Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Personality:

Like most Tales of heroes, Yuri Lowell is the sort of character who seems basic enough on the outside, but is actually quite complex under the surface. At first glance, he just seems like some cold, uncaring, mouthy guy with a high tendency for recklessness. That first glance isn't completely far off, though -- Yuri can be rather cold, can make some very uncaring comments, and he certainly does like to run his mouth. Really, he doesn't sound like the "hero" type of person at all.

Surprisingly enough, he actually is.

Before going into that, let's touch on the basics, first. Yuri's basic personality can be summed up in five words: teasing, sarcastic, cold, cynical, liar (and also a positive thinker when it comes to The Situation At Hand and making everyone around him feel better only -- past that, no). It's the side of him he shows more often than not, preferring to tease, lie, make snarky comments, or just be cold in general to get himself out of situations he'd rather not be in or face at the moment. If he notices a weakness in someone, he will exploit it for his own personal fun (like he did to Karol after they defeated an Eggbear). Thankfully, he won't laugh in your face for it, but if he teases you enough and you're giving reactions he's hoping for, he just might. He knows when to stop, though, and isn't one to push his luck when it comes to teasing people he actually likes being around. The man also lies more than an area rug, doing so many times in his canon to get information without others interfering, to cover up something he did, or just to get away from everyone and do something on his own. If he gets caught up in his lies, he won't back down and admit it all, either -- he'll just switch gears, as if he never lied in the first place, and never address the lie again. His cynical attitude is one that doesn't get brought out too often, as he's usually just an easy-going guy. For the most part, he's cynical about situations he's absolutely frustrated with. In the canon itself, most of his cynical commentary stems from any mention of the government, which he's extremely frustrated with. So, if there's lots of things piling up all at once that's not being taken care of, and Mr. Lowell can't handle it himself and knows this, he's going to be damn cynical about the whole deal. And if the guy just met you and sees no reason to be friendly or treat you with respect, he can easily come off as cold and apathetic.

Deep down, however, Yuri has that "protective older brother" personality. Aside from all the teasing, snarking, and lying he'll do, if he likes you, you'll know it. He'll protect you if he's near and the situation calls for it, check in on you when he's able, and offer help when he feels you might need it. If he really cares, then he'll be a little harsh at times as well, making blunt statements about your actions and seemingly getting upset. Really, he's not angry -- he's just worried, and he's not one to express that very well. Sometimes he'll flat out say "You had me worried", but his words and his actions tend to be different. Usually, if he's worried enough to say that he's worried, you probably scared the shit out of him. Even when it seems he doesn't care much about something that's going on, he's got it on his mind in some form or another.

There's one part of Yuri's lying side that eventually becomes obvious, when someone gets to know him long enough and sees it enough times: If something bad happens and he seems alright the next day, more than likely smiling away or snarking out of nowhere with a grin, then that's a huge red flag that whatever just happened is seriously bothering him. Yuri seems to hate attention drawn to him in the form of praise or worry, so he'll shrug off any praise and decline being rewarded for good actions he's done, and he'll smile away and joke around to ward off any worries people might have for him. The only praise he'll really take is praise or rewards for his fighting skills. Sadly, he doesn't make his "pretending to be happy" side glaringly obvious by flat out saying "No one worry, I'm totally okay" or anything like that. He'll just stay quiet or talk normally, and if anyone says "Oh, are you all right?" he'll put up a lie immediately and try to cut things short to get away. While Yuri does have the cold aspect going on for him often, he's really very easy-going (and even gives off the slacker vibe at times) if he's got no reason to be cold/knows you well enough. This is a bit tough to see in the main game without looking at skits, but Yuri is actually a very encouraging, "be happy about this/it could be worse" kind of guy about a lot of things ... well, not things that involve more serious aspects of life, like a town's people being tortured or a crappy government or something. He's not some kind of cheerleader, but he will come out with encouragement when it's necessary, and a "be happy!" when he feels it's needed.

