Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

FANDOM CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our fandom applications.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Astrid Hofferson | How To Train Your Dragon | Reserved | 2/3

[personal profile] betterviking 2012-01-08 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Tough, determined, abrasive, and fierce... the best way to describe Astrid's attitude is that she is a force to be reckoned with.

Having been born into Berk's war against dragons, it's basically all she's ever known. In Berk, almost all of the focus is on becoming a great warrior so one can defend the village against dragons just like everyone else. It’s something that has to be done, and it’s something that Astrid has dedicated all her time and focus on. In a way, working to become a strong Viking is a passion of hers that borders on obsession. When there aren’t any raids going on, Astrid usually spends her time studying what she needs to learn, honing her skills, and so on. She wants to be the best warrior in Berk, and in order to do that she feels that she has to be completely and totally dedicated to it. This leaves no time for socialization beyond what’s necessary or relevant, not that it really matters much. Camaraderie is important, sure, but it’s not a top priority when there’s already so much for her to focus on.

Astrid is also fairly serious, and has a no-nonsense attitude towards most things in life. She does have a bit of a sense of humour, but it’s fairly dry and it doesn’t come up very often. More often than not, Astrid generally regards things in life with either anger, or a gruff sort of indifference. She not the type of person to joke or pal around with anyone, and generally she’s quite harsh on both herself and others, regardless of the kind of mood she’s in. In a way, one could say that Astrid’s default emotion is anger. She’s always aggressive and temperamental to a certain degree, and there’s always a chance for things to get worse depending on what’s going on or who’s bothering her.

However, tough as Astrid is, there's definitely a softer side to her that's hidden behind that wall of anger. It doesn't come out very often, mainly because there has never really been much of an opportunity or reason for Astrid to show that side of herself. Always being so focused on learning to hunt and kill dragons doesn't allow much room for thinking about the more positive things in life.

Although without the war and the need to keep on training herself for battle (like in Gift of the Night Fury), Astrid is actually a bit awkward. Not in the way that Hiccup is, but more like she's just not used to being able to express herself in a way that doesn't involve hurting something. (Or training herself to hurt something.) She makes a point to act almost overwhelmingly enthusiastic and cheerful, although from time to time that roughness still manages to come out. She means well when she does have an opportunity to let that positivity shine, but it usually comes across as being pretty awkward for both her and whoever she's interacting with.

Also, if you want a pat on the back, Astrid would definitely not be the best person to go to. She has never been one to sugarcoat things, and she's always been brutally honest at best. If someone screws up in any way, shape, or form, Astrid won't hesitate to let them know and she won't apologize for it. To her, telling somebody what they want to hear is a waste of energy, since it allows no room for growth. Better to tell someone the truth about their mistakes so that way they can acknowledge them and strive to improve.

Strengths:
Physical: Physically, Astrid is very capable for someone her size. She's been shown handling heavy items like an axe and shield with great ease, whereas Hiccup other people appeared to struggle holding onto just one of them. She also skilled with hand to hand combat, having managed to knock out Snotlout with a single punch even though he's much larger than her, not to mention that she appears to know a decent amount of other ways to cause people pain. Beyond that, her size also works to her advantage. Without the added weight to slow her down, Astrid can move quite quickly - leaving her able to rush an opponent, leap distances, or even outrun some dragons (such as the Deadly Nadder) with seemingly great ease.
Mental: Astrid is fairly smart. Not necessarily as far as things like academics go, but she's good with planning and thinking on her feet. Throughout the film, Astrid has been thrown into situations that required immediate thought and action on her part. Her mind always goes for survival - either her own or the survival of someone else - and whenever the situation calls for it, she'll immediately try to think of something to get out of that situation safely (or at least with minimal damage). Knowing to go for a shield during the beginning of dragon training, attacking a Nadder even when her axe was lodged in Hiccup's shield, and using her axe to hold open a gate have all been instances where Astrid used her quick thinking to keep herself (or others) safe in a potentially lethal situation.

Beyond that, Astrid has shown her skill in planning by how she carried out stalking tracking down Hiccup. Throughout the little montage of Hiccup learning more about dragons and applying that knowledge to dragon training, Astrid had been shown growing increasingly frustrated with his success and had begun to try tracking him down. It focused mostly on Hiccup's successes rather than Astrid's time spent tracking him down during the latter part of the montage, but in the end it's very clear that she spent a lot of time planning and thinking about tracking him down and confronting him. Once Astrid finally did end up confronting Hiccup, she had already been waiting at his little "meeting spot" with Toothless for what appeared to be a some time. It may not seem like much, being able to do this would have required a lot of planning and forethought in advance. Astrid would have had to spend a good stretch of time following Hiccup, memorizing his daily habits, and other creepy and stalker-y things in order for her to realize that spot was where he'd head to and get there before him. So while Astrid may not be a planner by nature, if something intrigues her enough, she'll plan something out and follow through with it until she gets what she's after.

