Applications
PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!
Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!
PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.
If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.
The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.
Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.
If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!
A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.
Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Physical--
Stephen is very physically fit and possessed of good stamina, capable of (as he does on the Galapagos Islands) walking ten miles only days after performing surgery on himself to remove a bullet from his chest.
Stephen has a crackshot aim with a pistol. He demonstrates this ability in Post-Captain by setting up playing cards and shooting the heads of the court cards and by proving himself able to toss a coin in the air, shoot, and send the bullet through the center.
Stephen is an expert sword fighter, having been trained as a duelist at Trinity College in Dublin. He holds off several opponents in the hold of Acheron with a sword in his hand and sweeping, trained moves.
Mental--
Stephen studied in Catalonia, Ireland, and France, and he is a certified physician. He was trained in the Classics before medicine and has read a vast array of books about natural history as well.
Stephen is a polyglot. He can fluently read and speak English, Spanish, Catalan, French, Latin, Irish, and Portugese. He is able to understand Greek, Malay, Arabic, and Urdu well enough to make due in their respective countries.
Stephen is very subtle. Jack must half order him to speak plainly, rather than hinting at a point when Jack asks for an opinion. He makes nuanced comments, such as, after a vicious attack from the Acheron, "Perhaps [the Acheron's captain] was looking for us."
Emotional--
While a man of science, Stephen also possesses a conviction to his faith. He prays a Rosary, and he recites the Lord's Prayer faithfully at every burial at sea. He does not follow the conventional teachings of the Catholic Church of his time, but he does consider himself to be Catholic.
Once Stephen has fixed himself to a cause (or person), he does not betray. Though opposed to the uprising of the United Irishmen, he did not inform on them and considers himself still among them. Even at the worst of times, such as when Jack and Stephen were ready to duel over a woman, a bad wound on Jack is all it takes for Stephen to compassionately urge him into his care and the whole matter is dropped.
Stephen is an affectionate man, unreserved with basic friendship. He converses with all and quickly adopts people into what seems to be an inner circle, though they are often unaware of how much he is holding back from them. He treats his friends well, helping Jack when his financial situation becomes dire more than once, and quickly coming to use endearments.
Weaknesses:
Physical--
Stephen is a small man. He stands only 5'6" and weighs 9 stone (126 lbs). This makes him easily overpowered by someone larger than he is.
Stephen still suffers from the injuries to his body by the torture he underwent. He flexes his fingers often, the joints troubling him when he goes to play his cello. While he is usually quite able nonetheless, there are moments where he is in genuine pain from the old wounds.
While Stephen is not addicted to laudanum, he relies on it more than he should to sleep. It is a surprise to him, in Post-Captain, when he manages to not only fall asleep but sleep for nine hours without having taken any laudanum.
Mental--
Stephen often overestimates himself physically. While able to walk ten miles across an island in the Galapagos, he was not able to make a quick return and was forced to be carried. He pushes himself to his limit, forgetting to eat and sleep quite often.
Emotional--
Despite his appearance of friendship, Stephen holds himself at a great distance from most people. He does not let others see the true him, or the many sides that he often hides. He distrusts most people on more than a surface level, and he is constantly evaluating those around him, aware of his precarious position as a spy and how many people might be a threat to him.
Stephen has a temper. It takes a lot to rile him, but once he is riled, he does not contain himself. Whatever he thinks, he says. Often, Jack Aubrey is at the receiving end of these tirades (though Stephen has them returned, more often than not). He will go on about the inhumanity of flogging, a common Naval punishment, or say that the men will gladly give up their share of prize money for a cup of clean water after the ship has been becalmed too long.
Stephen is obsessed over a woman named Diana Villiers. He played the part of a lover to her once, at the same time as Jack Aubrey. The two men clashed viciously, almost to the death, over her affections. While she does not consent to marry Stephen (by the point at which the character is taken from for Luceti), she toys with his affections, making sure that he remains eager for her attention.
Stephen is deeply attached to Jack Aubrey. For Jack Aubrey, he would sacrifice anything. He asks Sir Joseph for a favour, something he has never done before, to see Jack bailed out of prison (for debt), made captain of a ship more than once, and given a commission on a task that should have made Jack a wealthy man. If someone truly wanted to hurt Stephen and knew him well, they would need only make the target Jack Aubrey.
