Personality:

Most of Kotarou's life revolves around fighting and getting stronger for both his own benefit and so he can better protect his friends. There was a time when he wouldn't hesitate to bring his fists in to solve any and all of his problems, though through training and self-realisation he's learnt sometimes it's better to just wait things out than charge in foolishly. He's not fond of receiving training from other people as he insists he is self-trained, though he has trained under the senator of Megalo-Mesembria (there was little choice given the circumstances), Kaede (after losing to Negi and being determined to not fall further behind him) as well as taking part in Evangeline's survival training.

Superhuman feats of strength like performing press-ups with a huge boulder weighing down on his back and deflecting powerful spells and attacks with his fist are nothing to Kotarou. It takes a lot of punishment for Kotarou to finally kick the bucket, having been partially petrified in the past, being crushed into the ground and having a sword impale him right through his body and pin him. He's able to hold his own against Rakan, one of the strongest fighters in all of Mundus Magicus and a member of Ala Rubra, for forty three seconds before only fainting after having multiple swords pierce his body. Most recently, Kotarou has survived having his stomach pierced during a fight with Tertium, after which he goes on to hold off Quintum whilst the rest of his party escapes. From having been in so many battles Kotarou is good at indentifying what his opponents are planning and when he's calm he can strategise and think on his feet pretty well when he needs to. He's experienced enough in battle that he can nonchalantly dodge the most devastating of attacks and even have time to comment on the battle.

It takes very little to anger Kotarou and there are times where he has started arguments over the smallest of things, even over agreeing about something. Thugs and other hot-heads like himself can easily rile him up, even to the point where after travelling back in time during the Mahora Festival he ends up fighting with his past self. It's not uncommon for Kotarou to rise up to even the smallest taunt or challenge aimed at him. If he ever finds himself losing an argument Kotarou will either storm off or respond childishly as a last resort.

When first meeting someone if they are a girl Kotarou will refer to them as neechan and will later fix that to the end of their name, e.g. Natsumi-neechan. Depending on how familiar he is with someone this can give way to a nickname of sorts, such as 'Chizu-né' for Chizuru. The same can go for people his isn't as friendly with, adopting names like 'squirt' and 'Yuetchi' for Yue. Guys either don't receive honorifics or are mockingly referred to as 'chan', such as 'Kage-chan'.

When it comes to women Kotarou can act in a whole number of different ways depending on the situation. As he sees 'being a man' involves standing up for and protecting women he will go out of his way to ensure he doesn't hit a girl, such as when he defeated Sakura Mei during the Mahora Fest using the air pressure from his punch to knock her out of the ring. The one time he has hit a girl was only due to the dire circumstances and because another girl and his friend, Asuna, was in danger. Compared to best friend Negi, Kotarou feels more responsibility when it comes to relationships with girls. He asks Natsumi for a pactio not because it's necessary he gets the added strength but because he wants to make the pactio to better protect her. Despite this Kotarou has his reservations about relationships with other girls and at one point associated loving someone with weakness, though he has gotten over this to some extent seeing as he has formed his own pactio. There are times when Kotarou can be cheeky and a tad perverted in his humour when it comes to girls, such as commenting on the colour of Nodoka's panties and flipping Brigitte's skirt when he shows up to rescue Haruna, Nodoka and Chisame. Finally, because of his age if nothing else, Kotarou has no problem saying out loud that women are unberable, even saying he hates women after finding out everyone in his party dreamt about 'romance stuff' when trapped in Cosmo Entelecheia and letting slip that Natsumi is 'high maintenance'.

Whilst being more respectful towards women for the most part Kotarou has his own thoughts and ideas on how men should act. He constantly asks Negi if he's a real man during training and even comments on what he thinks a man should and should not do. When Natsumi refers to Kagetaro, a man who previously attacked and badly injured Negi, a bad guy, Kotarou comments that only a sap would bring up good and evil in a fight between men. 'The only thing between fighting men is different points of view'.

Sympathising with others isn't something Kotarou does often or very well. He doesn't like seeing his friends pull themselves down and acting all depressed. When first arriving on Mundus Magicus Negi beats himself up over not being strong enough, leading to Kotarou punching Negi in the face and purposely trying to piss him off to show him how he isn't weak and he's capable enough to make things right (as well as helping him deal with the excess magic which is giving Negi a fever). During their plans to rescue Asuna in the Gravekeeper's Palace he bluntly asks Natsumi what good she would be when she offers to stay behind with him and hold off Quintum, despite how upset she is. This also coincides with what he thinks a man should do as well as what someone who made a pactio with her should do, namely to protect her no matter what. Though Kotarou is rough in what he says and does his intentions are truly good.

