Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Shinji Ikari | Rebuild of Evangelion

[personal profile] harmonia 2012-03-01 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Shinji is useless. There’s nothing special about him, he has no purpose, and all he does is take up space. He simply exists, and for the life of him, he can’t figure out why.

…or, at least, that’s what Shinji thinks. Since his father abandoned him, Shinji convinced himself that he was useless, unnecessary. According to the series creator, Shinji thinks he’s so unnecessary that he can’t even commit suicide, no matter how much he hates himself. He doesn’t think he has any particularly good qualities, which is partly why when he’s first told to pilot the Evangelion, he refuses. “I can’t do it, it’s impossible. What you’re asking me is impossible!” Shinji, who lived day to day simply by accepting whatever came his way, didn’t think he had what it would take to fight the angels attacking the city. He doesn’t think he has what it takes to save mankind. Even after multiple experiences piloting the Eva, he still doesn’t think he’s any good at it. The other pilots are surely better than him, so why did his father ask for him?

Shinji wants to have a purpose, though. He wants to be needed, he wants his father to acknowledge him, and he wants to have a reason to live. These are the reasons that despite feeling betrayed by his father, he went to Nerv and agreed to pilot the Evangelion multiple times despite being absolutely terrified of what he would have to do. When asked about why he does it, he changes his reasons constantly, but the main reason, the one he rarely ever speaks about, is because he hopes to someday finally be accepted by his father. He wants his father to praise him—this is his main motivation.

Because Shinji never had that acceptance, he spent a good part of his life alone. He is withdrawn, distant, and doesn’t make friends easily because he’s afraid of trusting others. He even says that he used to hate dealing with people, that he even hated being praised. He’s afraid that if he places the same trust in others that he had his father, they’re just going to hurt him the same way that his father did. Ritsuko Akagi compares Shinji’s situation to the hedgehog’s dilemma—even though hedgehogs want to get close for warmth, they can’t because if they get too close, they’ll poke each other with their quills. Shinji can’t reach out to others because he knows that getting close to them means a greater chance of him getting hurt, but instead of trying to find a comfortable distance, he just avoids people all together.

This isn’t to say that Shinji pushes people away, however. He’s actually quite polite toward others, though he usually isn’t the first to approach. While he is generally shy and introverted, he’s actually pretty friendly once you get to know him. He even starts to look out for his friends once he feels more comfortable around them. (For example, he makes Rei a special lunch when she tells him that she doesn’t eat meat, and in the anime when Kensuke talks about how much he’d love to pilot his own giant robot, Shinji points out that his mother would probably worry about him.) It would be more appropriate to say that Shinji keeps others at arm’s length—while he prefers to keep to himself rather than interact with others, he generally doesn’t push away people who reach out to him. If he didn’t keep to himself so much, he’d probably have no problems making friends, but he’s only just getting used to being around so many other people.

Unfortunately, he may also be too polite. Shinji tends to say yes to everything and always does exactly what he’s told. After his first experience piloting the Eva, everyone assumed that he wouldn’t be piloting again because of such a traumatic incident (he had never piloted before, so he didn’t know what he was doing—he even ends up passing out from the pain), but when he was asked, he said he’d do it again. Ritsuko suggests that it’s probably just what he’s used to. The manga describes Shinji as a fatalist—he accepts whatever happens because that’s “just the way things are,” that’s how he’s always lived. And yet, even later, Shinji admitted that he had no idea why he agreed to pilot the thing again. Aside from his habit of accepting everything, he also tends to avoid conflict. In the anime, Asuka points out how often Shinji apologizes for things, even for things he hasn’t done. She thinks he’s spineless, and Shinji wouldn’t disagree.

He also really cares about what people think of him. In fact, he cares too much. While approval from his father is the most important, he cares about what others think of him, too. He wants to be noticed and he wants people to treat him well, and if he isn’t, he runs away. After Touji’s death in the manga, for example, Shinji refuses to return to school because he couldn’t face his friends. When Misato yells at him for not following orders, Shinji literally runs away, wandering around the city and even sleeping in the streets overnight. His main motivation is his father’s approval, but people notice him when he pilots the Evangelion—they praise him, they compliment him, and it feels good. This is another reason that he pilots. He pilots because people will like him, they’ll appreciate what he’s doing. At the same time, because Shinji thinks so little of himself, he’ll never be happy with that alone. As long as he thinks he’s worthless, he’ll remind himself that he doesn’t deserve the praise that people give him.

