PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!
Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!
PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.
If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.
The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.
Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.
If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!
A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.
Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!
Jane Foster | Reserved | 2/2
An astrophysicist by trade and extraordinarily ambitious, Jane is probably, first and foremost, an incredible intellectual workhorse. She is married to her study, relentlessly driven by it to discover quite literally one of the greatest secrets of the universe. She is motivated, studious, focused to the point of obsession, and unbelievably, stubbornly determined to see through the projects she starts on. This drive defines her whole life, since her work is her whole life. Having hit a man with a car, she insists her two friends take him to the hospital while she stays behind to study a strange phenomenon. That's dedication.
Not to say that Jane is incapable of thinking of other things. Jane is actually quite a nice person, though she can be very fierce and a little sharp when she needs to be, issuing startled orders and insisting on a certain way things need to be. Still, she tends to be at her fiercest when dealing with her work, to the point of arguing with a shadowy federal agency that is "appropriating" her things, even trying to physically take her things back from them. Not everyone has the balls of steel required to yell in the face of a bunch of shades-wearing men with guns and vans and jackboots. Outside of that, though, the claws are generally sheathed. She can even be outright awkward, stumbling over her words, speaking rapidly, and smiling nervously, especially in situations where she's out of her league or unfamiliar.
Jane is earnest and forthright, honest about what she wants and what she's trying to do with her life. She's not a terrific liar, often too awkward or nervous to pull it off convincingly. That earnestness can translate into outright nerdiness when she's excited about certain astrophysical topics, and sometimes a little rambling. She seems to talk when she's excited, when she's nervous -- talking is the way Jane fills the silences she otherwise doesn't quite know how to deal with.
None of this is to say she's actually a socially nervous person. At least, not all the time. She's perfectly capable of handling herself like an adult. But there is this sense that she is always a little preoccupied by something. Really, truly, Jane's life revolves around her work. It shapes the person she is, the person she'll become, the person she wants to be -- her iron-clad determination to discover one of the greatest secrets of the universe is the reason Jane Foster gets out of bed every day.
As she is a scientist by trade, you'd expect Jane to be the skeptical sort. But while she is practical, she seems actually quite willing to believe the unbelievable. Perhaps it's the nature of her work, treading on the razor-thin edge between science fact and science fiction. But she accepts Thor's explanation of the universe, of the rainbow bridge and the bifrost, before actually seeing the proof for herself. Her logical mind slots what he says of magic into what she knows of science. She's creative, innovative in a way that might well explain why she's the one coming up with the workable theories of time-space bridges instead of people too deeply mired in quantum mechanical proofs. She's actually kind of a dreamer, spending long nights watching stars when she can't sleep. Jane may be fiercely independent, but she's also an idealist - believing quite literally that magic is just science we don't understand yet.
She's also, finally, pretty modest. She lives in a trailer, and though she calls it "temporary" and is a little embarrassed when Thor walks in, she obviously doesn't mind it too much. It's a sacrifice she's making for her work, and as with all things related to her work, she's okay with it if it gets the job she wants done. So she's not a very frivolous person, with no real need for luxuries or finery. This is somewhat evidenced in the way she dresses, which involves an unfortunate amount of flannel and goofy t-shirts.
Strengths: Jane has no real physical strengths to speak of. Not only is she a squishy human, she's a squishy nerdy human. Her strength is in her brains, not her brawn. In a fight she would be totally devastated, so mostly she'd try to stay out of them.
Emotionally, though -- emotionally, Jane's pretty solid. More than solid. You try falling in love with an actual god of thunder, only to lose him completely and be left to wonder what happened to him, or if he even survived. Not only does she not submit to moping or fretfulness, she goes in the complete other direction towards making it better with her own hands, trusting in her own capabilities to reach him and bring him back. There's no hesitance - only action. Jane seems really pretty resilient when it comes to blows that might really upset other people.
Mentally, of course, she's a brilliant astrophysicist, maybe one of the foremost in the world. Though canon doesn't indicate the exact nature of it, there is mention of "the Foster theory," which seems to hint that Jane has put together an actual working theory on the nature of Einstein-Rosen bridges that might perhaps even be testable - a pretty incredible feat. She's whip-smart, and her sharpness is never to be underestimated.
Weaknesses: Squishy, squishy, squishy human. This part has basically been covered.