There was a time where Kotarou thought of himself as a lone wolf who didn't need to rely on anyone to get by, seeing as he originally lived as a mercenary before moving in with Natsumi, Chizuru and Ayaka. Though he likes to think he can care for himself he loves family life and the feeling of knowing that even he has people out there who care for him like a family would, it's one of the things that makes him feel truly happy. If the people he regards as family or close friends are in danger he would gladly put his life on the line to ensure they are kept safe. After hearing Rakan's words about keeping people safe before the ball at the Governor's General, Kotarou considered becoming a magister magi in order to better protect Natsumi and his friends. Eventually he asks Natsumi for a pactio so he can 'better protect his friends and save the world'.

Though he understands what it means to have friends and experience family life, love is a completely foreign concept to Kotarou, at one point even asking if love is something you can eat. Love is not something he thinks about and it takes an awful lot of effort to make him realise love is even being talked about unless it's outright stated. Basically he takes being oblivious up to eleven, rating girls he likes in terms of how strong they are rather than how much he feels about them. Even when Natsumi tells Kotarou she likes him before running off he has difficulty connecting the dots and comes to the conclusion that she said 'I lemon you' rather than 'like'.

Despite his past life as a mercenary, progressing on to being Negi's rival and then becoming a gladiator to earn money to free his enslaved friends in Mundus Magicus, Kotarou is still just a ten year old. He enjoys playing arcade games and taking the time to relax and goof off now and then to visit festivals, hot springs and other locations with his friends. He enjoys his food and seems especially fond of home cooked meals and sandwiches, as well as treats like cotton candy. Though he's knowledgeable when it comes to battles and thinking up strategies Kotarou is not very book-smart and at times needs more complex, real world things explained to him.

Strengths:

A lot of Kotarou's strength comes from him being half human and half dog hanyo. He's able to recover at a much faster rate than most humans and has a heightened sense of smell and hearing as well. He's capable of transforming parts of his body or his whole being into a beastman or a wolf depending on how serious he wants to be and the scales to which he has been pushed. As well as martial arts and brute strength Kotarou is also blindingly fast and agile with his ninja skills being second only to Kaede. He's able to create multiple copies of himself which are unidentifiable from the original, being similar in aura and density. Furthermore he's experienced in using shundo to move around, 'instant movement'. He relies on chi, the 'physical' form of magical energy, for many of his techniques. Kotarou is also experienced in the use of charms (which he keeps in his hair) in combat, being able to use paper charms to cancel out Negi's attacks when they first fought. On top of this Kotarou is also able to walk on water and air by channelling chi and focusing his dog spirits into spinning discs by his ankles.

Kotarou knows a great deal about eastern magic and even has his own forms of heating and cooling spells which he uses to warm up bath water for Asuna when she is going through Evangeline's training. Additionally he knows other basic magic spells like an eavesdropping spells to ensure no one can hear him, Negi and the other Ala Alba members talking. He also knows enough about battle and survival techniques that he offers to teach Negi and Asuna how to use Shundo and Kankaho respectively.

Emotionally, Kotarou's desire to keep everyone safe is what pushes him on. He's not one to cry and get upset if he can help it and he's emotionally driven by his desire to keep his friends safe, save the world and to keep pushing himself harder and further to try and keep up with his best friend and rival Negi Springfield.

Weaknesses:

There is little physically weak about Kotarou. He can become ill and be injured like anyone else though he will recover at a faster rate than a normal human. As mentioned it takes a hell of a lot of damage to bring him down and keep him down.

Kotarou isn't one to over think situations and tends to react on first thoughts rather than giving any proper thought to the situation. Only when the gravity of the situation is hard enough, such as a life and death choice, does he put proper thought and foresight into his actions. He's not very smart when it comes to academics or information he would have to read about to find. At one point Yue 'intellectually browbeat' Kotarou after they started arguing about love and how it makes you stronger with Kotarou becoming increasingly frustrated that he just couldn't smack Yue and win the argument that way because she's a girl. It's easy to tick Kotarou off and his anger can sometimes get the better of his judgement as at one point he rises up to Brigitte's taunts and insults and Chisame needs to point out to him that Brigitte is purposely trying to intimidate him.

Kotarou has always worried about being left behind and not being able to catch up with Negi. In the past he even cried after being unable to meet Negi in the finals of the Mahora Festival tournament. Before his party flees and he starts fighting Quintum, Kotarou wishes he could have trained himself harder in order to be on the same level. He strives to keep up with Negi in his own way, toughening himself up with arena battles to become stronger rather than relying on training to teach him new techniques. His friends are also another weak point, for as much as he cares about and is loyal to them Kotarou tends to throw everything else out the window when it comes to keeping them safe, even his own safety. As mentioned before he ended up hitting Tsukuyomi, a girl, in order to protect Asuna, despite his stance on being against hitting girls. If it means keeping someone he cares about safe he will gladly throw a plan aside and think up a new one if it means making sure everyone gets away with as few injuries as possible.
