Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

FANDOM CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our fandom applications.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Theodore "Teddy" Altman | Young Avengers 2/3

[personal profile] kukki 2012-07-07 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality:
"If you think about it… There's no such thing as normal. Normal doesn't exist. Every single person on the planet is entirely different from every other person on the planet. Which means you can be average. You can even be typical. But kids don't end up killing themselves – or taking guns to school – because they want to be typical. They want to be normal. More than anything. And until very recently… So did I."

If there's one thing Teddy Altman is not, it's normal. Not only is he gay in a society where that sort of thing is not the norm, but he is also a shapeshifting alien who was raised on earth by a surrogate mother who sold real estate, and is the son of Captain Mar-vell, a Kree hero, and Anelle, the Skrull emperor's daughter, essentially making him next in line to the throne, though he refused time after time, and is really named Dorrek VIII. In every sense of the word, Teddy is not normal in the slightest.

And so, for years, he tried his best to be that. It didn't go so well, leading to him being used for his powers thanks to him being so desperate to be liked and one of the guys. But it may have lead to the best thing that ever happened to him, that being getting enrolled into the Young Avengers team.

It was only after that that he started to see himself as someone who wasn't normal and was okay with it. Because he was with a group of kids who were just as crazy as he was, some physically, some emotionally. And you know what? That's what made them so great, that's what made them heroes. They were a bunch of not normal kids who were doing what they loved, fighting crime and being super heroes.

These days, Teddy is very comfortable with who and what he is, even though the "what" came after quite a lot of hardships and attempted kidnappings. There are some things that he's a little reserved about: his looks, for one. Not that he ever openly talks about it, but as a shape shifter, he went through his life constantly changing to try to fit into society's standards. For Greg and his friends, he became tall and muscular with short hair, and he seemed to only be useful when he was someone else, not just himself. It was, as he said, only until recently that he started to be more comfortable just being him, and that's thanks to not only the Young Avengers, but also largely to his boyfriend, Billy.

Though it's because he's a shape shifter that his personality is somewhat chameleon-like, shifting to suit the situation or what he thinks might be best. When he needs to be patient, he's patient. When he needs to be angry, oh hell, he's angry. Of course, there are some things he won't bend for, but generally, he has a remarkable ability to pick up on emotions and shape himself to handle it, whether it means to be someone's shoulder to cry on or to be the protective hulk that his idiot boyfriend needs sometimes. That's not to say his emotions are fake; they're very real. He just knows when to show it and when to keep it back. In a sense, it ties into how we only see him cry once, and not when his mother died in front of his eyes, but when the conflict was finally over, and he had the opportunity to sprinkle her ashes into the wind.

"What are you doing?" "Saving your life. Don't make me regret it."

Teddy can be shown to have incredible patience and very calm unless pushed. He's usually the one with the cooler head, or the one in the background commenting on whatever is going on, whether it be an argument between his friends or Billy's parents nearly finding out that he's a super hero, or trying to keep the peace when an argument breaks out. Even in most tense situations, like dealing with the one who murdered his mother without losing his temper or his patience, in fact even holding Billy back from doing such a thing, he's able to push aside whatever negative emotions he's feeling to get the information that he needs and figure out what's going on that way. Not that he's happy about doing such things, as mentioned in the quote above. But it's gotten him to learn who and what he is without as much hassle as there could have been. He can even deal with super villains, work with them to an extent as long as it's not for evil things, and hold his tongue unless something is just clearly bothering him, ala working with the Maximoff family until continued stupidity from Billy makes him lose it. And even then, he keeps his cool during it.

Another good example is when he sees someone who is supposedly Captain Mar-Vell, and Billy stops him and mentions how his mother was burned alive right in front of him. All Teddy does is look away and say Billy's name before the latter realizes what he's done and apologizes, and it's never mentioned again. He can tell when someone's just throwing words to try to get him to do what they want, or to make him think a little harder about something. He knows they don't really mean it in that case. Still stings, yes, but it's not something to lose one's cool over.

"But if you somehow manage to convince my idiot boyfriend to go with you… I will rip your legs off. Do we understand each other, Pietro?"