As mentioned earlier, on most normal occasions, Yuri has a tendency to be cold and almost dismissive with people if he's in the middle of something or isn't getting a good first impression of them/thinks talking to them is a waste of time. The cold attitude can also come up when he's explaining things, stating his opinion (if it's about a serious topic), or when the group (or just one person in it) is doing something silly or says something stupid. "Don't be stupid." "I'm not getting involved in that." "We have other things we need to be doing." So on. It's doubtful he does that to be nasty or make everyone look stupid, but more to make them think a little more before talking, or to stay focused. ... Or he's just blunt, which is much more likely the case. This is Mr. "I will say what I want, when I want, however I want" Lowell, after all. Most of what he says can come across as cold or otherwise uninterested, even around friends, but that's just the way he talks. He's only warm and actually friendly when he's in a good mood, or when he's talking one on one with someone (this is usually reserved to someone he cares about, though). However, Yuri's not perfect and can get distracted from the Goal of the Day sometimes, but as long as some voice of reason clues him into that, he'll get back on track quickly.

Getting back to what I said about Yuri and how "obvious" he makes it when something's bothering him. In general, Yuri is what could be called "a non-expressive brick", particularly from the beginning of the game up to the point of Estelle's capture. If he's upset, depressed, angry, happy -- he barely shows it. Early-Game!Yuri's "happiness" came off more like amusement, anger came off as silent aggravation, and forget "upset" and "depressed" -- that wasn't even shown, not around everyone else. For example -- it takes Estelle from the first visit to Capua Nor to the first mention of Yuri and Karol creating a guild (in part 2/3 of the game, that is) to figure out that something Flynn said to Yuri back during that first visit to Nor had upset him. Even then, Yuri flat out denies it, saying "Nothing that guy says could get to me" while wandering off somewhere. Judith says "He doesn't like to admit his feelings, does he?", which just ... well, rubs the evidence of Yuri being a brick about his feelings in your face. The game definitely makes sure you realize how locked in Yuri is, that's for certain.

Regardless, by time Estelle was captured and all the problems with Alexei started popping up (basically, mid part 2), Yuri was finally starting to express himself more, instead of just wandering away or glaring at everyone who tried to get him to open up. It's noted by both Rita and Judith in Halure during a skit, when Yuri is letting himself look openly upset in the presence of the group. As Judith says, "The fact that he acts like this knowing the tension it causes is a sign that he's softened. The old Yuri would never have let us see that he was upset about something." He still tries to hide things (and fails at it, since the group knows him too well for it to work anymore), but for the most part, he's a little more openly emotional in the group's presence. There are things he still hides, though. After executing the Don, a skit with Yuri talking to himself is shown that makes it clear doing that -- even though he marched forward and volunteered to be the one to do so -- had greatly bothered him, due to the amount of respect he had for the Don. He barely showed that it bothered him, and instead tried to focus on getting Karol to have faith in himself to keep the guild going. When that didn't work, he focused on Mt. Temza and finding Judith instead. That seems to be the norm for Yuri -- if something is hurting or bothering him, aside from the sometimes overly cheerful act he pulls, he'll focus on one thing as doggedly as he possibly can before going to something else and focusing on that. Most likely his way of coping. As another note, when a decision he's made is bothering him, he skims over it or flat out says he doesn't want to talk about it. For example, when Raven asks Yuri what he plans to do about Estelle (back when they're on their way to Zaphias), Yuri flat out says "... I'm not sure I won't lose my nerve if I start talking about it now. You're just gonna have to bear with me 'til the time comes." Even when Raven guesses correctly as to what he's planning, Yuri only says "... That about sums it up." instead of getting into it. Conversations that bother him are ones he tries to be short, vague, or evasive about. Or he just tries to change the subject. It depends on whether there's an opening for it or not.

As a smaller note, when Yuri sees that a conversation is bothering someone else who'd rather not get into what's being said, he sometimes butts in and leads the conversation down another road to take some heat off of the person. For one example, Rita asks Estelle why she mentioned the castle at one point. Yuri randomly butts in with "Yeah, I was in the castle a while back. I used to be a knight." and completely derails everything to get Estelle off the hook. He does the same thing for Karol a few times, and Judith as well.

