Applications

PLEASE USE THE NEW APPLICATION POST!

Please be aware that apps are only open from the 1st (12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time) to the 7th (11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time) of any given month. This means that as of 12:01 AM, the 1st, apps are open and that as of 11:59 PM the 7th, they are closed. If you post an application after that time, it will be deleted and ignored. Please pay attention to the application times and the status at the top of this page!

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE APPLYING! Especially the last few, as they establish what characters can or cannot be accepted.

If you want to canon-update your character, you must re-apply for said character with the relevant changes (history, personality, strengths and weaknesses, etc). For re-apps and canon updates, samples must be rewritten; we do not accept recycled samples.

The old application posts can be found on Livejournal, using the Applications tag.

Here's the application. Copy and paste the text box info into a comment and fill it out. You must apply with the following format, otherwise your application will not be accepted.

FANDOM CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our fandom applications.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS

Confused? HERE is a quick explanation of how to fill out our OC applications.

You may link to threads on the [community profile] trainingwings community for your first person samples, as long as the thread in question is no older than three months. The thread or post must still have at least ten lines of dialog from your character to be considered.

HERE is a word-counting tool to check your 3rd person samples.

If a mod does not accept your app right away, please be patient. We all have our own personal and busy lives to attend to, and there might be a period of time when it might take us days to get to the applications. There is also the possibility that we do not know the canon you are applying for, and we need time to study it. So please be patient and we will work as fast as we can to get you an answer. If it has been a week with no word, please feel free to message Akai (guynophobic), Masamune (masamune3x), or Emily (spark memories) on AIM, or email them at their respective email addresses found in the [community profile] luceti profile page.

Note: Applications are not always processed in the order they are received, due to the way they are divvied up between the moderators. If your application has been skipped, do not fret. Another mod will be getting to it soon enough. Additionally, you now have ONE WEEK to complete revision requests and Q&A's. You will be reminded of this deadline three days before it's up. After that week has passed, your application will no longer be considered for the current round. We apologize, but please be patient with us!

A note for applying here on Dreamwidth: Due to the character count limit being higher on DW, it might be tempting to toss the whole thing in one comment and leave it. However, we ask that you split the application up into at least two comments- the first containing your player information and (if you want) basic character info, the rest in another comment (or more, if you wish). This is to avoid having entire applications spanning the page and making it huge.

Splitting them up will make it easier for mods to process the applications. Thank you!

Personality:

For his entire life, Kurt Wagner has had to live with the effects of looking like a blue, fuzzy demon. His adoptive parents still raised him with care, so he grew up to be somewhat well-adjusted and eager to gain everyone's approval. But because of his appearance, he was still shunned and taunted by most others, to the point that he only felt comfortable disguising himself completely in a cloak upon arriving in America. It has been his time in the Xavier Institute which has helped him to grow comfortable with his appearance because of the acceptance he's felt by all of his peers, with only some roadblocks along the way. It has also helped that he has been dating a girl who is very accepting of his true appearance and was in fact intrigued by it. With Amanda, Kurt could let go of his insecurities about his appearance, being left with the basic teenage insecurities and fear of messing up - insecurities that were more refreshingly normal.

At his core, Nightcrawler is someone who loves to have fun. He enjoys parties, dancing and a variety of casual activities. He loves to make jokes and maintain a light atmosphere. As Kurt was raised in Germany, much of his humor from American culture primarily came through second hand sources, which has often led him to misrepresent them in ways that come across as dorky instead of genuinely funny. His baggy fashion sense may be similarly misguided. However, he seems to have adjusted better to being an American teen better over the course of his years at the X-Institute. Regardless of what effect his jokes have, he still values himself for his sense of humor and thinks of himself as much cooler than he actually is. He gets excitable about all times of things he considers cool, such as going on an official mission, and he will often make related quips from his distorted view of pop culture regarding the subject. He also likes to poke fun at his more uptight comrades, such as Scott, but primarily to help them to be more comfortable with themselves. He himself likes to make jokes, even prideful ones, about his "fuzz" when he feels comfortable enough with himself and the people he is around.