Hohoho, but just because Teddy's patient doesn't mean that he doesn't get angry. One of the things that Billy's comments on when describing Teddy is that he can lose his temper, doesn't listen, and can be impatient at times (though all he's doing is talking about his bad points). This is mostly just to fit the situation; Back up there with the Super Skrull, when the Skrulls and the Kree start to fight each other, Teddy throws all advice to the wind and throws himself into the middle of it with the thought that maybe he can stop it, and he doesn't take any other option. When Teddy is fixed on an idea, he's very set on it, so much that he doesn't think of any other way unless he's forcibly sat down and told why his is a bad idea and why these other ones might be good. It's almost what Captain America had to do when he had to explain to Teddy that he had a more important job for him than breaking the prisoners of Civil War, one of them being Billy, out. It's mostly when a situation is desperate and pulling way too hard on Teddy's emotions that he pushes all else aside and focuses on what he thinks needs to be done right then and right there.

Most of Teddy's anger reveals itself when Billy is threatened or is about to do something very stupid. Not only has he threatened bodily harm to someone like Pietro, but he's also very quietly threatened Captain America, of all people, saying that he and Billy are partners and that if something happened to him, their biggest concern would be Teddy. To a lesser extent, his friends draw out his protective instincts as well, but Billy is the one that triggers everything to make him panic and get angry. In a sense, Teddy's anger can be compared to that of a cobra. It's very restrained and calm, but very deadly. When he's angry, he makes himself larger and much more imposing, poised and ready to strike. There's a chance he won't attack, or bite in this case, but one would know well enough to back the hell off. The fact that he's been able to talk down just about everyone he threatens, including Magneto's son Pietro, shows just how good Teddy is at this.

"My real name is Teddy Altman. I've got super strength… I don't hulk out, if that's what you mean. At least not any more than most sixteen-year-olds."

Teddy has quite a range of powers thanks to his genetics. The Skrull side gives him the ability to shape shift, changing hair colors and styles, skin color, appearance entirely, even turning limbs into objects such as a rock, or having spikes come out of it. He also has an accelerated rate of healing, and if his vital organs are in danger, they'll automatically shift out of the way. It also gives him super hearing. The Kree side gives him super strength, something that's added on by his Skrull physiology. When he's in battle, he turns big, imposing and green, almost like the Hulk himself. This has given him the codename "Hulkling", which has stuck with him since the very beginning.

"Witnesses claim … That Teen-Hulk was very polite – "

Now, all of this seems to paint Teddy as a cool-headed fellow who can be deadly when he wants to be. And sure, that's true, but the core of Teddy's personality is the fact that he's very polite and something of a sweetheart. In the very first issue, as a fire burns through an apartment, Teddy's the one who grabs a girl's doll and hands it to her, knelt down and reassuring. And when Cassie passes out from first discovering her powers, Teddy's the one who 's holding her hand rather than standing there in shock. And even after the rest of the Avengers continuously try to break their group up and take them down, he still treats them with utmost respect. He can be sarcastic and witty, have a somewhat dry sense of humor, and able to give out compliments even in the face of embarrassment. His response to Cassie, an intruder at the time, throwing Eli over her shoulder was, "That was awesome. Sorry, Patriot."

That's one of the things that makes Teddy so damn likable. In the words of his own boyfriend, "You're kind. You're generous. You threaten to maim people for me." He's a supportive friend, always being there to listen or talk, whatever he needs to be for that person. It's not really that he shapes himself and is never himself, though; it's just who he is. Someone who's very controlled and shifting to fit what's needed for the situation. At his core, though, he's kind, generous, stubborn, polite, incredibly devoted, quick to anger even in a controlled state, calm and humorous.

"Heh. When I was nine all I cared about was Pokemon." "Po – " "The opposite of training to be a warrior."

