Yunoha Suroor | Aquarion Evol

Personality:
Shyness is Yunoha’s defining trait. She spends the first quarter of the series being literally invisible and it takes almost losing a dire battle for her to finally show herself. Even then, she quickly recloaks herself again after the battle. It’s an almost crippling trait that imposes upon her ability to form relationships with others, making her into a very quiet, lonely character. However, as the major characters soon discovered, involving her in things draws her out from her shell quite quickly, and the girl inside isn’t quite as much of a shrinking violet as everyone had initially thought.

Whilst Yunoha doesn’t exactly make a transition from quiet to loud instantly, friendship does make her more open and a little braver to speak up. In fact, she’s strikingly honest in most of her interactions with others. She doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind, even in situations that may turn ugly— such as the occasion when she speaks out in defense of Jin when he accidentally intrudes upon the girls’ locker room. However, she doesn’t boast to be the defender of the weak, merely the voice of quiet reason. After all, rushing into things has never been her style; she prefers to observe and then draw her own conclusions. This extends even to her own self-assessments and she unabashedly talks about her own weaknesses, even to people whom she may just have met a few moments ago.

And yet beyond all that frankness, she’s actually an extremely emotionally fragile girl. She’s easily embarrassed and small gestures such as people not wanting to listen to her, shakes her already unsteady confidence and makes her withdraw. In fact, a lot of her courage comes not from self-confidence but from the friendships she’s built: Mikono’s trust in her, Jin’s clumsy attempts to connect to her— they enable her to open up and connect with more people. That’s not a bad thing, of course, for she is a kind, thoughtful and loyal friend. In fact, she’s practically a personal cheerleader for those closest to her. As she says herself:

"So now, in return, I'm going to support you."

Yunoha’s major strength both in battle and her relationships is the unwavering support that she gives to her comrades and her friends. Whilst she may be vulnerable and weak, she never lets that affect her belief and trust in her friends. In fact, it’s this reason that the breaking of her relationships affects her so much. The collapse of one of these, as seen by her reaction to Jin’s death, causes her to violently withdraw from the world around her. Unsurprising, considering how her relationships form the cornerstones of what makes her her (at this current point in time). Her life in Neo-Deava, after all, has been nothing but a string of regrets (and invisibility) up till she started to fight alongside the rest of the team.

However, as aforementioned, Yunoha is very aware of her own weaknesses and does strive to improve upon them. It’s a difficult thing to break the habit of hiding away from things she’s uncomfortable with, but she takes it a step further and tries very hard to face things head-on. It’s a sticky process, as seen by her slow recovery from Jin’s death (she starts off being self-blaming but slowly builds up to acceptance and renewal of her own self-confidence) but she persists and succeeds in the end. This also shows how Yunoha isn’t the type of person who can easily recover; her grief, for example, still commonly manifests itself in her conversations with others when she peppers it with mentions of him, even though the conversation topic may not quite call for it.

Strengths:
[ Physical ] Yunoha's Element power is optical fluoroscopy (aka invisibility), and she's a deft hand at using it. Canon has shown that she can cloak five fighter jets for a little more than half a day and doesn't need to be in close vicinity to maintain her shields. On a personal level, she has the ability to control her own opacity, and can appear transparent, various different levels of translucent and of course, totally opaque. She's also a trained Vector pilot and can be relied on to pilot a similar spacecraft, as long as it doesn't involve engaging with the opponent in direct battle.

[ Mental ] Yunoha is quite open-minded and doesn't tend to jump to conclusions quickly even in seemingly no-brainer situations (like when Jin accidentally ventured into a locker room full of girls, herself included). She prefers to observe and think things through- an easy enough task since she's easily one of the more perceptive characters in the series, given how much time she spends listening to others rather than talking. This helps her avoid misunderstandings, though ironically enough, it is this attitude that forced her hand and made her appear before the other Element pilots as well— she'd wanted to clear up a misunderstanding between Amata, Mikono and Zessica.

She's also very firm in her own opinions and doesn't back down easily unless she's sure that her position's understood 100%. When it comes to issues she's passionate about (i.e. the whole being lonely vs being alone issue that she had with Jin), she's willing to put aside her shyness to argue, albeit hesitantly. When she puts her mind to something, no one can stop her.

[ Emotional ] She's extremely supportive of others and doesn't let that falter no matter how hard the situation gets. It's friends over herself for Yunoha who takes the time and effort to make food for Andy when he was angsting away in one of his holes, even though the loss of MIX hit her hard as well. For her friends, she's willing to make a couple of sacrifices.

She's also the quickest to sympathise with others and is quite gentle-hearted . She's the first to try to understand Jin's problems settling in at the academy, and is the only one who seeked out Mikono to comfort her and get her side of the story when the latter was punished for siding with an interplanetary enemy.

Weaknesses:
[ Physical ] Yunoha is one of the physically weakest Element pilots in the Neo-Deava lineup. She passes out easily, particular during times of heavy stress (watching Jin almost get hit by a stun ray, watching MIX and Andy almost get buried alive), making her a liability when not in the pilot seat. Additionally, although her invisibility does grant her temporary cover (via thermal/mass/visual scans), she's also the type to go down in one hit. Ideally, her best tactic is to keep away from the danger zone unless truly necessary.

[ Mental ] Yunoha has very little self-confidence. The time that spent at Neo-Deava was squandered away being fearful about a lot of things— of being lonely, not being able to match up to everyone else and so forth. All this exerted a great deal of stress upon her on top of her already crippling shyness, making her even more reclusive and quiet compared to others. She demands quite a lot of attention from others and will withdraw from sight if not given full attention.

[ Emotional ] Yunoha is one of the most emotionally fragile characters in the series and is heavily affected by the collapse of her relationships (whether platonic or not). In fact, she goes as far as to sink into a deep depression upon Jin's death that she almost wiped herself off the face of the planet. It was one of her lowest points— she became self-hating, selfish and bordering on suicidal. She has improved since then, but it takes her a very long time to recover from her grief; even at the end of the series, she still mentions Jin's name when she fights, indicating that his death is still something that she can't quite let go just yet.

Yunoha is also exceedingly dependant on her friends and will go to great lengths to keep herself relevant to the group. When Andy invites Mikono (and accidentally Zessica) for a planning party at the male dorms, Yunoha takes it upon herself to wait for the two girls in the secret tunnel, even if she hadn't been invited. It's her greatest fear to be left alone again, and for that, she claws her way to being involved in things. When everything else fails though, she clings to Tama, her little frog-shaped cat doll. It's frightening to imagine how things would turn out if she didn't have him.
