PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

[personal profile] arturian 2012-01-01 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Personality:

-->LAWFUL GOOD

Fate/Stay Night follows the Dungeons and Dragons alignment system for all the Servant characters to determine their nature. Saber is classified as Lawful Good, the purest form of the Good alignment. Lawful Good characters believe in order, being just and fighting for the greater good in the world. Saber majorly leans toward the good side more than not, as her past as a King did not always entail her doing what was lawful (such as killing innocents) but doing what she believed would be best for her kingdom. This is why she did not allow Mordred to become her successor: she knew he had good in his heart, but he did not have the country's best interests at heart. Yet even her ‘good’ has too much of a downside, as her idealistic way of ruling caused her to take on all the burdens of the country. She was not so much a ruler as she was a protector, as it is stated by another Servant in the prequel Fate/Zero. As a result she believes herself to be ineffective as a King, which is the reason she sought the Holy Grail: to erase her existence.

In the very first time Saber appears she immediately asks Shirou if he is her master and defends him, fighting off Servant Lancer with quick precision. In these moments we see two distinct traits in Saber's personality. The first being her loyalty. Shirou is the 7th master and doesn't have much talent for magic, if none at all at the beginning of the route, but regardless of this she fights for him and doesn’t look down on him for not being a trained Magi. He doesn’t even realize he summoned her accidentally at first, but she takes no offense and refuses to betray him even after learning it. Albeit there is a slight ulterior motive- Saber wants to win the war and won't reserve mercy for her opponents because of this desire. She already has an advantage, as a result of being in the previous war, so this time she knows what to expect from the battlefield. Like most knights of her era, Saber follows an extreme code of chivalry and is always willing to give aide to someone in need. She believes in stopping anything that goes against the greater good, which is part of the reason why she and Shirou get along so well, as he too wishes to thwart any force threatening humanity. That threat is the potential of the Holy Grail being brought to the hands of a sociopath. Unlike Shirou, she values her life and won't do anything reckless that could cause her to be killed unexpectedly.

Although she is graceful in defeat, she will never give up if she can keep going. Once more, unlike Shirou she does not believe that everyone can be saved. As a King she has led many battles that involved the deaths of both soldiers and innocents. It is not something she is proud of in particular, but she has accepted and is still willing to hurt and kill if necessary. However, she will not backstab someone or resort to dirty tactics in order to accomplish her goal.

-->FEARSOME LADY OF WAR

Then there is her second defining trait: her unwillingness to back down in battle. Halfway through her first fight with Lancer the other asks if they can stop fighting, as neither of them is completely prepared at the moment (Saber being just summoned and Lancer coming from a previous battle with Archer). Saber refuses and, even after Lancer gives her a near fatal wound in her chest, pursues him until she finds herself unable to gather up the strength to climb over a wall. She doesn’t believe in inaction when it comes to battling and it’s seen that she is capable of disobeying orders. But she only does it only because of her stubborn personality and belief in her strategy. If someone tells her that isn’t a chance of victory, she fully believes she can create one and refuses to change her mind on it. This leads her to even betraying Shirou’s order to not approach Ryudou Temple during the night, despite knowing there is a good chance of a trap waiting for her. Yet if she feels an ominous danger she won’t ignore it and will tread with caution.

Her courage and pure force in power has also led all Magi to yearn after the chance to summon her into battle. Of course they are likely not referring to her, Arturia Pendragon, but the Saber class. The Saber class is regarded as the most powerful and summoning a servant into this rank is considerably difficult. Saber classes are well-rounded in all attributes and are known for loyalty to their Master, as they are normally either kings or knights, and that makes it easier to get along with them. Arturia is always summoned as this rank, due to her affinity with swords and the knights, and it is known that the 4th war had a Saber class as the victor (which again, was her).

Not that her fearsomeness hasn't had its downsides - during the 4th war she caught the attention of the Archer class servant, Gilgamesh, the King of Ancient Mesopotamia, with her power and her idealistic views on ruling (which was discussed with him and the Rider class servant, Alexander the Great). Suffice to say he enjoyed seeing her suffer, as those idealistic dreams of ruling were just that. Gilgamesh, who can be considered the complete opposite of Saber and her beliefs, sought to marry and claim her as his own in every way. He appeared again in the 5th war, given a human form by the Holy Grail's spilled contents from the previous war, and sought to take her yet again. If Saber was an ordinary knight then it is unlikely that he would focus his attention on her and brush her off as a 'mongrel' like everyone else. It is because she is so fearsome, yet so innocent and pure hearted, that he wanted to claim her as his own. Unfortunately she has caught his eye and it is probably one of the worse things to happen to her, the very thought of marrying him making her reel back in disgust.