Oh yes, and he's also a huge geek and a total dork about most things, and it's a large part of him. Usually he's right there with Billy quietly muttering about how he can't believe something's happening, but he's a little quieter about it than his boyfriend. He's into comics and other super heroes, tv shows, western animation and anime, and especially video games. Get him on the subject and he can talk for hours about it, provided the other person is willing to hear it or knows what he's talking about. Otherwise, he'll keep it short and sweet without any offense, like his conversation with Captain Mar-vell above. Of course, this is why talks with Billy tend to last for a very long time, and why they can talk about anything with each other as well as being mutually awed by whatever might happen. It's also why he can tease Billy about being even geekier than he is at times ("Norse Nerd."). Geeks in love, yes.

Theodore "Teddy" Altman | Young Avengers 3/3

[personal profile] kukki 2012-07-07 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Strengths:

Physical: As someone who is half Skrull and half Kree, Teddy is ridiculously powerful, probably more so than anyone else in the group physically. Even in his normal form, Teddy has super strength thanks to Kree genetics, and it's only made even stronger with his super powered Skrull genes. At one point, he punches the Super Skrull himself clear through a building and out of sight with both his strength and by shifting his arm into a literal rock, and he doesn't seem too surprised by his own strength. As a shape shifter, he can pretty much change his body into whatever and whoever he wants. In the past, he'd shift to look like other super heroes so that his supposed best friend, Greg, can get all the attention. But this also means that he can harden his skin if he wants, essentially giving himself a suit of armor, become as large as he wants (something that really shows itself when Billy briefly stops existing), and be as scary as hell if he wanted to be. He can also fly by giving himself a pair of giant bat wings of sorts, something he likes to use quite often, grow himself spikes or claws, and even extend his limbs just like Reed Richards (though he doesn't used this trick very often).

The Skrull side of him also gives him a healing ability, though it's slower than someone like Wolverine. Still, it allows him to be extremely hard to kill, especially with how his organs shift into a safer position even when he's unconscious. It's shown in canon that even if a skrull suffers what might be a mortal injury, they still recover from it with time. For someone who has an emotional and protective boyfriend who can bend reality to his will, this is a very good ability to have.

He's also apparently immune to pheromones thrown at him because of all this. :|a

Mental: Teddy is a smart person who can easily put himself in someone else's shoes, literally. He observes even as he speaks, and whether he's aware of it or not, he's always looking out for how a person reacts, what kind of twitches they might have, how they shift or stand or what might be the best thing for them to do. This is purely because of the fact that he shape shifts. There may be a time where he has to change into someone without warning, and it's times like that where his observing really pays off. He's able to fool the entire staff of Prison 42, even Iron Man into thinking he was Hank Pym, which allows him to get inside and break everyone out.

It's why he can figure out what a person's thinking or what they might do, what's going on with them, what their ulterior motives are. Especially his boyfriend. He's just very perceptive and observant of people.

And he… knows a lot about geek culture…?!

He also has a very strong moral compass, one that allows him to never kill despite how much he'll threaten to do so. In Family Matters, when they're all supposed to lay low, he ends up using his powers anyway to stop a purse snatcher. He gets scolded lightly for it, but he defends his actions, for he knew it was the right thing to do despite the danger of revealing himself. In fact, his only real regret is his shoddy impersonation of Reed Richards, as he at first thinks it's actually him, for that reason, who's grabbing him instead of the Super Skrull. Still, he'd do it again, shoddy impersonation and all, if it meant doing what was right. He also manages to get others on track too, as a result of this.

Emotional: If there's one thing Teddy can do, it's keep a lid on his emotions when he needs to. He might make a snide remark or two, but otherwise, he keeps his mouth shut and his own feelings on the matter out of the way for the most part until it's otherwise necessary. Control is important to him, but not so much that he just hides everything that he's feeling. He laughs, he grins, he gets angry, he's surprised, confused, cries, just like a normal person. Out of the group, save for Vision of course, he's just more likely to keep a level head and act as support unless certain things happen.

He is also very patient, as said many times above. But he's also understanding and supportive of his friends and loved ones. When something's bothering him, or if he needs help with something, he doesn't mind going to his friends and asking them or talking things out with them. When Kate loses her bow, Billy tells Teddy about it, and Teddy, concerned and unsure how to approach Kate about the problem, goes to Cassie, her best friend, instead, and tries to talk it out with her. And going by how Teddy gets Billy to work on his powers during the first book, it's not hard to tell that he's helped him tremendously with figuring them out with him, coaching him and reading those self-help books along with him, even flying with him (it ended with a lot of crashes). He's a go-to guy without being afraid of going to people as well.

