Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Kitty Pryde || X-Men Evolution

History: Character Profile on Wiki
For the first thirteen years of her life, Kitty Pryde lived as a relatively normal girl growing up in Deerfield, Illinois. She had kind and caring parents, did well in school, and fretted over things like boys, clothes, and good hair days.

That is, until she started getting the headaches. At first she and her parents wrote it off as nothing. Then came the night Kitty had a dream of falling and woke up on her basement floor. Terrified and confused, she panicked after realizing she had literally fallen straight through her bedroom floor. And this was definitely no bad dream. The evidence was clear - above their heads, part of Kitty’s bed sheets dangled ominously through the basement ceiling.

The next day, Kitty’s parents were visited by Professor Xavier and Jean Grey, eager to help Kitty understand and learn more about her powers. At first, her parents wanted nothing to do with it. They were determined to forget the whole thing ever happened. But in the end, thanks to Xavier’s persistence and Jean’s empathy, both Kitty and her parents were able to make the right choice, and Kitty decided to move Xavier’s Institute for Gifted Youngsters. With a little training, she soon became an official member of the X-men, taking on the codename Shadow Cat.

At the Institute, Kitty was introduced to mutants just like her. There she learned to be more accepting of people different from her, to control her powers more effectively, and was trained in combat scenarios. Kitty quickly formed a family-like bond with the other mutants at the Institute, and with their help managed to maintain a fairly normal life as a teenage girl and high school student along with her life and training as a mutant.

Everything seemed to be coming together perfectly. That is, until Wolverine is captured by a government organization that the X-men believed to have dealings with the X-men’s archenemy Magneto, and the X-men were forced to team up with a gang of rival mutants called the Brotherhood to search for him. Drawn by his power signature to the facility where he’d been held, they stumbled upon a laboratory facility for a new anti-mutant government program called the Sentinels. The Sentinels are essentially oversized mechas programmed to seek and destroy any detected mutants they find based on their unique genetic signature. They soon discovered the researchers had been using Wolverine as a test subject for their new technology.

When they arrived outside the facility, the team is met by Magneto’s newest forces, and a battle erupts in the streets of New York. The mutants are forced to use their powers in broad daylight in front of an innumerable amount of eyewitnesses in order to fight off the threat. Thus, their cover as mutants was blown. Live TV footage of the fight aired across the country, exposing them to the world. Meanwhile, Magneto continued to manipulate events by unleashing the Sentinel onto the city, adding even more fuel to the fire of the very public fight. This results in several of the Brotherhood and X-men’s capture.

Luckily, the fight ends with Magneto’s defeat at the hands of Brotherhood member the Scarlet Witch, and the remaining X-men (including Kitty) are able to flee the scene and fly back to the Institute, only to find it completely destroyed.

After that, all known mutants were forced to live in exile. The incident with Magneto and the Sentinels had thrown the entire world into a state of anti-mutant paranoia. Soldiers patrolled the streets and the media ran rampant with scare tactics and conspiracy theorists.

Eventually the captured mutants were able to escape the government holding facilities and rejoin the others. Kitty and her friends and comrades were forced to take shelter in an isolated cave not far from the ruins of the Institute, watching the panic and hatred grow from a tiny portable TV.

It didn’t take long for the government to find them, tagging on the heels of Rogue and Wolverine. There, they were forced to retreat instead of engaging the government choppers attacking them, trying to avoid further tarnishing their public image as dangers to society.

Despite the X-men’s efforts to persuade the government and media, mutants like the unstoppable Juggernaut continued to rampage throughout the country, adding more fuel to the fire and providing more ammunition for the rising fear and hatred of the general public.

Kitty Pryde || X-Men Evolution

[personal profile] goesthruphases 2012-09-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Luckily, the X-men were able to stop the Juggernaut on live TV and prove to the people that there are good mutants in the world, using their abilities to protect people from renegade mutant threats. After that, the President of America announced that the X-men were cleared of all accusations, and that he acknowledges that not all mutants are a danger. The X-men were living proof of the exception to the rule.

