Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

FANDOM CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our fandom applications.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Personality:
"You can take the girl out the military, but you can't take the military out of the girl!"

Welch Vineyard sums up Ilia Silvestri the best with this statement, alluding to how much of Ilia's own character has been influenced by her identity as a soldier. She's an exemplary soldier and subordinate: law-abiding, mindful of rules and procedures, respectful of authority and highly disciplined— all of which contribute to her getting to where she is on the Calnus today in Star Ocean: First Departure. It's Ilia who constantly injects a sense of logic and questions any kneejerk actions that others can and may take. Take, for example, how she initially protests against Ronyx's intention to use the Time Gate to obtain the serum, for not only was use of the Time Gate an action liable for a court martial, they'd be engaging with the people of Roak and thus violating the Underdeveloped Planet Preservation Pact.

However, as further proved by how they went into the Time Gate anyway, Ilia can be a softie at times and allow for rules to bent. Within good reason, of course— jumping recklessly into things really isn't her style. In fact, even when Roddick and her were deposited at Kraat and needed to find the rest of the party, her first worry were her clothes and how she could blend in with the locals. No matter how rattled or displaced she may be, she remains steady and unshaken, just like the soldier that she is.

With her background in science (she is Head Science Officer on board the Calnus), it's no wonder that Ilia frowns upon more fantastical stories, preferring, instead, to believe that a scientific explanation exists. It is a belief that she clings to even in Roak where the legend of the Muah people as "gods" is popular and Symbology is rampant; both of which have not had any plausible scientific explanation on Earth prior to events in the game. She is, however, tactful enough to recognise that this may not be a popular opinion to hold in those times and keeps her mouth shut about the matter— at least, when dealing with the natives of that particular timeline.

This does not mean that she's willing to give up her opinions without a fight, however. She can and will argue her her case passionately (see: How she rants about the issue of the Muah people as gods to Ronyx) if she feels strongly against something, but she knows when to shut up and listen as well. Her scientific background also makes her highly observant and she's able to pick up tiny details such as how the fabric of Welch's clothing doesn't look like anything that can be made from material/technology on Earth or Roak.

With all being said about her "hard as a rock" (Ronyx's own words) soldier mannerisms, Ilia is nonetheless a very casual person, and engages others easily in conversation. She does most of the talking the first time she and Ronyx make contact with the Roak locals and succeeds in calming them down and making them listen to reason. However, in terms of outright diplomacy, Ronyx does better than her in engaging authority; Ilia has it easier speaking to the locals and the grassroots. Her sense of humour may help in this; she has a teasing side and can and will needle others for a joke though she is rarely malicious. She's calm and mature both in speech and mannerism, although this can slip if she's personally insulted (e.g. when Welch calls her old). She has quite a complex about her age, you see.

As a friend, Ilia comes across as a woman who's fairly reasonable and sensitive about the feelings of others. She's not a busybody and prefers to let people handle their own issues although she's always willing to provide a helping hand and honest opinions if need be. Ilia has a pretty high sense of self-esteem in most aspects (e.g. she actually prides herself on her sense of fashion), but she falls short in evaluating herself in the subject of love. She says it herself:

"Charms...? Oh, ewww! What are you talking about, MILLIE! Haha, my own charms!!!"

She is by no means unattractive, mind you, but she's self-deprecating to a fault when it comes to this. However, Ilia is also extremely transparent when it comes to the issue of relationships— when Welch teases her about Ronyx, whatever calm, mature front that she may have perfected simply falls apart and she ends up denying and blushing, not unlike a schoolgirl in love.

Strengths:
Taking her age and experience at the Earth Federation academy (it can be assumed that she did attend training there before becoming a military officer) into account, Ilia is actually very fit. She primarily uses hand-to-hand combat techniques when engaging in battles and prefers to use skills that utilise her fists (e.g. Avenging Fist, Palm of Destruction). Her constant training puts her at an advantage against normal non-combatants and she can probably take a few hits before she goes down.

Skills-wise, Ilia is the Calnus' Head Science Officer at the start of the game, indicating that she is quite intellectual. She's a fast thinker and can be a smooth talker when need be, as seen by how smoothly she lies her way out of answering a question about her (lack of) tail in-game. Putting people at ease comes easy enough for her; it is Ilia who speaks up to calm down Ronyx, Millie and Dorne when she and Ronyx appears on top Mt Metorx at the beginning of the game, after all. Her scientific background also makes her more observant; she is the first to mention that the fabric on Welch's clothing looks like nothing that Earth (in the future) nor Roak can create.

The nature of her work also helps shape her as someone who's honest, dependable and relaxed. Even when she throws off the timing of entering the Time Gate, she goes straight into damage control mode. She doesn't believe in harping too much over past mistakes...except those that she makes for romantic relationships, although that's a different issue altogether.
Weaknesses:
As skilled as Ilia may be in self-defense, she is nevertheless still human and limited by the extent of both human strength and stamina. She obviously isn't anywhere near the pinnacle of human strength, but she's definitely able to take more hits than say, Generic Villager 1. However, compared to the likes of Superman, she doesn't stand a chance.

Military training aside, though, Ilia isn't very much of a leader. Most of her screentime in the game has her following the rest of the party dutifully with no protests, and she gladly cedes any dealing with authority to both Roddick and Ronyx. This isn't to say that she has no leadership skills whatsoever (otherwise she would not be Head Science Officer), rather that she isn't the type to jump at the opportunity for leadership if she feels that there are other more fitting people to fill the spot.

She also has a childish streak that's actually rather easy to rouse— all it takes is for her age (also related: her looks due to her age) or her drinking to be brought into question. When these two things are challenged, Ilia will almost always never back down; take for example how Welch insults her for looking like a hag and she ends up in a contest to see how many guys they can pick up. She's not above petty childish arguing even if she's aware that it doesn't do her any favours.