Weaknesses:
Physical: Despite how utterly strong and powerful he is, there are some moments of vulnerability in which he can get hurt. Sometimes he's so set on something that he makes the mistake of keeping his human form which, while still super strong, is still much more susceptible to pain and injury. He does heal fast, but he can still remain hurt for a little while. He has been knocked out and overwhelmed before; he usually has to be off guard for it, but with the way of battle, sometimes that happens.

And though he's strong and can heal fast, there are a couple ways to kill him. Decapitation or being shot through the head (the new empress of the Skrulls kills another in this fashion), or getting him caught up in an explosion. I believe the brain is what controls the healing, so destroying that would stop that and… well, make them die. Whereas an explosion would just… not only destroy the brain but also everything else. |Da It's also possible to catch him off guard fast enough to strike at one of his vital areas, as Skrulls have died by suddenly being shot in the chest and whatnot.

Mental: Teddy can be utterly and irrationally stubborn, to the point where he'll only listen to what he wants to hear. During Family Matters, he rushes out to try to stop the war, ignoring Billy's protests except to hear that he doesn't listen ("I heard that!" "Oh, now he listens to me!"). It can sometimes get him into a lot of trouble, such as… well, rushing out to try to stop the war. When he becomes fixed on something, he tends to have tunnel vision regarding it. He wants the result and nothing more, and it's hard to get him to listen to any other solution unless it's forcibly presented to him.

Emotional: There are a few here, but let's get the biggest one of all out of the way: BILLY. Everything that was said about Teddy's control tends to fly off the handle when Billy's life is in danger. He cries out for him and is right at his side and everything about the battle is about Billy instead. In fact, the only times that he's really lost his cool all had to do with Billy. The worst case of all was when he was erased from the timestream, essentially ceasing to exist. Teddy grew to three times his size, his voice was louder than ever, he reached out with a horribly clawed hand to demand the person who did that to him to give him back, and he may well have killed him if he himself hadn't been erased as well. He pretty much "hulked out" which, considering his usual state, is pretty terrifying.

When things do bother him, he tends to get a little grumbly about it. He'll complain when he does get hurt, he'll make irritated half-hearted threats when Billy goes off to do something stupid (though it quickly melts to relief and concern when they do find the idiot boyfriend). He can set his annoyance aside at times, but he can't really help it sometimes. Again, when Billy gets arrested and thrown into Prison 42, we don't see Hulkling much, but when we do, he's angry and irritated, pushing to get into the prison and even losing his temper with Captain America when the latter tries to tell him that he has something more important to do.

Speaking of that, the way he pushes his emotions aside to get something done might even come across as cold. Even Billy's a little confused by how Teddy seems to be "bonding" with the Super Skrull, the one who murdered Teddy's mother in front of his eyes. The truth of it is yes, he may hate to have to set aside whatever he's feeling, but he knows when the time is just not right to have them fly out of control. There are exceptions, of course (BILLY), but otherwise, he tends to just keep it inside until it's all over. This can honestly be seen as both a strength and a weakness; it's good that he doesn't just fly off the handle and can keep enough cool to figure things out, but at the same time, he can come off as callous and cold to the situation.

Although when his wits are about him and he's utterly confused, he does tend to lose his temper a little. If he has time to recover, he can calm down – In Family Matters, he's just chillaxin' in captivity and trying to ask the Super Skrull to stop and why he's here. Secret Invasion, however, has him in the middle of another Skrull war for a reason he doesn't know, knocked out, carried around to places he doesn't know, and separated from most of his team. Not to mention that Xavin tells him that all of this is his fault, that the decision he made in Family Matters has come to bite him in the ass. All Teddy can do is defend himself and snap to ask what he's supposed to do, becoming more frustrated over the fact that no one seems to know. He still holds up better than most people would in a situation like that, but it shows that even he can be shaken by such things.

Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)

First Person:
[There's a shirtless young man with blond hair and blue eyes staring at the camera. Once he realizes it's on, he gives a friendly smile and a nod of his head.]

I'm probably just talking to a book right now, but… [He can't help letting the corner of his smile grow. Heh, just like Avatar.] Hey. My name is Teddy Altman, and I just got here. I guess that makes me a New Feather? Anyway… I take it there's no way out of here. I'm not going to ask how to get back or anything, I just need to know one thing.

Are there any super heroes around here, or anyone who considers themselves one? I'm… [One of you, and maybe we can get together and figure out what to do about this.] … actually a really big fan! I've got all kinds of comic books back at home, like… like Captain America and Iron Man.

[… His smile fades for just a moment before it's fully back on. That… was probably a poor example, considering what happened just recently. But if there really are people from different galaxies and universes, then they don't need to know that.]

I guess what I'm trying to ask is… [He runs a hand through his hair: he really should've thought his questioning though.] What… kind of powers do you guys have? And for everyone else, what do you consider a hero? Someone who flies around and uses their powers to help people, or something different?

… And I could probably use a new shirt. Mine disappeared somehow… Kate is going to kill me if she figures out I lost my outfit.

Third Person:
"Mm… Wha… Whasgoinon…?"

It was the first thing that came out of Teddy's mouth as he woke up and waited for the spots in front of his vision to fade away. What happened? He'd been… knocked out, by…

"Billy! The others!" He hissed out as his wits gathered enough to let him push himself to his feet and clench his fists at his sides, eyes darting to try to find anyone who'd been with him earlier.

And then it was to figure out just where he was. This… was definitely not New York City. Either that, or he was in some section of Central Park that he'd never been in before.

"Xavin?!" Yes, even in his delirious state from before, Teddy could tell just who it was that rescued them. It comes with the ability to memorize faces so well. But at this moment, that one face wasn't showing itself, despite Teddy knowing that he was there before the world just blacked out entirely.

Did something happen to him? To the both of them?

He clenches his fists at his sides and grits his teeth behind his lips in an attempt to calm himself down. His immediate thought is that he can't be here, that everyone else, Billy, is in danger, the Skrulls have invaded and he doesn't even know why or what he can do…

He lets out a long breath through his nose, shuts his eyes, then opens them as he pushes aside his own confusion and panic in favor of figuring out where he is and what's going on. First thing's first: get out of these woods and find his way back to the battlefield.

It doesn't take much effort at all now. Just the stretching of his body, the bulking of his muscles and the color of his skin, and he's just about ready to go –

Except when he attempts to shift wings through his back.

It never hurt before. It certainly never made him cry out as his vision went white and make him suddenly find himself on the ground.

"What just…?"

What just happened? Pain was shooting all over his back and somehow making everything in his body feel weak, enough to revert back to his human form: Teddy, not Hulkling. He can only breathe hard as a bead of sweat hangs onto the tip of his nose, his mind scrambling to figure out what went wrong and what happened to him. He's never felt this kind of pain while shifting into anything…

It's then that he feels something else poking through his back. He hadn't noticed before, having been too caught up with thoughts of the war and what he should do about it and Billy. But now…

He turns his head, perhaps a little more than the average human could, to look at his back. The image makes his eyes widen and his fingers to clench into the ground.

Wings? Ones that he didn't create himself, nor could he shift away?

"I… I don't know what the hell is going on, but…" The comment was mostly just to say something, just to do something other than angrily demand such things to the air. He was alone, he knew it. He couldn't hear anything for a good distance away. It'd be stupid and pointless to try shouting to someone who wasn't there.

Still, Teddy had to figure things out somehow.

He waits until the pain in his back recedes before he pushes himself to his feet again and changes into Hulkling once more, this time very careful to sprout his own wings from a different spot. And, yet again, he's interrupted just as he's about to take off by the sight of a book hidden in the grass, one that had his name on the front.

"This is looking more and more like some kind of intro to a horror video game…" Or a trap. Yet he still keeps his eyes and ears open as he picks up the journal and flips through it, keeping to his Hulkling form just in case. Maybe he can get information this way.
