If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!
A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.
Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Megami tensei Wiki Article on Ryoji
Wiki article on Pharos
Wiki on Nyx Avatar, though this is less history and mostly just details of
Wiki on Death
**Special Notes! I am considerably more familiar with Minato's version of things. Although I've watched a lot of videos of P3P, I haven't actually played it and so haven't played Minako's version of things - only Minato's as shown by P3:FES. Therefore, although I will draw from extra personality shown in Ryoji's social link with Minako, I will be playing Ryoji as if he were from Minato's side of the story.
** Also, a little headcanon. Since when Ryoji appears, he seems to have no trouble more or less fitting in and making friends with students in his class, I assume he must have some sort of memories that are borrowed, in a sense, from Minato – given to him along just basic humanity. Otherwise, how would he have any sense of how to act or any working knowledge of how to be a student or how to flirt with girls?
Furthermore, there are a lot of details about how he goes about his day-to-day life that we are not privy to. Where does he live while he’s a student? How on earth did he get the appropriate paperwork in? What happened to him during the Dark Hour before he remembered everything? What on earth does he spend December doing? None of these questions are answered in the game, though I have some speculation and head canon on them.
Personality:
In order to fully understand Ryoji Mochizuki at the canon point I pull him from, it is first necessary to consider all the separate parts that comprise him. By understanding them separately, it is then easier to understand how they come to blur and blend together. The four different ‘personalities’ or aspects are as follows: Death/Himself as a pure Shadow, the boy who calls himself Pharos, Ryoji Mochizuki and Nyx Avatar.
Death. This is the form of his for which we have the least information. Since this is how he begins existence, and since really, he’s just pure shadow here – albeit a Shadow of the 13th Major Arcana, for which previously there had been no Shadows – it can be inferred that he likely behaved more or less the same as other shadows. In other words, he is a thing born from primarily human emotions and subject not so much to conscious will as to impulse and instinct. The only real hint we get of his behavior patterns as this, however, is in the beginning of the game, when Minato first calls forth the persona Orpheus, and Death rips its way out of Orpheus’ head to then destroy and presumably absorb the Magician Full Moon Shadow. This possibly indicates a strong – aggressive, even – desire to become whole again. And indeed, this very desire is likely the main way in which this shadow was able to subconsciously prod Minato to return to Iwatodai to begin with.
However, it should be noted that by the time we see this form visibly surface again, when Ryoji transforms into it in a last-ditch effort to convince Minato to kill him for reasons explained in history and elsewhere, whatever personality or impulses that Death might have had have been more or less subsumed by the stronger, fuller personality provided by the part of him which is human.
Pharos. An enigmatic, friendly and … strangely sort of cheerful boy who appears only to Minato during the Dark Hour (save for the final time he appears), Pharos is curious and a bit odd. But he is happy to make a friend, and he is quite willing to share with Minato bits and pieces of whatever he remembers about what is and what is to come. Because he is not yet complete, his memory of who and what he is is not complete, and it isn’t until after the 12th Full Moon Shadow is defeated and merges with him that he is complete and that he is able to leave Minato’s psyche to become wholly his own being again, as Ryoji Mochizuki.
Like with ‘Death’, Pharos is largely subsumed by Ryoji, which is… rather understandable, given that really, Pharos is just an immature form of Ryoji. You could almost look at It like if Ryoji were a normal person, Pharos would just be him as a child. Like any adult compared to how they were as a child, some things carry over in one form or another, and some things disappear – but importantly, the adult has memories from being that child.
Ryoji.
To most, Ryoji presents the face of a charming (though absolutely shameless) flirt, always cheerful and eager to try new things and make new friends. It seems like nothing – not even rejection from a lovely lady! – can get him down, and merrily, he laughs his way through life. With boundless energy, he enjoys life and encourages others to do the same, though his standards for what it means to enjoy life might not be universal. After all, one of his favorite activities is asking out and otherwise seeking to enjoy the company of cute girls! Or even just enjoying their cute looks, as (for example) he is certainly not above plotting with his friend Junpei to accidentally-on-purpose linger in the hot springs a little too long, into the girls only time. And he certainly is not above dragging other friends into such devious plots. (Though he is, perhaps, not the best at such plotting, as his enthusiasm nearly gets the better of him and alerts the girls to the boys’ presence.)
But to be fair, even if he is party to such plots, he’s also pretty honest and straightforward. He encourages Junpei, Minato and Akihiko that they should just come clean and apologize to the girls, and later on he remarks that sharing secrets is fun. Hiding minor things is just not his style. Life is meant to be shared! (… which means he’s probably not the person you should be, say, confiding your crush to. He won’t be able to resist bubbling it to them!)
