Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

FANDOM CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our fandom applications.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

neptunesbeard: (why so serious)

[personal profile] neptunesbeard 2012-07-08 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:
La’gaan used to be an eager and enthusiastic young Atlantean student. That is to say that La’gaan, later known as Lagoon Boy, lived a life completely isolated from the surface world. Growing up under the ocean and in underwater series, he was pretty serious about his studies. He worked hard, he played hard, and he was helpful. He also grew up, like most Atlanteans, growing used to being different. Atlanteans come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and evolutionary history. While many looked similar to humans, La’gaan grew up looking...well, like he is now. A mixture between a fish and human. He was the kind of Atlantean disliked by the purists, Atlanteans who believed those with fish attributes weren’t true Atlanteans. He was part of a scuffle involving them in his youth, but for the most part, he was liked by all. He studied Atlantean sorcery, trying to master difficult spells, and he was always curious about the upper world and would ask questions when Kal’Durr came to visit. He was just a social...butterfly fish.

And then he grew up.

As a teenager, La’gaan is a lot more hot-headed than he was in his youth. Joining Young Justice as a replacement for Aqualad left him with a lot of lingering anger and a desire to prove himself before the others, but he was mostly viewed as the others (rightfully) as a rookie. One thing that didn’t change, though, was that he was social and laid back when he wasn’t working. He developed a romantic relationship with Miss Martian, and even others admitted that he was good to her. His favorite pastime was spending time with her, whether it be eating crab cakes or watching movies or just hanging out. He also sparred often with the other members; he had an ambition to beat Nightwing in hand-to-hand combat. As a fish out of water, he did a pretty decent job of fitting in with everyone, most of the time. That hadn’t changed from when he was a child; he was still social.

...But there’s still the rest of the time. La’gaan is cocky, desperate to prove himself, and too eager to fight. He’s seen as petty, starting arguments with Superboy (leading to La’gaan’s own eventual capture) simply for him being the ex-boyfriend of Miss Martian. He groans and complains when there’s not enough action or when he wants a job that doesn’t force him to be “the water” guy or leave him waiting around while others get to the action. He also has no problems with flaunting his girlfriend in front of others, especially Superboy. He can also be antagonistic at time, teasing Beast Boy about his homework while he’s studying or just heckling someone for the heck of it. Even worse, he once disobeyed a direct order that led to some dangerous consequences, all because Superboy mocked him. It led to an entire plan falling apart and La’gaan being captured for as-of-yet unknown reasons.

There’s just a lot that La’gaan doesn’t understand. He’s still working to prove himself within the team. He wants to be a team player and usually works well with others, making friends, but he’s still hot-headed enough and makes plenty of mistakes. He has to deal with humans being terrified of him for his appearance, something he shrugs off pretty easily, but he occasionally gets mistaken for being an alien or freak instead of an ally. He also just doesn’t know a lot about the surface world. In one episode, it’s revealed that he doesn’t know what crabcakes are, and he thinks they’re the greatest thing ever. He might come across as a jerk and a bully just flaunting his girlfriend around, but he’s still just a teenage guy. He thinks a bit invincible, he doesn’t want to be just the water guy, and he has a lot of resentment towards Aqualad’s apparent betrayal. Those that can get past that, though, will find that he’s not a bad guy to have around, though. He’s still quick to help, even if he wants some action, and he wouldn’t let down a friend. Ever.

Strengths:
Physical: As an Atlantean, La’gaan is slightly stronger and faster than the average human of his age and size. He’s skilled with hydrokinesis, as seen in the comics, and he can also increase his size so that he’s strong enough to open gates, break large objects, and deal with a larger number of enemies at once. Most importantly, though, might be that he can breathe underwater. Underwater, he’s even more agile and an even more dangerous opponent. He also has good reflexes, and he’s been training in hand-to-hand combat.

