Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Part 2

[personal profile] abjurer 2013-01-03 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Most people's first impression of Max is that he's very laid back and casual, with a certain dry and sometimes sarcastic sense of humour. This shows in both his attitude and his form of dress. Even while working and performing exorcisms, he is usually found wearing jeans and a shirt. Nothing particularly scruffy, but rarely anything formal either. He's casual and friendly with most everyone, even authority figures such as the politicians and diplomats that his brothers work with. This is not always in his best interests but he does it anyway because at his core is a streak of pure stubbornness. Once Max has decided upon a course of action or made a decision, then he is likely to stick to it to the bitter end, even to his detriment. This can be both positive and negative; he is extremely loyal to people once they're earned his trust, for example, he is willing to bend the very fabric of reality to protect Brendan, despite the danger it poses to himself, his family and possibly the world. He also stands up to the entire Sidhe court in his actions to protect Brendan. On the other hand, this stubbornness does get him into trouble. He is extremely reluctant to admit when he has made a mistake and will often follow a course of action even when he knows that it's a bad idea, just to avoid admitting that he was wrong or asking anyone else for help.

This inability to admit failure ties into a certain insecurity that possesses. All his life he has had incidents of being looked down upon, whether real of perceived; being seen as a lesser mage because of his magical focus, for not going into a powerful job like his brothers. In his mind at least, people view him as as a failure, as lesser and (in his darker moments) as a freak. In response to this, he has developed a certain attitude generally refusing to acknowledge authority for the sake of authority, relying on himself and no-one else, and generally pushing himself to be the best at whatever he does to make sure that no-one can think of him as in any way below them. For this reason, he also hates being underestimated

This can come across as either confidence or arrogance depending on the situation. Max definitely has confidence in spades. He is good at what he does, possibly the best and he knows it. This is vitally important to him for more than just keeping up appearances. Because so much of the magic in his world, and Max's power especially, comes from belief, he will very rarely allow anyone to see when he feels insecure or uncertain. This confidence however can bleed into arrogance. He knows exactly how good he is, exactly how much better he is at what he does than most people and it can make him cocky, even condescending to people.

He certainly has a certain belief that he is above the law. He's grown up in pretty privileged circumstances; wealthy family with lots of connections to nobility and politics, with several members having prominent places in history, and not all of them are human or bound by human laws. While he isn't likely to go out on a crime spree, he does run a business of flexible legality, finding and acquiring magical objects and artifacts, and he isn't always scrupulous about finding out what his clients are going to use them for, although he is pretty careful about making sure that they at least aren't going to anyone inexperienced.

On the other hand, this disregard for the letter of the law does mean that he's also willing to stand up for certain lost causes. He has no qualms about taking Brendan in, despite it bringing him into conflict with the Sidhe, and he has been known to surreptitiously help out people with magic related problems who cannot turn to the law. At heart, he is a kind person who wants to do what is right, even if his methods are a little skewed. His desire to train as an exorcist comes from his need to never be helpless again, to never be unable to help someone he cares about when there is something that he is capable of doing.

There is a certain part of him that is scared of himself and what he is capable of. He is the only person in his family (apparently) who has ever shown the ability to channel spirits that he has, and definitely the only person with his ability to warp reality on such a scale. After the first incident of such, he was extremely shaken, scared even, of what he was capable of, and because of that, he ignored that power, trying to pretend that it didn't exist. Of course, this meant that he never gained much control over it which just makes the fear worse. While he is friendly, he isn't someone who has a lot of friends. To a certain extent, he's closed himself off from most people, afraid of what he could potentially do, and afraid of being rejected as a freak or evil once more. He's a little wary of forming close attachments, especially after his argument with Brendan and being accused of being complicit with the Sidhe, because damn, that hurt. He keeps a certain amount of distance from people, although he's not averse to casual relationships and brief flings. Quite the opposite; Max is fairly gregarious when left to his own devices. He can be pretty charming when he wants to be, as well as being something of a flirt towards both men and women.

Max is very intelligent and very well educated. He's grown up around magic his entire life and been given a thorough grounding in it's use and is always interested in learning more, displaying a definite thirst for knowledge of all kinds. He's creative and fairly cunning, using both to great effect in his use of magic; why attack someone when you can just scare them off with monsters in the dark and make them believe that it's all in their own heads? And admittedly, a certain dark part of himself likes seeing people afraid of him. It's better than scorn or disgust or pity. He can also be fairly ruthless when he has cause to be, using every trick he knows to get what he wants, especially if what he wants is to protect someone.

He's usually slow to anger, and remains cool under pressure, preferring to use his wits to avoid conflict rather than charging in in a rage. Certain things however are guaranteed to get a rise out of him; call him a hedgewitch or similar and things are likely to get unpleasant very quickly. He hates being talked down to and while it might not send him into a rage, it will get his hackles up, making him prickly and sarcastic.

If he doesn't like something, you're likely to find out about it. Vocally. He makes his displeasure known, be it dumbasses trying magic too advanced for them, the latest Sidhe actor being swooned over, or the political situation in Europe. Silly things mainly though; if something is really getting to him, he will do his best to hide it. Might not always succeed, but he'll try.

He is staunchly atheist despite knowing full well that gods and spirits like that exist and has communed with them on occasion. He just doesn't believe in them, mainly because that would give them some kind of power over him, something that he refuses to do.

