Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

FANDOM CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our fandom applications.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Strengths:
Being an alicorn, or a "winged unicorn", Luna's got quite an arsenal of magical abilities at her disposal. On the pegasus front, she can fly (obviously) and control weather - particularly less pleasant forms such as thunderbolts, dark clouds and gusting winds. You'll also remember that she's the "princess of the night", and thus has the expected associations with the moon, stars, and darkness (although we don't see much at all with this after Twilight and the others manage to change her back). On the unicorn front, she can use magic. Her eyes will glow white when she's angry, she can make objects levitate, transform, or become animated, transform herself (this may be illusionary), shoot magical beams from her horn, and quite possibly "wink" in and out - a sort of short-distance teleportation common in the pony franchise. On the earth pony front, well, she can walk...?

(Given Luceti's 50% power rule, I would imagine that her transformation and weather-manipulating abilities would be severely downgraded, and that she'd only be able to manage one or two spells at a time. Something like this.)

Luna's also got a strong sense of responsibility, and she does have good intentions... although things don't usually always work out smoothly. For all her eyebrow-raising antics and yearning for her subjects' approval, she does want the best for other ponies, too. She hopes to stand among them rather than continue to evoke fear. So rather than allowing things to continue as they are, Luna personally goes to visit Ponyville to fix her marred image and allow them to get to know what she's truly like. Being in charge of bringing out the moon at night, and also re-appearing right on schedule during the longest day of the thousandth year, it can also be inferred that Luna is a very punctual individual.

Another good mark for her may be her ability to act quickly - when Pipsqueak falls into the apple-dunking barrel, she gallops up and plucks him out before he drowns.

Lastly... can we just say FUN? Luna found a common bond between herself and her subjects in playing games with them. AND SHE REALLY ENJOYED IT, even though she didn't quite get the concept of the spider-tossing game (she turned the bean bags into real spiders to try and gain extra points). She has no problem with trying out new things, and even when she was skeptical about Twilight Sparkle's attempts working, she went along and endured them.

Weaknesses:

Well, her rather explosive temper. It's definitely her biggest downfall, as when you upset her wrath, there's no fast or easy way to calm Luna down. And usually when she's in such a state she'll revert back to abusing CAPSLOCK and make hasty decisions without considering the consequences. After things began going downhill again during the Nightmare Night festival, she declared that the entire celebration would be canceled forever (when in actuality the little ponies enjoyed it as well as being scared). In the midst of widespread chaos and panic, she tends to hesitate and then try to solve things by raising her voice and giving commands. (Not always good.) On a related front, she's also very emotional. (Moody?) She's easily offended, but not immune from feeling waves of remorse and gratitude. For example, after her vocal lessons with Fluttershy, she grabs the other pony in an expression of delight and hugs her [a bit too] enthusiastically over both shoulders.

She's also not so good with her presentation. (Or about moderation.) She's awkward, and unused to the current way of things, which can make her seem rude, angry, even scary. A good example is when she was "thanking" Twilight for freeing her from the darkness. Twilight had to confirm whether the princess felt it was a good thing, and when Luna agrees LOUDLY, Twilight has to inform her that it sounded like she was yelling at her. This also means that somepony could tell her falsehoods about current trends and she'd have little way of knowing any better. Even when given sound advice about friend-making, there seems to be a running gag of Luna's attempts being initially misinterpreted by onlookers. Her traditional habits and unusual way of speaking may alienate potential friends.

Another thing is she can get a little touchy about her work. Luna wants to be accepted and loved, and she wants her work to be acknowledged and appreciated. Badmouthing the darkness and the nighttime around this pony would probably be a very bad idea if you have sensitive ears. Luna would no doubt have a thing or two to say about that.

Lastly, and this one is somewhat inferred - Luna would likely have a horrible time getting along on her own without help. Though the mechanics of her imprisonment are never dealt with in canon, she's a princess and likely has servants and the like to do everything for her. Everyday skills such as cooking (yes ponies can cook!), tidying up, and even common games and hobbies would be absolutely lost on her. She will have much to learn.

Samples

First Pony Sample:
GOOD CITIZENS OF PONYVILLE!

WHILE WE HAVE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED SHARING A WONDERFUL EVENING OF FRIGHTS, FUN, AND FREE CANDY WITH ALL OF YOU THIS YEAR, IT IS OUR DUTY TO REMIND YOU THAT NIGHTMARE NIGHT COMES BUT ONCE. WE DO NOT FEEL THAT PLAYING FURTHER TRICKS ON YOUR PRINCESS IS IN GOOD TASTE. IN FACT, WE WISH TO REQUEST THAT WHICHEVER PONY HATH FASHIONED US A SECOND PAIR OF WINGS COME FORTH IMMEDIATELY SO THAT THEY MAY BE REMOVED.

[An awkward pause, and then normally:] ...Thy goodwill and efforts have been noted, child, but we simply must insist. We would have preferred that thou didst ask our permission from the beginning. Though beautiful, thy work makes flying difficult. And... we do not think that thou hast got the fitting quite right.

Had we not duties to attend in Canterlot, such as bringing forth the moon you behold each night, we would have gladly welcomed a chance for further fellowship with our beloved subjects. In the meantime, we shall look forward to the glorious day that marks our next meeting, and we ask that thou wouldst promptly heed our request.

...We thank you.

Third Pony Sample:

Luna snorted in annoyance, blowing her forelock out of her eyes and turning her head about. This certainly wasn't Canterlot, nor Ponyville, nor any other place she had visited in Equestria, and it seemed to be inhabited by great numbers of strange, hairless creatures who walked about on two legs. Almost like birds, she thought initially, except they were too peculiar to be birds, and these wore clothes instead of feathers. They also tended to stare at her, which Luna found most unnerving. It had taken a great deal of effort to convince the villagers of Ponyville not to fear her, and she didn't feel she was quite ready to repeat the undertaking.

Well, it was of minimal importance. The greatest matter was finding a way to return to Canterlot Castle by sunset so that she could usher out the night. Her work may have been underappreciated, but Luna could not simply ignore her duties. And if her guards didn't have the decency to escort her, Luna felt sure she could find her own way back. She couldn't have wandered that far off-course, and besides, there was only so much land beyond the Everfree Forest.

Aiming her horn in the direction of the personalized journal she had found, Luna waited for her magic to lift it up to eye level and hold the pen steady. She would write to her sister and inform her of the situation. But as Luna tore out the top sheet and rolled it into a neat scroll, preparing to wink it to the castle, an unexpected thing happened. The letter refused to deliver itself.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Luna demanded with a scowl directed at the journal. "Dost thou find complaint with our writings? For surely our sister would not ignore us!" After several repeat attempts, Luna's scowl turned to a look of concern. There was little doubt in her mind that Celestia would accept any messages she had to send. So then, why did they fail to reach her?