Nightcrawler's struggles with his identity have also extended to his parentage. Although he was grateful for the way his foster parents raised him, it was when he found out about some memories related to his infancy which Rogue absorbed that he became more desperate to find answers about his true parents, especially when it turned out his mother was Mystique. Part of him has longed to connect with her in some way and find some trace of familial love there. However, in the process he unknowingly developed such a bond with Rogue, who turned out to be his sister through adoption. The two share the bond of being children of Mystique in different ways - and of being hurt deeply by her in different ways. This manifested in the aftermath of Mystique's turning into stone. Kurt was desperate to save her from the irresponsible and disrespectful clutches of the Brotherhood, and to find a way to restore her, but Rogue just wanted her gone. He thought the right thing to do was to help her instead of abandoning her like she had done to both of them, and he seemed to get Rogue to that understanding as well, but she chose to push the stone figure off a cliff instead. He has been coming to grips with this loss, and it took him some time to forgive Rogue on any level to the point of resuming their bond. Despite all his trip-ups with Mystique, he still realizes that the Xavier Institute is the home of the people who truly accepted him for who he is, so they are his true family.

Strengths:

Physical: Nightcrawler's primary mutant ability is teleportation. He can move between any two locations, leaving behind a small cloud of smoke and a distinctive sound as he does so. He has stated that his limit is two miles, and he need to have some awareness of his destination. He can also usually carry people and/or objects with him as he teleports.

He is also very nimble and athletic. His prehensile tail and his feet and be used to grab things like hands. In one instance, Kurt even tried using his feet to steer the X-Jet. His hands and feet can also stick to walls and ceilings, filling the "crawler" part of his name. As for the "night", he has exceptional night vision. On top of all this, his skills have been constantly honed through Danger Room simulations and other intense training sessions which Xavier's students are exposed to.

Mental: Kurt has a modest high school education. Although he is mostly familiar with modern-level technology on a basic level, he also knows how to pilot the X-Jet, and he was confident enough to do so with his feet. His light-hearted nature does help to cool down tensions as well, and when he isn't being to irresponsible, he can obey orders and be a valuable member of the team. He also has some intellect relating to his powers, such as estimating distance and other factors which must be kept in mind for safe teleportation travel.

Emotional: Kurt has a good heart and is a believer in general. He believes in others and the potential good in them - even in Mystique, who abandoned him. He will also persist in enduring against the walls put up by others, such as Rogue, in order to truly befriend them and be there for them. And once he's developed such a strong bond with someone, that bond is hard to break due to the strength of his belief. He does not have it in him to kill, and he does not like to give up on others. In one instance, he disobeyed direct orders from Wolverine in order to spare the life of Magneto, and Magneto in turn spared his own. He also was not willing to give up on Mystique after she was turned into stone. And despite Rogue's apparent killing of Mystique, which caused him to start giving her the cold shoulder, he ultimately was incapable of giving up on her, either. Not long after he dismissed her, he came to her aid at the bayou with the other X-Men and greeted her more warmly.

He has special attachment and loyalty for those who accept him for who he is. Even though he can feel bitter sometimes, Kurt himself can be forging even towards those who judge him for his appearance, because he really just wants to show them how good he is inside. He fit in so well with the Xavier Institute because of their acceptance. And even though his loyalty to Mystique was unearned by her neglectful actions, he was ultimately there for those who had actually been there for him and were closer to real family for him.

Weaknesses:

Physical: He is not so good at actual hand-to-hand combat. Kurt's physical strength is also only somewhat around that of an average human, and he focuses on his agility instead. His tail can be a hindrance sometimes when it is grabbed by others, and it can throw him off balance. His immaturity has also caused many of his fights, particularly those against Toad, to devolve into boyish wrestling matches.

There are also limits on his powers; he can only teleport within a two mile radius and the further the distance, the greater the strain on him. Moving vehicles can also interfere with hits teleportations.