After that, the X-men occupied themselves with rebuilding the Institute and establishing a new sense of normalcy living in the public eye. But fear and paranoia still burbled under the surface. Anti-mutant hate crimes began to rise, and the kids at school tried their best to make life Hell for Kitty and her friends. Still, the X-men stuck together, stood up for one another, and continued on with their lives the best they could.

The experience with Juggernaut served as a coming of age landmark for Kitty and the other younger X-men. After proving themselves as capable protectors of human kind, they had earned their right to be depended on during full-scale missions. One of Kitty’s first missions as a full-fledged X-man was dealing with Apocalypse, the strongest known mutant to have ever lived.

Kitty was sent down into the mutant’s tomb to scout the area, and though the place was pretty creepy, it seemed safe enough, so she opened the stairwell to let everyone else in. As soon as they arrived, they were attacked by giant stone guardians, and the team was forced once again to fight side-by-side with the likes of Magneto and his newest cronies. But they had a common goal – to stop Apocalypse before he awakened and destroyed the world as they know it.

The team fought bravely, and managed to defeat the guardians after much ado, but despite their efforts, they didn’t reach Apocalypse in time. A brainwashed Rogue had already been forced to awaken him by giving him all her stolen power, and the infamous mutant reached full-power once again.

As he made his departure, they try to stop him, only to be mowed down effortlessly by Apocalypse’s incredible power. Everyone was knocked unconscious or subdued, and Apocalypse left to exact his plans of destruction. But both the X-men and Magneto’s team weren’t willing to give up. They incessantly hunted for answers, trying to relocate Apocalypse and find ways to stop his plans.

During that time, Kitty became a valuable resource as Xavier collected information on Apocalypse’s activity, where she was able to phase through an otherwise impenetrable dome of energy enveloping an ancient Mayan pyramid where Apocalypse dwelled. But it soon became apparent that no one would be strong enough to stop Apocalypse themselves. Even Magneto was easily overpowered despite his efforts, and was presumed dead after his defeat.

So until they could come up with a plan, life went mostly back to normal. Or, well, as normal as life at the Institute could be. But after everything they’ve been through, the kids were happy to spend their time blowing off steam and just being kids. It’s during this time that Kitty had yet another life-changing experience.

During a trip to a canyon soon to be made a reservoir, Wolverine takes Kitty and the other X-kids up for dome dirt biking along the trails surrounding the gorge. But driving a four wheeler wasn’t quite as fun as Kitty had been expecting, and was soon lagging far behind. Once Rogue got bored of waiting up for her, she struck out ahead, leaving Kitty alone on the trail. Little did she know that as she was struggling, Kitty had steered the four wheeler down the wrong path. The moment she was starting to get the hang of it, a rock fall caused her to veer off the trail, sending her plummeting into the gorge.

When she came to, a shadow was looming over her, pulling her away just in time to avoid getting crushed by more falling rocks. The girl’s name was Danielle, and that day she was Kitty’s guardian angel. Quickly they identified each other as mutants, and an instant bond was formed.

Danielle was soon taken to the Institute and introduced to Professor Xavier, who welcomed her with open arms. But there was something not quite right about Danielle. Her psychic abilities were paired with a deeply disturbed mind, and the first night she spent at the Institute her powers ran rampant, giving many of the sleeping mutants horrible nightmares.

But when Kitty woke up the next morning, there was no sign of Danielle anywhere. It was like she’d completely vanished, and no one in the Institute even remembered her ever being there. Xavier told her it was just a dream brought on by the accident she’d had the day before, but Kitty refused to believe it. Her experience with Danielle was way too real, and now it was all she could think about. She filled her dreams and plagued her with what seemed to the others as hallucinations, speaking to Kitty over the telephone, begging for help.

Kitty couldn’t rest until she found her and saved her from whatever trouble she was in. With her determination, she managed to persuade Kurt to teleport her to Danielle’s hometown of Dark Hollow so she could search for answers. There, they found Danielle’s grandfather who informed them that Danielle disappeared into the canyons over two years ago.

Still, Kitty refused to give up on her friend. So she and Kurt trekked down to the quickly filling gorge and Kitty risked her own life to phase through the ground where she believed Danielle must be trapped. Under ground she finds a cavern, and inside, Danielle herself sleeping in suspended animation but still very much alive.
With the help of the other X-men, they manage to get Kitty and Danielle out of the cavern before it’s completely submerged. Danielle is then taken to the Institute’s infirmary where she has only Kitty’s faith, bravery, and determination to thank for saving her life.

