Personality: Rin is a simple boy with alarmingly complicated circumstances surrounding his birth and life. At his core, Rin is a kindhearted soul who willfully helps out those around him without thought for the consequences of his action on himself or others – a boy who wants to live up to the expectations he has created for himself based on his pride for his family members. He does not believe that he is cool yet, but his father most certainly is, and his brother is exceptional. However, this simple core is surrounded by a large number of layers. The most obvious of them is that he happens to be the son of Satan, but he also has other issues to contend with – some related to that fact and some not.
Rin is under-educated (due to ditching school constantly since like middle school), difficult to motivate towards anything productive, ignorant, dense, and has a poor vocabulary on top of all that - he's a real thug in that respect - but it also isn't totally fair to call him stupid. Many characters in the series have rejected the notion that he is. But he also isn't the brightest - he's very dense, prone to missing the point in situations and filled with a general lack of social grace bore partially out of his isolation (due both to his own temper and later to distancing himself from other people because of it) and partially just because of his nature. Kind or not, Rin is also quick to resort to violence, quick to argue, and puts himself into bad situations because of it.
Furthermore, because of all of these problems that he has, Rin has developed a very distinct sense of self-depreciation. While he can bluster and be filled with visible bravado (particularly towards his brother) he self-admonishes himself for being "stupid," acknowledges that studying doesn't suit him, and at his worst - which happened in the chapter he was taken from - rationally concludes that his own existence is such a liability to the people around him that it might be better off if he died. While he puts on a show of being tough or smiling through things, Rin's self-esteem is a cesspool of dour conclusions only kept in check by the fact that he has a great willpower and drive towards his goals. Namely, that he wants to be better than he is. He wants to be strong enough to not put other people down and to be a cool guy.
"Willpower" is very important for Rin. With so little else going for him, much of his bluster comes out of a very solid belief system he has in which if he dedicates himself to a goal, even if he isn't very good at motivating himself to practically apply himself, he will still be able to reach it. He's only recently come to see the error in that logic and try to correct himself, but this mindset explains much of his listlessness and the difficult relationship he has with his twin brother.
So in essence, Rin Okumura is a kindhearted punk who has a very foul temper and is generally a delinquent, but wants to do right by his father, his brother, and his friends (when he makes them). However, he is also a troubled youth who does not want to saddle his friends with the "burdens" associated with being his friend, such as dealing with the fact that he is an extremely powerful half-demon, the son of Satan himself. He's forthright and honest for the most part, but also prone to taking all the suffering of a situation onto him personally. He's a good kid, if a lot rough around the edges.
New to this canon update: Rin has now more or less mastered his flames' ability of choosing what to burn and come to a serious resolve about how to handle his status as Satan's son - namely, he embraces it. He's gotten past the mental block he was still suffering from when he was last in Luceti (though this was fixed in Luceti too) and had his friends and everyone in his life expect possibly his brother accept him. He's still very kind and a little immature (after all, while this canon update is important probably 2 weeks or less have past canon-time) and still has a temper, but he's more resolute than ever about what being an "exorcist" means to me, and about where he stands with his classmates.

Aside from this, he has the power of Satan's blue flames: the fire can spew out of him in any direction or remotely light things on fire. In ideal or emotional conditions he can also pick what it does and doesn't burn (both directly [what is burning] and in terms of heat/pain – Shiemi has remarked a few times when Rin has used the flames to save her that they don't feel hot) but regardless of that, the flames are a very powerful weapon, able to turn most lesser demons (or solid objects, from clothes to cement to wood) into ash almost immediately, particularly when he's in the full demon form.
Incidentally, while unclear exactly how much it affects things, while he is in the demon form (which is sealed by the sword that he carries – when the sword is pulled out he is released) his physical might and flames both seem to be noticeably stronger. In the fights he has with Amaimon, for example, his demon-form power basically overwhelms his opponent despite Amaimon being a very powerful demon (the "King of the Earth") in his own right, whereas he was not able to keep up with him at all before releasing his power. He's also able to do completely ridiculous things like make fifty feet standing jumps while in this form.
Mentally and Emotionally Rin is an extremely loyal, extremely dedicated fellow – to friends and to family. He's not the most diligent person ever when it comes to training or study, but he does have a great sense of being goal-oriented. Rin is not great at actually trying (ADD and his temper both get in the way of that) but more often than not, such as with the candles given to him by Shura or the hair pin given to him by Suguro, he does actively want to be able to focus. More than that, however, he has a strong sense of kinship and need for protection among his friends and even more so his family.
Beyond this, Rin is quite good at cooking (his one real practical skill), but has few other strengths.
Weaknesses: Physically, though the only one which has been specifically confirmed is holy water and the demon-repelling gate at Shiemi's house, it's very likely than all of the traditional weaknesses of demons in the canon apply to Rin. That is to say there is a probably some holy verse which weakens if not kills him; holy water, talismans, and other such things also probably will weaken him or give him ill effects.
