Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Samurai Goroh | F-ZERO | Not Reserved!?

[personal profile] avaricious 2012-03-01 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Character

Name: Samurai Goroh
Fandom: F-Zero: Falcon no Densetsu
Gender: Male
Age: 37
Time Period: After Episode 13 (11 in the dub)
Wing Color: Hot pink, with orange 'flames' on the tips (Like the Fire Stingray)
History:

Goroh's history in the GP Legend isn't well known. What is known is that he's earned a name as being a legendary space pirate and thief, infamous enough to be well known but elusive enough that his face wasn't known even to the authorities. By the time we meet him in the series, he's married to fellow thief, Lisa Brilliant, though the two of them are more prone to working separately and often go their separate ways, despite usually being around to bail the other out. In the four episode, a small time thug named Bibilan decides to capitalize on Goroh's infamy and starts posing as him after stealing a supply of medical supplies. When Ryu Suzaku, a member of the Elite Mobile Task Force (a type of police force heavily involved in the F-ZERO races) came looking for the infamous samurai, he met up with the real Goroh, who had already been making his own plans to track down the impostor. Deciding the kid might be useful, he teams up with Suzaku and the two track down the impostor. In the ensuing battle, he is revealed to be the real Samurai Goroh. He also takes off with all the stolen loot and leaves Ryu Suzaku tied up in the middle of the desert with temporary restraints. However he proves that, despite being an outlaw, he is still noble enough to leave behind the medicine that Ryu Suzaku was looking for, enabling the ex-cop to save the sick children that caused him to go to all the trouble to begin with.

In the following episode, his wife manages to get into all sorts of trouble when she crosses paths with Zack Levin, one of the members of the Elite Mobile Task Force and steals his F-Zero machine. Although he and Ryu manage to corner her duing the next race, Samurai Goroh shows up to bail her out of trouble and provide her with a handy escape. In episode 13, he and his gang return when they hijack a cargo ship operated by the criminal organization, Dark Million. He and his gang are planning to operate a clean operation, but his longtime friend (and brother-in-law) Antonio Guster had different plans. As they took care of the guards and loaded up all the gold, Guster set the cargo ship up to explode, killing the lives of those on board. Although furious with Guster, he did little more than snap at him. Despite Guster's flaws, Goroh still trusted his long time friend and partner, even when Lisa showed up to warn him that Guster wasn't to be trusted. Her fears were confirmed when Zoda was able to convince Guster to turn on his own friend. In the next race, Guster attempted to kill Goroh in the race, but thanks to some help from Ryu Suzaku, they were able to pin Antonio down. In the ensuing confrontation, Antonio attempted to use one of his explosives to take Goroh down, but the samurai easily sliced through it and rendered the explosive inert. Although he had Guster at his mercy, his old partner declared he wasn't afraid of the samurai, knowing that he disliked killing. Reluctantly, Goroh parted ways with him. Although Ryu Suzaku proceeded to try and bring Goroh back at that point, Lisa Brilliant showed up in a ship overhead just in time to haul in her husband and help him avoid unwanted complications with the authorities.

Personality:

The outward appearance of Samurai Goroh is a man of loose morals and no honor, despite his self-given title. This is a natural consequence of being from two hundred years in the future where the term 'samurai' no longer has much meaning. However, his name is likely an alias or moniker that was earned from his incredible skill with the blade and not because of any adherance to some sort of samurai lifestyle. In spite of his criminal behavior, Goroh's moral compass tends to not too stray too far into evil territory to the point his motto is "Steal, but never kill." He demonstrates this twice, first in how he spares Ryu Suzaku after the two teamed up, even though it would likely cause him less trouble to just off him. Likewise, he is furious when Antonio Guster destroys an entire cargo ship they had previously raided. While destruction would be typical behavior for a group of space pirates, it's something he absolutely won't tolerate himself. He naturally expects all of his subordinates to do the same.