In general, Yuri is not the type to "toot his own horn". He'll talk about himself sometimes, but it's only little snippets. He doesn't mind saying that he's poor and technically homeless. He doesn't mind saying that he was once a knight. But he will damn near never bring up his personal achievements. He hates it for some strange reason, possibly due to embarrassment or maybe even because he sees no reason to be praised for what he's done. He's likely been this way his entire life, seeing as how Flynn got to a point where he couldn't stand Yuri's "I refuse to take credit for the good I've done" attitude any longer and had a one-on-one duel with him to vent. He doesn't mind talking about other people and the good they've done, though. It's possibly a way to distract others from wanting to know about what he's done and let them marvel at others so he can keep to the background. He'll especially talk about Flynn's achievements, Estelle, Karol, and Judith's personal (and physical) strength, Rita's genius, and even Raven's general wisdom (and don't get him started on Repede; he lives to gush about his dog) -- but himself? You're better off asking someone else.

Even though he seems to take charge and has an almost "I'm in control here" stance, Yuri is pretty much a "lone wolf", so to speak. He doesn't like having the actual title of a leader, even if he does tend to be one just based on his go-getter ways alone. In a way, he's the guy who's in charge who doesn't like being reminded that he is indeed in charge.

The reason why he lies so much in order to get away from people for a while is to do things on his own that he feels he'd be best doing alone, or in order to carry burdens he feels others don't need to bother with. He's a bit less likely to do anything extreme on his own like he used to, due to the party giving him a beat-down and a talking to for trying to run off without them in an attempt to find Estelle alone, but it still can and probably will happen. It's an ingrained part of his personality, and not one he'll let go of very easily. Thankfully, even though he'll still probably do his "running off into the night to do things on his own" an-hero-actions, he'll be more willing to work with others now. Had be been taken before the Rescuing Estelle scenario, he'd be very reluctant to share his burden or rely on friends/allies to help him.

As much as Yuri doesn't seem to care about things that go on around him, the man is extremely empathic, willing to help you even if you just made eye contact for the first time about five seconds ago (Evidence of this? When you find out that the only way to gain entrance to Ragou's manor is to bring the horn of a Rhygbaroh, you also find out that tax collectors took the child of some random couple you've never met since they didn't pay their taxes in time. Yuri stops the father from leaving town to get the horn since he's injured as hell, and then proceeds to go with the party and retrieve it. When everyone gets all "now we can see Ragou", Yuri hands the horn over to the couple instead so they can pay off their debts, saying his group will find another way to get in to Ragou's manor. Yuri doesn't confirm or deny it, but the party suspects aloud that Yuri planned to hand it over to the couple the entire time.). He'd much rather leave the huge, difficult to solve problems to those who can handle it while he solves the smaller, doable problems. Anything ranging from "I hit things and make the bad peoples fall down" to retrieving stolen items and the like. Mostly on his own, on top of that. If he feels he can handle it and he's able to do something before someone else jumps on the chance, Yuri will be there, doing everything he can.

Getting Yuri genuinely angry is actually very difficult to do. Frustrated, yeah that's easy, but angry-angry? Not so much. Threatening the lives of his friends or being a threatening force to innocent people in general instantly puts you on his bad side, and getting him to trust someone who does that would be nothing short of a miracle. All in all, it's really not worth getting Yuri angry with you, as it doesn't get you anywhere and only gives him a reason to annoy you or get in your way. However, if you kill or torture innocents, or god help you, kill one of his friends, then you're really screwed. Yuri is not a forgiving person if he has grown to truly hate you. If he thinks you should be "put down", he'll step forward and do it himself without hesitation. Still, Yuri isn't some psycho killer or mass murderer, either. He'll only go to the lengths of taking a life if he believes it's the only way for things to get better.

