Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Zelos | Personality

[personal profile] 0xymoronic 2012-03-01 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: Zelos has a wonderfully complex personality.

Initially easy to view as the comic relief character of the group, Zelos is just a bundle of issues in need of some therapy.

That's not to say he is unstable or anything. All things considered Zelos is fairly well-adjusted. But in a world without therapy or even a basic understanding of childhood trauma, Zelos has a few deep-seated issues under his cheerful, womanizing mask.

Zelos is a ladies man, able to say the right things and do the right things to charm any woman. Well, almost any woman. There are a few notable exceptions to his charm, and unsurprisingly enough those are the woman he is closets too. It's not just his smooth and fast talking that gets the girls. Zelos is rather handsome, if he may say so himself. Coming of as a narcissistic jerk some of the time, Zelos does highly prize his looks. Not without cause mind you. Probably stems from some serious neglect issues in his past, but he is also genuinely vain. After all if you fuss enough without meaning it, eventually you can come to mean it.

Underneath his childish, narcissistic and vaguely perverted exterior lies a troubled, sensitive, and very perceptive man. However he also sublimates any worries or insecurities he has, hiding them beneath a cheerful mask and using perverted comments and actions to redirect attention away from his inner thoughts and more towards his outer actions. Strangely enough this makes him similar to Colette, though obviously not completely, because Colette isn't perverted as far as we know.

An important part of his personality is his reactions to half-elves. Like most people in Tethe'alla Zelos grew up with prejudice against half-elves the norm. Unlike other Tethe'allan nobles, however Zelos was sympathetic to their plight. He used his considerable power as the Chosen to stop some anti-half-elf laws from being passed despite having a personal bad history with a half-elf on top of the typical prejudice view that half-elves are unclean creatures. As Zelos travels with Lloyd's group and interacts with Raine and Genis his prejudices are softened, though, like any long standing prejudice they aren’t easily overthrown.

Helping the half-elves and the poor are the only good things he thinks have come out his power as the chosen.

Zelos family life is the keystone of his issues. Ignored by his father, and neglected by his mother, Mylene, his closest caretaker was the family butler Sebastian. But Sebastian was first and foremost the butler and there are certain things he couldn't do for Zelos, such as reprimand him if he misbehaved, or protect him from his parents neglect. Because the Wilder family was his employer, and there are certain boundaries the help cannot cross if they wish to stay employed.

His father had a mistress who gave birth to Seles. As children they were allowed to play together and were close. For Zelos this was probably because here was finally someone, a family member, who cared about him and wanted to be around him. Seles was also someone he could protect and be himself around, a breath of fresh air in a stifling home. But things were not to last. Zelos father died while he was young, making Zelos the new Chosen. Seles's mother, wanting a better life for her child then attempted to kill Zelos so that Seles could become the chosen. However her assassination attempt failed, and instead Mylene died that snowy day. Unfortunately that final act condemned not only Seles's mother to die for the crime, but Zelos to a life haunted by his mother's last and spiteful words that he should never have been born. Such strong and painful words warped Zelos's psyche. Speculatively this could explain his attitude with woman, never showing a serious face or a serious interest in a deeper relationship.

This final act also destroyed Zelos and Seles's familial relationship, as Seles was banished to an abbey for life. This left the young, newly appointed Chosen Zelos alone in a large empty mansion, with only his butler for a not-quite-parent, new heavy responsibilities, and the nobles of Meltokio just waiting to see him how useful he was, so they could use his power for themselves.

This environment, coupled with harsh memory brewed a deep self-loathing, for himself as a person, and his unwanted title. Like any child he drew all these events that had happened beyond his power and took the guilt all for himself. It was his fault his mother died, and the chosen-system fault for forcing her to be unhappy with a husband she didn't love and a child she never wanted. This hate for the Chosen system is the only half-positive sign, showing that he didn't take all the blame and guilt on himself, and was able to blame some outside influence. Unfortunately he was a big part of the system and so guilt still tarnished him.

The pressure of the chosen responsibilities, most likely difficult for a child to comprehend fully, nurtured a feeling that he was worthless. Probably because he didn't understand all that it entailed and whoever was teaching him didn't set any of his fears to rest. As any child would, especially after such trauma, he came to a have a firm belief that Seles would have made a far better chosen than himself. Seeing as she was younger, this isn't likely. But a child is rarely rational, and Zelos emotional wounds were still fresh. All these things gave Zelos a very low feeling of self-worth.

As for the noble society he now had to have many, daily interactions with, a worst situation couldn't have been possible. In the cutting world of noble politics, Zelos was the prime rib of political allies, second only in power and influence to the King himself, especially as head of the state religion, above even the pope. Luckily, since the chosen system uses arranged marriages, he was not active husband material, but, as the previous chosen's affair proved, you could quite possibly hope for a little something that could give you quite a power boost. This acidic environment forced Zelos to lock away his true emotions and instead project the image of a strong, confident, but superficial Chosen, an amusement, a possible ally, but never a threat.

Zelos's teenaged years brought forth a new dimension of noble politics. Suddenly he was very popular among the Meltokio noblewoman, both young and old. However it was just new step in an old dance, as power and not friendship is why they sought him out. So Zelos took advantage of this interest both in court and at the Imperial Research Academy where he studied, using his female classmates to take notes ad tests for him. This allowed Zelos to graduate the top of his class, even though his main talent was in mathematics.

It is quite possible that the only true friendship Zelos developed in his formative years was with Sheena, though it was probably quite antagonistic at times before calming into the still dysfunctional but more stable relationship they display in game. Though they are loathed to admit it out loud, both do care for each other in their own ways; and while hints of romantic feelings are apparent, they both would have a lot of things to work through together before it could even become a healthy or stable relationship.

As time went on Zelos became even more bitter than usual towards his position as Chosen, and generally viewed that his life was as good as it was going to get, which was pretty close to rock bottom as far as he felt. This allowed him to be pulled into Cruxis schemes, as they promised to remove his Chosen status, which he so very hated.

Soon Zelos interactions with Lloyd's group start, after he used his power to help them help Colette by negotiating with the King and Pope. This is probably because he felt a kinship with her as she was also a Chosen. This kinship is what makes Zelos decided to join them and travel to Iselia in violation of the terms of help.

It is traveling with Lloyd's group, surrounded by idealist and optimists, okay, mainly Lloyd and Colette, but still that Zelos starts to come to terms with himself. The tower of Salvation is where we start to see the effect his traveling with the group as ultimately he does not betray them and then commit suicide by traveling companions, though he is certainly gives the group plenty of evidence to doubt him, except for Lloyd.
Lloyd's honest attitude and willingness to see beyond Zelos's title of Chosen, as well as his unwavering trust helped Zelos make up his mind as to which side he wanted to be on and made Lloyd a true and cherished friend to Zelos.

After the game, Zelos works to change the new world, and while he is still womanizing and narcissistic, he has started to deal with his past and the scars it left on him. Besides some habits are simply too fun and too well ingrained to simply drop.

Strengths: Excellent swordsman, able to use magic, good looks, excellent political maneuvering skills, unshakable trust if it is gained by a person, mathematics, easing tense situations, flirting, very charming, perceptive about people, able to mask his true emotions, great memory for faces, quick mind, angelic senses.

Weaknesses: Sublimates emotions until breaking point, vain, mild narcissism, can be immature, a little irresponsible, can be a jerk, hates snow to the point of avoiding it religiously, still has self-loathing issues but is working on them, ability to mask his true emotions even from friends, still some lack of internal self-worth issues, slight remaining prejudices against half-elves, can be too flirty, pervert, abandonment issues.