By this point, Shinji’s learning to be a little more honest, both with himself and others. While the other boys are busy fawning over Misato in the anime, Shinji doesn’t hesitate to let them know how much of a slob she actually is. He even tells Misato that it’s no wonder she’s still single by her age when she starts her mornings off with a beer and forgets to cook breakfast for them. He’s received words of praise from his father and realizes that this might be what he wants in life—he even admits this to Asuka when she asks why he pilots the Eva, saying that this might be his reason. Although he used to dislike praise, it felt good when his father told him how well he did. Similarly, while he disliked being around people before, he’s finally making some real friends. He’s a little less closed-off than he is at the start (even if the difference isn’t much), though it probably wouldn’t take anything too big to make him shut the world away again.

Shinji Ikari | Rebuild of Evangelion

Strengths: When Shinji can convince himself that something is worth doing, even if he’s scared, his will and determination are incredible. Sometimes, his idea of facing things and not running away can be destructive, but he’s succeeded in defeating angels and saving the world multiple times just by reminding himself that he “mustn’t run away.” (Great examples of this are the scenes at the end of the two movies, the surprisingly successful Operation Yashima and the fight against the tenth angel.) He’s gotten himself in trouble for this, of course—a result of putting himself in danger and not following orders, but the fact is that no matter how many times he runs away, once he sets his mind to something, he can do it.

Even though Shinji’s reasons for being a pilot are entirely self-serving, it doesn’t change the fact that he is helpful to others because of it. It’s praise and purpose that he seeks, but he’s still helping others by continuing to pilot. He can’t stand to see his friends hurting and in pain, so even when he tries to leave Nerv and forget about everything, he always ends up coming back. On a lesser scale (that is, minus the giant biomechanical robots), Shinji is still helpful in other ways—he cleans up Rei’s room for her while she’s out, simply because he knows it shouldn’t be left a mess, he makes lunches for his friends, and he is always concerned about their safety.

Shinji is pretty self-sufficient. He’s lived without his parents for a long time, so he’s used to doing things for himself. He learns to cook after living with Misato, simply because she is absolutely awful at it (because unlike her, he can’t survive on a steady diet of beer, snacks, and instant meals), and his friends agree that he’s actually pretty good at it. As a result, he even ends up preparing lunches for himself and his friends at school. He’s also played the cello since he was five, though the only reason he still plays is because “no one told him to stop.” He insists that even though he’s played for so long, he’s not very good at it, but Asuka disagrees. This might be a sign that Shinji’s better at more things than he gives himself credit for.

Weaknesses: Shinji has no sense of self-worth. Like, at all. Because his father abandoned him, he convinced himself that he must be a useless, worthless person. He isn’t needed, he isn’t good at anything, all he does is disappoint people. He thinks that he needs the Evangelion because without it, he has no purpose. Whenever someone gets hurt, whenever someone dies, all Shinji can think is, “Why wasn’t it me? It should have been me instead.” Because Shinji thinks this way, he doesn’t tend to think of himself when he makes decisions. He tells Misato that he pilots the Evangelion for everyone else and she yells at him for completely ignoring his own feelings on the matter. She’s had to tell him on multiple occasions to “do it because you want to.” Before Operation Yashima, Shinji worries about the possibility of dying. When Rei says she won’t let that happen because she’ll protect him, he says that maybe his life isn’t worth protecting. As long as Shinji continues to think about how worthless he is, he’ll never truly be happy.

Since Shinji has no self-worth, he tries to find his personal value in others. He wants people to notice him, he wants people to like him, so he pilots the Evangelion despite being absolutely terrified of it. If he does well, then maybe his father will need him. Maybe he’ll praise him again. It feels good to feel needed, to have a purpose. However, if people don’t react well, he’ll run away. If there is a chance of him getting hurt, he’ll run away. Shinji’s natural response to pain is to run away, whether literally or figuratively—he’s refused to come home on multiple occasions just so he wouldn’t have to face his roommates and he’s plugged in his headphones and shut out the world just so he won’t have to face the reality of things. He doesn’t like being hurt, so he tries to avoid the things that hurt him, even if running away ends up being more painful than the thing that hurt him in the first place. He hasn’t realized yet that running away is pointless and sometimes more painful than anything else.

