Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Traveler | Journey [Character & History]

[personal profile] nihongoing 2012-09-05 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Character

Name: Traveler
Fandom: Journey (PS3)
Gender: N/A
Age: Unknown, 1 Day in Luceti as it will be born new here
Time Period: End of Sunken Temple Level before heading to the mountain
Wing Color: Dark red
History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_%282012_video_game%29 A barebones explanation of the general plot. The traveler wakes in a desert and must journey to a mountain seen far in the distance. Along the way, it learns of the people that came before it, the way the world once was, and how it fell to a sand-covered ruin.

Depicted via hidden murals and in visions seen at the end of each level, the traveler learns that the source of this world’s power came from glowing symbols released from the earth via the mountain. These symbols are the gift of life to all creatures, both animate and not. It created the cloth creatures, the flowers and grasses and then, it created people. The people created a society, harnessing the power of the symbols to create grand cities, but soon became greedy and turned to war. The progenitors of the traveler’s supposed species created great stone dragons powered by trapping the cloth creatures for flight. They took these dragons into battle and destroyed each other, extinguishing their race. The people died and the sand covered their cities, burying them beneath the dunes, leaving only stone markers with their identifying runes etched into it scattered everywhere across the desert.

After traveling through the world and uncovering the truth, the traveler must face the snow-covered mountain and go toward the light at the top. After struggling through increasingly harsh climates, the traveler falls in the snow on the side of the mountain. Another vision of the Elders, huge white figures, restores the traveler’s powers and it flies to the top of the mountain and disappears into the white light that awaits it at the top. The end of the game shows a shooting star coming from the mountain, traversing the areas the traveler journeyed through and eventually lands back at the original site of the traveler’s awakening. The traveler is reborn with a new identifying rune and more markings on its cloak, proving it has made the journey before and it is given the choice to journey again toward the mountain and continue the cycle.

This traveler has been through the world many, many times. It has uncovered all of the glowing symbols and the murals that tell it of the world’s past, and it has obtained the white cloak – a symbol of its experience. It will be taken from its world after experiencing the Sunken Temple, before beginning its mountain ascent.

Traveler | Journey [Personality, Strengths & Weaknesses]

[personal profile] nihongoing 2012-09-05 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: Despite having no dialogue in the game and no concrete history, the traveler’s personality can be understood via the game dynamics itself. The traveler is brave even when alone as seen by the fact that it doesn’t appear to be frightened at waking up in the middle of a desert with no explanation. Instead, the traveler displays innate curiosity about its surroundings and a high level of trust in both inanimate and animate interactive objects. It sees a glowing mountain in the distance and wants to go in that direction because its curiosity drives it to know more. It sees a glittering symbol in the desert and moves toward it, wanting to know what it does. It sees a blank wall and calls to it, causing murals to appear and teach it about the world around it. Much like a child, the traveler isn’t afraid because it hasn’t learned fear, but it has an intimate relationship with curiosity and the thirst for knowledge.

As the traveler moves through its world, it learns more and more about the people that came before, the construction of its world and the nature of its own existence. The traveler doesn’t shirk from this, but moves onward toward the mountain, knowing that its destiny is there in the shining light. It isn’t afraid of what lays ahead, even after it meets the dragons in the underground area and is chased and harmed by them. It knows that hardship awaits it, but it moves forward because that is what it must do. Thus it can be seen that the traveler has both curiosity and a strong sense of duty. Also, the traveler can trek to the mountain more than once – each time reincarnated with its previous knowledge, gaining new stripes and glyphs on its cloak, leading other travelers toward the mountain where their destiny waits.

It is intelligent because it quickly learns that glyphs give it further flight, the ribbon-like creatures recharge its scarf that allows it to fly, and can solve simple puzzles that stand in its way toward its goal. However, the traveler has no written language, nor can it understand “human” speech. It communicates through musical calls and actions. When it is happy, it can chirp, jump, sing loudly, fly, draw pictures in the sand or snow, or run circles around whatever makes it happy. When it is curious, it chirps furiously at whatever it doesn’t understand. When it is frustrated or unhappy, it can trip on its own scarf and fall face first onto the ground, lying there for however long it feels necessary.

