Name: Murphy Pendleton Fandom: Silent Hill: Downpour Gender: Make Age: Early to Mid-thirties Time Period: Truth and Justice Ending Wing Color: A light brown History: http://silenthill.wikia.com/wiki/Murphy_Pendleton Personality: Murphy is a man that rides the middle line of morality. He's a gray area person, possibly aligning as a 'chaotic good', freeing birds trapped in cages and scattering the ashes of the dead in their favorite place for them, while also not being above attempting to kill people who have wronged him and hijacking a car to get into jail to do so. He won't harm anyone that doesn't deserve it, has a big heart for kids and is innately a father, but he wants to survive and he won't hold back when it comes to his own life. With a criminal past contrasting a mild and happy family life, it's hard to judge Murphy as entirely good or bad. But, he is someone that clearly wants a quiet and happy life, now that his attempt at revenge has left him without gain.
Murphy is rather soft-spoken and mild-mannered, as his wiki entry mentions, not really getting worked up unless he has something to be angry about. He's rational and had a clean mental evaluation, something which most visitors to Silent Hill can't attest. He always goes for talk first with humans, despite the urgency of his situation, and on numerous occasions, the option presented for the player has him going out of his way to help those that have been uncooperative or even threatening. He tends to try and bring everyone he meets along with him to escape from the Hell he's clearly in.
But, he's not above frustration and often gives into it after several attempts at patience. In a high stress situation like the survival horror scenario that is Silent Hill, his conversations often dissolve into cursing and strong, stern tones from Murphy. He doesn't break out the yelling TOO often, as he does try to cling to as much patience and civility as possible when dealing with the bizarre and cryptic 'residents' of Silent Hill. He will give up on dealing with people eventually, if they're difficult for too long. Even if he has a kind heart, he also has a pretty strong sense of self-preservation and he won't keep trying to reason with someone if it's bound to get him killed or hold him up too long in Silent Hill.
Murphy is laden down with guilt. Not only does he blame himself for his child's death, but he blames himself for his divorce and letting down himself and everyone in his life. He believes he is a screw up, always failing. He feels like his life is completely out of control and the only control he has is over his own self-punishment. He beats himself down a lot and takes the blame for things he probably could have never stopped.
Strengths: Physical: Murphy is pretty well built. He's somewhat muscular and seems to have a good amount of power behind his limbs to match his size (As seen during several puzzles where he has to use heavy cranks and move heavy objects). He can fist fight (Beating down another inmate in his first encounter with a Screamer), use most basic firearms and utilize any number if items as weapons. Due to his past, it's safe to say he knows the mechanics of street fights and could hold his own against another man if he needed to. He can handle well against low-level supernatural beings that are similar to those found in Silent Hill. He also seems to have a pretty good deal of stamina and pain tolerance, given his perseverance through Silent Hill with numerous wounds and his bounce back ability after several accidents (The bus
Mental: Murphy's ability to problem solve is shown throughout the game and generally goes hand in hand with surviving Silent Hill. He has a pretty broad skill set and some specialized knowledge. He can hotwire a car, run a movie projector, splice films, has knowledge of a multitude of weapons, drive a boat and has a wide knowledge of cars. He's a bit of a jack of all trades, accomplishing the strange and varied tasks of Silent Hill successfully.
It can also be said that he has a great deal of mental fortitude. Where Silent Hill could easily drive a man crazy, Murphy remains sane straight through to the end in almost all of the endings. Even in his fear, he never gets completely overwhelmed by the place and keeps focused on his goal of leaving, first and foremost.
Emotional: Murphy's emotional strength lies in his ability to be sympathetic and kind to people in Silent Hill, despite their insanity or the threat they place against him. He's willing to risk himself, to some extent, for others. He doesn't want to leave others in that hell, even if it's risky for him, as a prisoner, to do such a thing. Even Anne, who persistently threatens him in the game, is offered numerous opportunities for working together as a team to leave Silent Hill together so they can move on from it.
Weaknesses:
Physical: Murphy is a normal human and does have his limitations. He is strong, but he isn't a weight lifter. He's not necessarily fast or graceful, though he does have decent balance. He's not in any way a well trained fighter, either, so he can't take down enemies as quickly as someone with training could.
Mental: Murphy might likely has a limited amount of education, having left the orphanage early and going straight into work, as he is mentioned as to being 'young' when he started to work in the theater. His criminal past probably interfered with this, as well. He's clever, but only so clever, and he seems to not pick up on a lot of the hints given to him by the residents and mechanics of Silent Hill until the end.
Emotional: Murphy has a huge guilt complex. He blames himself for most things that have gone wrong in his life, regardless of how much the outcomes relied on him.
He's also not fearless. Though it's a probable response to Silent Hill, he ends up panicking during numerous encounters with monsters or obstacles in game.