Of course, life isn’t all about the ladies. Ryoji is also quite appreciative of the sheer beauty of the world. For example, he enjoys the view of the sun on the ocean, and espouses the beauty of Kyoto. Forming memories of beauty and happiness and getting to enjoy new experiences (especially with people he treasures) are important to him. Even if at the time he started being Ryoji Mochizuki he did not yet remember what he is, he still almost certainly had an unconscious sense that time was pressing.
But for all his value of life, his view of death is also pragmatic. All living things die, and it is simply something you must accept, no matter how cold that sounds…
After Aigis confronts him on the Moonlight Bridge and regains his memories, however, the lines of what defines him as Ryoji begin to blur, and it is here that we begin to see also a more vulnerable, sorrowful, lonely and guilty side to Ryoji. He does *not* want to fight. He does *not* want to be The Appriser and become one with Nyx, bringing death to humanity, because he likes humanity and greatly values his own humanity. And even if the time he got to spend was fairly short, he’s nonetheless quite grateful to have made friends and gotten to enjoy it as he has. He values having been able to laugh and cry and everything else that he otherwise never would have been able to do.
But he is also very sorrowful exactly *because* life itself is very precious to him. He does not want to see it end, but since it’s going to inevitably end anyway, he does not wish to see his friends suffer through it. He would rather they take the choice he gives them to end his life so that he can take away their memories of the Dark Hour and the coming Fall, so that they can live out their final days in peace, without the burden of knowing the end.
And he feels very guilty about having to be the cause of all of this – enough so that after multiple apologies, he just disappears for a month until the time has come for SEES to make their choice, presumably because he does not wish to bother them with his presence. And perhaps because he needs time himself to fully come to terms with what he is and what he must do.
By the time of December 31st, he is more collected than he was, no longer crying, though he is much more solemn and quiet than he was before memories returned. Still, there is no going back to quite the same innocent cheer of before, even if in Luceti, he will undoubtedly come to wear this cheer again.
Nyx Avatar.
This is, of course, what he finally becomes, and his personality as Nyx Avatar is best summarized as melancholy, regretful and detached. As he has become one with Nyx, though his humanity has left him with the regret and the sorrow that life must end, he no longer seems to feel the same emotional attachment – probably because Nyx herself is a neutral entity with no attachment one way or the other. Thus, primarily Nyx Avatar speaks in a mostly neutral tone – he is mostly just stating facts, after all.
He is regretful of what he is there to do – all the more so when SEES shows him their determination and will to live. He laments that more of humanity is not like them, for perhaps if it were, there would not be such despair and desire for death that was the source of his being created to summon Nyx to begin with.
And where does that leave him now?
Primarily just Ryoji, again – free to be as he chooses but with the weight of the knowledge of who and what he really is. As the barrier around Luceti prevents communication with anything outside, he clearly is no longer quite so much one with Nyx, but he retains a part of Nyx with him, as he is her avatar. This part of him gives him a clearer picture of fate and life and death – and it’s because he was defeated as Nyx Avatar and then was able to see the miracle Minato pulled off
(with the power of friendship! … and willpower)that he has gained a more content, hopeful outlook. But it is worth noting that since he has returned to being Ryoji after having been Nyx Avatar, and because he has all those memories and experiences, now, the lines between the different aspects of him have blurred. He may not have the same detachment that Nyx Avatar does, but he has the knowledge and certainly his outlook has been influenced by having been it, and it is always possible that it may surface again. And then, of course, there is always the potential that the inner part of him that is really just a Shadow may surface during moments of great danger – during a fight, for example.
2 of 3
Strengths:
Mental/Emotional: Perhaps ironically given that he is a personification of death, Ryoji actually places great value on life. Not so much on his own, but then again he sees his life as having brought suffering to others, and in any event, he knows he can’t really die. However, because of the humanity he has been given, he has a great love of life and for life. His sorrow and guilt over having to be the end of it brings him to tears.
Along with that, he does not like to see those he cares about suffer. He is willing, when he is able, to sacrifice his own well-being if he thinks it will ease the suffering of others, as seen in the choice he offers SEES to have Minato kill him as Ryoji. By being killed in this form, he would eliminate the Dark Hour and take away their memories of it, so that they could live their last few months in peace, without the suffering he thinks they would endure by living their last month, knowing they are in their last days.
He also has great respect for freedom and is willing to let people have time to think over decisions, as when he gives SEES a month to absorb what he tells them about The Fall and make their choice to fight to the end or to have a time of ignorant happiness before it all ends. Even if he might try six ways from Sunday to convince Minato to kill him, in the end he respects the choice made and does what he can to help prepare them.