More than anything, though, the traveler craves companionship. When the traveler sees another like itself, it wants to be with them. Together the travelers can complete several tasks and, judging by the nature of their powers, they are a cooperative species. Without arms, they rely on the powers granted by the glowing glyphs and the proximity of their travel buddy to help them fly and learn more about their world. When it sees another, it chirps and calls like a song, trying to grab attention and its voice can cause sound ripples that affect the ground around it. When it meets the other person, overjoyed, the traveler often runs circles around its newfound friend, using its voice to power the other traveler’s scarf and keep its travel buddy afloat for longer than the scarf would normally allow.

The traveler doesn’t fight and, without arms, it’s unlikely that the traveler even can fight. It can run or hide from predators like the dragons, but it does not fight. The traveler is essentially pacifistic, curious, and childlike even with its intelligence. It is also reborn after each journey to the mountain, stuck in a cycle of life and rebirth that it does not seem to mind, showing that it has patience and a quiet resolve to continue its journey as long as it takes, as much as it takes, so long as it is needed.

Strengths:
Physical = The traveler is able to fly and fall great distances without injury. It can be hit by stone dragons and, while its scarf is lost (or eaten by the dragon), the traveler itself is able to pick up and carry on after a brief period of lying on the ground. It has no visible mouth and does not appear to need food or drink since there is none available in its world. The traveler subsists on power borrowed from the glowing symbols and the cloth creatures of its world in order to fly, but can run great distances without fatigue if no power is available to it.

Mental/Emotional = It is curious, intelligent, brave and tenacious. Once the traveler has realized its destiny, the traveler doesn’t shirk from it, instead moving through its world toward the glowing mountain lights without remorse. Its curiosity and trusting nature makes it quite personable and it desires company, cultivating a cooperative disposition. (see the personality section for examples)

Weaknesses:
The traveler is unable to speak, limiting its ability to interact efficiently with the other Luceti residents. It will not be able to understand what the other residents say to it because it learns via actions, not words. This will make integration into Luceti society reasonably difficult for the traveler. Also, the traveler, in order to access its ability to fly, needs the glowing symbols and cloth creatures of its world which may not be available in Luceti. It will experience loneliness since it will be the only traveler in Luceti for now and will be unable to follow its destiny, causing confusion for it.

As a side note, the traveler has never seen water either and it is unlikely that it would be able to swim.

Traveler | Journey [Samples]

Samples

First Person: INTROSPECTIVE

I have been here for some time now.

There is no sand. No hot desert sun. No mountain. There is green. It is soft. Soft! It’s so strange. There are things like that flower in the desert, but they do not sing to me like that one did. It is brown here in a different way. It feels strange under my feet. It isn’t like snow. It’s… Springy! Springy and soft and so very strange. I don’t sink into it like sand either. Oh! There is a time of dark and a time of light, too. I’ve only seen the night when passing through the sky.

There are no cloth creatures to help me fly, but there are things on my back like and not like the ones the dragons had at their sides. There are others; strange things not made of cloth, legs growing from near their heads that touch and grab. I want to know more about them, but they do not sing or fly like I do. They don’t seem to understand me when I chirp and call, but! But they make so many different other sounds from holes in their faces! I’ve never heard sounds like them. It is exciting and confusing, joyous and sad all at once. I wish they could sing.

I want to know why they don’t sing, so I will sing to them! Maybe one will learn to sing back and I can teach them to fly. We could fly together! That would be fun. I would like to fly with them. I think they would like to fly, too. Flying is the best! Maybe if we fly together we can find the sand and hot desert sun and the mountain again.

Third Person: It was not the first time the traveler had woken up in a strange place. The first time it woke in the desert, the desert had been strange to it. Now, the desert was comforting. It knew that the desert was the beginning, that the hot sands would give way to snow and the snow to joy. It knew all these things because it had traveled for so long that its cloak had grown white with age.

What was new was the timing. The traveler had not reached the mountain and the joy that awaited it. The traveler had only just seen the final gates open, revealing icy winds and powdery snow, when it awoke in this strange, truly new place. The traveler opened its eyes from the Elder’s vision to see, not snow as it was long accustomed, but something completely unknown.

