PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!
Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!
PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.
If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.
The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.
Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.
If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!
A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.
Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Lenore "Len" Drale

Female
Age:
22, almost 23

Physical Appearance:
Len is small for her age but fairly fit, used to an active lifestyle. This does not translate into any kind of strength, though, as she is more built for stamina and speed. She has short red hair and tends to wear clothing that is neither loose or tight, preferring a "sleek" look.

Lenore Drale is the daughter of Arthur and Sasha Drale. Arthur Drale is a celebrated hero of the Trade War, which ended with three planets opening their ports ot Nimon traders and helped secure the planet's faltering independence after a nearly galaxy-wide embargo by the political heads of Aosas. Lenore was raised to follow in her father's footsteps.
Unfortunately, Lenore has her mother's head for battle and ships. That is to say-- she retains very little of what she learns of either. She attended the best of schools possible until she was eighteen. Her aptitude for technology gained her a full scholarship to the Minom Space Academy if she could pass the written, physical, and psychological evaluations to earn admittance. When she applied and tested the first time, Lenore failed part of the physical assessment. Her father put her through personal training, and she applied again after six months. The second time, she was dismissed for having been found "psychologically unfit," with no further explanation.
Lenore refused to go home with those results. Fearing her father's reaction, she bartered for passage on a merchant vessel, insisting she didn't care where he was headed. Finally, she wound up on Wyar, the technology and slaver capital of the solar system. Lenore overheard the merchant captain negotiating with a slaver, talking about the price of a young woman. Lenore, sure she was about to be double-crossed, bolted.
Running presented its own problems. Lenore was friendless and without money of any kind. She was a young woman on a planet rife with the slave trade. For all her skill with Nimon technology, she was completely out of her depth with Wyar work, the most advanced in the system and jealously guarded by those who understood it. Lenore learned to steal in order to eat, and she became adept at finding out-of-the-way places to hide so she could sleep. Even so, she was barely able to survive on her own.
Three months after her arrival, Lenore met Jayce. He was a native of Wyar, heavily into the gambling side of the world. Lenore attempted to pickpocket him, got caught, and nearly had her hand cut off for it. However, Lenore quickly tried to bargain, as she was held from running. She got Jayce to admit he wanted to get into a card game that was exclusively for slavers. Lenore suggested that, for a modest fee, she could pass herself off as his slave, thus giving him the right to attend. Jayce won big, and Lenore became his partner.
For three years, Len helped Jayce run minor cons, and she became his "good luck charm" in gambling. Jayce found his major calling in racing. The bike he used was antiquated... but Len realised that her computer skills were up to the task of sneaking past the high-tech security on most of the more up-to-date bikes the other racers used. Using her logpad (the future of the tablet computer) she could interrupt the power to the bikes, creating minor stalls in individual crafts, always put down as technical difficulties to be expected in racing.
The last race Len sabotaged brough her into Cora's path. Core was the (then) twenty-two-year-old chief mechanic of the sloop-of-war CS Confidante, a privateer vessel originally from Nimon. After losing her race, Cora stayed to watch the rest of the matches. She saw len on her logpad and put the pieces together enough to realise what was behind the stalling she and others were suffering. Cora confronted Len to demand a portion of the winnings overall to keep her from reporting the cheating. Len promised to pay... then ran the moment Cora turned her back.
That night, Len arrived at the place she shared with Jayce. He hurried her into her hiding spot just before a group of slavers forced their way in. Len hid and listened as the slavers, whom Jayce owed a lot of money, questioned him on Len's location. They would accept her to pay off his debts. When he proved unwilling to turn on her, the slavers beat him to death after telling him that they'd find her anyway. Unaware of Len's presence, they agreed to watch the house for her return and left to take up posts.
It required all the stealth Len could manage, but she narrowly escaped the building and ran to the port, intending to buy passage on any ship leaving with whatever she could bargain with. Cora was there, saw Len, and half dragged her onto a ship. There, Len met Captain Heiyt Nodolt and Technology Officer Aaron Riley. Cora described Len's actions at the races in glowing terms, obviously not too concerned over the money Len had never paid. After some pressing from Captain Nodolt, Len explained about the slavers and her desperation to get off the planet. Riley agreed to take her on as an assistant.
Len joined the crew of Confidante.
For nine months, Len reworked the security systems of the ship within Riley's allowances. The most delicate part was the link between the ship and the captain. Heiyt Nodolt was part of an experimental treatment to implant cyborg technology into a Minom Space Academy graduate. The implant, which replaced her left eye, allowed a direct connection to all the systems of Confidante.
During a particularly vicious space battle, Riley was killed. Nodolt, in the aftermath, promoted Len to Technology Officer.