In other circumstances (i.e. when he doesn’t think the end of the world is imminent and isn’t feeling guilty or sad over something), Ryoji is resiliently cheerful. While he can be made sad or worried (hey, exams are totally things to worry over
even if he winds up not taking them), usually he is quite upbeat and quick to laughter, which is a strength that keeps him from getting downtrodden over small things (like rejection from a girl). Also his shameless flirting with all the girls in the school is totally a strength – it demonstrates his complete lack of shame and a near complete lack of fear! ;)
…. And he has a strong (personal) working knowledge of Tarot!
Physical/Powers/etc.:
He is not human. He is a Shadow, but not an ordinary one. Rather, he is an amalgam of many lesser Shadows, transformed into The Appriser who both summons Nyx (though neither willingly nor in any way he has conscious control over – it’s just something his mere existence does) and ultimately becomes a part of Nyx in the form of Nyx’s Avatar. Nixing Nyx herself, he is the final boss of the game and consequently is actually quite powerful. A detailed list of what Nyx Avatar is capable of can be found on the page on it linked in the history section, and notably, since it is made of powerful shadows representing the first thirteen Major Arcana, it can switch between its apparent Arcana (and thus strengths and weaknesses), though its true Arcana is Death, and it is likely that in Luceti, it will only ever be Death, unless there’s some good reason for it to change.
Although he as Ryoji Mochizuki can die and he as Nyx Avatar can be defeated for a time in battle, it’s impossible to truly destroy him, because you cannot really destroy Death. And even if you were going to try to defeat him, he
has a lot of HP, and you can only deplete one bar at a timeis extremely durable. It should be noted that even in a human form, Ryoji can still access at least some of his power. It is unclear how much or what limitations there are to this, however, since the only time we really see him exercise his power in human form is when Aigis confronts him on the Moonlight Bridge. At this point, he is able to simply prevent any of her attacks from touching him. Perhaps he is projecting a form of Moonless Gown here? Or perhaps it is simply some unnamed ability to absorb and possibly rebound the energy Aigis puts into it. Either way, Aigis ends up breaking in the fight without doing any physical damage to Ryoji.
Luceti-nerfing? Clearly he can be killed (as much as anyone can in Luceti, at any rate). It’s just… probably harder to kill him than it is to kill an average human, especially if he’s in either his Death or Nyx Avatar forms. Also, there would be a general weakening of his power – the magic he can wield and his durability, etc. For a specific example, perhaps if he were to make use of the power of ‘Moonless Gown,’ it would either not be able to reflect everything or it would only be sustainable for very, very short amounts of time and require a lot of effort to do so. It probably would also not reflect things back just as strongly as they hit it, anymore.
Importantly, his presence in Luceti will *not* summon Nyx here, because of course the barrier around it prevents any communication with things outside of said barrier, and presumably the bulk of Nyx (besides the part that is Ryoji) is outside of the barrier.
On the subject of other forms, he retains the ability to shift between his human form and his shadow form at will, even if he’s extremely unlikely to exercise it because he likes being human, thank you very much. It is possible he may transform under certain conditions, however. For example, if someone asked to see what his true form was and he had no reason to deny them, or if danger were to draw near, and he wished to offer protection to others.
In addition, while theoretically he can also return to his Nyx Avatar state, as that is very much a part of him now, it’s an option he will never, ever willingly take unless, perhaps, he had no choice. But that is more obligation than willingness. But it probably takes quite a bit of effort to go from Ryoji to Nyx Avatar, and he’d likely be very drained (physically and emotionally) when he returned to being Ryoji so even if it were something he did do or was made to do, it is not something he could just lightly switch on and off.
Weaknesses:
Mental/Emotional: When it seems as though the end is inevitable, Ryoji despairs instead of hopes. Although perhaps seeing what Minato accomplishes with the Great Seal may teach Ryoji about having hope and a will to keep going, even when all seems lost, still it is not easy for him to move past inevitability and look for another option or avoid sinking into despair and especially guilt.
Even if it’s something he cannot actually control and cannot help, if something about him – such as his purpose of existence – brings pain and suffering to others, Ryoji will feel immense guilt. And really, he is more emotionally vulnerable than his normal cheer would let on, but this is in part because he’s still new to this whole living and being human thing. And when he comes to Luceti, he’ll be sorting out his thoughts and feelings about everything that happened and figuring out where to go as a person, which leaves him in a vulnerable state at present…
His over-enthusiasm when it comes to girls has gotten him into trouble a time or two, because let’s face it,
sadlynot all girls enjoy being hit on by him, nor do they appreciate being ‘accidentally’ spied upon in hot springs…But interestingly, as can be seen through his social link with Minako in her version of events, when he is really serious about a girl, he drops some of the cheer and the flirting and strives to be very sincere and honest. And he also admits that being alone scares him. And the fear of being alone is another emotional weakness (and quite possibly one of the reasons he is so flirtatious).