-->HONEST INNOCENT

Saber is known to be very honest, but is regarded as cold and precise with every decision. When she doesn't approve of something she will outright say so and wouldn't hesitate to do something that she absolutely has to. This holds true to a point though. Throughout the game Saber's goal was winning and obtaining the Holy Grail to make her wish come true. She did not believe herself to be a successful King, as Great Britain was left in ruins for some time after the civil war that was waged. Yet by the time the final battle approaches (in the route she is taken from at least) she realizes that she was wrong to want to change history. She held regret with her throughout and it was her driving motivation. It was through seeing Shirou fight and go through with his own without holding regrets, despite knowing what may come of it, that drove her to change her mind. While she is a king and easily one of the most famous in the entire world, Saber is still a young girl at her deepest core. She has fears and worries, but does not voice them because she does not believe a king should burden others. In her eyes, to be a king means to protect others and rule at a distance.

Her honest personality also shows how humble she is. She doesn't flaunt herself around or even acknowledge that she is one of the strongest heroic spirits. Unlike the demanding image she put on as a King, Saber has a hard time asking for things when she needs them, wondering to herself at one point if it would be courteous to ask for more food from Shirou. Outside of battle she can easily become timid and unsure of her actions, but rarely lets onto this. Her guard tends to drop only when she is around familiar people, like Shirou and Rin. Even with knowing about current day technology, due to her involvement in the 4th Holy Grail War, Saber is somewhat unaware of many things. She doesn't understand the concept of what a date is until Shirou asks her out for one and doesn't even flinch when he accidentally sees her naked for the first time. Not to say she's completely naive, but she has her moments of adorable shocks when complimented on something other than her ability as a swordsman. All in all she isn't use to kindness, as she never really had a regular life outside of becoming a King at such an early age.

-->A KINGLY MASK

Saber's coldness is merely a front she puts on though. From the moment she pulled out Caliburn from the stone she was regarded as an immortal by the people. She abandoned her emotions and humanity to be an effective knight and king, because she believed that one could not protect people with them. The people wanted a king, not a human that ran on emotions to make fair decisions. In doing this she reigned with fairness, solving many problems in the kingdom and creating prosperity. Under her rule Great Britain flourished. People easily caught on to her cold attitude, but she ignored it and isolated herself from everyone. When she pulled the sword she accepted this burden, knowing that she could not hold emotion on the battlefield against enemies. She would not be treated as an ordinary knight, but a king to be idolized. Although she is a knight, Saber is also a human. If she becomes close to others she will slowly open herself up to them and act in a kinder manner.

Her attitude can be interpreted as curt and strategic, thinking only of the best moves that can lead to her Shirou's victory. Yet she has a large hubris: her pride as a knight. Saber's honesty and loyalty coexist as a part of her knight's oath- she refuses to attack those who cannot fight, or unarmed and worries over Shirou's safety before her own. This goes to the point that she is willing to sleep in the same bed as him, if it means being able to better safeguard him. Her knight's pride almost leads her to give her true identity to Assassin on their first meeting, because he introduced himself to her by his real name first. She fights people on equal ground, while other servants look for battlefields that would work their advantage the most.

Despite being a woman, Saber does not focus much attention on her gender. Yet there are a few moments that she notes her insecurity as a member of the female sex. None of the other heroes ever seem to care that King Arthur is a woman, but she can become very defensive if someone implies she cannot be a good ruler only because she is a woman. While she does care much for femininity, she doesn't see herself as a member of her own sex because of her muscular physique and that she didn't focus on things a girl would have done in her time era, preferring to fight than to look for a husband. She also remarks several times that the sex of a Heroic Spirit, or a king for that matter, does not make a difference, as she is still capable of fighting and ruling. Shirou is especially surprised when she says that her figure is unsightly to men (after he accidentally sees her in the bath naked, a second time) and when she asks to have a stuffed lion doll, as a reminder of the small lion cub she took care of for a year.