Kitty Pryde || X-Men Evolution

Personality:

Despite her ability, Kitty remains very much your average teenage girl. Her experiences with the X-men have changed little about her bright and optimistic personality. She’s a friendly girl, occupying herself with going to school, hanging out with friends, thinking about cute boys, going to parties, and being vain, as most teenage girls are.

Though, she doesn’t always fit in. Back at her old school, she was bullied for being an overachiever, and later on she gets flack for being a mutant. But Kitty likes school, even if she might pretend to be an airhead sometimes, she’s pretty damn smart.

Although she’s bright, she’s not obscenely smart. Most of her intelligence comes from a passion for learning rather than natural talent, and she works hard for her good grades. Early on she tends to do poorer in classes like gym, which was supposedly the only class she wasn’t acing at her old school in Deerfield. And sometimes when she gets tired or distracted, any accidental phasing can prove disastrous for any technology she’s working with. Computers just don’t like her, even if she understands them enough to do things like run face recognition scans. She loves reading and writing both in and out of school, and does well despite some problems with bullying. Sometimes she can stress herself out with worrying about her grades, going to great lengths to do well on tests, so it’s obvious she cares and wants to do well, but she isn’t the kind of person to just skate by on natural ability. Not that she’d ever want to. She’d rather have her nose in a book or on her computer in her free time, and even sneaks past her own father to go to school the morning after her powers manifested.

Even though the kids at Bayville still tease her like they did in Deerfield, there’s one thing about Kitty that’s definitely changed since she joined the X-men – she has a spine. Though she may not go out of her way to chew someone out most of the time, she does have the confidence to roll her eyes and walk away, or counter taunts with a snide remark when provoked. Still, more often than not, she’ll walk away from a conflict instead of taking abuse or dealing it out. If it’s not important, she’d rather just end things before they get bad, but not without giving her aggressor a heavy dose of attitude as she does so.

This sometimes tempts more confrontational people to step in and fight her battles for her. Someone with a tendency to be more hotblooded, like Scott for example, often jumps in with their own two cents to defend her. During these situations, Kitty just watches from the sidelines, unhappy that a fight’s broken out, and sometimes adding her opinion, but usually not bold enough to step in and end it herself. But that doesn’t mean she won’t stick up for her friends. If she sees someone being bullied, she’ll step right in and come to that person’s aid if she thinks she stands a chance of helping. And she’s definitely not afraid to try to be the voice of reason if somebody’s taking things too far.
But this doesn’t mean she can’t be passionate. When there’s a job to be done, Kitty will stop at nothing to do it. And while she may let her emotions take over, she has no problem pushing them to the side when it’s time to get serious. This makes her a very unshakably determined person with incredible focus and belief in what she feels is right.

In the beginning, out of all the X-men recruits, Kitty had to do the most adjusting. So many of the X-men have had rough lives, came from broken homes, or have tragic backstories. Then there’s Kitty, the normal girl who never had to worry about much more than what she was gonna wear the next day before all this happened. Because of this, she tended to be the most openly wary of some of the stranger aspects of the team, judging things heavily by appearance. Nightcrawler, for example, disturbed her greatly in the beginning of the series. But as they got to know each other, Kitty began to accept Kurt for who he is, judging him by his personality instead of what he looked like. In time, they became very close, and Kitty learned to be more accepting of people like him.

Now, Kitty’s harder to surprise, and she’s much more considerate of people’s feelings. Though she’s still very much a girlie-girl, and if she thinks something’s gross, she’s gonna flip out about it. If it’s a person, she’ll be much more patient than she was before, getting to know them better before passing judgment.

However, like most kids her age, she’s very susceptible to peer pressure. She just wants to fit in and do the “cool” thing. And even though she’s fairly level-headed, she can make some pretty bad judgment calls. She’s easily persuaded by things that sound good in theory – like throwing a house party with her friends at the Institute while the Professor is away, or buying a hat that supposedly focuses your brain waves so she could do better on a test – that usually turn out bad in the end. But Kitty’s young, and even though she’s very bright and intuitive, someone at her age is bound to make mistakes. The good thing is Kitty usually learns from her mistakes and never makes them twice.