Emotionally, there are things that can get to Jane. She may not be fazed by Thor's disappearance, but she takes it very, very hard when her research is stolen. Even when her notebook is returned to her, she nearly breaks down in tears at what she seems to perceive as the complete futility of trying to continue, and it's only Thor's reassurance that helps her move on. Again and again, it seems her life is so completely tied to her work that losing it is a huge blow to her, a problem that will come up in Luceti, so cut off from the world and life she's known.
Mentally, while she is smart, well … her smarts are mostly book smarts. Though she's not socially awkward to the point of inability to function, she has her moments of weirdness or oddly specific intensity in the worst moments. ("Hospital. You go, I'll stay.") Her common sense smarts don't seem to be all that high - after all, she drives Thor out to S.H.I.E.L.D's facility despite Erik's explicit warnings not to, and sticks around in the pouring rain with the risk of maybe getting spotted above the all-out panic that ensues below. Jane can be reckless when she pursues something she really wants, making impulsive decisions that aren't the wisest, and can lead her into serious trouble.
Samples
First Person: [ There is the sound of a deep, deep breath. ]
Okay. Right. This is okay. It's fine. This is going to be totally fine, I can just--
Alright. [ Obviously to whoever's listening, this time. ] I know I'm probably one of hundreds of people to have said this, but I'm really not supposed to be here. I mean, a journal that's half magic, half iPad? And -- and wings? No, this is just -- this isn't right. I need to be home. I need access to my equipment, my research -- in fact, a stabilized Einstein-Rosen bridge could probably get everyone here home!
[ She's lost track of who she was talking so. And she sighs, heavily, angry and defeated. ]
Instead I end up here. It's so -- quaint. Aside from the weird high rise buildings, those are a little out of place. But the rest of it? It's like I stepped into some old English countryside or something. Bizarre. Does anyone here even have a computer? Or know anything about astrophysics?
I'm going to have to start all over. For real, this time.
Third Person: It was crushing. It physically hurt, a knot of anger and hurt and anxiety lodged behind her ribcage. Losing her life's work once had been enough -- but this is an entirely different ballgame, and she knows it.
Waking up had been enough of a shock -- stripped down to a summer dress, waking up on a bench in what looked like a town square right out of some quaint European village. She'd thought she was dreaming. Then she'd thought she was hallucinating. Then her mind had raced to the realms Thor had explained to her. But no, none of this fit with her understanding of Norse mythology. Even reaching outside that -- other worlds, other planets, of course it was possible, no one knew that better than her, but how, without her conscious knowledge, without--?
Then she'd noticed the wings. And that had produced a shriek of surprise.
After dealing with the handful of concerned locals that had come over to assist her, embarrassed enough that she felt like her ears were probably red, too, Jane had made her way to the clothes shop (no currency - weird) and found something more practical to wear. Then she'd sat back down on the bench on which she'd awoken and read from her strange technomagical little journal for hours. She discovered quite a bit in that time, and the sun was beginning to set by the time she closed it and stretched, massaging the crick in her neck and looking out over the fountain.
… she was stuck here. Truly, irrevocably stuck in this place. It reminded her, hauntingly, of what had happened to Thor -- how he'd vanished and never returned. What would SHIELD think had happened to her? And what -- of course she'd been watching the news, she'd heard all about what had happened in New York, and -- she'd wanted so badly to contact him, realizing too late why she'd been transferred, had hoped against hope she might somehow--
But now she was here. Far out of his reach, potentially.
And really, that wasn't what depressed her the most. Missing Thor was an ache she'd come to live with. Something she'd converted into fuel for her ever-burning fire of research, of learning, of doing. But now she was cut off from that, too. Her life's work. Her everything. Gone. No research. No Earth. No Thor. No Darcy. No Erik. Not even SHIELD, as prickly as she'd found many of their agents. No nothing. She had been stripped of everything.
Dusk was beginning to fall by the time Jane finally rose from her seat. Her steps, as they took her away from the square, were slow, aimless, and she followed the dying light. It was happenstance that a wandering, kind stranger noticed her blank state and asked her where she was headed, and eventually helped her locate an empty apartment to stay in. But Jane wasn't all there the entire time.
It hurt. It truly hurt. To have to begin again...
But she couldn't give up. No matter how bad it hurt, no matter how futile it seemed. Thor had shown her that. And as she found herself abruptly standing in a new apartment, alone, she clutched her journal in a white-knuckled grip and decided that, come morning, she would ask for a computer.
