Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

FANDOM CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our fandom applications.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Yuri also has a habit of looking at the practicality of something over how fun or pleasant it is. For example, in a skit, Estelle tells Yuri how excited she is about seeing Halure's tree in full bloom, saying "All those petals, dancing in the breeze ... It'd be like a dream!". Yuri's response? "I wonder how they deal with all their houses getting buried in flowers every year." Estelle comments on the beauty of a waterfall, Yuri says how useful it is to have a fresh water source nearby. Estelle calls a capsule toy a "figurine", Yuri bluntly says it's a toy. Stuff like that. That's not to say he doesn't enjoy or appreciate anything -- he does later comment on Halure's flowers looking nicer than he thought -- but he sees practicality first and foremost before seeing much of anything else. He's also a little dense and can sometimes come to the wrong conclusions or let things go over his head (an example of the first -- during a skit about the Lord of the Plains, Estelle (who has mistaken it for a person and not the monster it actually is) talks about how amazing said 'Lord' must be. Yuri pipes in with "I don't know ... 'He' could be a 'she'.", thus missing the entire point of Estelle's mistake. An example of the second part -- in another skit, the party is talking about their horrible luck when Estelle says that "the winds of luck are little by little turning in our favor". Yuri completely lets the point of that statement go over his head, coming out with "Exactly. Luck just flies by, too ... like the wind!"). Normally, he's pretty clever, and can figure things out with little evidence to go by (like how he figured out Khroma was an Entelexeia from ... one line she said in passing at the castle and somehow didn't see the whole Raven Incident coming until it was too late, but that's something else), but he's no Sherlock Holmes, and certainly not a genius.

Another major quirk of Yuri's that's only known via skits -- he has no sense of direction. Even in places he's been to before, Yuri will still manage to lose his way somehow. An example for that -- In the beginning of the game, before you even leave the castle with Estelle, a skit comes up where Estelle confirms with Yuri that he really was a knight in the past. After Yuri confirms it, she says "... Well, it's just ... you don't seem to know your way around the castle well ..." (and then asks if he's an impostor, but fff). In the Quoi Woods, a skit is shown where they're apparently so lost, Estelle starts to think that that's the so called "curse" of the forest. So, basically, without a map? Yuri is not someone you send out alone to navigate confusing terrain. With a map? Yuri is still not someone you send out alone to navigate confusing terrain.

On top of that, he loves sweets. All that sugar in his system is probably why he has so much energy, but at least he works it off with no problem. He also seems to have a little fetish for cat-ears, but don't expect him to say a word about it unless it's brought up, and even then, he'll skim right over it. Also, this might be a baseless observation, but he seems to treat animals with more respect than he does the average person. At least he does that with Repede. Hell, he just might like dogs, who knows? There's also that story about how Repede became the big boss of all the animals in Zaphias, but we'll never know that full story because Karol and Estelle said "Yuri, shut up, you're starting to sound like a lunatic" as nicely as humanly possible, so he summed it up instead. That alone might make it pretty clear that Yuri likes dealing with animals more than people, or at least is good with them. Although, whether that's true or not, the guy still hangs around a lot of people and is one hell of a chatterbox. Most of what he says is snark-fest material, but the guy just loves to run his mouth. He doesn't go on and on if he can avoid it, but if he has to talk a lot, he'll do it.

... So, to sum everything I said in the shortest way possible, Yuri is pretty much a dorky sort-of-kind-of "male tsundere" big brother-type with a massive hero complex and a penchant for being extremely reckless. What a guy, eh?

Strengths:

Physical; With all the sword training, exercising, and ridiculous stunts he pulls in the game, Yuri is very physically fit, even if he still has a bit of a lanky appearance. He's the sort of guy who exercises less because he needs it, and more because he genuinely enjoys it. He's fully capable of defending himself against nearly anyone (provided they are not physically powerful beyond measure, not that that'll stop him from trying anyway), even while unarmed -- some of his artes, and even normal attacks, have punches mixed in -- leaving him as a sort of swordsman who will attempt to knock your teeth out if he finds that it'll be faster than using a weapon. He also uses a bodhi blastia when he fights, which improves his ability to fight, allows him to use artes (special skills/techniques for battle), and strengthens him considerably -- which is probably why he can (and does) pull off the stunts he can, even though he doesn't seem like he could.