Watching his words around "important people" or nobility isn't something Yuri will do, especially if he doesn't think you deserve his respect. He'll talk to you any way he wants, and if you don't like it, he doesn't give a damn. Pointing a weapon in his face or being an epic fire-breathing monster won't shut him up either. If he's got a point to get across, he'll get it out there if it's the last thing he does. In many cases, it nearly was the last thing he did, but his words managed to get across before things got ugly for him. Speaking of nobility, he spent his life hating them for treating the people of the lower quarter of Zaphias, and the less fortunate/commoners in general, like trash. Thankfully, due to nobles such as Estelle and Ioder (even if he's very hard on Ioder in the game, but all things considered, I think he's just acting that way due to 1) bitterness from the people of the lower quarter not being escorted out of Zaphias during the 'Estelle Incident', and 2) because he wants the kid to know what kind of opposition he'll face when he DOES become king, but those are just guesses so!), he'll give some nobles a chance, just in case they aren't complete assholes. However, if he sees that you're just like the snobby, selfish bastards he's always hated, don't expect him to give you the time of day.

Being snarky and Big Brother-like isn't the only thing Yuri's got going for him, either. When things get serious, he'll cut out the snark and sarcasm if it's not called for and be serious about a situation. He's also very curious about a lot of things, so if he doesn't know what something is and he wants to know, he'll ask. He's not too shy about admitting that he didn't get much of an education growing up, either. He won't go into some Woe Is Me tl;dr speech about it, but coming out with a "Sorry, I didn't have much of an education. So, what are you talking about?" isn't shocking for him. If he doesn't know something, he'll admit it, ask for the information needed to understand the conversation, and move on. Even without an actual education, Yuri is still pretty street-smart and can hold his own in a conversation without looking stupid, even if he doesn't fully understand what's going on. After all, if he makes a mistake, he'll be corrected and just learn from that. See? All works out in the end.

Being hypocritical is another one of Yuri's traits, but it's one he doesn't seem to care about in the least. If he says one thing then proceeds to argue with someone who says the same thing (but in regards to someone or something he cares about), he could care less if he said the same damn thing only 5 minutes ago -- he'll immediately argue against it. The biggest example here is when Yuri said something along the lines of having to "cut off a limb before it infects the whole", which was in reference to Judith betraying the guild and breaking its laws. Basically, it was meant to be something along the lines of "We have to punish her for what she did, even if she's our friend", but Mr Lowell left it as vague and open, more than likely to show that he was serious about that line of thinking. However, when Phaeroh said the same thing about Estelle (except by "cut off" he meant "kill" not "punish"), he immediately went off at Phaeroh, saying things like "Who are you to judge who should live or die". Doubly hypocritical there, given Yuri ... kinda did some judging like that of himself. But again. His statement was left open, as by that he meant "Guys he killed = bad guys, Estelle = innocent, therefore Phaeroh is wrong and must be argued against".

Tl;dr, Yuri tends to say things then do or say the opposite, making himself look like a hypocrite because he's so damn vague about what he says most times. Or in some cases, he just does hypocritical things and doesn't give a damn.

Recklessness. Yuri is extremely reckless, especially when it comes to protecting someone. He's run right in front of a blast from a hoplon blastia (think the equivalent of a canon that shoots out massive balls of energy instead of canon balls) and blocked it with his sword, just so Estelle wouldn't have to use her power to negate it (and ended up getting knocked back several feet, as well as making party members wonder if he had a deathwish), as well as run in front of stream of fire being shot out by a dragon in order to block the flames with his sword. He's also slashed his own arm in an attempt to get Estelle to come to her senses, which indeed worked because of how extreme it was. There are other examples, such as him going back to pick up a doll some kid dropped while a large group of monsters were charging at him and the gate between them and safety was slowly closing, as well as heading inside the cabin of a burning, sinking ship to save some unknown person stuck inside, but all they do is reiterate the same point -- Yuri is ridiculously reckless.

Yuri also has a tendency to solve problems in a "simple" manner. Tax collector coming to your door, demanding tax money? Get rid of the tax collector! Being shot at from afar? Stop whatever's shooting at you! Blastia causing world problems? Get rid of the blastia! To him, almost every problem out there has a very simple solution -- whether it's the best one out there doesn't seem to be as important as how quick or efficient it is. As someone who "hates waiting", Yuri likes to get something done as quickly as possible, especially if there isn't much time to wait around (for example, when the group needed to head to Myorzo -- after finding the Krityan researcher and finding out how to get there, the group suggests resting for a moment. Yuri starts to protest it ("But ...") before the "we're resting for now" decision is made). As stated in an earlier paragraph, if it's a more complicated issue, he'll leave it up to someone else, but if he thinks a complex problem has a simple solution (like the example with the blastia causing problems), he'll go with it.