Also, he does not place great value on his own life and own existence. He knows he cannot truly die, anyway, so he is willing to be killed if by his death as Ryoji, he can ease or prevent the suffering of his friends. I speculate that it is because he sees himself as a cause of the suffering and mental pain of others that he disappears for the month of December, even though he is still at that point Ryoji. He wishes to be out of their sight, because he knows what he is and the knowledge he has imparted has upset them.
Also, rather than actively fighting his own fate, he simply resigns himself to it. Of course, whether it would have been possible for him to fight becoming Nyx Avatar is open for debate, but we’ll never know if it was possible, since he says it isn’t and thus doesn’t try.
Powers/Physical/etc.: As Ryoji Mochizuki, he’s not very strong physically, for all his durability. A human body is a human body, after all, and his is that of a skinny teenage boy.
His exact “elemental” weakness and whatnot varies with whatever Arcana he is embodying at a given moment, though most of the time he will theoretically default to Death, as that is his true Arcana.
The first time we see him use his power in human form against Aigis, he later collapses, but it is unclear if his exhaustion is from the battle, from the shock of the returned memories or both. Still, it can be assumed that although he has a lot of energy, it is not boundless, and he can’t really defend himself if he’s unconscious.
… but honestly, Death doesn’t really… have much in the way of physical weaknesses per se…. being the eternal anthropomorphic personification of part of the tarot deck and all…
3 of 3 - have some samples~ ♥
First Person:
Good morning, Luceti! And a special good morning to all the beautiful ladies out there who make this place *sparkle*! [ :D ]
So~ I happened to be wandering through the Item Bazaar today, and I found a certain special deck of cards! [A brief flourish of the very deck he is speaking of] For those of you who’ve never seen it before, it’s called a Tarot deck, and in its cards lie the answers to many of life’s questions. The cards tell the story of life’s journey!
And if anyone is interested, I would be more than happy to do a reading or two! Or answer any questions you might have about the journey of the Tarot, since so many people here have answered all sort of questions for me!
It’s all just for fun, of course! Who knows? It might reveal your destiny or lead you to that certain *special* someone! [ ;) ]
So how about it? After all, the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed!
Third Person:
When Ryoji opens his eyes, he’s staring blearily at a few blades of dead grass poking out of the slowly melting snow, and he can taste the damp cold in his mouth. He blinks slowly, somewhere between going back to sleep and wondering what happened. It’s so cold, and his mind is all fuzzy, and it’s impossible to really think about anything, except sleep. He shivers a little, and dimly he recalls someone telling him once to be sure to wear a coat when it’s cold outside (though something about the memory seems oddly detached, and he wonders if it’s really his), and that convinces him to start to sit up. However, it’s the stabbing pain radiating from his back that truly wakes him up and gets him to look around, as he reaches back to feel if he’s hurt.
But then his fingers brush feathers, and he gasps as suddenly, he remembers everything. All that he is and was, and the miracle, and smiling as Tartarus crumbled away beneath him, and he dissolved into the night and into a nice, long sleep behind a shining seal. A sound halfway between laughter and sobbing falls from his lips, and he grins.
“You – you really did it.” He rubs at his eyes, and laughter bubbles up. “The power of The Universe – no, the power of life – is really something, isn’t it?”
Ryoji sits there, basking in the rush of emotions until he’s gradually distracted by how wet the thin linen pants he’s wearing are getting and how much he is shivering in the cold. (Snow’s sure pretty to look at and fun to play in, but he’s not sure he’ll be sitting in it again in the future. Or sleeping on it. Definitely a bad idea.) Teeth chattering, he finally stumbles to his feet, hugging his arms to his chest and looking around. And amid the snow and trees and brown grass, he sees a familiar lump of yellow and black peaking out of a partially-rotten tree stump nearby.
“Scarf!”
In an instant, Ryoji is there, pulling his clothes out and looping the long stretch of fabric around his face and neck several times before fumbling with his shirt. But of course, now he encounters yet another problem and nearly drops the shirt again with a yelp.
“Ow! Wh—oh! The wings! …. Wait, I shouldn’t… have any—” Twisting around and attempting to stretch the feathery things out so he can see them, Ryoji winds up almost chasing them around in a circle before he finds a good position and, because obviously it seems like the best idea, he pokes them again. “Aa-Ow! Why do they hurt so much? What--?”
A few more minutes are spent staring and gingerly flexing them before the shivering gets to him again, and he slowly resumes putting clothing back on, though the shirt winds up on backwards, and he doesn’t even bother with the suspenders to keep his pants up, especially as he gets further distracted by the book thing sitting beneath them. But he can’t make heads or tails of what it is or why it’s there – or even why he’s here, now that he thinks about it.
“Huh.” Blinking, Ryoji hugs the book to his chest and peers around again. “I – guess I’ll have to explore and find out! And maybe find someplace warm, because brrr! Even Mitsuru’s execution wasn’t this cold!”