Mental: La’gaan did go to school. He learned Atlantean Sorcery, but he also likely learned basic reading and math there as well. Academically, he’s known to be a bit of an overachiever. He tries difficult spells and maneuvers even if he can’t really pull them off. Part of it is just to show off, but he still tries hard in school. He’s also extremely knowledgeable about the ocean, fish, and anything in between the water and the scales. He’s lived with them all of his life, after all, not unlike a human would dogs and cats. Like many on the team, he is also quick-thinking, since he kind of has to be. Situations are always changing in battle.

Emotional: La’gaan is very confident in himself. He gives his all at every opportunity. He’s also known for being “good” to Miss Martian. He knows how to treat someone in a relationship. He might not know how to treat an ex-boyfriend, but he does take good care of the people who matter to him. He bounces back easily from disappointment.

Weaknesses:

Weaknesses: Unfortunately, as much as he doesn’t want to be the water guy? La’gaan is the water guy. His skills and abilities are just so much more suited to battling in the water. In his enlarged form, he also loses a lot of his mobility. His arms are too puny to reach anything, so he’s kind of just a battering ram.

Mental: La’gaan just really doesn’t know everything there is to know about the surface world. His interactions with humans are pretty much limited to other members on the team, people he’s rescued, and whatever he sees on movie night. He has a lot of growing to do before finding a good place to fit in, especially considering that in his first appearance some people immediately mistake him for one of the enemy aliens.

Emotional: La’gaan has a tendency to overreact to everything. He’s too cocky. As aforementioned, he once disobeys a direct order and causes a lot of problems all because Superboy keeps heckling him (and to be fair, he does heckle Superboy first). He’s insecure and has a strong desire to prove himself, and those traits make him difficult to work with. He’s especially blinded with rage at Aqualad’s betrayal; sometimes, La’gaan just can’t get over things.

(For the strengths and weaknesses section, feel free to include powers or special abilities if they apply.)

Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)

First Person:
Let me get this straight, chums. [He still doesn’t like most of you, Luceti. You’re all such...strange fish, okay.] All of you guys just go on these missions and drafts, and it’s not even your world? And none of you find that unusual at all? [He scoffs.] Neptune’s beard, that’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever heard! Why would you want to help out your own kidnappers like that? Someone’s going to have to run that past me again, because from where I’m swimming, it makes no sense at all. [So, he’s a little mad. But he wants to understand, at least. He’s going to shrug it off and take a deep breath. This is a strange, winged world.]

I’m sure you’ve all got your reasons, [stupid reasons, probably.] so I want to hear them. Or you can just tell me when you get used to all of the animals talking. I don’t know how he does it back home, fish don’t have anything useful to say. Anyone know if the fish in the ocean are any smarter? Or am I the only one even trying?

Third Person:
No matter how much he tried to ignore them, the wings on his back never stopped feeling off. Fish didn’t have wings. Humans weren’t supposed to have wings. Yet here he was, Lagoon Boy, with wings. Swimming felt off as a result, and that was one of the things he did every day. A guy like him had to keep himself wet, anyways.

He stopped where he was, scanning the water around him. He was at least used to them enough that swimming around to relax felt normal, but when he tried to swim faster or perform any aquatic maneuver, they felt off. Fractions of a second slower, enough to disorient him after being so used to doing them perfectly after all of this time. If he didn’t work on it now, he wouldn’t be satisfied later, when he actually might need them. Who knew what might be lurking in these depths, anyways? Aside from the ruins that one annoying girl had mentioned once or twice.

La’gaan calmed himself down, breathing through his gills and watching the fish swim past him, occasionally talking. That was something he had grown used to as well. At first, he had facepalmed or chased them away, but now he was ignoring them. This was the second time he had to get used to a new world. First it was Earth, and now it was Luceti. At least Earth made some lick of sense, Luceti was absolutely confusing at times.

He thought back to the events that led to his capture, disobeying orders...he had to forget all of that. He shook his head in the water, trying to clear his head again. Next time, he wouldn’t let something like that happen. He would be stronger, faster. He would be ready for it, and without his team here, it meant he was the only one responsible for his training.

And that was enough thinking. He exhaled and kicked off, swimming away from the beach again. He still needed to work on his sharp turns. It was just him and the ocean, and sometimes? That was just fine.

Note: Masa was informed of the lateness. Computer stuff.
