History: Long, long ago...Yes. We were still young. We made a promise...didn't we? Personality: Anju is, for the most part, a meek and hardworking woman. She lives and works entirely in her hometown, Clock Town, and does so tirelessly. She is a caring individual; she listens to her mother, she takes care of and cooks for her difficult grandmother, and she is helpful with all of her customers. Unfortunately, life has a tendency to work against her. Her cooking is awful, so her grandmother pretends to be senile to avoid eating her cooking. Her mother is incredibly overbearing. When the Festival of Time comes around, Anju is also so overworked that she has trouble managing the reservations. She is relieved when people do have reservations, and she gets extremely flustered when she has to turn people away for not having one.
While she’s content in her work and where she is in life, she struggles with her confidence and her happiness. When her fiance, Kafei, goes missing, she can’t even bear to see him in person; she’s too afraid of the answer she’ll find. At certain times, if Link speaks to her in the right form, she’ll also admit that she’s been moping too often, that she needs to smile more and try to be happy. However, when things hit Anju, they have a tendency to hit her hard. She’s extremely impressionable to the point where her emotions can make her stay or evacuate Clock Town without seeing her fiance again. She also overreacts often and is easily flustered/startled; whether it’s wearing Kafei’s mask, receiving a letter from him, or just having someone walk up to her at the wrong time of day, she may stammer and be unable to complete her thoughts.
Her main driving force in the game, though, is her fiance, Kafei. Events prior to the game’s staring have him missing, leaving Anju to wonder about his love, whether or not their marriage is going to happen. This will no doubt carry into Luceti; she’s left waiting for him, sure he’s going to come back after receiving her pendant of memories from Link. Him not being around is a constant source of stress and worry for her, and it’s made worse by her mother saying that he’s no good and trying to get Anju to evacuate Clock Town with her. Her devotion to him not only shows that she is an indecisive woman who worries a lot; but he is the only one for her. In the end, Kafei is the person she’s loved since they were children.
There’s one thing about Anju, though, that separates her from other people. While the moon is falling closer and closer to the town, more and more people panic. Some don’t, some cower and become afraid...but when she has the means to, Anju is completely fearless. In her final moments in the game (though time is reset thanks to Link), she waits alone in her room and waits for the moon to fall so that she can spend her last hours with Kafei, all because he gave her his word that he would show up. While everyone has evacuated the town and the moon is surely going to destroy the town, Anju is one of the few who remain, willing to put aside her fear of death to see her love again.
All in all, Anju is a normal woman, if somewhat meek, who constantly gets the short end of the stick. Her father died when she was young, her cooking is so awful her grandmother pretends to not know who she is, and her mother tries to make important decisions for her. She’s a sane person living in a town with people like the Postman and Link-Goro constantly confusing her. She works hard, never hardly works, and is concerned for the well-being of everyone, always willing to give a hand. And in the end? For her, her love with Kafei can convince her to do almost anything.
Strengths: Physical: Anju is a hard worker! She doesn’t tire out easily, as she manages an entire inn with her mother. It may only have two rooms, but it’s still a lot of work doing chores for so many people. She’s young, healthy, and in shape. She may not have any special abilities aside from those, but she’s perfectly capable of giving her all.
Mental/Emotional: Anju is relatively level-headed when compared to the rest of the people in Clock Town. Despite how flustered she gets and how she loses confidence easily, she is able to look past these things and focus on work instead of giving up on everything. She’s able to force a smile and keep working, even if the pain is obvious to everyone around. Her relationship with Kafei is also a strong point for her; he’s living proof that she’s able to overcome things, become fearless. She’s always willing to do her best to help out; this is seen clearly in how much work she does around the inn despite her less than stellar state of mind. Not much is revealed about her education, but it can be assumed she can read, write, and do math given that she reads and writes letters and works in an inn.
Weaknesses:
Physical: Just like she has no real physical strengths, Anju has no major physical weaknesses. She’s not the strongest woman around, and she has no special skills aside from doing chores and working hard.
Emotional/Mental: As aforementioned, Anju is a person who is easily surprised and flustered and depressed. She has the potential to move past these feelings and work hard, but those feelings are there. She has difficulty trying to get her point across, she sometimes is so down that she’ll reveal it to strangers, and she also has a tendency to be easily pushed around. Her happiness, at times, is entirely dependant on Kafei (though that’s hardly her fault; the true love of her life vanished). She has a terrible memory for faces on the mental side of things, and she can be a bit clueless about things that are going on around her (such as her grandmother only pretending to be senile).