Strengths:
Before getting to her physical/mental/emotional, I think it would be useful to explain Saber's Servant Status. In F/SN, Servants are Heroes of an ancient history summoned by a Master, a Magi, to do battle for the Holy Grail. As they are bound to a Master-Servant system, the Heroes have certain measurements of their skills that are based on the power of the Magi. The stronger the Magi, the stronger the Servant. As Saber is coming from Fate Route, her statistics will be based off from her Master being Emiya Shirou. Most of these are self-explanatory, with the exception of the Noble Phantasm which will be explained further in.

Strength: B
Endurance: C
Agility: C
Magical Energy: B
Luck: B
Noble Phantasm: C

Along with this, she has class and personal abilities.

Magic Resistance: A – According to the game, no Magi in existence should be able to hurt Saber using their power due to her rank. This includes the advanced magic Caster, a type of Servant who has the power to use magic (no other servant should be able to actually cast their own magical spells), uses to try and hurt her. While she’ll keep this rank, it’ll be powered down so that magic will have at least some small effect on her. This includes filial magic.

Riding: B – The power to ride creatures and master them with ease, but at her level she cannot ride beings considered mythical. She can ride dragons however, as her myth gave an affinity to them.

Instinct: A – A sixth sense that helps her determine the best course of action during battle. It also improves her sight and hearing. Only activates when she engages in combat.

Magical Energy Burst: A – Channels her magical energy (or rather the magic energy used to keep her powered and active) into her weapon, to increase the blows of her attacks (includes the Noble Phantasm attack). This skill is what allows her to keep up with her larger and more formidable opponents in terms of sheer brute strength (Berserker is used as an example). It might also destroy weapons that are not of divine nature by accident.

Charisma: B – The talent to command an army of troops effectively. Her troops/the ones she fights with benefit from the power, as their strength is increased by the skill. At B rank she can effectively lead an entire country, as she did before with Great Britain.

Noble Phantasms: Consider it the equivalent of a special move in a video game. Noble Phantasms are the trump cards of Servants and no Noble Phantasm is the same as another. But, they do come at an expensive price of magical energy and even more than that. A Noble Phantasm is a spell and its name must be yelled out to be activated. Noble Phantasm names hint or outright state the true identity of the Servant fighting and are used sparingly or with the intent of killing the target. Saber has three of these.

Invisible Air – Boundary Field of the Wind King: Invisible Air is a pseudo sheath for her sword, which surrounds the blade in an invisible gust of wind. The sword is not actually invisible, but the boundary field simply makes it look like that. As Saber’s weapon is well known, enough so that even glancing at it could give away her identity, she has the Invisible Air to protect it.

Rank: C
Type: Anti-Personnel Noble Phantasm
Range: 1-2 People
Maximum Target: 1 object (person, item, etc)

Excalibur – The Sword of Promised of Victory: When Saber releases the boundary field in a large gust of wind, her true weapon appears in its full glory. Excalibur, the famed holy sword she was given by the fairy princess of the lake after Caliburn’s destruction. Considered to be the holiest of all swords, Saber must shout out the name to release the energy she channels into it, which comes out in the form of a blast of light. It is Saber’s most powerful ability and is considered to be the most powerful Noble Phantasm, next to Gilgamesh’s Enuma Elish. Even with Shirou’s lacking ability as a Magi, she is able to create powerful blasts.

Rank: A++
Type: Anti-Castle Noble Phantasm
Range: 1-99
Maximum Target: 1000 people

Avalon – All is a Distant Utopia: Excalibur’s missing sheath, which was later found to be inside of Shirou’s chest. He returned it to her before the final battle at Ryudou Temple, so she actively owns it. It allows her faster regeneration when tapped into, but does not physically appear on the battle and she does not need to shout the name to activate it. According to the game, Avalon is what kept Saber immortal through her years as King Arthur, but it went missing one day. It can also be used as a shield to counter Noble Phantasms, like Enuma Elish and to heal other people who hold it, though Saber must be close to the holder in order for it to have any effect.

Rank: EX (expert)
Type: Barrier Noble Phantasm
Protection Target: 1 person

Saber | Fate/Stay Night | Reapp | 6/??

[personal profile] arturian 2012-01-01 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Physically: Out of the seven heroic spirits in the game, Saber is considered as the most powerful. She does not have the most brute strength, but she is the most skilled in swords and can have the highest statistics with a competent Magi. Her speed is unrivaled and the narrator compares it to the speed of a lightning strike several times throughout the course of the game. In the previous Holy Grail War she made it to the final battle and is regarded as the only Servant to do so, up to the start of the game.