Weaknesses:
Physical: As far as Vikings and her tribe are concerned, as strong as Astrid is (and she is quite strong), she still has a ways to go before she becomes a hardened warrior like the older women and men in her tribe. She's still quite young, and she certainly has a lot of growing to do as far as the "Viking physique" in the film seems to go. All the older women and men in the Hairy Hooligans tribe are much bigger and bulkier, which would be more efficient for fighting larger, more powerful dragons. As it is, Astrid is still fairly thin and doesn't appear to have very much weight or muscle mass to her. So while she's a skilled fighter and is very strong for someone her size, if Astrid doesn't have her axe with her, she wouldn't be very effective against larger, more powerful enemies.
Emotional: As far as emotions go, one of Astrid's biggest weaknesses is probably the fact that she gets angry so easily. She has a very short temper, and when Astrid gets angry she usually reacts violently. More often than not, she'll respond by hitting whoever managed to upset her since, as far as she's concerned, they deserve it. However, if she's really angry, Astrid will usually go off to vent her frustrations while practicing by hurling her axe into trees and other such things.

Samples
First Person: Q&A, please!

Third Person: The first thing Astrid notices is the cold.

The deep chill of winter is nothing new to her, but something about it that just isn’t right. There was no snow back in Berk – not right now, anyway. It was still green when she was there, what... a few minutes ago? Or at least it seems like she was there a few minutes ago.

Either way, it’s far too early for the Snoggletog season, so why is the weather so cold?

... Well. At this point, the answer is clear enough.

Wherever this place is, it isn’t Berk or anywhere like it. The season isn’t right, the landscape doesn’t match up, something just feels off. It’s almost as if she’s...

“... What?”

Her axe is gone. She had been sharpening it earlier, just waiting for Hiccup to pop up after running off like a coward and now it’s just up and vanished. ... And she isn’t even in the right clothing, either.

How did this even happen?

Hiccup!”

While it may not be the best answer to this particular problem, it’s certainly easier to blame this all on someone she was already upset with. However, there’s still the matter of finding her clothing and, more importantly, her axe. As much as she’d like to throttle Hiccup, those always come first. Astrid can’t fight or defend herself without her axe, and there is absolutely no way she is going to spend all her time walking around in some ridiculous dress.

There’s a strong pain in her back, but it hardly matters. Astrid can handle pain just as well as anyone else, if not better. There's no point in getting distracted by a bit of pain, anyhow. There are more important things for her to focus on right now.

First, find her axe and clothing. Then hunt down Hiccup and find out what in Odin's name is going on.

1) What's one thing you hope to achieve in the future?
I need to become a great warrior. It's something that I have to do, and I have to keep on working and practicing until that happens. You may be born into a Viking tribe, but you're not born a Viking. Nobody just wakes up and suddenly becomes an amazing warrior, and if they do, then they're hiding something.

You have to work hard, you have to fight for it, and you have to do everything you can to make sure you're the best you can be. I still have a long way to go, but I won't give up and I won't stop until I get there.

2. What do you think of yourself? How do you value your own life?
I'm not perfect. I still have a lot of work to do until I'll be really happy with my skills as a fighter, and even then there will always be room for improvement. Still, that doesn't change the fact that I know I'm good at what I do. I'm a strong person, a skilled fighter, and if I keep working on it then I'll be even better.

Life in Berk is hard, but it's the life we've all been given. It's worth fighting for, and it's worth preserving. Nothing will change that.

3. What do you think about killing? Is it necessary, abhorrent, entertaining? Do you/would you kill if necessary?
Of course killing is necessary. If you're a Viking, it's something you're going to have to do at some point. If we stepped back and did nothing whenever dragons attacked, all our livestock would be gone and we'd have died out ages ago. Where I'm from, you either kill or get killed. Holding back isn't an option, and you need to make sure you're ready for it when the time comes.

4. What is your most valuable possession?
My axe. You never know when something unexpected or unwelcome is going to pop up - better to have it on hand so I can be ready for anything.

5. What is the first thing of your life that you remember? Alternatively, what is the memory you hold most dear or important?
One of the most important memories I have is my first raid. I remember the heat, the noise, the chaos... and I couldn't do anything. I was too small to do anything. All I could do was just hide and feel helpless, but I'm not going to let that happen again.

I was too young to do anything back then, but I've learned from that. I'm stronger now. I'm not a child, anymore. No matter what happens, I'm not going to stand back and do nothing. I'm going to fight, and I'm going to win.