Kitty is also incredibly observant. A lot of the times she likes to have some time to herself to just think about the world and people around her, which gives her very good insight into people’s motivations and behavior. People interest Kitty, and she likes watching them go about their lives from the sidelines.

Overall, Kitty is a very well-balanced girl. Her life with the X-men and her identity as a normal teenager coincide almost seamlessly despite other people’s judgment. And though she enjoys sitting back and pondering the world around her, she still loves taking charge, having a good time, and living life to the fullest.

Kitty Pryde || X-Men Evolution

[personal profile] goesthruphases 2012-09-02 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Strengths:

[Physical]
Physically, Kitty is very athletic thanks to her training with the X-men. She’s quick and nimble within normal human limitations. Her strongest physical attribute is her phasing ability. This enables her to pass through any solid object, be it a wall or a person, and can even bring people or objects with her through the phase. Because of this power she’s nearly impossible to catch and is able to slip out of pretty much every type of bond. She can easily dodge projectiles or blows by just letting them pass through her, or short out computers and pieces of machinery by manipulating their molecules as she moves through them.

[Mental]
Kitty is a very innovative thinker. In battle, she’s come up with her own fighting style that uses her phasing ability to its fullest potential, not only to help herself, but her teammates as well. Along with that, she loves to write and reflect on the world around her. It’s a testament to her intelligence and intuition, as well as her ability to be highly observant.

Though she’s intelligent, she’s not unnaturally so. She likes books and school, and just finds the world – especially the people in it – fascinating. She gets good grades and has an entire episode that details her perceptions of the people around her. For the most part, her observations were spot-on.

[Emotional]
Emotionally, Kitty is confident, but not overconfident. She can stand up for herself in an argument if need be, but not usually enough to add more fuel to the fight. She has high self-esteem, which bubbles over into her bright personality. She loves talking and learning about people and making new friends.

She also has a very good moral code. If someone is doing something she finds morally wrong, she’ll definitely speak out about it and try to stop it the best she can, or call for help when she knows she can’t do enough on her own.

Kitty is also brave to a fault due to her strong sense of compassion paired with her phasing ability. When Logan went on a rampage due to a microchip messing with his brain, Kitty was determined to help him snap out of it. She insisted on approaching him even though he was violently mentally unstable, continuing to talk to him even after he made several attempts to attack her. Kitty refused to back down until Nightcrawler forcibly teleported her away.

Weaknesses:

[Physical]
Though Kitty is agile, she does have a tendency to be a little clumsy at times, especially when she’s distracted. If she’s being chased, she sometimes falls and has to scrabble away to regain her footing. In her old school back at home, she was teased for PE being the only class she’s not acing, and she obviously struggles with the long jump. This has much improved thanks to training with the X-men, but because of her ability, she’s given a bit of a crutch, so she doesn’t have to be the most physically skilled person out on the battlefield.

She’s also not the best physical fighter, mostly because her phasing ability gives her little need to defend herself from physical blows. Instead, she has her own fighting style tailored to her ability. She does know some basic self-defense thanks to training with Wolverine, and can definitely throw some solid punches and kicks. She’s just not the strongest one of the bunch when it comes to that sort of thing.

[Mental]
Even though Kitty is highly observant, she does have her moments of distraction. Sometimes it’s a friend on the battlefield in need of help, or just getting overwhelmed by having to phase through too many objects at once. If she loses focus, her ability is compromised, or she’ll make poor judgment calls like phasing through an object flying towards her, only for it to pass through and hit the teammate behind her.

And though she has good intuition, she still often goes against her gut and does whatever seemed more fun at the time. That ties in with her susceptibility to peer pressure discussed in the Emotional section.

Also, Kitty can be easily annoyed. Kurt and Lance tend to especially annoy her with their antics, even though she eventually becomes very close with the both of them.

[Emotional]
Kitty does have a bit of a temper when she gets frustrated, especially in the face of failure. The day after her powers manifested, she’s seen throwing a hissy fit after failing at the long jump, then snapping at Jean Grey when she approached her about her power. But this is usually hard to provoke from her normally optimistic attitude.