As one other side note, Yuri seems to have a tendency to talk to himself, whether alone or with others around him -- or at the very least, he does a lot of "thinking aloud". This is probably more "he is a JRPG protagonist" than any really important character trait, however.

Yuri does have his quirks as well. He's a very active, go-getter type, having ridiculous exercise routines (4 mile run, followed by 100 push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, according to a skit) that he sees no problems with. If he likes being around you and has too much energy then you might be in trouble, as he just may drag you off to exercise with him if you don't get away in time. He loves fighting, too. He's not the type to start random fights or cause them just to entertain himself, but if he has no other choice, he won't complain. He absolutely loves the coliseum as well, which is pretty clear every time you enter Yuri into one of the tournaments in the game (He goes from forming words to, by time the 100-man melee is available, just letting out random yells).

Yuri also has a habit of looking at the practicality of something over how fun or pleasant it is. For example, in a skit, Estelle tells Yuri how excited she is about seeing Halure's tree in full bloom, saying "All those petals, dancing in the breeze ... It'd be like a dream!". Yuri's response? "I wonder how they deal with all their houses getting buried in flowers every year." Estelle comments on the beauty of a waterfall, Yuri says how useful it is to have a fresh water source nearby. Estelle calls a capsule toy a "figurine", Yuri bluntly says it's a toy. Stuff like that. That's not to say he doesn't enjoy or appreciate anything -- he does later comment on Halure's flowers looking nicer than he thought -- but he sees practicality first and foremost before seeing much of anything else. He's also a little dense and can sometimes come to the wrong conclusions or let things go over his head (an example of the first -- during a skit about the Lord of the Plains, Estelle (who has mistaken it for a person and not the monster it actually is) talks about how amazing said 'Lord' must be. Yuri pipes in with "I don't know ... 'He' could be a 'she'.", thus missing the entire point of Estelle's mistake. An example of the second part -- in another skit, the party is talking about their horrible luck when Estelle says that "the winds of luck are little by little turning in our favor". Yuri completely lets the point of that statement go over his head, coming out with "Exactly. Luck just flies by, too ... like the wind!"). Normally, he's pretty clever, and can figure things out with little evidence to go by (like how he figured out Khroma was an Entelexeia from ... one line she said in passing at the castle and somehow didn't see the whole Raven Incident coming until it was too late, but that's something else), but he's no Sherlock Holmes, and certainly not a genius.

Another major quirk of Yuri's that's only known via skits -- he has no sense of direction. Even in places he's been to before, Yuri will still manage to lose his way somehow. An example for that -- In the beginning of the game, before you even leave the castle with Estelle, a skit comes up where Estelle confirms with Yuri that he really was a knight in the past. After Yuri confirms it, she says "... Well, it's just ... you don't seem to know your way around the castle well ..." (and then asks if he's an impostor, but fff). In the Quoi Woods, a skit is shown where they're apparently so lost, Estelle starts to think that that's the so called "curse" of the forest. So, basically, without a map? Yuri is not someone you send out alone to navigate confusing terrain. With a map? Yuri is still not someone you send out alone to navigate confusing terrain.

On top of that, he loves sweets. All that sugar in his system is probably why he has so much energy, but at least he works it off with no problem. He also seems to have a little fetish for cat-ears, but don't expect him to say a word about it unless it's brought up, and even then, he'll skim right over it. Also, this might be a baseless observation, but he seems to treat animals with more respect than he does the average person. At least he does that with Repede. Hell, he just might like dogs, who knows? There's also that story about how Repede became the big boss of all the animals in Zaphias, but we'll never know that full story because Karol and Estelle said "Yuri, shut up, you're starting to sound like a lunatic" as nicely as humanly possible, so he summed it up instead. That alone might make it pretty clear that Yuri likes dealing with animals more than people, or at least is good with them. Although, whether that's true or not, the guy still hangs around a lot of people and is one hell of a chatterbox. Most of what he says is snark-fest material, but the guy just loves to run his mouth. He doesn't go on and on if he can avoid it, but if he has to talk a lot, he'll do it.