Her power is only considered on par next to Berserker, who gained his strength in exchange for his sanity, and Gilgamesh (the Archer from the 4th war) who has the strongest Nobel Phantasm next to Excalibur. Along with Archer and Lancer, she also has a high level of resistance towards magic base attacks because her myth's inclusion of magical elements. Her status as a Servant also lets her regenerate wounds quickly, although the pain is still there despite the wound closing up.

Mentally: The girl might be short, but don’t judge a book by its cover- Saber has the steel mind of a King, strategizing both on and off the battlefield when it is needed. She has a natural charisma to how she presents herself as a lady of war and isn’t shy to state her opinions. While she isn’t particularly well versed in knowledge academically speaking (since most of her time was spent training) she is well versed in strategic planning and can create an organized battle plan fairly quickly. She understands her limits and when the time to fight is right and when it is not.

Emotionally: Saber can disguise her emotions fairly well when she must and did so for many years during her reign as 'King Arthur'. While she is normally very kind and understanding, she can also show blunt coldness and won't reserve mercy if the situation calls on it. Shutting herself in an icy facade is fairly easy for her.

Saber | Fate/Stay Night | Reapp | 7/8

[personal profile] arturian 2012-01-01 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Weaknesses:

Physical: As a Heroic Spirit, Saber’s body runs on magical energy given by the Master who summons her. As her master is Shirou, an inferior Magi, her power is not at its full potential. This fact becomes incredibly clear in a different arc, Unlimited Blade Works, when Rin becomes her master (during that time Saber’s stats were all A-level, excluding Agility and Endurance). On top of that, if she uses up too much magical energy without replenishing, her body can shut down and she will fade away (or in Luceti, die). It takes about two hours of sleeping to recover enough energy to stay active again, or excessive amounts of eating. There is a third way, but that requires intercourse with her Master. Along with this, because she is not actually dead yet some abilities of a Heroic Spirit are not available, such as changing into an invisible spirit.

Getting to her physique, while Saber is a formidable opponent she is only 5’1 and 92 pounds. This doesn’t stop her from fighting enemies like Berserker, who’s three times her height, but it doesn’t help when she needs to be taken seriously. Her Charisma ability makes up for most of this, but even then it’s not hard to feel self-conscious. She points out during the game how her body is not very feminine because of her upbringing and feels rather insecure about her personal appearance. Most of the time she ignores it, but other times she wishes she could be more womanly.

Mental: Food.

No, this isn’t meant to be a joke. When it comes to eating, Saber is very adamant about having well cooked food. An angry aura can be sensed when she even thinks about the food that she had to eat before eating Shirou's meals and will gladly pick a warm plate over sparring sessions if given the chance. At first her eating habits were explain as having to keep her energy up, as Shirou could not supply her with enough magical energy, but it soon became abundantly clear that Saber just really loves food and can eat up to endless amounts of it if she pleased. Deny her food and it does not end well.

But, getting serious: the knight is incredibly headstrong and it doesn’t always turn out to be for the best. Saber has a precise ‘never surrender’ mindset when it comes to her battles and always gives everything she has when fighting. Sparring with her on friendly terms can turn into a harsh battle if she does not watch herself and she will not reserve a cent of mercy to any enemy who comes to attack her, or who she attacks. When Saber learns the location of an enemy she believes it’s best to go after them immediately, without fear of any traps or possible circumstances that can occur beyond control. This leads her to go against Shirou’s orders to not approach Ryoudou Temple before they figure out more information on the dangers there. When thinking about the traps that may emerge, Saber brushes it off and decides that if victory is not possible then she will make it possible with all her strength.

There is also the big issue of looking at herself as a king first and woman second. As she ruled over Great Britain for many years as a man, she does not see herself as much of a woman as she does a knight and king. Due to the time period where she comes from, when woman were regarded as lesser then men in many aspects (especially in battle), Saber is prone to be offended when someone treats her like a defenseless girl who needs protection. This leads to a few conflicts with Shirou, who continuously worries about Saber getting injured in battle. She can understand to some point why he acts this way, but doesn’t believe herself to be inferior to any man or woman.

Emotional: When losing a battle she tends to feel a great amount of regret over it and constantly dwells on her failures. This goes back to her days as King Arthur, as she believes very deeply that it is her fault that Great Britain was nearly destroyed. She fully believes that if she cannot defend her Master that she is not worthy of being their sword, lamenting her defeat to Gilgamesh until Shirou fought back by replicating Avalon and using it to shield his attack.