Aside from Guster, Goroh's methods work and not only is he infamous throughout the galaxy, but he has the respect of his bandits, who later follow him into the most dangerous situations without hesitation. They even refer to him as 'Master Goroh' when speaking to him. Despite his gruff attitude, he's a natural leader with a cool headed attitude. He's shown smirking in satisfaction and just a bit of pride whenever he sees his subordinates performing well on the job. In general, he prefers to stand back and let them handle the work. Not that he is reluctant to get his hands dirty, but because he's genuinely proud of the capability of his people and likes to see them at their best. He only gets involved if they run into trouble that's beyond them, at which point his tremendous skill with the sword comes into play.

However, he's still a thief and a level of dishonesty comes with it. He's contantly plotting and rarely shows what his real plans are, save for those who are in on it. When an impostor takes his place, he has one of his subordinates pose as an innocent girl trying to reclaim her stolen property, making herself look like easy bait for Bibilan's henchmen. Likewise, he also befriends Ryu Suzaku, not revealing his true identity and uses him to achieve his own ends. When Ryu angrily berates him for tricking him in a later episode, Goroh remarks that it was his mistake for being so trusting. He's a thief through and through and he won't hesitate to take what he wants or lie to those he needs to.

On the rocky planet he lives on, Samurai Goroh's personal home (and base of operations for his gang) is a quaint Japanese-style home where he can be found making his own tea (thought it's pretty intense) from natural components and a garden outside it, suggesting a deeper, different side of Goroh than what most see. However, it also serves as a front with a secret entrance beneath the floor panel, leading to the secret hiding place for his own spaceship. Given that the entire town he lives in is used to hide the ship, it can be surmised that he has the loyalty of the entire town as well, possibly being something of a leader to them as well and that they are under his protection.

Ultimately, his crew is like his family and he's incredibly loyal to them. Eventually that same sense of loyalty is extended to Ryu as well. Although at his current canon point this connections is more tenuous, he later risks the lives of himself and his crew to protect Haruka when they find her. Despite being severely outclassed by the overpowered Zoda, Goroh goes blow to blow with him, even staggering after him for a second round after being nearly fried by an energy attack. It's only thanks to the arrival of Ryu and backup from his wife that he even survives the encounter.

But he's not all serious and grim. Goroh has a lighter side to him and does different things to amuse himself. When he first meets Ryu, he casually tosses a banana peel in his path, moments after Ryu walked into the tavern taking down people like a badass. He's consistently seen being amused by the antics going on around him, even if he's not always involved in them himself. What he does like is getting reactions out of people, as a way of judging their character. He will intentionally mislead people and try to get under their skin just to see what sort of person they are. And because, well, it's good fun too.

Strengths:

Physical: In a battle, Goroh can appear to be a very intimidating fighter. Despite his husky build, he is very muscular and more than capable of putting a few dents in a person's head with his fists. What makes him deadlier is the fact that even with all that muscle, he is very agile and has demonstrated the ability to do consecutive backflips and perform complex maneuvers with his sword. In the anime, his skill with the blade is amazing enough to cut a missile in half, later he does the same thing to a space ship. Not only that, but his precision with the blade is such that he can slice off the clothes of his foes with a few quick strokes without drawing a drop of blood. Being an F-Zero racer also means that not only is he an excellent driver, but he also has very keen reflexes and can react unflinchingly in what was once a sport with a high mortality rate. He's also a very skilled thief, although his gang tends to operate more like bandits or space pirates, depending on where they are operating.

Mental: Although for the most part Goroh seems like a simple thug, his boisterous attitude actually hides a fairly keen mind. He's a very skilled manipulator, as seen when he manipulates Ryu into teaming up with him to capture someone else posing as Samurai Goroh, only to double cross his temporary ally at the end. As an F-Zero pilot, he's required to be fairly knowledgable about how his own machines work, so he's a capable mechanic, though he's no inventor. However, given he hails from the farflung future, he's required to know more about mechanics and technology than what currently exists today. Furthermore, he has the qualities a leader needs to be able to lead a gang of thieves.

Emotional: For the most part, Goroh is pretty in control of himself. His marriage to his wife is unusual, but one with respect. In spite of being little more than a thug, he has a strict code on not taking lives, unless absolutely necessary. In solitude, he is known to meditate, revealing himself to actually live up to his 'samurai' title in some aspects of his own life. Although prone to betraying temporary allies, he's a steadfast and loyal ally once someone has earned his respect and proved themself worthy of his help.

