Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

FANDOM CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our fandom applications.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Character

Name: Scott "Cyclops" Summers
Fandom: X-Men: Evolution
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Time Period: Episode 3.05 "Blind Alley"
Wing Color: Royal Blue
History: ...Well THAT'S a can of worms. this is canon-specific, but doesn't have much information about Scott at all. So let's just use this link for the Evo-specific matters while borrowing generously from this much more extensive guide to Scott in comics. For the purposes of roleplaying, I assume that (unless directly contradicted by Evo canon) Scott's physiology is the same as his comic counterpart. It's generally the most helpful roadmap available, since comics have detailed just about everything but Scott's genetic blueprints (though to be fair, I never *did* read any of those Mr. Sinister solo books. . . )

Scott "Cyclops" Summers | X-Men: Evolution 2/however many comments this takes

[personal profile] eyecondition 2012-01-03 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
Some people believe that a person's personality is predetermined by the order in which he was born. In a typical three-sibling structure, the eldest is a leader who bears responsibility over the younger children who haven't experienced what he has. Scott Summers represents that trope, magnified as it is by the fact that he is the eldest son in a familial structure of over a dozen children. He is a young man determined to lead by example, even if it means he'll be labelled uptight or unfriendly. Restraint is necessary for survival, particularly when dealing with a group of superpowered people who could easily lose control if not kept in check.

Control is a concept that dominates much of Scott's behavior, possibly as a response to his experiences spent lacking it. Aside from the limited control he possesses over his mutant powers (more on that later), Scott never truly had any sort of agency over his own destiny. At a young age, his family suffered a plane crash1 which "murdered" both of his parents and separated him from his young brother Alex for the better part of a decade. It was never Scott's decision to be orphaned, or to be a muant. What he could decide was to join the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. In the boarding school environment, Scott could be free to have the family structure he'd lost, and do his best to ensure that past traumas were never revisited. He's already lost one family; there's no reason to consider losing another.

Because of this need to protect his adopted family, Scott can be seen as fairly stiff and straightlaced. At times, he could even be considered boring (generally though, that accusation is reserved for grumbling underclassmen being ushered to a lesson they'd rather not be taught). But that "boring" goodie-good attitude is simply another facet of a young man trying to barrel himself into being treated as an adult. While the younger X-students might prefer to used their superhuman abilities for fun and games (particularly once Bobby Drake enrolls and finds reasons to coat nearly everything under a sheet of ice), Scott feels responsible for their wellbeing. He wants to live as an example of a mutant in full control. Even though (or possibly because) his mutant powers render him unable to open his eyes without artificial aid, he continues to live as normal of a life as he can manage. It's just that said normalcy involves constant risk assessment. He could play football, for example, but what if his glasses were to be knocked off? The only way to survive is through constant caution. This over-cautiousness might be troublesome to some, but it is better to be a good elder brother figure than trying to have a pack of overpowered pseudo-siblings create lethal accidents for himself.

Sometime in the future, perhaps Scott will grow into a stoic, serious-minded man incapable of understanding the joys of daily life. But as he exists at the moment, he's content with a simple teenage existence. He loves a good burger, enjoys hanging around his would-be girlfriend, and adores his awesome red sportscar.

...Wait. What do you mean he doesn't get to take the car with him? Not. Fair.

1 Though Evo doesn't delve into the details of this event, comic canon reveals that Christopher and Katherine Summers' plane was actually shot down by the aliens of the Shi'ar Empire. I could explain it in this app, but it would take about a thousand words too long. But if you ever *really* want to know about the fantastic intergalactic adventures of the extended Summers family, just ask. :| There's even a third brother Scott doesn't know exists! It's very complicated.

Strengths: As far as strengths go, most obviously of note would be Scott's mutant powers. Thanks to an accident of nature (which some theorize to be the next stage in human evolution), Scott has developed the ability to shoot powerful energy beams from his eyes. He's described the power as possessing "a cannon behind each eyelid." In his Evolution incarnation particularly, Scott's unrestrained optic blasts seem something akin to a focused nuclear explosion, potentially capable of crumbling small mountains. With the aid of his visor, he can control his energy far further, to the point of precision where he could shoot fruit from a tree at forty paces -- or perhaps some less-Western example.

Powers notwithstanding, Scott is in excellent shape for a teenager his age. He is tall and slim, and his consistent dedication to his training has made his build fairly athletic. Though he most certainly won't be winning any bodybuilding competitions any time soon, his physique is toned enough that Scott is the sort of teen who does his outdoor labor thoroughly topless, particularly when there are ladies nearby who might watch.

When it comes to emotional strength, Scott's greatest asset is his levelheadedness. Scott spends so much of his time expecting a crisis to emerge that when one does finally arrive, he's generally prepared. As one of the most senior X-Men in his "class," Scott has trained long hours in simulated environments to handle every situation from an angry civilian mob to a world apocalypse. If he hasn't trained for it, he's confident in his ability to figure it out on the fly. Nobody gets left behind, and losing is never an option.

Also, though it isn't touched upon in Evolution's canon, Scott is the result of a bloodline that certain scientists believe is superior to others. This is noteworthy mostly in terms of Malnosso interest, as "genetic superman" seems like the kind of trait a pile of mad scientists would really be into.

