Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. You may link to threads on the
trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered. HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. Personality:
At a glance, Luffy will seem like a completely reckless and blatant idiot. He rarely listens, charges ahead (most of the time) without thinking whatsoever, and he is incredibly stubborn and hates to come to terms with anything as long as he has his mind set on something. Sure, in a lot of ways these things are true, but he is a character who has a certain layer of depth you have to dig for to really understand. For example, part of the reason for his completely recklessness behavior is likely because of his dependence on his crew. He realizes that he cannot do everything alone, and tries to focus on what he IS good at and let the others be good at what they’re good at. And that is why he leaves a lot of the thinking to his crew. Meanwhile, he focuses most of his attention on generally becoming stronger so he can fight the main bad guys.
Despite his adventure-craving childish exterior, he takes the position of captain quite seriously. He doesn’t have ranks or order within the crew, or treats them like their beneath him in anyway, but he does appear to bear the biggest burden out of everyone. And that’s mostly due to his strong desire to take EVERYONE with him and not have anyone die during his journey to become Pirate King.
Now, as for his more noticeable personality traits, well that’s far simpler. Essentially Luffy is a rather simple-minded teenager who has a thirst for fun and adventure. He’s all about having fun and will take on any adventure no matter how dangerous it is as long as it leads to new awesome experiences. He’s incredibly loyal to his friends also. So much so that he would have no problem risking life and limb for a person he just became friends with only a while ago.
He isn’t easily intimidated, even some times going as far as to say one of his opponents moves or attacks are “cool” or “awesome” even though that person may very well have the ability to kill him. This is most likely due to his high self-confidence in his own abilities and the motivation he gets to go on from his dream to one day obtain the legendary treasure known as One Piece and become King of the Pirates… Or a more likely explanation could be that he’s incredibly simple minded. He appears to have a fascination with anything that happens to be “cool” or “awesome” and like a child; he can be impressed by even the simplest of things (Such as a laser beam).
Luffy also has a strong love for his close friends. This is evident by the fact that he says he wants to become stronger just to protect them, and uses the technique he names “Gear Second” to pump the blood through his body faster to obtain inhuman speed and strength. Lucci warns that this is not a wise thing to do because his body’s stamina can’t keep up and he’s hacking away at his own life. Luffy simply states that this is a more favorable outcome than losing his friends. He even happily agrees for his friends to be revived from stone without hesitation despite the fact that it would mean he’ll be trapped on an island full of Amazon women trying to kill him.
He has been shown to be very rude, exhibiting bad table manners and quickly eating large quantities of food, even when eating amongst royalty. Although Luffy isn’t the brightest light bulb in the bunch, he cannot be classified as a complete idiot either. It’s a somewhat rare occurrence, but Luffy shows signs of intelligence as well (Even if that “intelligence” is just common sense). Like when he tells Vivi, it’s useless to try and just stop the war, and that it makes more sense for them to go take on Crocodile. And how he always has to fight the strongest guy. A task he usually does alone even if his friends are right beside him and are in good shape. There’s a number of reasons to why he does this but two of the most notable seems to be that he first views it as his responsibility as the captain and second is that he doesn’t want them to get hurt. Just about every main fight he gets into is a life or death struggle with a very powerful foe, and as such he prefers to do it alone if he is able.
Because of his obliviousness and simple minded thoughts, his intentions and motivation are shown to be mostly pure, with little to no selfish reasons behind them. He wants to become the Pirate King, not for the power, wealth, or fame one will possess, but simply because of the fact that he believes the Pirate King will have more freedom than anyone else. Another benefit of his simple thoughts is that he doesn’t quite understand how much danger he’s in. The only thing that he concentrates on is defeating the enemy which has proven to be quite useful except for his battle with Magellan where he tries to defeat a man practically made of poison with pure blunt force attacks.
Although he DOES depend on his crew to do most of the immediate thinking on smaller things (Such as stopping him from destroying the ships coating and thus dooming the crew to drown; small things like that) he is more than capable of thinking when he’s on his own. When he was stranded on Amazon Lily, he needed to see the head person of the island in order to get a boat. So after thinking about it to the point of almost catching a fever, he decided to go to the tallest building because that’s usually where the head honchos stay. And it turns out he was right. He landed in the exact place Hancock—the empress of Amazon Lily-- was taking a bath.
After the time skip Luffy has remained more or less the same that he was two years ago. He still enjoys being with his crew, having adventures, and generally being the goofy silly guy he is. His horrible memory has also remained the same throughout the years as well. It has always been sort of a running gag that unless a person was a close relative or friend to Luffy (or was a major villain such as Crocodile) he would quickly forget about them and not be able to remember who they were the next time he seen them, even if it had not been very long ago. This still remains true even ‘till today as he was unable to recognize Mohmoo or even Perona when he sees their faces signifying that there will probably be a lot more people in the future he will fail to recognize as well.
Luffy’s attitude towards animals has changed just a bit as well after his training. He never seemed to have a huge opinion on them, but occasionally he would befriend one or two if they were particularly good individuals. Such a Biri from Strong World and Vivi’s companion, Carue. Aside from that though, usually a lot of the animals he run into he treats them as second rate enemies. Easily tossing or throwing them aside if they attack him (on rare occasions he might even talk to them in a similar manner he did Duval’s bull or Laboon). After his training however, he has grown a sense of dominion over most wildlife. Thanks to his Haki he can make most animals concede to him with only a stare. This is how he was able to become the “boss” of Rurukaina and even stated he regretted not eating the only three animal friends he made on the island because he thought they would taste good.