The long stone walkway and snow had been replaced with something soft, spongy, brown and green. The traveler sat upon this strange carpet and gazed upon it, uncomprehending but curious nonetheless. A new kind of sand?

The traveler stood and chirped at it, but it did not call back. Above, more of the green stretched toward the heavens, different shapes and different shades. The ones above extended from brown columns that didn’t call back when the traveler sang to them either. They were not green cloth creatures captured by the brown columns then. Curious, the traveler thought, peering up at the canopy, looking for a glimpse of floating red. None came and the traveler turned to go when it noticed that its white cloak had become red again with naught but a single gold line and the dark triangles. It was new to this place, completely new.

It hadn’t been new in a long, long time.

Swirling its red novice cloak around its body, the traveler chirped and sang to itself and began to run, reveling in the feeling of strange sponge brown and green not-sand under its pointed feet. If experience had taught it anything, there would be shining symbols to borrow here and then it could fly. Once it could fly, it could begin to understand this new place.

And once it began to understand, it would find the Other and no longer be alone. That, more than anything, pushed the traveler to move. Chirping, the traveler ran, eager to find its Other and begin the Journey.

I tried to flesh it out, although most of it is my interpretation and headcanon. If it is not enough or if you think the headcanon is too much, I can revise again.

===

Revised World History
The history of the world is depicted through hidden murals and in visions seen at the end of each level of the game. The visions are granted by the Elders, remnants of an ancient race, long extinct, but whose technology allows them to grant a vision of memories and pictorial representations of history onto whomever activates statues along the path toward the glowing mountain seen in the distance.

Through these visions and the murals, we learn that the source of the world's life and its powers came from glowing symbols released from the earth via an eruption. These symbols became the gift of life to all creatures, both animate and not. It created birds and the land, fertilized it and gave it life in the form of creatures made of red and gold cloth, flowers and grasses and then, ultimately, white robed people. These people banded together and discovered the cloth creatures and their ability to bestow the power of flight upon those who came in contact with them. The white robed people created a society, harnessing the power of the symbols to create grand cities that spanned the earth surrounding the mountain, the source of all life. They made tall towers, glamorous buildings and even built a transportation system not unlike a train - all powered by the cloth creatures. For a long time, the people flourished, cities springing up and creating various social hubs, but soon the white robed people became greedy, began to covet their neighbors' wealth of cloth power and eventually the land was consumed by war. The progenitors of the traveler's species created great stone dragons powered by trapping the cloth creatures for flight. The stone dragons would consume any cloth they found by using powerful beams of light and the progenitors took these dragons into battle. For years they ravaged the land, breaking down the society they had so carefully built, hundreds died, and eventually the progenitors destroyed each other, extinguishing their race entirely. The white robed people died and the unrelenting sand covered everything. The desert washed over the cities, the plains, the plants and wildlife. It buried the dead far beneath the dunes, leaving only stone markers with their identifying runes etched into it scattered everywhere across the desert. Everywhere the sand tried to erase all evidence of the wayward elder race, leaving only smashed towers and broken dragons, still trapped cloth creatures and the elder race's last hope for a better future.

Before the white robed race died out completely, they left behind markers, glyphs, and statues that contained their memories. They hoped that one day, another race would be born and that they would treat this world and each other with better care than they did. With no way of knowing if their successors would be able to speak their same language, they left pictures and visions behind, knowing that a visual image - a powerful one at that - would serve as a better lesson than any written word could. The Elders died, but their spirits lived on, waiting for the day when someone would come to bring back hope.

Into this now desolate world are born the red cloaked travelers. A single star - a glowing symbol - is born from the mountain itself and is thrown far into the desert just as the mountain had done at the beginning of the world. This symbol becomes a traveler and the traveler, with no knowledge of its world and no concept of the horror that hides in the past, does the only thing it knows how to do - travel toward the mountain. Like birds born with a migratory instinct, they are driven to reach the peak. Travelers are always being born and they are always being sent back to their birthplace, but there can only be two travelers together at one time. More than two and there is a chance that the greed and war can return and the world cannot take that chance. Instead, the mountain waits until the birthplace is clear of travelers before sending new ones. Some travelers rebel against their instincts and try to run the opposite direction, but none get very far and eventually must return to the path and to their instincts, moving forward through the desert, into long buried ruins, and eventually up the mountain itself.