Weaknesses: As powerful as Scott's mutant powers are in theory, the obvious burden is that he is fully incapable of turning them off. As a direct result of his boyhood plane crash, Scott suffered extreme damage in the area of his brain that would have allowed him to summon his optic blasts at will.2 Lacking his natural defenses, Scott is forced to shield his eyes with a ruby quartz lens at all times. He owns a sunglass-styled pair for everyday use, and a less-subtle but more nuanced visor that allows him to control the release of his powers; without them, he can't help but be a danger to himself and others. Without his artificial aid, he is either a wanton destruction machine or a thoroughly blind man unable to risk opening his eyes for the slightest moment.

In a school where people can throw cars exclusively with the power of their minds, Scott comes off as painfully ordinary at times. Though he's indeed a very fit, taller-than-average individual, he's still without superhuman strength of healing. He can get papercuts like anyone else, and a broken rib will knock him out of commission for an extended period of time. It seems almost strange to consider normalcy a weakness, but the bar is set at a different level for mutantkind.
Also, he has a terrible habit of slouching.

Emotionally, as much as he would like to pretend otherwise, Scott is still very much a teenager. He's a prideful man, who understands exactly how to attract the casual attention of interested girls, and indulges perhaps too much in some of the hero worship he receives from the younger X-students. This pride occasionally turns to an incredibly ugly place, as it does during his interactions with the shapeshifting mutant Mystique. In her case, Scott felt so betrayed and furious by the danger she posed that he ruthlessly condemned her to almost certain doom by abandoning her in a military institution where she could be endlessly prodded by curious scientists. It's symptomatic of a darker impulse that Scott possesses that his petty grudges may lead to a cloud over the judgment that he so prides in himself. Sometimes, it's just a little too satisfying to see someone evil get what they deserve.

Additionally, the added Luceti conditions present another weakness in terms of simple security. The village is a place where superhumans are accepted and encouraged to be themselves -- ultimately, it is a microcosm of the utopia the X-Men hope to create one day. Prison or no prison, it may prove difficult to want to return to his home in Bayville, where classmates have come to avoid him in the halls and jeer speciesist slurs in the direction of him and his loved ones. It would be a challenge to retain the sheer will to return home in the face of much more pleasant conditions. The comfort may well undermine the remainder of his personality.

2 A practical example of this is the periods when Rogue leeches Scott's powers from him; where Scott is virtually crippled by the destructive force behind his eyes, Rogue is able to see normally and still unleash a super-strong blast when she wills it. Though, that's partially attributed to Evo!Rogue's innate ability to use other mutants' powers better than they themselves can. She's got a knack for it, I guess.

Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)

First Person:

I'm not really one for writing out journals, but Jean's always saying that it's a good way to collect thoughts. It feels a little like a creative writing assignment or something. I'm sitting at the same blank page writing until I find a point to be writing about. So this is Luceti, in 100 words or more.

This isn't being set over the network, is it?

Okay, good. At least I've gotten the filters down. Unless everyone here is just being really polite and not interrupting.

As far as I understand the way things work here, nobody knows what's brought us all to this place, and they all say they've been here for a while. I haven't met anyone who's been here for less than two months. Kurt, Rogue, and Ororo are here, and they all say they've been here way longer than that. Maybe it's something to do with some experiment of Forge's, who knows?

The village is nice enough for some place out in the wilderness. Maybe it's too nice. Everyone here seems to accept us for what we are. Kurt doesn't even rely on his watch! Rogue's got a job, and everyone seems to have friends here. It's almost like they've moved on. They seem happier here.

It's probably up to me to whip them back into shape. They're probably not training hard enough now that they don't have to hide their powers all the time. But would the Professor want that? Is it right to take them out of a place where they're so obviously happy?

I know they'll fall back in line if I start putting my foot down about it, but is it the right thing to do? I need to sit down with Storm and talk about this in private.

I wish Jean was here.

Third Person:

When Scott had last been aware, he'd been somewhere near the deserts of Mexico. Where in Mexico, he couldn't be sure, though there'd certainly been enough heat and sand to last a lifetime. It simply made no sense to pass out and wake up in a snowpile, more underdressed than he'd been in the summer sun. It would be an understatement to call him alarmed. He scrambled to his feet, ears straining for the sound of something other than the whistling wind of a cold breeze. It must have been the fight he'd had with Mystique. He'd obviously lost, and she'd had him shipped to a different corner of the globe instead. Was she planning to keep abandoning him in different places until the elements killed him outright? He doubted he'd last long in sub-zero conditions without even a blanket to insulate him.

No. Scott decided instantly that he wasn't in the mood to die today. Nothing good would come from pessimism. He'd found people in the bowels of a foreign country before, and he'd just have to do it again here too. Judging by the temperature, there might at least be some Inuit family that might be willing to share their igloo.

"Hello?" He ventured a greeting cautiously, and dared to crack a single eye open to see if there was some sort of civilization nearby. The small gesture alone sent a bright red beacon ripping through the foggy evening -- hopefully not into anyone's personal property. There seemed to be some manmade structures just off to the left of the snapshot image he'd gotten.

"I-is... anyone there?" He tried it again, more assertive now despite the telltale shiver in his tone. If there was at least one house, then there had to be people somewhere. With people came options. Maybe they'd have a phone he could use to call the mansion and get help sent out, or perhaps they at least had a first-aid kit and would be nice enough to patch up whatever injury was causing that bone-deep pain in his shoulderblades.

He desperately hoped the people here at least spoke English.