Saber also has a very hard time holding back her anger, due to her honest personality. She is compared to a lion during these times, ferocious and demanding of what she wants. When she does get angry it’s easy to notice- one part of the game has her equipping her magic armor while sparring (something she only does for serious battles) when Shirou tells her that they will be skipping a lunch break to train extra. Either that or she will enter the room with a rather easy to read face of foulness.

First Person: Q&A

Third Person: "Lets see..."

It was just another day in Luceti for Saber. Scanning the isles of the grocery store for something to cook. Cooking was still a very new thing for the knight, always used to Shirou doing it for her. And, when she was in the village before, she had taken up getting food that was already pre-cooked. It was never as good as his food, but she could stand it well enough in her stomach. But, how long would she b here? When would she go back to the hill to finally rest in peace? She didn't know. So, until that day would come, she should at least learn to properly cook food herself. Perhaps if Shirou were to ever return, he could see how much she has improved. Even though the last time he didn't even...

She quietly reached out a picked out a packet of thin spaghetti noodles. No need to fret over things that haven't even happened yet. Right now she would need to focus on what is going on. And what was going on was the rumble in her stomach and a discontent frown automatically forming. What was next after the noodles? ...Naturally, the sauce. Sauce is what added flavor. She quickly makes her way down the isle and to the jars--

"Ah."

There were...so many. Which one does she pick? Tomato, Alfredo, Arrabbiata -- so many sauces from so many different parts of the world. She forced a dry gulp. She knew Luceti always had a hearty stock of food, but this was her first time truly witnessing how much they had. It was just sauce and yet the sight of it all seemed so very daunting to the knight, who had never truly learn to cook a full course meal in her life. If she were just a simple girl from her era, such a thing would be simply unheard of. Did Shirou really go through this all the time, just to cook everyone in his home a meal?

...She looks around her surroundings cautiously for a moment, making sure no one else is in the isle, before kneeling down and squinting at the numerous different tomato sauce jars. What should she pick? Which one would be right? Does it matter which one? Don't they all have the same tomatoes used to make it? Saber closed her eyes and let out a large breath of air. Just pick one. It won't change anything, so get it over with. Choose.

Her eyes then opened and she swiftly lifted a jar with one hand by the lid. Before she had a chance to look at the jar she stood up and quickly moved toward the exit of the store with her items. There was no turning back now.

1. What is your greatest ambition?

To uphold the code of a chivalrous knight, no matter what obstacles may attempt to thwart me from keeping my values. I am a king and a knight and nothing shall change that.

2. Is it better to have loved and lost, or to have never loved at all?

[...] The former.

To love can be arduous and it can lead even the best of men and women down the wrong path. But, only through understanding and taking those feelings to heart can one learn and grow. I have been in love twice, as a king and as a woman. I do not regret either of those loves, though they may be lost.

3. If you could be reborn as someone else, who would you be? Why?

Not too long ago, I would have wanted to reborn as a simple person. Someone who loved their land and did good for it, but did not have to carry it on their shoulders. Not as a king, but just as a regular commoner.

...But, I realize now that it was wrong of me to ever think in such a way. If fate did not want me to be a king, then I would not be born into royalty or given the opportunity to pull the sword from the stone. So now, I do not wish to be reborn. I only wish to rest.

4. Do you have any regrets? If so, what are they?

--That I could not do more. For both my country and for my Master. I'm sure I would be told that I have done enough, and yet one's work never truly feels accomplished.

5. If you had a choice between feeling emotions or feeling nothing, what would you choose?

I would feel emotions. To feel nothing is akin to being dead and empty inside. I pity those who cannot find room in their heart to feel and experience both sorrow and joy.

6. So... how exactly did you have Mordred, anyway? I mean, he's your son, right?

Ah...it's complicated. Let us say my sister and I are historically known for not being in good relations.

7. You know what, nevermind. Not my business. So... you doing anything later?

Not that I know of, at this current time. Why?

8. Hey. Just wondering but... What about... Mayoi.......

Mayoi.......

Ah, I believe I did see a girl with that name around the park once. But when I brought you up this is all, she suddenly became very violent and vicious. Like so.

I do not know what you did to inspire such ire, but she would not say anything on the subject.