After traveling through the world and uncovering the truth, the traveler must face the snow-covered mountain and go toward the light at the top. The snow, however, freezes the cloth borrowed from the glowing symbols and drains the power attained from the clothe creatures, slowing the traveler’s progress. After struggling through increasingly harsh climates, the traveler falls in the snow on the side of the mountain and apparently dies. However, another more powerful vision of all the Elders, the huge white robed figures that have been giving the traveler its visions as it crossed the dangerous terrain to the mountain, restores the traveler’s powers and it flies to the top, rejoicing among the bountiful amount of power hidden there. Eventually, it disappears into the white light that awaits it at the top and is seen melting into the light itself. The end of the game shows a glowing rune on a stone grave marker dimming out just as a shooting star comes from the mountain, traversing the areas the traveler journeyed through to land back at the original site of the traveler’s awakening. The traveler is reborn with a new identifying rune and more markings on its cloak, proving it has made the journey before and it is given the choice to journey again toward the mountain and continue the cycle. After completing a number of these reincarnation cycles and finding all of the glowing symbols in the world, the traveler earns itself a white cloak akin to that of the Elders’ cloaks, distinguishing itself as a seasoned traveler.

World Creatures
Symbols/Glyphs: Although not technically a creature, the glowing symbols, glyphs and runes are pure power released from the mountain itself. These are the source of all life in the traveler’s world and bestow the power of flight to those who touch them. The more symbols a traveler collects the longer it can stay airborne and the longer its scarf becomes. The power, however, is only borrowed and once the journey is over, the power returns to the symbols at their resting places.

Elders: The Elders is a headcanon name for the large (easily twice or three times as tall as the traveler) white robed progenitor race that appear at the statues and in the visions of the past. A long dead race, the Elders now exist as spirits and memory fragments that guide the travelers toward their ultimate goal of the mountain while educating them of the dangers of their past mistakes. The Elders do not fly as they possess no cloth scarves and they are easily distinguishable by their size and their simple white robes. They possess no visible limbs, their robes go to the floor and the robes do not open in front as the travelers’ robes do.

Travelers: The main characters in this world. The travelers start out as small no-armed figure in a red robe with dark red triangles and gold trim on the hem of their cloak. Their faces are black with white glowing eyes and a gold circlet at their foreheads. The travelers are usually seen in pairs, starting their journey alone before finding a companion along the way, and can absorb and borrow the power of the glowing symbols to lengthen the scarves that power their flight. Flying uses the power stored in the scarves, however, and the traveler must recharge its scarf by touching new symbols, coming into contact with its companion, being bathed in the song of their companion, or coming into contact with the cloth creatures. Each traveler is given a different rune to identify themselves with and the rune changes with each reincarnation. They communicate via chirps and noises like a song or by drawing pictures on the ground. They have no other means of verbal or written communication since they have no arms with which to hold items and their feet end in points with no toes. They fly by flapping their cloaks like wings, using the power stored in the glowing runes on their scarves for propulsion.

Travelers can change the color of their cloaks from red to white (an imitation of the Elders’ cloaks) if they complete certain tasks like finding all the symbols and murals in the world and completing a number of journeys. The white cloak allows the traveler to float for longer and it no longer needs the cloth creatures to recharge its scarf as being in contact with the ground instantly recharges it. White-cloaked travelers are often seen as guides since their color denotes their experience and the higher number of journeys they have been on.

Cloth creatures: Rather than animals, the traveler’s world is populated with red and gold cloth creatures. These can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some being like folded runner carpets, some like rectangular strips, some taking the shape of floating jellyfish or even something that looks like a large whale. The cloth creatures have some measure of intelligence – they are aware of danger and can move of their own accord – but they are more akin to simple animals in our world. These creatures can be used to power up the traveler’s scarf as they are drawn to the traveler’s when they shout or chirp loudly and the sound wave touches them.

Some cloth found in the world can be used as bridges, others as flags that disappear to open up chambers or release smaller creatures when the traveler activates them with their proximity or their songs.

Plants: Again, plants are made of cloth in this world. They appear like seaweed, growing up toward sunlight or like grasses growing out of the ground.