Mental: Kurt does not always think things through and in some cases can be gullible. In one instance, he went out to an abandoned construction site after receiving a note to get details of his past, putting no thought into the possibility of a trap. He has also been misled by Boom Boom, due to developing some level of a crush for, but he was able to be responsible in helping her against her father. Kurt does not have the best work ethic, and he tends to shirk on studying, chores or training sometimes in favor of having fun. Also, he is not very tech savvy and often leaves such things for others, like Forge. In one instance, he did not understand any of Forge's scientific terms and tried to blame it on his bad English. He is also not always tactful and will sometimes risk exposing himself out of excitement. He has sometimes revealed his true form and/or teleported while in school without checking for observers, and this is what lead to Amanda discovering his secret. Additionally, his penchant for goofing around can sometimes interfere with missions and lead to trouble for others. It almost caused him to be trapped in another dimension once when Scott could not figure out if Kurt's warning was serious because of that habit of joking around.

Emotional: A lifetime of burns has left him reluctant and shy towards making new bonds. He is always insecure about how people will react to his true appearance, which has made him fairly dependent on the effects of his image inducer to an extent, and in some points he has even abused the inducer to try to make himself look more attractive. Even when Amanda was accepting of him, he remained paranoid about what her parents would think. This fear seems to have been justified in the end, as it is implied that Amanda's parents tried to keep them from seeing each other after witnessing his true form, although Kurt's deception probably did not help his case. His insecurities have also caused him to have low confidence. He has so much trouble believing that Amanda could find him attractive, and his meekness sometimes causes him to misunderstand playful jokes as genuine criticism. For one date, when Amanda noted he had arrived early, Kurt's response was to turn around apologetically and offer to leave.

There is also the flipside of his strong belief system, particularly when applied to Mystique. She is the one who has earned Kurt's belief through seemingly minimal effort: giving birth to him, showing concern for him as a baby and also seeming concerned when she arranged the meeting with him years later. But Kurt's belief in his mother, in finding answers to who he is and acceptance even beyond what happened to his parents, is something that has become almost unconditional and desperate. This was most clearly shown in the aftermath of Mystique being turned into stone. Kurt was the only one who had any concern for her, and even though Rogue tried her best to convince him that he did not owe Mystique anything, he insisted on not giving up on her.

Kurt woke with a groggy yawn, muttering some automatic musing about whether he was late for breakfast or school. The weird thing is? He didn't remember his bed feeling so... tree branch-y. He yelped as he almost fell from the branch, but his tail was able to wrap around the branch. This gave him a moment to reflect on how he felt like more of a monkey than some kind of blue devil. But when the next moment came, he realized that he did not recognize any of the surrounding landscape.

There was a lake. Could that be connected to the bayou? But then why was he alone? It didn't add up. They beat the bad guys and escaped. They should have been well on their way back home, in the relative comfort of the X-Jet and the mansion. He had to talk to Rogue. A blast of smoke soon took his place by the tree, spreading the acrid smell of brimstone, as Kurt reappeared down on solid ground. This really didn't look like New Orleans. And something felt... odd when he teleported. He couldn't put his finger on it. But he soon realized why he seemed to feel a chill: there he was, minimally dressed. He frantically searched his person, but there was not even an image inducer to be found. If he was in a place that seemed to be populated, it could reach worst nightmare status. As it was, this was still cause for alarm. And why did his back ache?

This was not good. He quickly bamfed himself up into a nearby tree, before anyone could see him. There were two possibilities, neither desirable. He was either kidnapped, stripped down and left in the middle of nowhere, an idea which made him deeply worried for the others. The second idea? This could be Logan's surprise survival training, which... actually sounded a lot like the first one, just with a specific purpose. He could still teleport, at least. So there he goes, teleporting from treetop to treetop, keeping his eyes out for anyone he knows, or being wary of any potential enemies. With one look at the sea of trees, he knew it was going to be a long morning. And he hasn't even noticed the wings yet!