Weaknesses:

Physical: Although a competent fighter, Goroh is only a human and if bested in a battle, he's not going to be pulling out any kind of healing factor to recover from his wounds. Beyond that, his reliance on such a dated weapon can sometimes put him at a disadvantage to those who rely on guns. For as skilled as he is with a blade, his true potential is held back due to his reluctance to kill. Every swing of his sword is done carefully to avoid killing his opponent. Without that restraint, he'd be far more dangerous.

Mental: Although competent in many respects, Goroh is hardly any genius. He might be able to fix some mechanical parts on his ship, but he certainly couldn't build one or tell you why or how it works. His knowledge is more the 'street smarts' kind and is of the sort gained from a life as a rogue, even if he is highly successful at what he does. But there's not much that be said for him academically. Ask him about the history of his world and he might be able to cobble five historic figures from memory, but have no idea who they are or what they did.

Emotional: For being a space pirate, being unwilling to kill can cause him as much harm as good. He holds himself in back in battle, so he doesn't kill his foes. He also won't kill someone who wants him dead, best seen when he parts ways with Antonio Guster. The man still wants him dead (and he tries to poison Goroh in the tie-in video game), but Goroh still won't just off the man. His stubborn loyalty also endangers himself and his crew when they decide to protect Haruka from Zoda and his forces. Certainly a space pirate would be better off just leaving well enough alone. In spite of being an outlaw, Goroh's noble streak keeps him from being as dangerous a threat as he could be.

Samples

First Person:

Didn't think I'd ever see this dump again. Hell, I was hoping I wouldn't see it again. Looks like the place hasn't changed much. And damn, isn't it just the luck I'd come back in the winter? My feet are going to freeze off at this rate. Give me Clyton weather any day. At least it never snows there.

One other thing. Seems my memory of this place is pretty vague. It's been a few weeks since I was here before, but this whole place was like one screwed up dream. I was living with some other people before. Some breasty woman, a dead guy, a teenage girl, and a cat. At least I think it was a cat. Damn, it sounds even crazier saying it out loud, doesn't it?

Third Person:

Two weeks ago, Samurai Goroh had returned to Luceti in one of his least graceful of landings, right smack onto a pair of wings he hadn't previously possessed. Though they were better now, they still seemed to ache whenever he threw his dusty leather vest over them. Of all the things that pissed him off about this place more, it was the damn wings. He didn't really mind the color, really. Everyone knew that hot pink was the color of manly men, but simply having the wings themselves was bad for his image. He certainly hadn't quit doing his usual routine of intense working out, so the laughably small wings stood in stark contrast to his heavily muscular and stocky build. It was like a poor joke had been made on his account.

Malnosso or not, he still half suspected Zoda or Bibilan of being behind it. Or maybe Antonio Guster. While Guster may have been a complete bastard, he did have his limits. Dumping Goroh in some god knows where backwater planet would be extreme for even him. But Bibilan? Oh, that fraud would find that to be just desserts. After the humiliation that Bibilan went through, it certainly would make sense for him to try it. It hardly stopped the samurai from making plans to pay back his the samurai poser in kind. Nobody crossed Samurai Goroh. It was practically his mantra. Or one of them, anyway. Certainly among his less kinder life sayings.

For now, he was stuck in this dump until he found a way out. With everything free, he found his usual ways of keeping himself busy otherwise unavailable. Without want of anything, pirating was pointless. Sure, the battle dome was helping him improve his F-Zero game, but simulations were never as good as the real thing. The pilots lacked that human instinct to be utterly devious and ruthless on the track. There was no satisfaction without the struggle. He could take down all his rivals a hundred times and it wouldn't mean anything in there. Smugly declaring his victory to a fake opponent just felt sad and pathetic. He couldn't even take it seriously in the post-race.

Which left him staring at the back of his journal, skimming the introduction of the so-called RP Manager. Goroh was a lot of things, the benefit of being the criminal version of an everyman. These missions sounded up his alley, for the most part. The pay was absolutely shit, but it was mercenary work. And besides that, he might be able to use it to find a way off this rock. He just hoped to hell these people had managed something beyond simple interstellar travel. He couldn't imagine anything worse than being stranded on a primitive planet that hadn't even managed to get past its own moon.