There is only one instance of a recognizably Earthian plant: a single flower found hidden in the desert. If the traveler chirps or calls to the flower, it responds with a ping of its own, but cannot call of its own accord.

Dragons: The great stone dragons created by the Elders for the purpose of consuming and destroying enemy scarves and captured cloth creatures in order to reduce their powers. The dragons are still in operation even after the Elders themselves have disappeared, although many lie dormant, awakened by the traveler’s proximity in the Underground City. They are powered by trapping cloth creatures for flight and are technologically advanced enough that they do not require a driver in order to operate. They search for cloth creatures with a large beam of light projected from a bulb where their face should be and when the light finds something, it tracks and attacks its prey, chomping off part or all of the cloth and destroying it.

Others: Although there are not many other creatures in the sand world other than those listed above, there is one creature that doesn’t seem to fit like the others. In the Sunken Temple, once the traveler fills the Temple with a water-like light composed of the power of the symbols, a glowing creature can be found at the bottom of the central column, swimming through the symbol-water. Those who played FLoW recognize it as the primordial creature from that game, which lengthens its life by eating glowing particles and using the power of the particles to grow a bigger body. This creature can also react when the traveler’s sound waves hit it, calling back in much the same manner.

Character History (character thoughts and feelings are headcanon)
The first time this traveler woke in the desert, it was confused. It knew instinctively to travel toward the largest dune in the area, only because surrounding it was sand and on the dune were two stone markers with scarves flapping in the wind. It was curiosity that pulled the traveler forward and once it reached the dune, it saw the mountain in the distance. At first, the traveler went this way and that, trying to explore its new world as much as possible before moving toward the mountain, but the strong winds on either side prevented it from getting too far.

Its first companion was another red cloak like itself. They traveled through the world together as much as possible, but became separated in the desert, leaving the traveler alone. Uncertain about what to do, the traveler wandered looking for a new companion and came upon one – this time in a white cloak. Overjoyed at the appearance of a new friend, the traveler shoved aside its confusion over the difference in color in its new friend’s cloak. Together they traveled until the end, the white cloak leading the traveler across the world, teaching it safer methods of travel and helping it find the glowing symbols to lengthen its scarf. The first time it encountered the world, it was with awe and curiosity, inspired by the mysterious Elders and touched by the kindness of its white-cloaked companion, the traveler pushed forward even as the snow and cold overtook it on the mountain.

The first time the traveler almost died on the mountainside, it was afraid and saddened. It worried for its white-cloaked companion and heartbroken that it had come so close to the end, only to fail to reach its goal. It was sad that it hadn’t been able to accomplish what it was meant to do and would not see what awaited it at the top. When the Elders came to its rescue and helped it fly to the top, the traveler waited until its companion appeared and followed it, heart swelling and overjoyed at the sights in the sanctuary at the top. Together, the two travelers passed into the light and then it was reborn into the sand with a new set of symbols of its cloak.

Since that first experience, the traveler has been through the world many, many times. It has traveled with dozens of different companions, sometimes losing them in the sand, sometimes helping guide them through the trials, sometimes even getting lost despite its experience, but it has never lost that sense of wonder and joy it felt upon reaching the sanctuary for the first time. The traveler yearns to return to that place, wanting to take others with it, and sometimes lingers at the apex so long that its companion will often go on without it. It has uncovered all of the glowing symbols and the murals that tell it of the world’s past, and it has obtained the white cloak – a symbol of its experience. Now, it leads red cloaks to the mountaintop along the same route that it was once shown so long ago, sometimes sacrificing itself to the dragons should its red cloaked companion accidently trigger a reaction. It has learned to draw simple pictures – a cartoon heart to indicate it likes something or someone and a flower to mimic the one it saw in the desert. It can no longer remember how many times it has traveled to the mountain, nor does it know how many more times it must go to it, but it doesn’t much care. So long as it is traveling and it can experience the sanctuary’s joy at the top, it will travel as far and as long as necessary.

The traveler will be taken from its world after experiencing the Sunken Temple, before beginning its mountain ascent at the latest of its travels. It was alone at that time and a white cloak, traveling simply for the joy of the journey.