In short, the guy's a fightin' machine who'd keep on keeping on, even after he's gotten the nuts and bolts kicked out of him. After all, "battle scars are the mark of a true man", according to him. He'd probably be happy to get knocked around a little with that kind of attitude.

Mental; Yuri is very street-smart, and a bit of a genius in terms of battle techniques. He's capable of picking up on things that are -- or at least, should be -- very difficult to figure out when it comes to someone outside of his group (Khroma's true identity), and can put together basic plans and ideas on the spot (such as when he came up with the "laws" Brave Vesperia should go by right after the guild was officially made). He also knows how to lie his way in and out of whatever he needs to, providing he doesn't get caught beforehand (and even then, he'd still try to if he needs to), and is very quick to notice things about people that aren't too noticeable to others ... or perhaps he's just a bit judgmental.

As far as his "battle genius" goes, he's shown time and time again that he can learn a powerful, difficult, and unique technique by simply watching it once, or even reading a little bit about it -- he learned how to use a Fatal Strike by just watching Clint do it once, and learned how to use Tiger Blade after simply skimming a book on it and guessing (and, according to the person who let him see the book, did it perfectly on his first try). As much as he tries to say it isn't something he has a particular interest in, it seems like one of the few things Yuri can manage to retain knowledge on is fighting and arte techniques.

Emotional; Throughout the entirety of Tales of Vesperia, Yuri is never shown breaking down, emotionally cracking, or being openly depressed -- or really that depressed at all, for that matter. Whatever the situation, he doesn't let anything stop him or slow him down for any reason whatsoever. What happens happens, and what needs to be done needs to be done. He's not some stone-cold emotionless thing -- he gets pretty angry, sometimes rather quick on top of that -- but he also refuses to let anything get him down to the point of inactivity. Sometimes, during some of the darker points in the story, he'll even appear to be in a rather bright mood (as shown when you come across Duke while Estelle is kidnapped and waiting in Zaphias).

In general, he seems to be hard to really shove in any direction, in terms of emotional output.

Weaknesses:

Physical; Though stronger than the average guy, especially with his bodhi blastia, Yuri is still human and still prone to physical injury, as Sodia so helpfully demonstrated at the top of Zaude when she stabbed him. He seems to do well enough with holding in whatever pain he may be in (as shown when he quite literally cuts his arm with his sword to get Estelle's attention after Belius dies, and when Estelle tackles him on the stairs after aforementioned stabbing), but he certainly isn't immune to it. It's also fully possible for anyone stronger than him to do some serious damage, regardless of how determined he can be to win when it comes to fighting.

Mental; As both an orphan and a resident of the poorest section of Zaphias (and possibly Terca Lumereis as a whole), Yuri had next to no education whatsoever. This is something he openly admits during the Giganto sidequest, when he's asked about one of the previous kings of Zaphias -- something that is apparently common knowledge even amongst school children -- and responds that he doesn't know much, if anything, about him. He also knows little about the world outside of Zaphias, having to learn from the rest of the group in order to understand certain things that were happening around him.

He also doesn't seem to really like things that require extensive thinking, or any kind of intellectual thinking at all -- books, studying, maps, detailed solutions to difficult problems -- which is part of why he doesn't have any magic artes, even though anyone with a bodhi blastia can learn them. He is also cited as seeming too impatient to "sit still and look at something for too long", which probably doesn't help matters.

Emotional; Even though he seems emotionally sound, Yuri's attitude toward emotions is actually incredibly reserved and almost entirely blocked off. When he seems to be in a good mood after something horrible has happened, it's because he's trying to make sure no one worries about him, and bring up everyone else's mood. He's gotten a little better about it, as he eventually allows himself to look openly upset in front of the group at one point, but generally if something's bothering Yuri, only someone who knows him and his tendencies well will ever pick up on it, as he usually chooses to simply lock the problem up inside of himself and either "solve" it or ignore it until it's brought to light (which is what he did after the two murders he committed, until Flynn confronted him about it).

He isn't secretly some sort of delicate butterfly, but he is very, very closed off. As a few examples from skits: "It's like you have genuine emotions, but your pride won't let you show them." and "You're concerned for them, aren't you? That's nothing to be ashamed of." In general, Yuri is simply too prideful to make himself look like anything but some wall that can never show anything that make may him look "weak" to anyone.