Len is friendly. In crowded place and with people she trusts around her to keep an eye on her, Len knows no stranger. She will approach almost anyone if the atmosphere does not seem condusive to being abducted and dragged back to a slaver ship or otherwise seedy place. Len is always willing to lend an ear and offer sympathy, and she is always ready to give advice-- whether or not it's asked for. It may not always be good advice, but she means well.
Len is impulsive. If her gut tells her something, Len goes with it. It isn't panic when things go wrong. She usually has a plan when she does something. It's almost instinct, listening to the first part of her brain that comes up with a decent idea. She likes and dislikes people based on first impressions, though even moderate actions to the contrary can change her opinion dramatically. Some people see this as being "fickle." Len sees it as being "flexible."
Len is optimistic. In general, Len tries to think people are good on the whole. Aliens? Totally count as people in her book. She also tends to think things will work out like they should. This doesn't mean that she goes into things blindly. There's a healthy dose of realism as to dangerous situations and the knowledge that there are bad people in the world... She just thinks the good outnumbers the bad and that if competent people are involved in said dangerous situations, the right ends will come about.
Len is good at technology. Len borders on being a prodigy, and it comes quite naturally to her, but she also devotes herself to the work, too. She likes to practice with any piece of technology from any culture in Crystalis that she can get her hands on, and she learned (from a few pieces of pilfered Wyar technology) the basics of one of the most advanced forms of technology in her solar system. She has a long way to go before she can rival an Atrivis (the natives of Wyar) in terms of technical skill, but she outpaces most humans in her solar system.
Len has trouble focusing. While completely devoted to her technology and her hobby of Earth research, Len has difficulty concentrating on anything else. Despite over a year on Confidante and having been raised by a military father, she fails to grasp the difference between a boat and a ship (the number of engines) and such things as what separates a sloop from a first-rate figrate (the number of guns). She forgets the offical titles of most of the crew on ships on a regular basis, and she only knows a handful of Confidante titles without regular reminding.
Len is self-reliant. After having run away from home, Len quickly learned that nothing would be handed to her anymore. She went from being a well-off girl to a bum on the streets and learned to beg and steal, anything to keep from going hungry. When a crisis hits, the first person Len takes care of is herself. If she can then stop and safely worry about another person, she will. But if she isn't safe? She won't consider anyone else or any responsibilities she might have to anyone or anything until she is safe.
Len is always pushing herself to do better at her job. After being taken on as part of the crew of Confidante, Len strove constantly to prove she deserved to be there. She ran regular maintence on the ship's security system and set to hacking it herself to find out where the weak points were so she could fortify them. She learned to get through other ship's security systems using her logpad to turn their own guns against them or disable their shields or cut off their power. In one particularly vicious attack by a pirate vessel that was determined to kill as many of the Confidante crew as possible (also the battle that claimed Riley's life), Len hacked into the enemy ship and released their airlocks, sucking all the oxygen out of the ship and killing every pirate aboard. It was that stunt that proved to Captain Nodolt that Len could take over the late Riley's position as Technology Officer.
Len is a coward. The moment danger appears, Len is somewhere else. If she cannot run, she will do whatever it takes to diffuse the situation or put herself in a position where she can run. She will abandon anyone and anything at a moment's notice if her safety is obviously in danger. While she may feel remorse some time after the fact (once she is safe and the threat is gone), she does not show any hesitation during the course of her actions. When the Confidante engages in battle, Len can often be found hiding somewhere (usually under her bed) with her logpad, working on disabling systems on the enemy ship from the safety of her hiding place.
Strengths:
Physical-
Len is small and flexible, able to climb and fit herself into small places. She is fast when she runs long distances and has good stamina.
Emotional-
Len rarely panics. She makes quick decisions, but they are usually based on what is presented to her, rather than something she has made up in her head. Stress makes her react quickly and fully, but she does not act blindly. She tends to be very warm-hearted and likes helping others, often offering unsolicited advice that borders on the idealistic.
Mental-
Understanding technology comes easily to Len, as does the math for calculating probabilities, which helps in her gambling. When faced with new information, Len learns quickly if she is interested and applies what she can from prior knowledge.
Weaknesses:
Physical-
Len is very human with a moderate immune system. She is not very strong and has no healing abilities beyond a normal person's.
Emotional-
Len is a coward. In a crisis, nearly every thought of hers will turn toward the best way to escape. In high-stress situations, Len is very self-centered. If she is best served by a course of action, she will take it, regardless of how well it serves the person she might be with at the time or anyone who might be relying on her. Len is also very impulsive. If someone makes a good first impression, she will usually trust them, but her faith can be lost just as easily, and she will cut all ties if she thinks she has cause to do so.
Mental-
Outside her field, Len's ability to retain information is limited. She pays very little attention to anything off her computer screen, unless it has to do with her one major hobby of learning about Earth. When not invested in a subject, she is easily distracted by a new conversation, something else to look at, or even her own mind. She can barely write, raised almost entirely on typing, and her knowledge on anything non-Earth-related before about 2300 AD is shoddy at best. Even where Earth is concerned, her knowledge is a mix of fact and fiction, truth and conjecture, without much regard for which is which.