... So, to sum everything I said in the shortest way possible, Yuri is pretty much a dorky sort-of-kind-of "male tsundere" big brother-type with a massive hero complex and a penchant for being extremely reckless. What a guy, eh?

Strengths:

Physical; With all the sword training, exercising, and ridiculous stunts he pulls in the game, Yuri is very physically fit, even if he still has a bit of a lanky appearance. He's the sort of guy who exercises less because he needs it, and more because he genuinely enjoys it. He's fully capable of defending himself against nearly anyone (provided they are not physically powerful beyond measure, not that that'll stop him from trying anyway), even while unarmed -- some of his artes, and even normal attacks, have punches mixed in -- leaving him as a sort of swordsman who will attempt to knock your teeth out if he finds that it'll be faster than using a weapon. He also uses a bodhi blastia when he fights, which improves his ability to fight, allows him to use artes (special skills/techniques for battle), and strengthens him considerably -- which is probably why he can (and does) pull off the stunts he can, even though he doesn't seem like he could.

In short, the guy's a fightin' machine who'd keep on keeping on, even after he's gotten the nuts and bolts kicked out of him. After all, "battle scars are the mark of a true man", according to him. He'd probably be happy to get knocked around a little with that kind of attitude.

Mental; Yuri is very street-smart, and a bit of a genius in terms of battle techniques. He's capable of picking up on things that are -- or at least, should be -- very difficult to figure out when it comes to someone outside of his group (Khroma's true identity), and can put together basic plans and ideas on the spot (such as when he came up with the "laws" Brave Vesperia should go by right after the guild was officially made). He also knows how to lie his way in and out of whatever he needs to, providing he doesn't get caught beforehand (and even then, he'd still try to if he needs to), and is very quick to notice things about people that aren't too noticeable to others ... or perhaps he's just a bit judgmental.

As far as his "battle genius" goes, he's shown time and time again that he can learn a powerful, difficult, and unique technique by simply watching it once, or even reading a little bit about it -- he learned how to use a Fatal Strike by just watching Clint do it once, and learned how to use Tiger Blade after simply skimming a book on it and guessing (and, according to the person who let him see the book, did it perfectly on his first try). As much as he tries to say it isn't something he has a particular interest in, it seems like one of the few things Yuri can manage to retain knowledge on is fighting and arte techniques.

Emotional; Throughout the entirety of Tales of Vesperia, Yuri is never shown breaking down, emotionally cracking, or being openly depressed -- or really that depressed at all, for that matter. Whatever the situation, he doesn't let anything stop him or slow him down for any reason whatsoever. What happens happens, and what needs to be done needs to be done. He's not some stone-cold emotionless thing -- he gets pretty angry, sometimes rather quick on top of that -- but he also refuses to let anything get him down to the point of inactivity. Sometimes, during some of the darker points in the story, he'll even appear to be in a rather bright mood (as shown when you come across Duke while Estelle is kidnapped and waiting in Zaphias).

In general, he seems to be hard to really shove in any direction, in terms of emotional output.

Weaknesses:

Physical; Though stronger than the average guy, especially with his bodhi blastia, Yuri is still human and still prone to physical injury, as Sodia so helpfully demonstrated at the top of Zaude when she stabbed him. He seems to do well enough with holding in whatever pain he may be in (as shown when he quite literally cuts his arm with his sword to get Estelle's attention after Belius dies, and when Estelle tackles him on the stairs after aforementioned stabbing), but he certainly isn't immune to it. It's also fully possible for anyone stronger than him to do some serious damage, regardless of how determined he can be to win when it comes to fighting.

Mental; As both an orphan and a resident of the poorest section of Zaphias (and possibly Terca Lumereis as a whole), Yuri had next to no education whatsoever. This is something he openly admits during the Giganto sidequest, when he's asked about one of the previous kings of Zaphias -- something that is apparently common knowledge even amongst school children -- and responds that he doesn't know much, if anything, about him. He also knows little about the world outside of Zaphias, having to learn from the rest of the group in order to understand certain things that were happening around him.