Strengths:
<Physical: Max is a relatively fit young man of average height and build. He's generally healthy, no disabilities or illnesses. He's often found lugging boxes and furniture around his shop so he's got a decent bit of strength from that. He's also got a few advantages because of his not quite human nature. He's a little more resilient than a normal human might be; he's more likely to survive a grievous wound, for example, although it'll still leave him very dangerously close to death. He heals slightly faster, although not fast enough that it would really stand out as bizarre. His senses are slightly sharper, especially his hearing, but again, nothing beyond what a particularly lucky human would have.

Mental: Most obviously, Max is an exceptionally powerful mage and has been highly trained in the use of his magic. His natural abilities run towards creating wards and barriers to protect things or seal them away, using thread and weaving as a focus. He protects his shop with a magical barrier which ensnares people who intrude; initially it will feel as though they're being watched, and if that isn't enough to deter them, will continue until they're trapped in their own nightmares. He's capable of blocking the tracking spell embedded in Brendan's skin and hiding him from any Sidhe who see him. His magic, at it's most potent, is also capable of using a ward to essentially wipe someone from existence, rewriting reality so that it's as if they never existed at all, with only a few people capable of similar magic able to sense that there ever was a difference.

He is also particularly sensitive to spirits, able to see and interact with the souls of the dead and channel them to speak and act through him. He's trained as an exorcist, able to banish them from the living world and send them on when they become problematic.

Max is very strong mentally. He is confident in his abilities, and with good reason; it's very difficult to undermine him or make him feel insecure in such a way. Along with this, he has great strength of will; when he makes a decision, there's little you can do to change his mind, and he will do what he thinks is right even when opposed. This strength of will is especially important because so much of his magic relies upon him believing in it's power and being able to hold that belief even when under attack. For example, he holds off a Sidhe warrior in a name battle by forcing the warrior to bend to Max's belief in the more genteel and gentle nature of the Sidhe, rather than the furious, vengeful side. All this using only his strength of will. He's very intelligent and has had a very good education. He reacts well under pressure, able to think quickly in order to counter threats; spirits are unpredictable and he has to be able to out think and out maneuver them with no time for planning. He's seen some terrible things, been possessed by spirits and wiped a friend out of existence and still come out of it with his good humour and open nature in tact, so he's also fairly resilient.

Emotional: Max has grown up with a stable and happy family life which has left him fairly healthy emotionally. He's pretty laid back, usually able to disarm disagreements using diplomacy rather than arguments or violence. While he's usually fairly open, he does have good control over his emotions, able to mask most of what he feels with amusement or polite interest. Since part of his magic involves him being able to manipulate emotions subtly, for example, making an enemy feel fear or believe that he is stronger than he appears, he's also fairly well versed at understanding emotions and what cause them. He knows his own feelings very well, and is generally comfortable with his own feelings.

Weaknesses: (Physical, mental and emotional)

Physical: Because he isn't entirely human, he can never get a blood transfusion and sometimes medicines that most people would be fine with make him sick. He's just about as susceptible to illnesses and injuries as any human would be. While he is in decent condition, he's not an athlete or particularly strong or fast. He has virtually zero physical combat skills and has never trained with any weapons so when it comes to physical fights, he's probably going to be on the losing end.

Mental:
His powers are for the most part defensive or passive, so while he can protect himself, it's difficult for him to eliminate a threat and if someone is strong enough to break through his wards, he's almost as vulnerable as anyone else. He's vulnerable to spirits which are capable of possessing him and controlling his actions. While he's normally strong enough and well trained enough to stop them, more powerful spirits can be a challenge and the experience is particularly unpleasant for him.

Max knows he's good at what he does, unfortunately, this confidence can often bleed into arrogance. He has a tendency to overestimate his strength and his abilities, which can lead to him taking on more than he can handle. He's also kind of a know it all; he knows exactly how smart he is and this means he can come across as condescending at times. He also thinks that he is capable of solving any problem thrown his way, refusing to accept that there isn't always an answer. He'll throw himself at a problem repeatedly, even to the point of putting himself and other people in danger, rather than admit defeat or ask for help. Because he ties so much of himself into his wards and magic, he constantly runs the risk of backlash; if they're damaged, it's quite possible that it would hurt his mind or be turned against him. His use of his magic to erase his possessed friend from existence also left a kind of mental wound which has never healed; it makes him susceptible to psychic interference if he ever doesn't have a ward around himself. It's also quite obvious to those with the ability to sense it, and can be a draw to darker forces.

Emotional: While Max is confident, he does have a few issues which are particularly tender. He feels like the black sheep of his family in many ways; no one else in his family has ever been able to interact with the dead which makes him feel like a freak at times, and while he enjoys his job and is proud of what he's done, he hasn't achieved the success that his brothers have. It was always expected that he would join the diplomatic service or get involved in politics like his older brothers, and while his family are supportive, he does feel inadequate in comparison at times. Being called a 'hedgewitch' or implying that he's lesser because of his powers is kind of a hot button for him, something almost guaranteed to make him lose his temper. He takes defeat hard and will blame himself for failures, even if there's little that he could have done to prevent them. He takes Brendan's murder of the Changeling as a personal failing of his own. While he's friendly, he's a little wary of actually having friends. His life is dangerous and strange and he isn't too keen on putting others at risk. He's also been ostracised before, by people who are afraid of him and his magic. He's also a bit of a bleeding heart at times; he can and has allowed himself be persuaded into doing some unwise things to help other people and it doesn't always end well for him.