Also while it has not been fully clarified how, Mephisto has remarked that a demon's tail being out is an unsightly thing. He puts this in terms of the fact that a "gentleman" would never show it, but it's somewhat unclear if this is because the tail is an actual weak point in a mystical sense, or simply because his tail (which is fluffy and does not appear to be prehensile) is simply a liability in a combat situation. Either way, it does seem to be a certified weak point- Amaimon is able to use it to his advantage during his fight with Rin.
However, the much more damning weaknesses that Rin has are mental and emotional. To begin with, there is the simple fact that Rin is... really dumb. He tries hard, and he can be pretty intuitive, but he's very poorly educated and even when he makes effort about it he is a terrible student. A lot of the choices he makes in life are misinformed by his ignorance, and he can just do some really dumb things overall. And, perhaps even more problematic, Rin has a very nasty temper. He gets angry relatively easily, and when he gets angry he's prone to jumping towards violence quickly. Couple this with his tremendous physical strength, and you can see why this is not acceptable. Beginning when he was in Kindergarten, Rin has often gotten in fights with his peers, resulting in him being further and further alienated by them and producing a very lonely boy overall. His hair-trigger temper can mean he gets in arguments he shouldn't, and often makes him seem like a much worse guy than he is.
Coupled between both of these factors is the fact that (at least in cases of severe duress) he cannot control the full extent of his demonic powers 100%. Commanded by his emotions, his flames can tend to shoot out wildly, sometimes producing very destructive waves of fire where it might not be necessary. In the worst case situation, he might lose himself entirely, becoming consumed by his demonic blood and his rage, turning into a deadly albeit unfocused berserker, as in his fights with Amaimon. Rin (and those around him) live in fear of the fact he might not be able to overcome this, hence the need for his training in controlling himself, his emotions, and his flames.
NOTE: Since his canon update though, while these are still concerns, he has displayed significantly more control over his flames and even reigned himself in from getting lost in his demonic blood. So it's a fear, but no longer an overwhelming one such as it once was.
Bonus: Powers misc: Rin is the son of Satan and thus has inherited super-powerful blue flames which he can produce all over his body as an aura, extend outwards as either a projectile (a torrent of flame) or to light nearby things on fire. This latent ability is always present due to his sheer potential, but his ability to produce the flames skyrockets when he draws his magic sword, the Kurikara (also known as the Koma Sword), which seals his demonic power in Gehenna.

O..Ossu! Hey, everyone, it's Rin! Rin Okumura, I mean, if you don't know me. And I'm back, it's getting colder, uh... while it's still warm, anyone wanna come over and have a pool party? Spent way too long clearing that thing out just to not use it 'cus it's almost winter again.
[A beat...]
...Almost winter, huh. Man, that's weird. It was summer, then I showed up here in fall, then back to summer, then back here in winter. [...He doesn't want to be here. He sighs] A-anyway, if you know me and Shiemi! ....Or I guess Yukio, if that four eyes has any friends [HAH take that bro] c'mon over and we'll make a summers end party or somethin'!
Third Person:
He was home. He was finally gone of this place, like he'd wanted for the whole time he was here. It's why he didn't make the connection with Shiemi he's been considering after talks with Sanji. It's why he had gotten into that argument with Cloche. That argument... Cloche's words from it echo together with the words of his brother. Sitting on the roof of his house following making that upbeat pool announcement, Rin can't help but take note of the moon and his own words. The words of other people.
"... And what about you then? What if Shiemi and I left and you were still stuck here."
"I don't want anyone else to go away, but... my friends seem to keep disappearing, I... I don't want you to go away too, Rin...!"
"Don't feed me 'you'll handle it' or something like that. What if it happened. Tomorrow."
"It's always the same. I have to be cursed. I'm not allowed to be close to anyone."
It's all an accusation at him. But all the same, being home is better. He wanted to be back, Yukio definitely wanted to be back, so did Silver and he's sure Shiemi did too. Sure the consequences of leaving matter, but-! But they don't belong here is what he would have articulated had he been able to find the words. But Rin wasn't as he looked up at the moon. He couldn't articulate those words because he couldn't think of anything which justified how distraught Cloche was then.
"We shouldn't have to leave separately, we should all be sent home at the same time! That way... that way no one has to be sad!"
Yes, he missed Koneko, Suguro, Eyebrows, and even Shima and Shura more than he could articulate right now. The pangs for missing them are fresh. And if he was supplied memory - or if they left before him - he would miss Silver or Precis, or Caius, or other people he'd encountered here. And it pissed him off that what he knew was right made him feel like a total heel right now.
...Thinking about it wasn't going to help though. Thinking didn't suit him. He scoffed at himself, missing Kuro for moments like this, and instead leapt off the roof to go pick a fight with Skarmy.