He also doesn't seem to really like things that require extensive thinking, or any kind of intellectual thinking at all -- books, studying, maps, detailed solutions to difficult problems -- which is part of why he doesn't have any magic artes, even though anyone with a bodhi blastia can learn them. He is also cited as seeming too impatient to "sit still and look at something for too long", which probably doesn't help matters.

Emotional; Even though he seems emotionally sound, Yuri's attitude toward emotions is actually incredibly reserved and almost entirely blocked off. When he seems to be in a good mood after something horrible has happened, it's because he's trying to make sure no one worries about him, and bring up everyone else's mood. He's gotten a little better about it, as he eventually allows himself to look openly upset in front of the group at one point, but generally if something's bothering Yuri, only someone who knows him and his tendencies well will ever pick up on it, as he usually chooses to simply lock the problem up inside of himself and either "solve" it or ignore it until it's brought to light (which is what he did after the two murders he committed, until Flynn confronted him about it).

He isn't secretly some sort of delicate butterfly, but he is very, very closed off. As a few examples from skits: "It's like you have genuine emotions, but your pride won't let you show them." and "You're concerned for them, aren't you? That's nothing to be ashamed of." In general, Yuri is simply too prideful to make himself look like anything but some wall that can never show anything that make may him look "weak" to anyone.

Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)

First Person:

[Right as the journal starts recording, it picks up some complaining. ... From the sound of it, complaining that wasn't actually meant to be recorded.]

Geez, does some unknown force or whatever have some kind of thing for me? I really don't like getting jerked around like this, you know! [a sharp, annoyed sigh] Sheesh ... Go mess with someone else for once, would you? Pretty sure I've already had my fill of that by now.

[The journal's volume then alternates between a normal speaking tone and a much softer one. He's flipping it around.]

Now, how did this thing ... Ah. I see.

[The recording stops. A few moments later, it's on again, catching the middle of another complaint.]

--hell, was it really on ...? Man, I must be really losing my touch, missing something like that.

[Whatever. Things like this weren't exactly his specialty anyway. And there's the whole "memory still coming back" thing ... Yeah, he's got his rightful excuses. Regardless of that, time for another sigh, though it's much less annoyed and more tired.]

... Hey. I guess saying something like "I'm back" would be a little pointless now, wouldn't it? [A small pause. Man, this felt awkward. Having the journal record all of that fussing he was just doing sure didn't help.] Well, I will say that I'm mostly remembering things. I can't say for sure that I'll remember every little detail, but just be patient with me for a few days. I'm sure everything else will come along soon enough.

[Another pause. He was kind of regretting having to ask, but ... well, he'd need to find out sooner or later. Might as well start now.]

So ... Who's up for filling me in on what I missed?

Third Person:

Even though Yuri had woken up a few hours ago, he was still in a bit of a daze. Was it even really a "daze"? He wasn't really sure what you'd call "waking up to surroundings that shouldn't be familiar but are, and hearing the voices of people you shouldn't know but do". Maybe "confused" was a little better, even if it was totally undermining the whole thing.

Regardless, though, there he was - in Luceti once again. With every new voice he heard say his name, more memories that he wasn't so sure he should even have came back to him. Names, faces, past conversations ... Man, it was way too weird. Even after taking a break from it all for a few hours - mostly to get out of the woods he found himself in than anything else - everything was still making his head spin. He remembered this place. It was bothering him quite a bit as to why, but something in the back of his mind was telling him that he should just be happy about that, weird as it was.

It wasn't until a few days later that the whole "returning memories" thing became less of some weird bother and more of a relief. ... Well, it was still a bit of a pain, and would probably never stop being weird, but knowing that he was still able to recognize people who seemed fond of him - or at least knew of him for whatever reason - helped him to put that aside.

"It'd be nice if everything just ... came back all at once, instead of this 'one at a time' thing that's going on," he complained to himself. "... Then again, that's probably worse. I can't imagine what kind of headache I'd end up with then."

At least said headache was only mild and ignorable for now. If that got any worse ... well. No point in worrying about something that hasn't happened yet.