Though she’s not always sunny. Sometimes she can be a downright drama queen, pouting and huffing about something she doesn’t want to do. This is when she sometimes pulls out the puppy dog eye trick to try and get her way. Luckily that doesn’t always work, especially on Wolverine.

But Kitty knows she’s cute. She’s not as innocent as she looks, but she can play it up when she wants to get her way. Sometimes the effort is conscious, sometimes it isn’t, but playing the helpless little girl can be pretty effective in all sorts of situations, especially when she’s around cute boys. Even though she’s perfectly capable, she doesn’t mind playing the damsel in distress if a boy is around to play Prince Charming and whisk her off her feet like a princess. But this will only happen if a situation isn’t serious.

Also, as I stated in the personality section, she’s easily swayed by peer pressure, which often lands her in bad situations. Another example of that is how easily she was persuaded by Lance to break into the principal’s office so he could steal test answers. She didn’t know his motivation at the time, but because she was so quick to trust him and fall for his sweet-talking, she fell for it without even thinking twice. But once she discovered his true motivations, she stuck up for what she believed was right.

Lastly, Kitty can be emotionally vulnerable. Again, it’s typical for girls her age to be easily frustrated by people’s actions and hurt by people’s words. She also can be gullible at times, or can be sweet talked into a bad situation relatively easily until she realizes exactly what is going on.

But in a way, this vulnerability can be a strength. Because of it she’s a very compassionate person, and can be very openly affectionate toward others, even if they’re just acquaintances. She just wants to be everyone’s friend, and will often attach herself to people she’s decided she likes. Though that can also make her kind of annoying and nosey, prying her way into people’s business and even spying on them when she wants info. She can be a bit of a gossip queen at times, and has very little shame for it. She also has no problem talking and making fun of people behind their backs.

Samples

First Person:
Okay, so this’s weird. Maybe not the weirdest thing that’s ever happened, but it’s definitely in the top three. I think I’d give it a seven, maybe an eight on the freaky scale. At least there’s no creepy water dripping from the ceiling and someone whispering my name. I mean, how much more Twilight Zone can you get? At least it’s peaceful here – grass, trees. Definitely way more pleasant than my usual dreams.

So where does the freaky factor play in? Maybe because it feels so real. I mean, my dreams are usually pretty vague, right? But this’s like wow, I can feel everything. It’s just like with Danielle except it’s way less spooky and way more déjà vu. Even the wings feel familiar. How weird is that? Just kind of like “Oh, I guess I have wings now. Didn’t I have these before?” Seriously, I get a whole new body part and that’s all I can think of? What’s up with that?

I really hope I’m not making a habit of this.

Third Person:
This isn’t the first time Kitty’s woken up in a completely different place than where she fell asleep. In fact lately, it seems like all the crazy stuff happens to her the moment she closes her eyes. First the thing with her powers manifesting in the middle of the night and waking up on her basement floor, then the thing with Danielle, and now this. Is a good night’s sleep really so much to ask for? Or maybe she’s just being dramatic. There’s a pretty good chance of that.

All she knows is she definitely can’t seem to shake this weird feeling of déjà vu. Even the wings didn’t surprise her much. Or, well, maybe a little at first, but she kind of has bigger things to worry about because the more she wanders around, the more she remembers. And soon, she’s stumbling upon the village. She walks through the town square, her bare feet dirty and still wearing her Newfeather sundress. She runs a hand along the fountain’s smooth stone, peers in each storefront window, studies every face that passes by for any hint of familiarity. With every person she stops, she gets a few more pieces of the puzzle. Luceti, Newfeather, Malnosso – words that in another life would be totally unfamiliar to her jumpstart memories she doesn’t remember having.
Eventually she remembers a building and address, and her feet somehow know the way. As she wanders down the halls of the apartment building, another flood of memory hits her. Kurt… Kurt and Rogue and Ororo. She remembers them being here. She’s positive they were.

A pang of excitement - longing for something solid and familiar in all this weirdness, proof that she’s not going totally crazy - fills her stomach. They have to be here. She reaches for the door handle, thinks better of it and lifts her hand to knock.
Well, she thinks. Here goes nothing.