When Shinji becomes emotional, he really becomes emotional. He doesn’t tend to be very honest about his feelings, but when something hurts, when there’s nothing else he can do about it, he will let everyone know. In the anime when Touji asked Shinji to hit him back, Shinji was in tears when he told Touji that it was he who deserved to be hit, not his friend. He even went on to explain why (“I'm a coward! I'm dishonest, I'm sneaky, and a wimp.”). When Shinji was forced to fight the angel-possessed Evangelion that Asuka was piloting, he was so upset about his father having forced him to fight that he started threatening to blow up Nerv Headquarters afterward. He had to be forcefully subdued before they could move on because in that state, Shinji was a very real threat. While not as quick to snap as his manga counterpart, when Shinji gets angry, he gets angry. Once the initial shock of things wears off, though, he usually becomes despondent, and it can take days for him to get out of it.

Because he is shy and not very outgoing, Shinji may seem like the kind of person that is difficult to get along with. Touji even states that Shinji seems like an entirely different person after getting to know him better. Even though he tends to be polite toward other people, he keeps to himself so much that he isn’t easy to approach, and he’s probably fine with that. He’s also the kind of person who generally tries to avoid confrontation, so when Touji went to hit him because his sister was hurt in an angel attack, Shinji didn’t do much to fight back. He doesn’t stand up for himself very often, and even when he does, he usually just ends up giving in.

Samples

First Person: Um… I was walking back to my apartment today and I saw a beautiful garden outside someone’s house. I remembered something someone told me and… well, I was wondering, why do you grow plants? Do you have a special reason for it?

…I-if you grow them, I mean. I was just curious if people had other reasons for growing them. I didn’t know that people grow plants other than because they have to. You don’t see a lot of people growing plants where I come from. …I guess because they can’t. The plants here are really different, though. I saw flowers I’ve never even seen before. It’s nice to see things like that.

Third Person: Had it really been a month already?

Shinji’s feelings about the place had shifted too many times to count just over the course of a month alone. At first, it was a very welcome escape from reality, even if it was strange. Here, he wouldn’t be made to do things that he didn’t want to do. Here, he could live peacefully without having to worry about getting into the Evangelion again or fighting the angels or the world ending or… anything like that. Here, he could live without consequence. Sure, his friends weren’t here, but he was used to being alone, so he didn’t mind it. At first, living like this was actually kind of peaceful.

But as the days passed, he found himself starting to feel anxious. He felt anxious because there were no angels here, no Eva, no Nerv, no anything. To have gone from doing nothing to doing something to doing nothing again felt very strange. It was almost like he didn’t know what to do with himself anymore. And then, there was an experiment, which only served to frustrate him even more. Shinji had been warned about the experiments, but he hadn’t really been worried about them. Not until he actually experienced one himself. Now, he was worried, maybe even a little afraid.

With this in mind, Shinji felt an odd sense of relief when he finally came across his father’s old cassette player in the store that afternoon. Relief and… something else. He had found comfort in this thing for a very long time and yet, for some reason, he couldn’t help hesitating to pick it up again. The experiment was partly to blame for that, he was sure, but it might have had to do with what was going on at home, too. Sometimes, he wanted nothing to do with any of those things. Sometimes, he didn’t really care if the world ended or not. But in Luceti, he didn’t have to think about those things and…

He felt useless. That useless feeling might be what drove him to pick up the old cassette player, check for batteries, and put the headphones in despite whatever had made him hesitate. The sound of music that filled his ears was relaxing. He missed it. It had been so much harder to shut things out without this thing. If he had this, he wouldn’t have to think about what he was missing here or about experiments that might make him go crazy or about friends leaving him behind. He wouldn’t have to think about whether or not he wanted to stay here or if he wanted to go home right this very moment. Sometimes, it was better if he just didn’t think at all.

The walk back to the apartment is probably one of the most peaceful walks he’s had since the day he set foot in Luceti.
