combinations can he get around this obvious weakness. He's also essentially middling in his "parameters", neither excelling nor failing in any particular stat. He's well-rounded, which is both good and bad. Besides that, he is still, in fact, human. He suffers injuries, bleeds, and can die if you hit him hard enough.
Mental: Asbel is dense. Like, really, really dense. He seems to miss the big picture often, and comments often fly right over his head. For instance, in a sidequest, he receives a letter from Richard after the events involving him have already happened. After reading the letter, he assumes that what Richard was saying is that he needed Asbel's help... When he actually just wanted the chance to see him again. Him remaining completely oblivious to Cheria's obvious affection for him for most of the game doesn't help, either. He, like most main protagonists, also has a tendency to not always think things through, especially when his friends are involved. He will rush right into battle to protect them! ...And get smacked around.
Emotional: Hoooo boy. Let's see... Well, in a word, Asbel is... emotionally retarded. He's terrible at expressing himself properly. He was never able to tell his dad that he did actually love him, and he struggles with telling Cheria he loves her. When he gets frustrated, which isn't hard, he responds with anger. It's not especially difficult to anger him, especially when it concerns one of his friends, and he's got quite a guilt complex over not being able to protect them. He's also ridiculously stubborn, never knowing quite when to call it quits. Finally, as a note, he has a tendency to be self-sacrificial, putting himself in harm's way just so his friends aren't put into danger themselves, most especially Sophie because of what happened before. This proves itself several times during the story, but most especially during one of the final scenes of the game, where he pushes Sophie out of the way and allows Lambda to possess him just so she doesn't have to die.