First Person:
[Good morning, Luceti! Have a cheerful, excited not-spacer.]
Okay, so, I mean, I figure this isn't a joke or anything. A girl has to ask, though, right? I mean, I've never seen anything like it.
[To demonstrate, she shows a ripped page of the Journal with neat handwriting on it.]
How do you do this? Could someone teach me how to do it? Is this really what people used to do? Well, I guess, do now, since it's not really "used to" here.
I'd really, really like to learn. Is it hard? We don't have this kind of thing where I'm from; it's all keypad entry. But, I mean, I guess I read about people doing this sort of thing on Earth, but I kind of figured that was like a lot of other stuff and just people making it all up now since it's not like anyone can say they're wrong.
Anyway, I'm rambling. Point: I want to learn. Really, really badly.
Third Person:
She liked Confidante. Len definitely couldn't argue that. She liked the boat and its strong captain, warm doctor, welcoming crew. She really liked Cora. One of these days, she promised herself, she was going to get up the nerve. Okay, that meant she had to get back first, but... everything there had stopped, right? That's what everyone said. So! That just gave her more time to prepare. To figure out exactly what she ought to say.
Win-win.
She liked Confidante. She didn't like the battles, and the shouting and the danger. She'd needed off Wyar and fast, and then she'd felt like she owed the captain. Plus, well, they had really needed the help. That security system of theirs? Pathetic. Seriously. When had it been programmed? The 23rd century? Seemed like it. So, they'd needed her. She'd totally revamped the whole thing. Really, Len liked to think she'd even made it easier on Captain Nodolt, made transitions more seamless.
But she didn't like it when the whole ship shook from an enemy broadside. She hated how her bed rattled with her under it. She didn't like killing people, even if they were trying to kill them too. But Captain Nodolt never ran. Not really. So Len did what she could. Hid and hacked away at the security of the opposing ship. At least they were usually pirates, bent on killing them all or selling them into slavery. That made it easier to detonate their cannons from inside a computer or disengage their shields or shut down their engine. They were bad people who deserved it.
But here.
Here, she was okay. The Malnosso had asked other people to fight, but they'd never sent her. She didn't have to hide here. Nothing bad happened in the village. Okay, maybe one or two little things, but there was always someone else to handle it. No one ever looked at her or told her it was her job to do something or anything like that. So Luceti wasn't perfect. And she missed Confidante. Especially Cora.
She really liked it here anyway.
